The idea that technology may be able to directly capture and control our thoughts is both fascinating and scary. But this type of technology has been around and is continues to be developed for a variety of applications. In this episode, we speak to Dr. Susan Boehnke about brain computer interfaces and neuromarketing. We dive into the ethical implications of brain-computer interface (BCI) applications—are these technologies enhancing human potential or invading our privacy? We also unpack how the media's portrayal of BCIs often exaggerates their capabilities, contrasting it with their real-world use. Plus, we explore neuromarketing: the fascinating history of how companies use brain data to influence your choices and shape marketing strategies. Don't miss this eye-opening conversation! Susan Boehnke completed a PhD in Neuroscience (2002) at Dalhousie University as a Killam Scholar using psychophysical and neurophysiological approaches to examine spatial processing in the auditory system. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in primate visual and oculomotor neurophysiology with Prof. Doug Munoz at Queen's Univ. In collaboration with Profs. Munoz and De Felice (Brazil), she took a lead role in the creation and validation of one of the first non-human primate (NHP) models of Alzheimer's disease using behavioural, neurophysiological, neuroimaging, and molecular approaches. She led development of the first NHP biobank in Canada, and the establishment of normative values of fluid biomarkers of neurodegeneration in macaques. During COVID, her team used the NHP facility at Queen's to explore the effect of social enrichment and isolation on the brain. In response to recent explosion of interest in neurotechnology, such as brain computer interfaces, she has now turned her attention to creating a micro-credential program in neurotechnology (https://neurotechmicrocreds.com/) and exploring ethical issues related to neurotech. She is also the lead of the Training Committee for Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society, a large Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) program between York and Queen's Universities. This episode is sponsored by the Connected Minds program. Connected Minds, funded by the Canadian First Research Excellence Fund, is a 7-year collaborative program between York University and Queen's University that focuses on interdisciplinary, ethical, and socially responsible research and technology development. Penn Pilot offers showcase aerial photography of Pennsylvania’s landscape from the 1930’s to the 80’s. This tool was started by the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, according to Maurie Kelly, Director of Informatics with the Institutes of Energy and the Environment at Penn State University. “They are part of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and they had thousands and thousands of paper photographs that were in file cabinets, essentially. And they approached Penn State about scanning those and then putting them online for people to access. So now people have limited access to the paper photographs, but now anyone can access the digital photographs, said Kelly. The photos come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service. A lot of the photography was originally done for agricultural reasons, now the data is utilized for planning and development, solving cold cases, and more. According to Maurie, the site is used 15 million times a year. “These people who originally took those photographs in the 30s and 40s had no idea how meaningful and how useful this data was going to be almost 100 years later, “said Kelly. Scott Hoffman, Retired USGS Scientist and Geographer who also worked on imagery to investigate real world problems for USGS- funded problems in Pennsylvania, shares about the equipment used to capture NHP images. “A lot of the cameras used were the best at the time. I'm thinking it's a memory for me, but I think it's a Zeiss camera was one of the best cameras in the world at that time. And they were able to collect really detailed imagery far better than anyone could have imagined. The aircraft varied from high altitude jets to turboprop aircraft, but just using the best of what was available at the time within the budgetary constraints, “said Hoffman. Some of the photos on Penn Pilot came from a project called the National Altitude Photography Project. “That project was really designed to, I think, for lack of a better way, really try to coordinate something nationally and be used in conjunction with what Maury just described with the agricultural program. And just take it maybe a little further, perhaps give a little bit more detail, create a system where the photograph overlaps in a certain percentage, 30%, let's say for each photograph, there's duplication along the flight path. But it was really a nice step to combine with what the agricultural program was doing, “said Hoffman. Towards the end of the interview, Scott shared the impact of Penn Pilot, and the importance of preserving those photographs. “Working with one of the if not the leading mapping agency in the world. But that resource is so, so valuable that it's just so important that we keep it. And as Mari said, you know, funding is everything. And this is a valuable resource that, you know, if there's a legislator that's listening to maybe take a really good look at this and say, hey, look, this is something that we really need to keep going and preserve. “I just think it's so important, “said Hoffman.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week the government finally revealed its new - and mostly delayed - target dates for the building of the promised “new hospitals”. It left many trusts and communities severely disappointed and worried about how they will deliver care from ageing, and sometimes dangerous, estates. We discuss the revised timelines for the NHP, the reaction from trusts and the impact the decisions have had on NHP teams. Also - we pick out a group of hospitals mostly ignored in the national coverage, who all have RAAC concrete risks.

