In March of 1992, a vicious murder in one of Fort Worth's richest neighborhoods shook the community. Businessman and former banker Jack Koslow, along with his wife, former banker and patron of the arts Caren Koslow, were viciously attacked in their home in the middle of the night. Caren died from her injuries, but thankfully Jack survived. However, strange details at the crime scene led detectives to become suspicious of the lone survivor.Sources:Cochran, M. (1992, April 19). In 2013, Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was murdered in what appeared to be a retaliatory act related to his caseload. Welcome to the second part of this series about the Murray-O'Hair family. After Madalyn, Jon Garth, and Robin mysteriously vanished in September 1995, a year went by without any further investigation. It wasn't until a reporter began asking questions that the story finally got the attention it deserved. In this episode we'll discuss how the case was unraveled, and the clues involve a hundred pounds of gold coins, a perfect diamond, unlikely heroes, and finally, the discovery of the truth after a 5-year hunt for answers.Sources:Bryce, R. From the 1960s and into the 1990s, Madalyn Murray O'Hair was the voice and face of atheism in the United States. Madalyn's closest partners in her business dealings, legal battles, and life were her youngest son Jon Garth Murray and her granddaughter Robin Murray. When the three went missing in September of 1995 under suspicious circumstances, local law enforcement, family, even friends were slow to respond. This is part one of a two-part story describing what happened when “the most hated woman in America” and her family disappeared. Sources:Bryce, R. (1998, November 20). Abducted by aliens? This two-part series is one of the most scandalous and high-profile cases in Texas true crime history: the mysterious death of world-ranked equestrian and socialite Joan Robinson Hill. She was the daughter of wealthy oilman Ash Robinson and lived in the illustrious neighborhood of River Oaks in Houston. The chain of events leading up to and after Joan's death is incredibly bizarre and would prompt one of the most unpredictable medical investigations and legal proceedings ever before seen in the Lone Star State.Sources:Ewing, B. Selena Quintanilla-Perez first stepped into the Tejano music scene in South Texas in the early 1980s. A Mexican-American from Texas whose first language was English, Selena's dedication, hard work, and incredible family bond helped her breakthrough national, cultural, and language barriers in a music genre that was previously always dominated by men. She was the total package: stunningly beautiful, with a powerful singing voice, incredible dance moves, and a sense of humor that disarmed everyone. She was proving herself to be a capable businesswoman and entrepreneur making a name for herself in the fashion industry. And she did all of it before she was senselessly gunned down only two weeks before her 24th birthday. Join us as we discuss the music, fashion, and cultural icon that was Selena in this special two-part series.Sources:Colloff, P. (2010, April). Dreaming of Her. The Huntsville Prison Siege of 1974 was one of the longest hostage-taking events in U.S. history. Three prisoners, led by heroin kingpin Federico Carrasco, carried out an armed takeover of the educational complex at the Huntsville Unit and managed to hold over a dozen hostages captive for 11 excruciating days. The siege would end with a bizarre escape plan, a bloody gunfight, and the deaths of four people.Good News Links:https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2021/06/15/the-worlds-largest-spring-fed-swimming-pool-is-in-texas-and-its-finally-reopening/https://www.click2houston.com/news/local/2021/06/19/good-news-texans-balmorhea-worlds-largest-spring-fed-swimming-pool-reopening-later-this-month/Check out more All Crime No Cattle at our website allcrimenocattle.com.Visit our Patreon page to support the show and earn some awesome rewards: https://patreon.com/allcrimenocattle. In September 2019, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Family members had heard nothing from them for months, but the children's parents never reported the minors missing. Law enforcement visited the home of JJ and Tylee's mother, Lori Vallow, that November to perform a welfare check on the children. Authorities later located Vallow and her husband, Chad Daybell, in Hawaii, where police finally arrested Vallow in February 2020 — months before investigators found JJ and Tylee's remains on Daybell's property. Are Vallow and Daybell responsible for the children's deaths? Did they have anything to do with the mysterious deaths of Daybell's first wife, Tammy, and Vallow's estranged husband, Charles? Stay with us