My special guest tonight is a former TV investigative reporter and current part-time private investigator Glen Meeks to discuss his book called 'Wrong Numbers'. "Wrong Numbers is an intriguing and well-researched crime story detailing the intersection of big money and quick sex in the city that contains a lot of both." - Jack Sheehan, author of Skin City Was a hacker diverting phone calls meant for Las Vegas escort services? The FBI wanted to know, and so did associates of a New York Mafia family. In one of the most unusual undercover operations ever, the FBI had an agent acting as a manager in a real Las Vegas escort service. Federal agents expected to find prostitution and drugs in the Las Vegas escort industry. What their investigation uncovered was even more serious. "Wiseguys and wannabes are on the hunt for a shadowy hacker who may hold the keys to control of Las Vegas' multi-million dollar call girl racket, while FBI agents are hunting them. The result is a gripping true-life crime story that reads like a collaboration between Elmore Leonard and Williams Gibson told with the knowing savvy of two longtime chroniclers of Sin City's hidden underbelly." - Kevin Poulsen, author of KINGPIN: How One Hacker Took Over the Billion-Dollar Cybercrime Underground"In '90s Vegas, call girls worked for “entertainment” services that were little more than phone numbers, dispatchers, and drop safes. When a mystery hacker started diverting customer's calls to one service's number, it launched a series of dangerous events that involved the Mob, feds, hackers, service owners, and the phone system itself. This slice of Sin City history is as little-known as it is thrilling, and it's well-told by investigative journalist Glen Meek and crime writer Dennis Griffin." - Deke Castleman, author of Whale Hunt in the Desert: Secrets of a Vegas SuperhostFollow Our Other ShowsFollow UFO WitnessesFollow Crime Watch WeeklyFollow Paranormal FearsFollow Seven: Disturbing Chronicle StoriesJoin our Patreon for ad-free listening and more bonus content.Follow us on Instagram @mysteriousradioFollow us on TikTok mysteriousradioTikTok Follow us on Twitter @mysteriousradio Follow us on Pinterest pinterest.com/mysteriousradio Like us on Facebook Facebook.com/mysteriousradio]

Rod knocked on the door, and within a few moments, the door swung open and there was O.J. Simpson. This was and is a moment that is hard to reconcile in my mind. As I stood there—a detective tasked with investigating a crime and thinking I was going to conduct this interview just like any other—I was a little star struck . . . In 1995, NFL great and movie star O.J. Simpson beat a murder rap for the death of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. But in 2007 his luck with avoiding Lady Justice ran out in Las Vegas. Written by the lead detective assigned to the case, Room 1203 is the true story of the convoluted and bizarre events surrounding a violent armed robbery of a sports memorabilia collector in a Vegas hotel. On that night, Simpson put an exclamation mark on his spectacular fall from the height of Hollywood's glamour and glitz to a shadowy world of scams and schemers in Sin City. This book provides details, insights, and facts not previously reported—and reveals the investigation that pieced the crime together and landed an arrogant man who believed he was above the law in a Nevada prison. “Read it in two sittings. . . . Dispelled the idea that the robbery in Las Vegas was more of a misunderstanding than a real crime and that Simpson was merely trying to get back his own property.” —Dennis Griffin, bestselling author of The Rise and Fall of a Casino MobsterSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Part 3 of 3. The initial investigation into the slayings of 22-year-old Cheryl Henry and 21-year-old Andy Atkinson was meticulous, with no stones left unturned, but it resulted in virtually no breaks. Though DNA obtained as the result of the attacker raping Cheryl produced a strong profile, no one Detective Billy Belk and company could find was a match. Then, almost 20 years later, the biggest break in the case occurred when the DNA got a hit in CODIS. But there was a problem – the matched DNA also belonged to an unknown assailant. Underlying this story is another one: the story of advancements in DNA technology. Will new technology, i.e. forensic genealogy, finally give this story an ending? After the bodies of 22-year-old Cheryl Henry and 21-year-old Andy Atkinson were found, on August 23rd and 24th 1990 respectively, Houston Homicide Detective Billy Belk was called to the scene to begin the investigation into their murders. Alongside other homicide detectives, Belk scoured the city for leads – first questioning and taking blood samples from all Andy and Cheryl's known friends and patrons of the bars they frequented. Nothing turned up, even after examining robberies and sexual assaults that, like these Lover's Lane Murders, took place in West Houston. Though the initial investigation was painstaking and thorough, it brought with it nothing but dead ends. When 22-year-old Cheryl Henry and 21-year-old Andy Atkinson met in August of 1990, it was almost as if fate made it so. Both of them had just moved back to Houston, Texas earlier that summer. And both seemingly