In this episode, we share the recording from our recent May networking event at Great Lakes Brewing Company. This event featured a discussion about greenspace with three local leaders working on expanding greenspace in our urban core and increasing access and opportunities to experience nature through outdoor recreation, especially for our historically underserved communities. Our three speakers from Cleveland Metroparks, the local nonprofit SYATT, and the Trust for Public Land speak about improving our community and environmental health by creating more access to greenspace and the collaborations that amplify their work. At 2:18 our first speaker is Kaela Geschke, the Ohio Parks for People Program Director for the Trust for Public Land. Kell speaks about some of the projects she is working on in our region to create and protect nature-rich places and the importance of that work to the health of our community. At 14:18, our second speaker is Kelly Coffman, a principal planner with Cleveland Metroparks. Kelly speaks about the strategic planning effort to create greenways connecting our inner city areas with our lake and other parks to increase park access. Kelly also shares the latest details on the CHEERS project, which will transform Cleveland's east side Lake Erie waterfront. At 27:30, our third speaker is Erika Hood, the Co-Founder and Director of Equity and Engagement for SYATT (See You At The Top). This local organization provides opportunities for Black and Brown communities to explore nature and outdoor recreation. Erika shares stories about the ski and scuba outings, camping trips, and other outdoor experiences she organizes for people in Cleveland's black community and how these shared experiences are so impactful. We are so excited that Jordan, personal strength and nutrition coach, agreed to come on our podcast. Founder of Syatt fitness and the Inner circle, Jordan is so knowledgeable about weight loss and maintaining good health. It is an interview that you are going to want to hear maybe more than once. We talk about cuts (tune in to find out what that is), what is important for weight loss, and what is important for maintaining good health. At the end, we do a speed round of questions.
Erika Hood was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and has over fifteen years of experience in community organizing and advocacy. She believes that authentic engagement matters most when working with the community. In 2009 Erika, her sister Ebony and their mother Marcia founded Syatt, formerly known as See You at the Top. Syatt's MISSION is to support its community through culturally relevant programming in the natural and built environment. As a co-founder of SYATT, Erika is able to transform the lives of youth and adults in Cleveland, by curating culturally tailored opportunities for community members to engage in nature and outdoor recreation. In spaces that are historically white, she understands how important Black and Brown representation in nature is and has committed to maintaining a level of expertise in all activities that she encourages her community members to try. Most recently that meant that she and her sister became certified SCUBA divers. As a member of a community that suffers from toxic stress and chronic diseases, green space is an integral component of the physical and mental healing of her community. Erika recalls having supportive parents in her youth who gave her the opportunity to try new things. They exposed her to parks, informative landmarks, and the legacy of cultural contributions found across America. She has passed on this love of travel to her incredibly talented sons, Greg and Duke. Coming at you with a few raging bangers on a Tuesday night, figured I'd bless your daily commute, workout or whenever you happen to click on this garbage. Mowing the yard maybe? Who cares. I was absolutely fired up to finally blast Tony Bennett from 1963, it's only right. I've listened to Joey Diaz and Lee "Boom Boom" Syatt fire that one off plenty of times in the Voodoo Lounge so I had to bring that lovely tune to the fine people on my side of the internet landscape. There is more ammunition on the way if you actually enjoy these. Vinyls of Kids See Ghosts by Kanye and Kid Kudstable, as well as a single from TOOL will be here in a few days barring an unfortunate mistake by the lovely folks down at the United States Postal Service. But again, seeing as how most everything I touch turns into mush, there's a solid chance my records end up half way down the equator belt in Venezuela somewhere. I'm tired now and rambling about stupidity. Thanks for listening and if you read these horrific descriptions.. God blessCo-Assistant ManagerDJ Witwicky

It is very easy to get negative about the world and the people in it. I tend to have a problem with always thinking the worst case scenario is going to happen. Author W. Clement Stone described himself as inverse paranoid. Meaning instead of believing, like me, that the world was out to get him, he thought that the world was out to help him. In the spirit of that I decided to tell you about 2 groups of people and one individual who helped me when they didn't need to and made my life better. I hope you enjoy it. Join us as we meet Betty Reid Soskin, the inspiring National Park Service (NPS) Ranger who began her NPS career at age 85 and is currently the oldest Ranger. Based at Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park (NHP) in Richmond, California, she is a true inspiration with accolades as an author, entrepreneur, musician, activist and civil rights pioneer. She shares stories and experiences from the war where she worked at a segregated union hall but also her role in planning and launching the NHP. We encourage you to read her memoir “Sign My Name to Freedom: A Memoir of a Pioneering Life.” The biggest lesson we took away from meeting Ranger Betty as well as her book was that history is written by the people in the room doing the remembering. She has made it a habit to be in that room but she has taught us that it is important for all of us to be more aware of all strands of our history, not just the physical remnants. In fact, it is most important to seek and learn about the parts of history that are not so apparent. While we love the beauty of the national parks we visit, we are also as impressed by the history we have learned along the way. We saw a quote from Betty Reid Soskin that summed this up so perfectly: “We have created this system of national parks, where it's possible to revisit almost any era in our history...The heroic places, the scenic wonders, the contemplative places, the shameful places, and the painful places. In order to own that history. Own it, process it, that we may begin to forgive ourselves in order to move into a more compassionate future together.” As always, we would love your feedback. Please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or message us on our social media accounts: @ExpeditionNationalParks on Facebook and Instagram and @ExpeditionNPS on Twitter. Thanks to Jason Shaw for the music. And, as always, follow the inspiration of the Junior Ranger motto - keep exploring, learning, and protecting!