as we remember the victims, JJ and Tylee, and discuss what we know so far about Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell. This week the Nerds discuss the 1982's The Thing. Shea (All Crime, No Cattle) joins us this week as we talk about why The Thing is among our favorite horror movies. John Carpenter directed the movie and it stars Kurt Russell & Keith David. It is based on 1938 Sci-fi novella, “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell, Jr. Critics gave it mostly negative reviews at the time of its release, but more recently gained cult status. "In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot and the camp doctor lead the camp crew in a battle against the vicious creature." This week we will be discussing a horribly gruesome tale from not too far away. Back in 1993, a rural area on the outskirts of the DFW metroplex was forever changed by a pair of gruesome murders. Perhaps it was just a random one time event, or maybe this was just the beginning of a potential trail of destruction at the hands of a possible serial killer. Prior to June, 2001, a newsworthy event at Potter Park outside of Lansing, Michigan would be music being played too loud from a car stereo. Occasionally, police would be called on a report of kids drinking alcohol in the parking lot after dark. That changed in the middle of a perfect summer afternoon, when a shot rang out, and a 41-year-old mother of two fell to the ground. The shot had come from a high-powered rifle, and the sniper hadn’t been seen by any witnesses. Bernita White had been walking into the park’s zoo with her 5-year-old daughter. For nearly 18 years, Bernita’s shooting death has gone unsolved. Although police have interviewed more than 500 people, no arrests have ever been made… leaving those closest to Bernita White wonder who could have wanted her dead, and why. PART #1 of 2 - For Lisa and Dave Madill, December 1st, 2014 marked the beginning of a never-ending nightmare. Their 25-year-old daughter was missing. Shannon who was the youngest of their four children had failed to show up for a planned outing with her older brother Brett, which was unusual…but not completely out of character for her. In October 1971, on a rural lane south of the village of Ratoath, Co Meath, Una Lynsky disappeared while walking a short distance from a bus stop to her home. Around that time, screams were heard and a strange car was seen driving up and down the lane. But three local lads, Dick Donnelly, Martin Kerrigan, and Martin Conmey found that they were the ones who had drawn the attention of the notorious Murder Squad of the Garda Siochana. By the end of the year, two young people from Porterstown Lane would be dead. Two trials would follow and a series of appeals to try and clear a man's name of guilt that did not belong to him. As far as I know, I'm the first journalist who has ever interviewed pastor Jane Whaley. Heck, I might be the only member of the media to have attended church service. How was I able to pull this off? The short answer is, I have no idea. In fact, when the executive producer of the upcoming A&E series on Word of Faith Fellowship found out about my exclusive interview, he gave me a call. He asked me, "I just want to know one thing... how did you do it?" I told him, "I just asked nicely?" (UPDATE: A&E pulls the docu-series the night before it was scheduled to air) My first contact with Jane Whaley The last people to get an invitation to the Word of Faith Fellowship got the cops called on them. However, that didn't stop me from contacting Jane. I have Jane Whaley's email address and intend to use it. Besides, what's the worst thing that could happen? Get arrested for trespassing? He was supposed to be a force for good in the system. A criminal justice major who went to one party off campus. It was the last thing he ever did. This is one case among many. But some who listen to this month’s episode will say it’s many cases explained by one. So far, our cases have stopped at the borders of American law enforcement; the failures of agencies, the era and date in time of the case, and sometimes just plain bad luck. This month, unavoidably, features an added dimension; one that will inevitably expand our conversation beyond the case at hand. But this remains true: a young man’s life was taken, and it needn’t have been. And nobody is today in jail for the crime. When we begin our investigation of a case each month, we don’t really (honestly) have any idea how it’s going to go! So far in this series, we’ve brought you first person investigators and people directly related to the case in some way. In this case, though it may or may not surprise you once you learn about more, we weren’t able to talk to anyone with direct knowledge of the events or the investigation