fell hard for the other the moment they were introduced. But fate turned cruel when only weeks later something terrible, something beyond reason and comprehension happened to the couple cutting not only their romance short, but also their lives. The senseless and brutal act against Cheryl and Andy remains one of Texas's most infamous and mysterious murder cases and is among many other unsolved Lover's Lane slayings. If you have any information about the Lover's Lane murders of Cheryl Henry and Andy Atkinson, please contact Houston area crime stoppers at 713-222-8477.Special thanks to Erica from Southern Fried True Crime for lending us her inimitable voice this episode. Looks like it's back to the perfume counter for me! We watched The Women (1939) with our friend Dennis Griffin and we’re all getting our nails done - Jungle Red! This screwball comedy from the golden age of Hollywood has everything we love - quotable female characters, a fabulous wardrobe and a super gay fashion show that stops the movie in its tracks. The only thing its missing is MEN! Famously there are NO males in this movie - actors, extras, or photos. Even the animals were all female (allegedly). If you thought The Golden Girls was the archetype for Sex and The City think again. Watch The Women then get back to us. This Uber-meta film about the film industry gave the world one of the most glamorous, tragic and straight up bananas performances of the 20th Century in Gloria Swanson’s portrayal of Norma Desmond. William Holden is also giving us major beef-cake daddy vibes as Joe Gillis, the screenwriter turned gigolo who finds himself on the business end of Norma’s amorous affections. If you’re anything like us, after watching this movie you’ll be perfecting your Norma Desmond impression while manufacturing a turban out of a tea towel and prancing around the house in your most glamorous caftan. Vegas Mobster Frank Cullotta, Lawman Dennis Griffin"Casino" The Real StoryGuest: Frank CullottaFrank Cullotta was born in Chicago in 1938. As a youth he embarked on a decades-long criminal career, hanging around with some of the toughest kids on the Windy City's streets. Frank and several of his associates went on to become accomplished thieves, arsonists, and killers. One of those was Frank's friend, Tony “the Ant” Spilotro, who gained notoriety as a ruthless Chicago Outfit enforcer. Tony was the mob's top man in Las Vegas during the 1970s and through the mid-1980s. Frank was his main man for much of that time. Together, they and their gang ruled the Vegas underworld. In 1982, the two men had a falling out that resulted in Frank rolling and becoming a government witness. His testimony was instrumental in putting a number of mobsters behind bars and causing the Outfit to lose its control over Las Vegas. Vegas Mobster Frank Cullotta, Lawman Dennis Griffin "Casino" The Real Story Guest: Frank Cullotta Frank Cullotta was born in Chicago in 1938. The survivors of victims of murder and suspicious death are often victimized twice—first by the loss of their loved one and subsequently by the system they rely on for justice. In pursuit of police transparency, retired investigator Dennis Griffin takes us inside the world of real crime cases to expose the shocking truth behind the alarming number of unsolved murders and suspicious deaths classified as accidental, self-inflicted, or natural—with little to no investigation.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/House-of-Mystery-True-Crime-History. Silenced by the Dixie Mafia is about a big sister who has fought for answers for over five decades. It's about a father who was an ex-alcoholic turned into a gambling addict. A father's decisions would lead to the death of his disabled son and eventually lead to his own demise. Now left alone to find answers and make sense of the chaos is a brave little southern belle named Phyllis. Synova Cantrell may be known for her fedora, but she wears many hats. Synova volunteers with the Missouri Missing organization by highlighting obscure cold cases on her true crime blog to help generate tips. She also runs the Murdered In Mississippi website where she posts her Mobster Monday’s posts highlighting stories about the Dixie Mafia. She firmly believes together we can give grieving families answers, hope, and support. Synova’s also the owner of Synova’s Simply Biz author coaching service. ************************** Crime Wire on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheNewCrimeWire/ Crime Wire on Twitter: https://twitter.com/NewCrimeWire Crime Wire is Produced and Sponsored by ImaginePublicity: http://imaginepublicity.com
Over 30 years ago, after being kidnapped, kept against her will for 3 days, Kathy Shaw was able to escape from the person who repeatedly raped and tortured her. Kathy lived with her secret until 2011 when she decided to pursue her case within the jurisdictions where the incidents happened. As of now, there has been no real investigation and no one held accountable for the crimes committed against her. ************************************************** Crime Wire on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheNewCrimeWire/ Crime Wire on Twitter: https://twitter.com/NewCrimeWire Crime Wire is Produced and Sponsored by ImaginePublicity: http://imaginepublicity.com Music: Bensound.Com

