Paul tells the church at Galatia, “Yall were running the race with all you had, exerting all the effort you could, but something happened and it has hindered your running.” What happened? Circumcision. It's hard to run when you've had a knife cut into private part! That is a lot of pain and it takes a little while to heal up! Paul uses two words in the Greek to explain what he means by “hinder” but we don't fully grasp it in the English translations. Check out this podcast to see what Paul means and ask. Yourself this question, “Am I giving my all for Jesus? For the kingdom? Or is something hindering me from fully serving him?

As we are reintroduced to the slothful man and the sluggard, we realize that they are one in the same, and something that every Christian should want no part of.
Welcome to the fourth terrace of Purgatory proper!Dante and Virgil reach the top of the stairs just as night falls and the pilgim loses all possibility of forward momentum. He hesitates--from sloth?--and turns to Virgil--still damned!--to explain where they are.Virgil, the guide of Purgatory. It's still as shocking as it was sixteen cantos ago!Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we stop at the cusp of the fourth terrace of Purgatory proper.Would you like to help underwrite the many costs of this podcast? And why does this fourth terrace of Purgatory seem so very silent and empty?[07:33] Is Dante the pilgrim hesitant? Or slothful?[08:59] Why is Virgil's explanation of the terrace so opaque, so poetic?[10:25] Is COMEDY beginning to value opacity?[12:37] What is the medieval understanding of sloth? How would Dante define it?[17:26] How does PURGATORIO, Canto XVII, match two cantos in INFERNO (XI and XVII)?[21:02] Reading the passage again: PURGATORIO, Canto XVII, lines 73 - 90.

But if you've always been a little fuzzy about exactly what sloth is playwright essayist and satirist Wendy wasserstein to the rescue. In this 2005 interview Wasserstein explains -- with tongue in cheek -- how to achieve your inner sloth. The apostle Paul encouraged all believers to pursue and intensify their zeal. In his words, it is a trait that should be fanned into flame. Hence, it is important to ask ourselves, where does our zeal lie? Listen as Pastor David exhorts us not to be lazy or indifferent about our zeal.
Sermon Resources: 1. Audio clip is not our own - from Disney's "Zootopia" (2016) 2. Sloth is "aversion to the divine good in us." -Thomas Aquinas, "Summa Theologiae" 3. “Sloth is not to be confused with laziness. Lazy people, people who sit around and watch the grass grow, may be people at peace. Their sun-drenched, bumblebee dreaming may be the prelude to action or itself an act well worth the acting. Slothful people, on the other hand, may be very busy people. They are people who go through the motions, who fly on automatic pilot. Like somebody with a bad head cold, they have mostly lost their sense of taste and smell. They know something's wrong with them, but not wrong enough to do anything about. Other people come and go, but through glazed eyes they hardly notice them. They are letting things run their course. They are getting through their lives.” -Frederick Buechner, "Wishful Thinking" 4. “The puzzle is why so many people live so badly. Not so wickedly, but so inanely. Not so cruelly, but so stupidly. There is little to admire and less to imitate in the people who are prominent in our culture. We have celebrities but not saints. Famous entertainers amuse a nation of bored insomniacs. Infamous criminals act out the aggressions of timid conformists. Petulant and spoiled athletes play games vicariously for lazy and apathetic spectators. People, aimless and bored, amuse themselves with trivia and trash. Neither the adventure of goodness nor the pursuit of righteousness gets headlines.” -Eugene Peterson, "Run With The Horses" 5. Article on "languishing:" https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/19/well/mind/covid-mental-health-languishing.html 6. “To our chagrin we discover that the declaration of self-determination has issued not in a race of free, masterly humans, but rather in a race that can be described by its poets and dramatists only as bored, vexed, frantic, embittered, and sniffling.” -Thomas Howard, "Chance or The Dance?" 7. “Sloth is the sin that believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, loves nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive only because there is nothing it would die for.” -Dorothy Sayers, "Letters to a Diminished Church: Passionate Arguments for the Relevance of Christian Doctrine" 8. “Can you hate the world enough to want to change it, and yet love it enough to see it worth changing?” -G.K. "The Lonely Century," by Noreena Hertz 11. “‘Nothing' is very strong: strong enough to steal away a man's best years not in sweet sins but in a dreary flickering of the mind over it knows not what and knows not why, in the gratification of curiosities so feeble that the man is only half aware of them, in drumming of fingers and kicking of heels, in whistling tunes that he does not like…You will say that these are very small sins; and doubtless, like all young tempters, you are anxious to be able to report spectacular wickedness. But do remember, the only thing that matters is the extent to which you separate the man from the Enemy [God]. It does not matter how small the sins are provided that their cumulative effect is to edge the man away from the Light and out into the ‘Nothing.' Murder is no better than cards if cards can do the trick. Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one—the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.” -C.S. Lewis, "The Screwtape Letters" 12. I greet you in Jesus' precious Name. It is Sunday morning, the 3rd of December 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan with a thought for today. For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.Hebrews 13:14This world is not our permanent home. We must walk very carefully. Don't put too much effort into your home in this world because you won't be here for very long. Our eyes are peeled for the city to come. We are so looking forward to the city of God, which is coming very soon. Do you remember the book The Pilgrim's Progress, written by John Bunyan in 1678? He wrote that book in jail. He was put in jail for his faith. John Bunyan tells the story of a man by the name of Christian, and Christian could be you or me. Christian has left his home, the City of Destruction, and he is making his way to the Celestial City, which is heaven. It's a fiction story, it's one I recommend you to read to your children. They say next to the Bible it is maybe the most-read Christian book ever. Christian, on his journey, meets different characters. He meets characters like Slothful who says: "Just relax, there is no rush, take your time"; Worldly Wisdom, who teaches him to just let all things go, then he meets some giants. Faith is a giant; Hope is a giant; Evangelist is a giant who encourages him to keep going. Some are negative and some are encouraging. Then eventually, he crosses the River of Death and arrives in the Heavenly City, the Celestial City, where the streets are paved with gold; where there's no more weeping; where there are no more tears of anger; where there's no more hatred; no violence - only peace. There's not even a sun there because Jesus Christ will be the light in that city. I want to encourage you today to keep your eyes fixed on the Lord Jesus Christ and home time, and that will encourage you to continue on your journey, which will lead to everlasting life.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

