On today's episode, I talk to musician David Bazan. Originally from Phoenix, AZ, David started Pedro the Lion in 1995, and his first full-length album It's Hard to Find a Friend was released three years later on Jade Tree. In 2005, David recorded a more synthesizer-focused album as Headphones, and then a year later, Pedro the Lion broke up. David continued to record music under his own name, releasing albums on labels like Barsuk and Polyvinyl, and then in 2017, Pedro the Lion got back together and began a five-album cycle, with each album focusing on a city that David grew up in. The most recent was last year's Santa Cruz, which came out on Polyvinyl/Big Scary Monsters. 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Headphones' lone album, and to commemorate the occasion, Suicide Squeeze just released a remastered edition at the end of May, and folks, it's just as fantastic as it was back in 2005! Though a rather one-off side-project, David Bazan says his Headphones LP may be his most stressful artistic expression. Though the band Pedro the Lion was his breadwinning endeavor at the time, he admits to losing interest in guitar, album by album. Suddenly, dabbling in synthesizers led to not just a new avenue for songwriting, but a borderline obsession, bringing his gear everywhere from lakeside family vacations to vacant movie theatre parking lots in order to perfect these unconventional sounds, alone. Putting the album to tape was a whole other hill to climb, leading to David staying up several days straight, attempting to finish incomplete songs literal minutes before the rest of his band would hear them for the first time, and then record them. But fast-forward to now, and the lone Headphones album is regarded as a crucial corner of David's discography, one that he's now revisiting with a new deluxe 20th anniversary vinyl edition, available in multiple color variants, from both Suicide Squeeze and Undertow. On this episode, David gives us the how's, where's and why's on the entire Headphones experience, two decades removed. Catch Pedro the Lion opening for Grandaddy this fall, as well as live streams of their 30th anniversary performances. Details, tickets and more are at  pedrothelion.com.

The Missing Chapter: History's Forgotten Stories

The history of baseball is the history of our nation… in amongst the innings of America's Pastime, you'll find the story lines that define our country. A timeline of people and events that have carried us through countless decades.   Of all the great names who have ever played the game, there is one that has been almost completely lost to obscurity. A record-holder whose achievements place his name next to the all-time greats of the game – Ruth, Williams, Mantle. And yet, I'd be surprised if you've ever even heard of his name, much less know of the mystery that surrounds his demise. On this episode of the Missing Chapter, we “Take you out to the ball game” and then inside the unknown details of one of baseball's most fascinating, forgotten stories.   So grab yourself some peanuts or crackerjacks and most importantly a freshly brewed cup of coffee and get ready for the first inning of what promises to be a thrilling, who done it, on this… Missing Chapter Podcast. Today's guest makes me wish I had a middle name…or two. But it's OK. He gave me one of his. It's Danny Lee Blackwell of Night Beats. I've wanted to have Danny for quite a while. So I have to thank our mutual friend Paula. Without her, this episode would probably not have happened. Danny and I soon discover that we have another mutual friend, Clyde Mays. And he keeps popping up when you least expect it.  We open the show with a cameo by Sam Cooke's Night Beats album and my dogs, Albert and Hammond. Danny grew up in Texas and talks about his unusual influences like Indian classical music and his brother's influence on his musical taste. He started off playing drums just to get into bands. That led him to playing out by the age of fifteen. But he had serious stage fright. But that anxiety helped reaffirm that this was his calling. Danny left Texas for Seattle because he loved everything about the city. Plus his sister was there. That's where he started Night Beats. Danny talks about being open to magic in the studio and keeping things as raw as possible. He's worked with a lot of great musicians, including Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, which is how I became familiar with him. Danny discusses how they met and how important Rob has been to him and the band. The sound of Night Beats is always evolving and that is evident in the album Rajan, and it is something special. I think part of that is because Danny is not a gearhead, but he's a collector. He's willing to experiment and seek out unusual sounds. Rajan is out on Suicide Squeeze and Fuzz Club Records. Go get it. I'm not asking! And follow Danny @thenightbeats on Instagram & Twitter. Night Beats should be hitting the road soon so keep an eye out for that. Welcome to Mysteries to Die For and this Toe Tag.