I read your blog, your guest post, and that is just some powerful stuff you have in there about how unsolved murders end up being cold cases. Could you tell us a little bit about how you got involved in cold case investigation? "I met with the mother of the deceased soldier, and she explained to me that the case—this was in 2010, so it was a three-year-old case at that time—the mother explained that she had not gotten any answers through law enforcement and through the Army CID investigations of her son's death, and she wanted us, she wanted my employer to see if we could find out any answers for her as to what may have happened to her son." Dennis [00:02:22]: Yes. I was working as a private investigator for a firm in central New York and upstate New York. And my boss assigned me to investigate the 2007 death of a soldier from the 10th Mountain Division stationed at Fort Drum in Watertown, New York. So, I met with the mother of the deceased soldier, and she explained to me that the case—this was in 2010, so it was a three-year-old case at that time—the mother explained that she had not gotten any answers through law enforcement and through the Army CID investigations of her son's death, and she wanted us, she wanted my employer to see if we could find out any answers for her as to what may have happened to her son. So, that was how I initially got involved. And there was a case of where her son had recently returned from deployment to Afghanistan. He'd just assigned back on the base after a 30-day leave, and this again was in 2007, and he moved off base with another soldier to share an apartment. He was there one night, the next night after they get off duty, he went out bar hopping. He disappeared that night and was never seen again. A missing persons report was filed with the local Watertown City Police Department, and the Army considered him as an AWOL after, I think, it was 48 hours. Six months later, his skeletal remains were found in a field about three miles outside of Watertown. They were in such condition that no toxicology could be done and they couldn't establish a cause or manner of death, so everything was listed as ‘undetermined'. And that was the situation I became involved in trying to find out her son's activities that night; why he disappeared from the bar he was at and how he happened to end ...

What more can be said? Plenty as Burl Barer and Dennis Griffin talk escort agencies and the strange Las Vegas case where phone calls to a mob escort service were being illegally diverted to a competing agency -- well the Feds had to help the mob get their business back while a hitman with a power drill was getting too close to finding the hacker before the Feds. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

Joe Silvestri was a tough kid from the mean streets of New York. He went from street brawler to wearing a tux at the glamorous Copacabana. He eventually provided “muscle” for the Mob, a highly respected and feared fixer—the guy you went to if you had a problem that needed to be resolved. He followed Mob protocol when having a sit down with an adversary: You never break bread with the enemy. Award-winning Mob author Dennis Griffin joins forces with Joey “the Fixer” Silvestri to tell a tale of a bygone era when organized crime dominated New York City. It was a time when neighborhood bosses controlled their turf and some cops would look the other way for the right price. Your best friend one day might want you dead the next. Mariah & Hank Few Mariah and Hank Few were the third and fourth of Donna's five kids. Three years apart in age, but in every other way as close as could be. Then, just a few months before Mariah's 30th birthday, a tragedy blew the family apart. Mariah's live in boyfriend called to say that Mariah was dead. Sometime overnight she had stopped breathing. Toxicology reports later confirmed Mariah died from a drug overdose. Was it a suicide, accidental or something else? Apparently, after Mariah’s death Hank escaped his pain by turning to drugs, himself. Then, on October 9, 2012, the day before what would have been his sister's 30th birthday, Donna saw her son alive for the last time. Two days later he went missing. Friends Hank had been with claimed he wandered into the woods and never came back. His mother didn’t believe it. After the official searches ended, Donna Few and some of her friends conducted their own search of the area. Donna came across Hank’s body laying in the mud. The police declared the death to be an accident. But Donna doesn’t buy it. Ten-year-old Holly Piirainen was abducted around 12 p.m. on August 5, 1993 while she walked with her younger brother Zachary. The children were looking at puppies near her grandmother's cottage in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. When her brothers returned to the area to fetch their sister, all that was left was one of her shoes in the road. Despite a massive search, Holly's body wasn't found until nearly three months later, on Oct. 23, 1993. Although there have been various persons of interest to the police, Holly’s murder remains unsolved. Holly’s aunt, Carla Jackman, and Sarah Stein of the Center for the Resolution of Unresolved Crime, will discuss the case.
