“If you want a remarkable life, you have to commit to doing it.” – Debbie Millman The iconic Debbie Millman is on the show. I have been an admirer of her work for years. For 20 years, Debbie was the President of Sterling Brands, one of the world's leading branding consultancies. Under her leadership, Sterling grew to 150 employees in five offices. While there, she worked on the logo and brand identity for Burger King, Hershey's, Haagen Dazs, Tropicana, Star Wars, Gillette, and the No More movement. Debbie is currently working with Law & Order SVUactor and activist Mariska Hargitay's Joyful Heart Foundation to eradicate sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and the rape-kit backlog. In 2009 Debbie co-founded the world's first graduate program in branding at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Today we discuss branding as well as how to design our lives intentionally. All of the show notes can be found at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/224 WE DISCUSS: The difference between design vs. branding “Branding is about manufacturing meaning through symbols and objects, and design is the expression of that meaning.” What it takes to create a new brand or rebrand. You have to ask one crucial question when working on a brand: “Why does the world need this?” Her work for the Joyful Heart Foundation and how she got involved as the Chairman of the Board. Why she believes a person shouldn't aspire to be a brand. What drives her to impact others. Her 5 Year Life Plan that she took with Milton Glaser that transformed her life. Big dreams all manifested within 13 years, within ten years, 80%-90% of it was achieved. The importance of declaring your wants. Declaration of intention. Debbie teaches her students the 10 Year Life Plan at the School of Visuals Arts. How at the age of eight she created a picture that turned into her adult reality – like a vision board. Her advice on how to live a creative life. Her thoughts on advertising during COVID, and much more! DEBBIE'S 3 BEST TIPS FOR DESIGNING A GOOD LIFE: “Continually think if not now, when?” “If you want a remarkable life, you have to commit to doing it.” Don't edit your dreams before you try. We often determine what's impossible before you determine if it's possible. “Try before you decide you can't. You get over failure and rejection, but you don't ever really get over regret.” “Don't give up on love.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Debbiemillman.com – website Debbie on IG @debbiemillman on Twitter Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits by Debbie Millman Brand Bible: The Complete Guide to Building, Designing, and Sustaining Brands by Debbie Millman Debbie talked about writing out an ideal day 10 years from now. I think what makes it much more difficult to, to have the courage, to continue to experiment, you know, look at somebody like Joni Mitchell or Rickie Lee Jones, people that at their moment of peak success, commercially said, you know, I'm going to do jazz now, or I'm going to do instrumental now, or I'm going to do something else now. And you know, the word once again, you know, that changed the world. Even Dylan, when he went electric, you know, the world hates that, you know, we're supposed to be able to deliver an expectation that people are used to and feel comfortable with. And I think any type of huge success like that really sets you up to feel like you can't veer from that without either disrupting your level of success or disappointing people or outraging people, you know, the very things that thrill and delight and excite. Some people are the very things that outrage others. And once you start to have to gauge where you're going to sit in that continuum, you know, I think the original work is then pretty much obliterated,” so says Debbie Millman, author, educator, curator and host of one of the first, and longest running podcasts, Design Matters. Debbie is a creator to her core - she started her career at Sterling Brands, one of the world's leading branding consultancies, and for twenty years led the company as President, working on the logo and brand identity for some of the world's most prominent brands, from Burger King, Hershey's, Haagen Dazs and Tropicana, to Star Wars and Gillette. Her writing and illustrations have been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Magazine, Print Magazine, and Fast Company. She is the author of seven books, the co-owner and editorial director of PrintMag.com, and co-founded the world's first graduate program in branding at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her podcast, which has been nominated for six Webby awards, has been highlighted on over 100 “Best Podcasts” lists and was designated by Apple as one of their “All Time Favorite Podcasts”, has spent the past 17 years interviewing nearly 500 of the most creative people in the world.  Today she joins me to discuss her most recent book, Why Design Matters: Conversations with the World's Most Creative People. This book, Debbie tells us, was born of her desire to stoke her own creative fire in a time when she was working as a creative but feeling artistically dead. Debbie regales us with tales of the creative processes of the greats, including the inevitable failures, rejections, and obstacles that are part of any creative journey, showing us how they persevere to create beauty in the face of adversity. In our conversation, we discuss the danger of expectations, the courage it takes to create and questions around who gets to call themselves an artist. We talk about the stereotype of the pained artist, finding inspiration, and how she teaches her students to refine and create their original voice.  She leaves us with her thoughts about personal brands and the way in which they limit our identity and our ability to continually pursue the new or experimental.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Fear around the new…(10:15) Who gets to call themselves an artist?...