“Becoming Like Jesus Together" Together: Building Relationships in a Broken World Rainier Valley Church - Seattle, Washington - Sunday, April 2 7 Biblical Qualities of Christian Love Genuine (12:9a) Truthful (12:9b) Family-Like (12:10a) Honorable (12:10b) Passionate (12:11) Persistent (12:12) Practical (12:13) 1.Genuine (12:9a) 1 John 4:19 “We love, because he first loved us” You'll never have to love someone more annoying than you've been to God You'll never have to forgive someone more than God has forgiven you You'll never be as patient with someone as God has been patient with you. Do you really love your Christian brothers and sisters? Do you say you'll pray for them and actually pray for them? Do you talk one way when the person is there and another when they aren't? Is your love genuine? Are there areas of hypocrisy in your life where you're more polite than godly?2.Truthful (12:9b) Based on your closest friendship, who are you becoming? In this season, who is speaking truth into your life? Are you growing in hating sin and loving righteousness? What sins and evil do you abhor? How can you hold fast to what is good? 3. Family-Like (12:10a) Church is family, you look out for each other, you stick up for each other. We're family. What the difference between going to a restaurant as a customer and going to a family dinner as a member of the family? What does it look like to love other Christians like family? What would change in the way you see your time, treasure and talent? How can you personally grow in a warm love toward other believers? 4.Honorable (12:10b) We show honor to others because they're made in the image of God so they have inherent value. We show honor to those in authority because God created a world of hierarchy and responsibility. What does it look like to outdo one another in showing honor? How can you show honor to those in positions of authority in your life? What are some behaviors in your life that might actually be dishonoring? Are you a competitive person? Be competitive in showing honor. 5.Passionate (12:11) To be Slothful is to be slow, lazy, dull, sluggish, drowsy, listless, careless, neglectful, apathetic, disinterested, indifferent, careless, unconcerned. to be Fervent is to be boiling, zealous, passionate, vigorous, energetic, spirited. God has called us to passionate service. Stir one another up to love and good works… Encourage, strengthen, embolden. What books, people, music has God used to stir you up and increase your zeal? How can we stir one another up to love and good works practically? Where are their areas of sloth in our lives? 6.Persistent (12:12) Christian life must be persistent through the good times and the hard times. What areas in your life do you need to rejoice in hope? What tribulations in your life do you need patience in? How can I cultivate a prayerful life over a complaining life? 7.Practical (12:13) When someone needs a job, clothes, food, rent, direction, or help in some way, we don't just pray for them, we HELP them! God has given you a house, money, food, friends, opportunities not as an end in themselves but as the means to bless others. We're suppose to be a conduits, channels of God's blessings through us to a needy world. Are you functioning as a river or a reservoir? Do God's blessings stop with you or move through you to others? What opportunities do you have to bless and serve those around you this week? How can we pray for each other this week? “Our relationship with each other is the criterion the world uses to judge whether our message is truthful – Christian community is the final apologetic.” - Francis Schaeffer
Paul was no fan of the welfare state. His disdain for laziness was so strong that he gave the Thessalonians the memorable command, If a man will not work, let him not eat. Salutation, SR Tribe! Welcome, and thank you for coming back for another hearty serving of The Sophisticatedly Ratchet Podcast, giving the real in a world of fake. The Seven Deadly sins can be thought of as dispositions toward sin and separation from God. Most of the seven deadly sins are defined by Dante Alighieri (c. 1264–1321) as perverse or corrupt versions of love; lust, gluttony, and greed are all excessive or disordered love of good things; and wrath, envy, and pride are perverted love directed toward others' harm. The sole exception is sloth, which is a deficiency of love. In today's episode, we explore Sloth. Sloth refers to a peculiar jumble of notions dating from antiquity and including mental, spiritual, pathological, and physical states. It may be defined as the absence of interest or habitual disinclination to exertion. Join us as we discuss when complacency turns into sloth; unpack the laziest point in our life, and how we overcome sloth? In Proverbs 6:6-11, we study the example of the ant to learn how to be a hard worker. Man's natural tendency is to be lazy and unproductive. We love sleep, make excuses not to work, and are quick to procrastinate. We need to combat those lazy tendencies and rather learn to be disciplined even when our feelings want us not to be. By remembering the benefit of work and experiencing the joy of work we can resolve to be disciplined. May we cultivate a hard-working attitude now that leads to Christ-honoring diligence in our lives. Slothful Summer (Proverbs 6:6-11) | Nathan Yovichin Compass Bible Church Junior High Ministry