Sheryl McCollum of Cold Case Investigative Research Institute will talk about investigating cold cases.
Molly's Law Following the tragic death of his daughter Molly, Larry Young embarked on a mission to get legislation passed in Illinois to benefit survivors of victims of homicides or suspicious deaths. His efforts led to the passage of Molly's Law. Larry will explain what was involved in achieving that goal. HB6083 extends the statute of limitations for wrongful death cases and allows a lawsuit to be brought within five years after the date or the death, or within one year after a criminal case against a perpetrator concludes. HB4715 increases the fines for public bodies for not releasing information that has been requested under the Freedom of Information Act to $10,000, plus $1,000 for each day information is withheld. A young woman’s badly decomposed body was found in the trunk of a tan 1966 Rambler in a parking lot at Southwest 20th Street and Porter Avenue near the Des Moines airport on Thursday, July 10, 1975. The body was later determined to be 21-year-old Diane Marie Schofield. An autopsy indicated Schofield died of strangulation. Her body was found fully clothed in a green halter top and blue jeans, but with no shoes. Her hands were tied behind her back and her feet bound with twine near the ankles. She’d been strangled with a strip of knotted cloth. The body showed no other apparent signs of violence. Based on evidence and witness accounts, investigators believe she was killed sometime after 9 p.m. Monday, July 7. Police said robbery didn’t appear to be a motive because Schofield still wore her $200 watch and several turquoise rings. The 1966 Rambler in which her body was found was registered to the victim. The case has gone cold, but Diane’s sister, Twyla Johnson, refuses to give up her fight for resolution and justice. Twyla will talk about her efforts and the status of the investigation. On September 26, 1967, then 17-year-old Ronald Anderson of Gulfport, Mississippi died from a gunshot wound under his chin. His friend and roommate, Jeffrey Dennis Bass, was in the apartment when Anderson was shot. Bass did not immediately notify the police of Ronald Anderson’s death. Instead, he called his aunt, a nurse, who came to the apartment, and reportedly cleaned Anderson’s body. Authorities were then notified of the shooting. Following a court of inquiry, the death was ruled a suicide. Thirty- six years later, on April 18, 2003, Ronald’s 80-year-old father died a similar death. Dan Anderson was found in the driveway of his Gulfport home, dead from a gunshot wound to his head. His death was also ruled a suicide. However, Dan’s surviving daughter, Phyllis Cook, believes her father and brother were murdered by members of the infamous Dixie Mafia. Phyllis will present the evidence she has amassed in support of her beliefs. The Transparency Project on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetransparenceyproject/
On October 3, 2016, the Walker County (Georgia) Sheriff dispatched a unit to 862 NICK-A-JACK Road in Flintstone, Georgia, re: an attempted suicide. Upon arrival the deputy found 27-year-old Don “DJ” Fickey deceased on his living room floor, from an apparently self-inflicted shotgun wound. According to witness statements, Fickey had allegedly been arguing with his wife just prior to the incident. A clear case of suicide according to the authorities. Not so fast, says DJ’s family. They have a strong case consisting of witnesses and other evidence, that DJ was murdered. DJ’s sister. Amanda Shirley, will discuss the case and what the family is doing to get justice. Brett Wittner Fourteen-year-old high school freshman Brett Wittner of Covington, Louisiana, was brought into the St. Tammany Parish Hospital the morning of Feb. 25, 2012, with a gunshot wound an inch or so behind his right ear. The bullet had fragmented, and bits of it had made their way toward the left side of his head, causing extensive damage to his brain, according to medical records. He died later that day. The police determined that Brett had accidentally shot himself while at a friend’s house. A grand jury subsequently examined the case and declined to indict anyone. However, Brett’s parents don’t agree with that finding and are continuing to look for avenues that will lead to a different outcome. Brett’s mother, Donna Wittner, will discuss the case and where it will go from here. Brenda Lacombe was just 19 years old when her badly beaten and decomposing body was found off Interstate 495 in Harvard, Mass in 1982, and no one has been charged with her killing in the 36 years since. The Worcester County District