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is normally a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery, murder, and mayhem. Today is a bonus episode we call a Toe Tag. It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.Today we're continuing our early celebration of the July 10th release of Psycho Therapy, the last in my Diamond Trilogy with this Toe Tag of the second story Suicide Squeeze. The Suicide Squeeze was released from Down & Out Books in 2021 and is available from AMAZON LINK and other book retailers.TG Wolff ReviewWidow's Run is a Mystery. A university chemistry professor went out for lunch and didn't come back. The cops think he's skipped town, but his fiancée knows better. Desperate for answers, the fiancée, Hanna Lang, agrees to a clandestine meeting. The stranger with a reputation gives her a cryptic letter and an address. An hour later, she rings the doorbell.Diamond is a former CIA agent turned widow whose future is sealed. In her darkest hour, the curve fate pitches is a blonde with a situation virtually identical to her own with one exception: Hanna's man might still be alive. Putting her plans on hold, Diamond dives into the mystery, surfacing in a scavenger hunt for a secret known as Poe's Raven. It takes Diamond's flair for the impossible to capture this bird, only to discover what's in her hand has the potential to take terrorism to a chilling new level. And fate isn't done with Diamond, forcing her to put it all on the line or risk setting the caged bird free.Bottom line: Suicide Squeeze is for you if you like fast-paced mysteries, dynamic characters, and story meant to be read just for the fun of it Strengths of the story. To give you an unbiased review, I'm using posted reviews…One from Amazon, “…Like the first book, SUICIDE SQUEEZE is a fast-paced, humorous thrill ride from beginning to end that spans multiple continents. Even better? It brings back all our favorite characters from book one. Loved it, and can't wait to see what new adventures await Diamond in book 3!.” This story carries on with the style from the first book, keying on pacing and characters. It's a solid mystery, but simple, it had to be because everything around it was so complex. Each chapter is it's own story and also moves the overall story along. It made it a blast to write and it what give the pacing it's feel.Where the story fell short of ideal: Well, there aren't any negative reviews. Honestly, there's only one review on Amazon and Goodreads…so that must mean everyone loves it!So take six hours out of your reality to read Suicide Squeeze, the second Diamond Adventure. Review it, help me get up to like 20 reviews. It would mean a lot. Then you'll be ready to finish the series with Psycho Therapy, releasing July 10th. Join us next week for the last episode of Season 6: Detective Connolly Gets Wet N Wild. In the tradition of Inspector Clousseau and Maxwell Smart, Detective Connolly…is something you have to experience for yourself. Hint: It's a Jack story.

Death Valley Girls - What Are the Odds from the 2023 album Islands in the Sky on Suicide Squeeze. Los Angeles-based garage rockers Death Valley Girls are releasing their fifth record Islands in the Sky on February 24th via Suicide Squeeze. The follow-up to 2020's Under the Spell Of Joy was recorded in a cabin in the California woods in early 2022 following a “mysterious illness” that left frontwoman Bonnie Bloomgarden bedridden from November 2020 to March 2021 which inspired much of the record. “When I was sick I had to sleep most of the day,” Bloomgarden details in a press release. “I kept waking up every few hours with an intense message to take care of the island, feed the island…I have no idea why, but making music for the island kept coming up.”  Our Song of the Day is the lead single off the record “What Are the Odds,” a rollicking riff-ripping scorcher that takes its inspiration from an unlikely source: Madonna. “In ‘I'm A Man Too' we were trying to revisit No Doubt's ‘I'm Just A Girl' but through a new lens,” explains Bloomgarden. “‘What Are The Odds' is in the same way an investigation/revisitation of Madonna's ‘Material Girl' but with a DVG spin.” She continues on to say, “We love to think about consciousness and existence, and we very much believe in some type of reincarnation, but also that this experience isn't linear, there isn't a past and future, there's something else going on! What is it? Is it a simulation, are we simulated girls??” The video for the song sees two versions of the band, one where they're black hoodie-clad amongst a dreary LA landscape and the other a technicolor dreamscape of them lounging at a pool with red beehives. Which one is the simulation is anyone's guess, but I'd personally rather live in the latter. Welcome to Mysteries to Die For. I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery, murder, and mayhem. These are arrangements, which means instead of word-for-word readings, you get a performance meant to be heard. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. This is Season 3, Enter the Detective. This season contains adaptations of the first cases for detectives. Some will be characters from book, screen, and stage. Others will be lesser known but with great stories that we hope you give a try.  Episode 6 is about about greed, cleverness, and patience. This is Hewitt & the Lenton Croft Robberies. A lightly edited version of The Lenton Croft Robberies by Arthur Morrison. ** Note: If you listened to the episode before this and thought "hmmm, I thought I just heard #7" you have passed the attention test and are totally sane. I cannot say the same for me, as I mixed up the episodes and recorded them in the wrong order. Oops. I hope you enjoy Martin Hewitt. TG** Partonize our Supports! The ALL ME® Podcast Suicide Squeeze:  Bill Kashatus Did you know that there was a book that was written about Taylor Hooton?  In this podcast we had a chance to interview the author, Bill Kashatus, who wrote “Suicide Squeeze:  Taylor Hooton, Rob Garibaldi, and the Fight against Teenage Steroid Abuse.” During this interview you're going to learn more about why Bill is so passionate about history, teaching, writing and coaching.  He has such an incredible background that his life story which lead to writing a book about Taylor Hooton will keep you captivated.  Taylor's brother, Don Jr., hosts this episode and it was the first time he had been part of a book, which he will share his experience with us about what it was like. Bill is going to take us through what it was like meeting the Hooton and Garibaldi family.  You will hear him talk about why this was the hardest book he's had to write, and he's written a lot of books.  The book is one that all parents and high school students should take a moment to read.  Kashatus does a great job of taking a very complex topic and writing in a way that it's understandable to any audience.  Below you will find some of the links that were mentioned in this podcast if you'd like to learn how to pick up a copy of “Suicide Squeeze”. Publishers Summary: Appearance- and performance-enhancing drugs - specifically, anabolic steroids (APEDs) - provide a tempting competitive advantage for amateur baseball players. But this shortcut can exact a fatal cost on talented athletes. In his urgent book Suicide Squeeze, William Kashatus chronicles the experiences of Taylor Hooton and Rob Garibaldi, two promising high school baseball players who abused APEDs in the hopes of attracting professional scouts and Division I recruiters. However, as a result of their steroid abuse, they ended up taking their own lives. In Suicide Squeeze - named for the high-risk play in baseball to steal home - Kashatus identifies the symptoms and dangers of steroid use among teens. Using archival research and interviews with the Hooton and Garibaldi families, he explores the lives and deaths of these two young men, the impact of their suicides on MLB, and the ongoing fight against adolescent APED use by their parents. A passionate appeal to prevent additional senseless deaths by athletes, Suicide Squeeze is an important contribution to debates on youth and sports and on public policy. The book is published by Temple University Press. Critic Reviews: “A must-read for all parents and for everyone interested in the integrity of sports.” (Rob Manfred, Commissioner of Baseball) “Every young person who reads this book represents a life potentially saved.” (Randy Levine, president, New York Yankees, and board Member, Taylor Hooton Foundation)  “An outstanding book that should be read by anyone who has or will have a connection with young people who play sports. Suicide Squeeze reads like a novel and instructs like a textbook.” (Richard P. Borkowski, Sport and Recreation Safety Consultant) Resource Links: Learn more about William C. The guys open this episode up with some NFL talk. They cover Ja'Marr Chase's screw up, how Cam got scammed by the Pats, and Justin Fields' "Welcome to the NFL" moment. Next, they kick off the Falcons segment by announcing the Josh Rosen signing after AJ McCarron's season ending injury. Then they discuss the second preseason game against the Dolphins and discuss the positives and negatives that they saw. The segment ends with a breakdown of the depth at the WR/TE group. Next up, the guys come out of the gate in the Suicide Squeeze with a discussion of how the lack of a salary cap hurts baseball. Also, they discuss how the Braves broke their winning streak against the Yankees. The Braves change the game by being the first MLB team to sponsor two college athletes for the NIL. Hilariously, they are using these athletes to help promote ticket sales because they're "motivated self starters." For the Basketball segment, the fellas start off with their favorite memories of the late, great Kobe Bryant. Then, they talk about how Nerlens Noel is suing Rich Paul after playing himself looking for a 100 million dollar contract. Lastly, Bleacher Report finally acknowledge has the best young roster in the NBA. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fishngritspod/support
