Karun is in conversation with Harry Sherrard. Karun Chandhok was born into a motor racing family where his father, grandfather and even grandmother used to race! After winning Indian and Asian championships, Karun moved to England where he was a front-runner in Formula 3, which served as a launch pad up to GP2 and then Formula 1. Karun was a test driver for the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team in 2007 and 2008, before racing in Formula 1 for Hispania Racing and Team Lotus in 2010 and 2011. He went on to compete at Le Mans and in the Formula E series. Since 2016, Karun has been a regular driver and consultant for the Williams Formula 1 team's Heritage business, showcasing their World Championship winning Formula 1 cars. He is also a Goodwood Revival regular, winning the Whitsun Trophy in the CanAM McLaren M1A in 2019. Best known today as commentator and technical analysist of the Sky Sports F1 team, Karun also sits on the Board of Motorsport UK. We are delighted that Karun made time in his busy schedule to come to talk to us at Brooklands.

With F1's August shutdown well under way, there's still lots to talk about in the world of tech for host Edd Straw and Gary Anderson, former Jordan, Jaguar and Stewart technical director, to talk about. Gary starts off with a look at the follies of Ferrari's attitude to strategy during the 2022 season and why it is not about sacking team principal Mattia Binotto if Ferrari wants to fix things. Then it's onto a deep dive into F1 ground effect cars, starting off with the 1970s. Then, Gary was in the thick of the ground effect revolution that was kicked off by Team Lotus. That then spawned the fascinating Brabham BT46 ‘fan car' that raced only once. But what might have happened had such fan cars stayed legal? Modern-day ground effect is also delved into, including the potential for teams to unlock significantly more performance in the future despite the rule changes slated for 2023. And finally, Gary answers a listener question about whether any of F1's midfield teams can hope to join the ‘big three' teams at the front before the next rules cycle starts in 2026. Ricardo Teixeira (born 2 August 1984 in Lisbon, Portugal) is a racing driver who is half-Angolan and half-Portuguese. He is a dual national and has competed in races under both of his national flags at different stages during his career. When he was named as a test driver for Team Lotus in 2011, he became the first Angolan driver to drive a Formula 1 vehicle. He has been sponsored by the Angolan oil corporation Sonangol for the whole of his professional life.

This week It's sixty years since one of the greatest grand prix teams took its first victory when Team Lotus won the 1961 United States Grand Prix with Innes Ireland driving the Lotus 21. It was the first win for Team Lotus as a works outfit although privateer cars had won races previously. What better excuse to talk about one of the great grand prix teams and we're delighted to be joined by Clive Chapman today. Clive is the son of Lotus founder Colin Chapman and Managing Director of Classic Team Lotus. Clive joins us from their Norfolk HQ where many of their iconic grand prix cars are kept running. Lotus fue la única escudería que plantó cara a Ferrari casi desde el comienzo del Mundial de Fórmula 1. Surgió gracias al genio de Colin Chapman y fabricó coches deportivos distintos a todos. El prestigio de su estudio de ingeniería todavía perdura pero tras la muerte de su fundador tuvo una azarosa vida que acabó con su venta a una empresa China… una historia apasionante y poco conocida... Por ejemplo, ¿Sabéis qué tiene que ver Lotus con el Corvette y con el Peugeot 205 Turbo 16? ¿Y que fue accionista de DeLorean? Lotus ha sido una marca que ha influido de manera notable en la evolución de la Fórmula 1 y de los coches de calle, gracias a las ideas de Chapman y al éxito de su casi desconocido estudio de ingeniería, Lotus Enginering, para otros fabricantes. Me atrevería a decir que la influencia de Lotus en la competición y en los coches de calle ha sido mayor que la de Lamborghini, Ferrari o Porsche… aunque en el caso de Porsche también es importante su aportación como empresa de asesoría técnica. Comencemos con la Fórmula 1. Así de memoria, Lotus introdujo en la F1 el chasis