Attorney's unresolved-case squad continues to investigate the Lowell woman's killing, and now Lacombe's niece is trying to help by raising money to have her aunt's body exhumed so a new autopsy and DNA testing can be conducted. The filing of a wrongful death lawsuit can be a valuable tool in getting an alleged perpetrator to answer questions about the death under oath. It worked well in the OJ Simpson case, for example. However, there are drawbacks, as well, such as filing on time, finding a lawyer and the costs involved. Today, four members of The Transparency Project will discuss their experiences when filing wrongful death suits: the good, the bad and the ugly. A brutal murder has haunted a Bellingham family and baffled state police investigators for almost 40 years. A teenage girl trying to get home was found murdered on the side of the road. Now, Theresa Corley's family is renewing its search for justice for the unimaginable violence that took her life. On Tuesday, December 5, 1978, Corley was a vibrant 19-years-old woman working hard while attending Holliston Junior College with the intention of eventually becoming a pediatrician. But that night, Corley had just one thing on her mind – getting home. She never got home and three days later, her body was found in a ditch on the side of Route 495 not far from where the Bellingham, Milford and Medway city limits converge. Almost 40 years later, her family is still trying to find out why. The Transparency Project on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetransparenceyproject/

Vegas Mobster Frank Cullotta, Lawman Dennis Griffin "Casino" The Real Story Guest: Frank CullottaFrank Cullotta was born in Chicago in 1938. Although the mob issued a contract on his life, Frank survived his time in prison and the Witness Protection Program. He is now a free man. His tell-all biography, Cullotta, is due to be released in May 2007.http://www.amazon.com/Hole-Wall-Gang-Frank-Cullotta/dp/1936759217/ref=as_sl_pc_qf_sp_asin_til?tag=theopprep-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=2KJKEWILBKXOWNET&creativeASIN=1936759217Las Vegas mafiaGuest: Dennis N. Griffin Dennis N. Griffin retired in 1994 after a twenty-year career in investigations and law enforcement in New York State, and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada later that year. In 1996 he wrote his first novel, The Morgue, based on an actual case he investigated. He currently has six mystery/thriller books in print. In 2002, Dennis turned his attention to non-fiction. Policing Las Vegas (Huntington Press, April 2005) follows the evolution of law enforcement in Las Vegas and Clark County from 1905 thru 2005. That successful debut was followed by The Battle for Las Vegas – The Law vs the Mob (Huntington Press, April 2006). This latest book tells the inside story of Chicago Outfit enforcer Tony Spilotro's reign in Vegas, and the war law enforcement waged to remove him. The Hollywood version of that era was reflected in the 1995 movie Casino, in which actor Joe Pesci played a character based on Spilotro. The Mob wanted him, the FBI had him, Mark and Sazzy get to talk to him. That's right folks – Ex-Mobster Frank Cullotta comes out of the shadows to talk to The Vegas Tourist. Right before he was to step out publicly to release his biography Cullotta: The Life of a Chicago Criminal, Las Vegas Mobster and Government Witness (True Crime), Frank Cullotta takes the time to talk with Mark and Sazzy. Not only do we talk to Frank, we also get to talk to his FBI contact Dennis Arnoldy as well as the man who put the book together, our friend Dennis Griffin. We got this honor in front of any other media because of our previous interview with Mob Crime author Dennis Griffin. In fact, at the time of the recording, most media people had no idea Frank Cullotta was even in Las Vegas! We were sworn to secrecy and if you know Sazzy, you know that wasn't an easy thing to do. After months of planning and prepping, Dennis, Dennis, and Mr. Frank arrive at our studios for a Sit-Down. (complete with an unassuming bodyguard) Nothing was really off-limits, but it was just fascinating and fun to sit down with the men we just finished reading about. The man who helped run Las Vegas for the Chicago Mob and the man who helped to bring them down. Getting the How and why it happened. For the non-Vegas Mobster fans, Frank Cullotta was the right-hand man and boyhood friend to Tony “the ant” Spillatro. The man who ran the Chicago Family's business in Vegas. Tony Spilattro was played brilliantly by Joe Pesci in the movie “Casino” Frank also plays a hitman in the movie as well as a technical director.
