Today, Susan Niebergall, Chief Executive Unicorn of the Syatt Fitness Inner Circle, joins us on the show!Susan shares her story from gym rat and yo-yo dieter with Jenny Craig in the 80s and 90s to finding a sustainable, fulfilling path in fitness. We discuss the dangerous and wildly unhelpful fallacies of “it's just genetics” or “I just don't have the genetics,” and the phenomenon of “eat more to lose weight.” We chat about the impact of tracking nutritional intake and its importance for weight management, how often we underestimate our daily calorie consumption, and the psychological aspects of self-honesty, and food-related guilt. We talk about the harmful, overly simplistic view of the scale born from years of misinformation, and we discuss “the whoosh” and the major problems with hyping it up and celebrating it. We take a holistic approach to health and body fat, emphasizing the importance of consistency, acknowledging other health markers, and focusing on overall wellbeing rather than solely being driven by what the scale says. And more…"Once you get over the fact that it's not easy and decide you're just gonna try anyway… once you get over that hurdle, you're home free."- Susan Niebergall “It's not bad that you went and overate, that you enjoyed the wedding… it's one of those things you should do. But it gets clouded when there's not an awareness of how often it's happening, and then you're upset with not seeing the results you want to see.”- Susan Niebergall “It's okay to feel emotion. I don't like it when the scale goes up… and it's ok not to like it. Scale down = good Up = bad Emotion is the core of everything Don't let emotion drive the car And then even if you didn't eat that much but just feeling out of control or not going to your perfect plan Or life feels out We make it harder on top of mother nature making it harder We hold onto these beliefs The BS we tell ourselves People don't realise the diet fatigue that comes with it that then leaks into your physical adaptations even more People don't learn how to live a maintenance lifestyle If you cant learn to live that lifestyle That maintenance How are you meant to MAINTAIN the rsults you get You know how to lose weight (until you don't) 1500 calories for a deficit I'm still not losing weight, I'm doing al those Its never to late to decide you want to let go of those shitty beliefs To let go of those People expect results just because now they are doing things the right way but they don't give it the time & then beat themselves up and lose the same effort % Earn your right to be upset with your progress yes, but also Stop putting that timeline on yourself There is no rush because theres so much you can gain from just building the lifestyle and foundation because then putting a deficit on is easier People are afraid to ask for help (inner circle) If you cant be consistent at higher calories, how can you be consistent at lower ones Susans youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzMgJLbITYjJnd3Q6buGGmw/videos Susans IG @ susanniebergallfitness Rubys IG @transformxruby Susans book: Fit at any age – it's never too late

Susan is in her 60's and is in the best shape of her life. We also went into being successful in weight loss transformation—it was an amazing episode. There is so much you can take away from this episode with everything Susan and I got into, which is exactly what Dieting from the Inside Out is all about. We don't just look at the outer work, we need to look inward. As James Allen famously wrote, "You cannot travel within and stand still without." I know you'll enjoy and get a lot out of today's episode. We get into the specifics of how to begin an effective strength training practice - even without access to a personal trainer or a gym. Have you ever said to yourself "I'm too old for that"? or maybe you have convinced yourself that you've left it too late to start at all? Well today I speak to strength coach, cos coach in the inner circle with Jordan Syatt and Author Susan Niebergall about how that is not the case Like many women Susan yo-yo dieted her whole life and it was only in her 50's that she finally got to where she wanted to be with both training and nutrition Now at 61 she has become a coach, after previously working as a school counciller and also written her own book on the subject "Fit at any age, it's never too late" Today we talk about her own journey, how she finally ditched the yo-yoing for stregnth training and the difference it made to her body The importance of strength training especially as you age How an injury doesn't mean you stop alltogether, you just need to train smarter (Susan still trains even tho she has a bone spur and arthritus in her hip) How rest days are just as important as working days And that not every training day will be amazing and thats ok too This was a really interesting conversation and it was great to speak to someone who has so much experience on both sides when it comes to fitness so do not think the things she has to say will be applicable to you as the advice fits all ages. Susan Niebergall (@susanniebergallfitness) is a coach, author, podcaster, and an incredibly kind and intelligent human being. Susan has a book titled Fit At Any Age, her podcast is called Strong and Lean at Any Age and along with Jordan Syatt, she coaches their Inner Circle members to get in the best shape of their life.We spoke about why anyone at any age or stage of life should continue to exercise and pursue fitness goals. This also goes hand in hand with wanting to improve all other aspects of your life. It doesn't serve anyone to simply stop growing. Many of our gym environments have changed over the course of the past two years and Susan's is no different. Her primary gym is closing and now she's navigating finding a new gym “home”. So we spoke about how to go about this in order to get comfortable in the new space and with the new people. It's also important to note that as “fitness people” we still experience the same discomforts with new gym environments.Susan is a huge proponent of performance based goals. Meaning, instead of chasing “fat loss” in the gym, you should be chasing an actual gym goal – like Susan's current goal of being able to row the 100lb dumbbell. Performance goals put everything in a positive frame of mind and allow you to actually pursue something, rather than focusing on something negative – “losing” fat – which is better accomplished by your outside-of-the-gym behaviour anyways. This was a wildly enjoyable conversation for me and one of my favourite conversations on the podcast to date, and I'm sure there will be many great lessons you can take from this episode.Once again, you can connect with Susan on IG, on her website, read her book, listen to her podcast, and learn more about the Inner Circle. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes. It really helps to spread the message and ultimately help more people. In this episode, I'm joined by my friend and admirable weight loss coach, Susan Niebergall, who, at 61 years young, sets the bar for what "healthy at any age" can look like, as she helps frustrated dieters get the most out of their life, regardless of their age.Susan shared some of the key lessons from her personal transformation in the last 7 years, starting at 54 years of age. Some of the key ideas and lessons she shared were:- How everything changed when she stopped trying to "check all the boxes"- Why menopause is NOT an excuse- The "Fat Loss Car" analogy- 4 key qualities of people who keep weight off forever- Why removing deadlines on your health goals will guarantee you success- Age and health goals (Hint: It's never too late to start)- The difference between "working out" and "training"Not only is Susan an inspiration for her age, but she's also a wealth of knowledge for anyone of any age to overcome the limits they place on themselves. Her "tough love" approach is a lot like mine, which made this such a great discussion! If you love what she shared, check her out on IG (@susanniebergallfitness), and I cannot recommend enough that you check out her book on Amazon, "Fit At Any Age, It's Never Too Late".Enjoyed listening to this episode? On today's episode, I had the pleasure of welcoming Susan Niebergall onto the show! Susan is an incredible woman that wears many hats: trainer, co-coach with Jordan Syatt in the Inner Circle, author, former school counselor, and many more! (*What sets the successful apart from those who are not yet successful*) - The importance of finding a way to workout that you love! - Why group fitness classes aren't enough... at least for long-term - How to get started in the gym, even if you are brand new to all of this - How to deal with binge eating - Plus, much more!