monocasco, en 1962 con su Lotus 25 y todavía hoy se sigue usando; fue el primero en poner alerones a un F1, en su Lotus 49 en 1968… todos los F1 desde entonces usan alerones; fue quien “inventó” el efecto suelo, en un coche que se ha elegido como el más influyente de la historia F1, el Lotus 78 de 1977… hoy en día todos los F1, todos los coches de competición y muchos coches de calle recurren a esta solución. En cuanto a coches de calle hay una diferencia importante entre Lotus y las marcas citadas: Ferrari, Lamborghini o Porsche eran fabricantes de motores no solo de coches y Lotus por lo general, no. Conseguir motores potentes, fiables y asequibles no era fácil y por eso, desde el principio, Chapman tuvo clara una cosa: Es mejor menos peso que más potencia. En Lotus eran expertos en el chasis, las suspensiones y la aerodinámica, aspectos en los que Lotus siempre fue puntera. Muchas marcas recurrían a Lotus para poner a puntos sus conjuntos de chasis y suspensiones… entre ellas General Motors. Y a GM le gustó tanto el trabajo de Lotus que en 1986, tras la muerte de Chapman, acabó por comprar la empresa. ¿Por qué no es muy conocida esta faceta de Lotus? Es muy sencillo, porque sus clientes, que eran muchas marcas muy reconocidas, hacían firmar a Lotus Enginering un contrato de confidencialidad con condiciones leoninas… algo normal en estos caos. Lotus Enginering Limited, que luego daría lugar a Lotus Cars y al Team Lotus, nace en 1952 fundada por Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman. Ya antes de fundar la marca Chapman había fabricado coches, el primero el Mark-I que era en realidad un Austin Seven muy mejorado. Este modelo fue evolucionando en los Mark II y sucesivos hasta llegar al Mark Seven en 1957. Este modelo y el posterior Súper Seven es considerado por muchos el paradigma del Lotus deportivo, ligero, sencillo, ágil, con un afinado chasis y unas elaboradas suspensiones. Un coche que fue fabricado por Lotus hasta 1975 y por Caterham… hasta al día de hoy. El Super Seven era prácticamente un coche de competición matriculable y el gran salto llega con otro coche muy longevo, un coche que apareció en 1976 y que se mantuvo en producción hasta 2004 y un coche precioso: El Esprit. Chapman encargó el diseño a Italdesign ¿Cómo no iba a ser bonito un coche diseñado por Giugiaro? Pero era mucho más refinado y mucho más bonito. Pesaba menos de 900 kg e inicialmente contaba con un motor propio de 4 cilindros, 2 litros y 140 CV aunque la versión turbo llegó a ofrecer hasta 284 CV. Y apareció en la película de la saga de James Bond “La espía que me amo”, en la que incluso se convertía en un submarino. Y llega otra zona oscura de la historia de Lotus y Chapman, cuando John DeLorean intenta comprar Lotus. No lo consigue, pero sí consigue que Chapman se implique en el proyecto e incluso que invirtiese 18 millones de libras, un verdadero dineral para la época. Todos sabemos cómo acabó el proyecto: Mal. Pero Chapman fallece en 1982. Quizás eso le salvo de la cárcel por el caso DeLorean pero fue un duro golpe para la marca. Chapman era genial para la mecánica, pero no tanto para los números y la gestión empresarial. Y entra en escena General Motors. En 1986 compran Lotus pero en 1993 GM vende Lotus al Grupo ACBN del italiano Romano Artoli, suponemos que después de fichar a varios ingenieros para su marca. En esa época nace el Elise, un nombre con E al principio, como manda la tradición Lotus y en honor a la nieta del señor Artoli. Pero ahí empieza la crisis de Lotus: Artoli vende la marca a Proton, una empresa malaya y esta a la empresa china Geely, su actual propietaria. Coche del día. It was 35 years ago today, on Sunday 21 April and the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix. Behind the wheel of a Lotus 97T was Ayrton Senna, just turned 25 years old. With the car at the absolute limit of its grip, he delivered a masterclass in wet-weather driving for the hardy Estoril crowd and powered to the chequered flag. Such was his dominance he lapped the entire field up to second place, finishing over a minute ahead of his nearest competitor. Today, we catch up with Senna's Team Lotus mechanic, Chris Dinnage. Chris shares his memories of the racing legend both on and off the track and explains in detail how the driver was quick to impress.