With our Whole NHP (Non-Human Primate) Brain microtomy technique, we maintained a frozen NHP brain as a single piece while coronally sectioning through the entire cerebral hemispheres followed by cerebellum/brain stem. The brain remained frozen on a sliding microtome by utilizing a freezing stage and molds filled with powdered dry ice. As the brain was sectioned at 40um the molds were removed to uncover additional tissue for cutting until the tissue had been entirely sectioned. Serial pictures and an organized series of well plates were used to preserve anatomical order. By sectioning the brain as a whole and maintaining control over anatomical context we achieved results that may enhance the accuracy and thoroughness of histopathological examinations. Furthermore, serial sectioning of the Paraformaldehyde-fixed frozen brain preserved the antigenicity for various immunohistochemical assays. We believe this technique offered certain advantages over the routine paraffin-embedded sectioning method, especially for the biodistribution studies practiced during the developmental stage of gene therapies.

For Episode 49 of the National Health Executive podcast, we were joined by David Hemming, who is service lead for major programmes at NHS Shared Business Services. We spoke to David before our Estates online conference, where he featured on our Building the Hospitals of the Future panel. We asked him about the NHS estate, Hospital 2.0, and the New Hospital Programme (NHP)—right before chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a pause to the NHP so it could undergo a “complete rest”.“Many people are aware of the NHP, [but] there are different levels of understanding of what its actually going to deliver—there is still quite a lot of work to actually get that level of communication and stakeholder engagement out.”He continued: “Part of this is [that] I'm bringing my knowledge of NHP. Do I have a complete and full knowledge of the NHP? I would say ‘no' because it's such a large programme—there are many different elements, but I'm also keen to understand, from other people's perspective, what is their perception of the NHP [and] where do they think there are issues because that helps my understanding.” Knowing this can help NHS SBS modify their service offering.Listen to the full podcast to hear David's thoughts and stay tuned for National Health Executive's next magazine edition for what the NHP pause could mean for the health system.

The heart is the most important muscle in the body. It's the first muscle to show stress or nutritional inadequacy, and hormone imbalances. It's also the first muscle to respond. If the heart is "off" people feel an impending sense of doom, lethargy, hopelessness and decreased vitality. It's not a good feeling. Yes, you can do something about it. It's not just blood pressure meds, or decreasing activity. What if you could unlock genes, proteins, and energy to repair and optimize the heart? If the heart has no horse power as in the case of low blood pressure, people feel terrible. If the heart is overworking (high blood pressure), many times there are no symptoms but it's a risk factor for blowing your hydraulics (stroke). If the heart works too hard for too long, it enlarges and the valves don't work. If there is a deficiency in fat loving B vitamins or B vitamin cofactors then the heart gets out or rhythm (atrial fibrillation). Many times, just getting the B vitamin co-factors into the body and help the heart into normal rhythms. We even touch on aortic stenosis, heart fatigue, and adrenal exhaustion. Also learn about: 1. B vitamins that act like a heart regulator 2. G vitamins (co-factors) that help nerve relaxation (high blood pressure) 3. NHP- natural hormone pre-cursors for heart conditions 4. Oxygen transporters 5. Advanced oxidative medicine strategies If you have any medical questions go to https://www.westcliniconline.com/

After a week off, James and Jon get right back to it to discuss the topic of the day - Nazem Kadri. Rumors and reports are trickling out about Kadri's likelihood to sign with the Islanders, but nothing has been made official. Part of the issue is moving out potential contracts - like Josh Bailey - though more could be at play here. The guys discuss who else could be moved (J.G. Pageau) to not only make room for Kadri, but as part of a hockey trade to bring in a winger like J.T. Miller. All this and more on this week's edition of NHP. Winnie the pooh had officially entered the public domain, which means it's now a free-for-all when it comes to Pooh content. We welcome him to the NHP universe, tell some stories about getting big-timed by small-time artists, the new XXXTENTACION documentary full of his sins and wrongdoings, plan a (completely legal) takeover of our local college radio station and much much more!!

Advanced oxidative medicine strategies

You might think that a whole app for one podcast is a bit unnecessary. Normally, we would agree with you, but this isn't just any podcast... It's ours. So today we proudly present our release of the news that is "we have an app coming soon" called The NHP (pronounced NAP). We go over the features like podcasts, music, your data and much much more!!!