(17:50) The courage in experimentation…(22:52) On personal brands…(43:00) MORE FROM DEBBIE MILLMAN: Why Design Matters: Conversations with the World's Most Creative People More Books by Debbie Millman Visit Debbie's Website Listen to Debbie's Podcast, Design Matters on Apple Podcasts Follow Debbie on Twitter and Instagram Learn more about your ad choices. Are you a passionate fan of Design Matters like I am? It's one of the world's oldest podcasts and one of the best shows out there. Debbie Millman scratches her insatiable curiosity and explores what it means to live a rich, fulfilling, intentional life with luminaries like Brené Brown, Cheryl Strayed, Brandon Stanton, Seth Godin, and, of course, Roxane Gay. (All guests of 3 Books, too! Clearly we have tethers between our hearts.)   Where do we start with Debbie Millman?   Well, she's ‘one of the most creative people in business' according to Fast Company and one of the ‘most influential designers working in the world today' says Graphic Design USA. She's got a wonderful new book called Why Design Matters: Conversations with the World's Most Creative People, a giant, heavy, amazing tome put out by Harper Design which serves as a compressed set of wisdom and values from Design Matters.   Debbie is the author of seven other books including: How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer and Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits. She co-founded the world's first graduate program in branding at The School of Visual Arts back in 2010. For 20 years before that she was the President of Sterling Brands, one of the world's leading branding consulting agencies. What did she do there? No big deal: She helped design brand identities and logos for Star Wars, Burger King, Häagen Dazs, Gillette and even the No More movement.   Is she an activist? She sure is!   She's also working with the Joyful Heart Foundation to eradicate sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse and the rape kit back log.   Fascinating and containing many multitudes, it was an honor and privilege to welcome Debbie Millman on 3 Books to talk about: how you avoid limiting possibilities, why regret cannot be metabolized, what happens when you're public about your shame, what makes for a great interview, and, of course, what are the incredible Debbie Millman's 3 most formative books!   Let's flip the page and jump into Chapter 97 now…   What You'll Learn: What makes for a good interview? How do you prepare for interviews? How can we find our identity? What are the different types of happiness? What is organic happiness vs synthetic happiness? Why is regret so damaging? How do we navigate ‘gaping wounds of need'? What can help a self-soothing journey? How can we heal from shame? How do we learn to slow down? Why do feelings of accomplishment not last? How do we orient ourselves towards what really matters most?   You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/97   Leave us a voicemail. Welcome to episode #800 of Six Pixels of Separation. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #800 - Host: Mitch Joel. I'm not one to celebrate milestones. Still, I found myself wondering who might make for a fascinating conversation if episode number 800 ever happened. I wanted it to be someone that I know, love and respect. There was only one choice: Debbie Millman. Debbie has been creating her own podcast since 2005. It is the first and longest running podcast about design. Artist and designer Debbie Millman has been fascinated by the power of branding for most of her life. And as the host of the Design Matters podcast (which was recently translated into a book, out next month) and chair of the School of Visual Arts's Masters in Branding program, she constantly has branding on her mind. For Millman, part of the allure of logos, identities, and marketing stems from the exercise of clearly and confidently expressing a purpose and meaning—a challenge that she has concurrently grappled with on a personal level. The parallels between aims in her work and life are no coincidence: Millman's professional projects are often her way of searching for answers to life's deepest questions.Millman has long considered how design can reveal people's innermost desires. She has worked at several prominent New York City agencies, including Sterling Brands, for which she served as chief marketing officer and president of its design division for 20 years, and was part of teams that created identities for brands such as 7Up, Burger King, Tropicana, and Twizzlers. She even moonlighted as the first-ever creative director of the pioneering hip-hop radio station Hot 97. Over the years, her career has helped her recognize the importance of slowing down, and of trusting that she doesn't have to approach everything—writing, teaching, special projects, love—as if it's her last chance to experience it.On this episode, Millman describes her quest to feel comfortable in her own skin, talking with Spencer about the benefits of being a good listener, branding and marketing as ways to manufacture meaning, and why she doesn't want to peak until the very end of her life.Show notes:Full transcriptdebbiemillman.com(03:50): Roxane Gay(06:34): Millman's “Together Apart” poster for #CombatCovid(08:15): RAND Art + Data(11:58): Master's in Branding program at the School of Visual Arts(13:19): Why Design Matters: Conversations with the World's Most Creative People (HarperCollins)(13:19): Design Matters podcast(33:52): Look Both Ways (HOW Books)(50:09): Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits (SkyHorse Publishing)(54:35): Millman's 2019 TED Talk, “How Symbols and Brands Shape Humanity”(01:17:16): How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer (Simon & Schuster)

I shared the story in this episode, and hope it helps you to not let the fear of rejection get in the way of you trying for the things you want!  Dealing with rejections is one of topics I talk to Debbie in our conversation. We also talked about why courage is more important than confidence, and how what seemed like the worst thing that happened in her career actually turned out to be the best thing. You’ll also hear about a very important assignment she did in Milton Glaser’s class at School of Visual Arts about how to design and manifest your dream life. This is the episode I mentioned "How to Turn No into Yes"- (https://celinalee.co/episode37/) where I talked about all the rejections I got while trying to write my book, which was my childhood dream. A lot has changed since this interview but we still remain the same flawed humans with the same needs and fears and I have no doubt you will be inspired by this amazing women and our conversation.