in the amount of time we have to examine the case. Sometimes, that’s going to happen. So, we had a choice: we could keep working the case, in the hopes that we landed our sources in a few weeks, or even more… which would delay the chapter’s release; we could bag the whole chapter and start over; or we could release sort of a partial chapter. And that is what this is… we’re calling this month’s single download our first Dossier episode. Are you going to the first annual True Crime Podcast Festival in July 2019 in Chicago? You should! We will be there along with many other amazing podcasts including but not limited to some of our personal favorites such as: Wine & Crime , Getting Off , Trace Evidence , Criminology, and All Crime No Cattle! When Nancy Burnette was appointed by the courts to be a guardian ad litem, she knew her job wasn’t going to be easy. A guardian ad litem is someone who represents kids in the foster care system. It’s her job to place children in homes with the right parents. If she doesn’t get right, her decision can cause lasting damage on these vulnerable children. This was a challenge Nancy was willing to take. So, put yourself in Nancy’s shoes for a second. If you had to place a child in the custody of the Word of Faith Fellowship family, what would you do? This episode explores the series of questions surrounding the Word of Faith and accusations about their grip on local government. For example, did you know the Jane Whaley’s son in law, Frank Webster, was an assistant state prosecutor at a nearby county? There are also accusations that a local social workers undermined abuse investigations at the Word of Faith Fellowship? The list of accusations go on and on. In this episode titled “Allegations of Abuse and Corruption,” I’ll do my best to describe some of the political controversy surrounding the Word of Faith Fellowship. ------- See the front page article on Pretend Radio and the church's response: http://pretendradio.org/word-of-faith-fellowship-prophet-allegations-of-child-abuse-and-corruption/ ------- Also, I am excited to announce that Pretend Radio is going to be attending the first annual True Crime Podcast Festival on July 13, 2019 in Chicago! Two individuals particularly stuck out to police and Del and Mary in Suzie's disappearance and murder. One became a person of interest early on and the other, much to Mary and Del's dismay, seemed to have not been taken incredibly seriously by law enforcement. A well-known drifter also enters the case several years after. This episode we enlisted the help of Shea from All Crime No Cattle and Erica from Southern Fried True crime. Can law enforcement's “odd couple” survive fights, shootouts, and a sniper who wants them dead? What about their wives, and their captain, all of whom have had it with them both? In my first episode, I was fortunate enough to share the story of a close friend, as well as that of another domestic violence survivor, in an effort to demonstrate why people might stay in a hurtful relationship and how lives can change based on one or two small decisions. This time, I'm looking a bit more at the accumulation of experiences and culture and social expectations, and how those all build to create long-term, durable relationships that take belittlement and violence for granted. My guest in this episode has a long-term view and can describe the atmosphere better than I can, both at large and within the family... because she's my grandmother. My mother appears in Episode 8, and now you'll hear: my grandmother is pretty badass, too. Promos from The Cult of Domesticity and All Crime No Cattle, plus my first-ever sponsor and happy to have them! Sudio Sweden: https://goo.gl/sdeybs ...ad by Jacob, code BLISS15.

In episode 18 of Murder and Such, Haley and Hunter take a VERY lighthearted approach to the traveling corpse of Elmer McCurdy, a one time train robber turned into a mummy. Elmer had an afterlife that was much more exciting and thought provoking than his 31 years as a living, breathing human. Join us while we discuss his less than successful outlaw career, and the trip across the country that took place after his death. Please, if you can, go donate to the Humboldt Broncos GoFundMe page that we mentioned towards the end of the show. It would mean a lot to us, and even more to the friends and families of the people who perished in the accident. https://www.gofundme.com/funds-for-humboldt-broncos Be sure to check out our supported podcasts for this episode!] Mens Rea Podcast is available on all of your Podcast services, and on twitter as @MensReaPod! Follow Vanessa as she takes you through one of the most unnerving cleanups done to date. Although not the biggest nor the dirtiest, this job is full of nasty surprises and eyebrow-raising situations.