Welcome my CNFin' buddy, how are YOU, doing? I'm @BrendanOMeara, Brendan O'Meara in real life and this is @CNFPod, or The Creative Nonfiction Podcast, the show where I speak to badass writers, filmmakers, and producers about the art and craft of telling true stories. If you want to get better at the form, you've come to the right place. This is our little corner of the Internet. If you're here for the first time, welcome, welcome, crack open a notebook, pour yourself a cup of coffee and settle in, CNFers. Where to start, where to start? My guest is Debbie Millman. Yes, you heard that correctly. Your ears did not deceive you. I didn't bother digging too deep into Debbie's origin story because there are several podcasts where she dives into that and I wanted to spare her from repeating herself. Maybe I was too timid in that regard, but I figured I'd steer the ship toward other things. At this point in the introduction is usually where I riff …. on what's going on, maybe offer some insights into how you can improve your work by sharing something I find helpful. But...sometimes the most helpful thing is getting the cuss out of the way. In 17 words Debbie Millman is a writer, designer, educator, artist, brand consultant, and host of the podcast Design Matters. But in a single word? Debbie is an inspiration. She made a name for herself as a graphic designer and branding guru after years and years of rejections, failures, and false starts. She's persistent sometimes, she admits, to a fault. Her writing is tight and playful. It's deep, meaningful, resonant, and beautiful to look at as most of her essays are illustrated in her whimsical way of inking and penciling. As for her career in branding, If you've seen the Burger King logo, various Pepsi products, Tropicana, Haagen Daas, and Twizzlers (totally twisted) then you've seen her work. If it makes the supermarket look prettier, odds are Debbie had a hand in that. She was the president of Sterling Brands for 20 years, and under her stewardship grew the company from 15 employees to 150. But after a decade of being a titan in her field, from 1995 to 2005, often at the expense of her own creative projects, her writing, her drawing, her painting, she was granted the opportunity to host an internet radio program that, I must add, she had to pay to produce, called Design Matters. This was in 2005. 14 years later and she's still doing it and for my money she, along with Joe Donahue of WAMC Northeast Public Radio, are the best interviews around. I have a reason for this and I talk about this with Debbie. She has interviewed Milton Glaser, Malcolm Gladwell, Anne Lamott, Seth Godin, Shepard Fairey, and hundreds more. Design Matters is a testament to her endurance and generosity. It wasn't until she had done the show for several years that it really began to gain traction, win awards, and become the behemoth that it is today. I could go on and on and I must apologize for my titanic nerves in this episode. I mean I suffer from them all the time, but this one was especially bad, for that I'm sorry, but getting the chance to speak to Debbie for nearly an hour was such an esteemed an honor that I had trouble keeping my you know what together. You made it this far so I must say thanks for listening. I do this for you guys so you know that even the best of the best deal with the same bullshit we're all dealing with. If you haven't already, consider subscribing to the show on iTunes, Google Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher and subvert the algorithms across the social platforms. If you liked the show, share it with just one friend. Email them the link or share it on social media. And tag me @BrendanOMeara and @CNFPod so I can toast to your awesomeness. Consider leaving an honest review on iTunes as well. I want to see it hit 100 ratings. We're gonna get there in 2019, but it starts with you. If you have five minutes to spare, please give the show some love. I also have a monthly newsletter where I send out my reading recommendations, cool articles, and anything you might have missed from the world of the podcast. Once a month. No spam. Can't beat it. Today, Joyful Heart is a leading national organization with a mission to transform society's response to sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, survivors' healing, and to end this violence forever. Debbie and I discuss: Her accomplishments, and challenges in growing one of the first podcasts; Her history with Sterling Brands and the over 200+ logos and branding campaigns she and her team developed; Giving up, failure and pushing yourself “beyond” to achieve success; Movements like #MeToo and the challenges behind creating branding for memorable social justice movements; Courage over confidence;  Why confidence is overrated and how to develop both courage and confidence; The differences between branding products or causes and branding people. Debbie Millman   If you imagine less, less will be what you undoubtedly deserve. Do what you love and don't stop until you get what you love. Work as hard as you can, imagine immensities, don't compromise and don't waste time. Start Now. Not 20 years from now, not two weeks from now. Now. ~ Debbie Millman   Debbie Millman is a designer, artist, author, educator, CMO of Sterling Brands + host of Design Matters, the world's first + longest running podcast on design. I love this quote for all of the things Debbie Millman is saying here. If you imagine less, then you deserve what you get. Therefore, always Dream Big! Remember, the mind will provide what you ask it. Do what you love - It isn't really work if you are doing what you love. . . And don't stop until you get what you love. - If you love something keep working until you get it! Don't give up until you achieve it. Don't Stop! Work as hard to get what you want, what you love. Imagine Immensities! DREAM BIG! I love that word IMMENSITIES! It conveys a meaning of something so much bigger than BIG! Don't Compromise - If you want something - Don't just take something because it's easy. Ask for what you want. Expect it, Demand It! The universe will get you what you ask for. Don't ask for less! DON'T WASTE TIME - Don't wait 20 years, don't wait 2 weeks, START NOW! NOW! Go out today and make it a great day!  Make it an Immense Day! Make it a Your Day! Demand It!  Now! The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

Today, The Trauma Therapist | Podcast shifts a bit. Today I’m interviewing world-renowned designer Debbie Millman who shares her story of courage, healing, and hope. I first heard Debbie on Tim Ferriss’ podcast and was struck by her candor, strength, and vulnerability. She was on Tim’s show to speak about her illustrious design career. However, at a specific point in the interview, the tone definitely changed when Debbie began sharing the story of her childhood. It was at that point that I was drawn in by the courage with which Debbie spoke about her past, her journey, and the hope she’s hung on to all these years. My hope is that we all can not only learn from her experience but as trauma workers, be inspired by the strength and hope in her words. Debbie Millman was named “one of the most influential designers working today” by Graphic Design USA, Debbie Millman is also an author, educator, brand strategist and host of the podcast Design Matters. As the founder and host of Design Matters, the first and longest running podcast about design, Millman has interviewed nearly 300 design luminaries and cultural commentators, including Massimo Vignelli, Milton Glaser, Malcolm Gladwell, Dan Pink, Barbara Kruger, Seth Godin and more. In the 11 years since its inception, the show has garnered over a million downloads per year, a Cooper Hewitt National Design Award and—most recently—iTunes designated it one of the best podcasts of 2015.  Debbie’s written and visual essays have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, New York Magazine, Print Magazine, Design Observer and Fast Company. She is the author of two books of illustrated essays: Look Both Ways and Self-Portrait As Your Traitor; the latter of which has been awarded a Gold Mobius, a Print Typography Award, and a medal from the Art Directors Club. Her artwork has been exhibited at the Boston Biennale, Chicago Design Museum, Anderson University, School of Visual Arts, Long Island University, The Wolfsonion Museum and the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art.  Debbie is the author of six books, including two collections of interviews that have extended the ethos and editorial vision of Design Matters to the printed page: How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer and Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits. Both books have been published in over 10 languages. For 20 years, Debbie was the President of the design division at Sterling Brands, where she worked with over 200 of the world’s largest brands, including the redesign of Burger King, merchandising for Star Wars and the positioning and branding of the No More movement. She is also President Emeritus of AIGA, one of five women to hold the position in the organization’s 100-year history and a past board member and treasurer of the New York Chapter. Currently, Debbie is the Editorial and Creative Director of Print Magazine, the oldest magazine about design in the United States, and a board member of actor and activist Mariska Hargitay’s Joyful Heart Foundation, Legendary Performance Space 122 and the venerable Type Directors Club.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
