#234: Leading an Ethical School with Dr. Nason Lollar Description:Today's guest has developed a framework and language around professional conduct, which he defines as “my contribution to our culture of learning.” Cool. And what else is cool, is that you will hear, in slightly different terms, some of my core talking points around supporting and growing teachers, being present and listening, and, of course, working in quadrant 2 by managing your priorities, not your time. Guest Bio:Having served twenty-four years in the field of education, Dr. Nason Lollar has leveraged those experiences into his first book, The Five Principles of Educator Professionalism. Nash McKenzie is a 2023 National Proficiency Winner in the category of Diversified Horticulture.  This all started with shooting sporting clays if you can believe that.  Nash did not grow up farming or with an agricultural background, but he did grow up participating in shooting clay competitions through the 4H.  As he got to high school he discovered that he could continue this through the FFA, and he joined. While Nash was able to continue shooting clays, he had other responsibilities in the FFA, including developing an SAE.  During his 9th Grade year he had started to mow a few lawns in an effort towards satisfying this requirement.  And when Covid shut everything else down the following year, he had the time and the inclination to really dive in to the business. That is when "Home Exterior Services" was born and it took off. Today, Nash is just getting ready to wrap up his Associate's Degree in business.  He has expanded her services in the business from just lawns to all forms of landscaping, pressure washing and for the second year - Christmas Light hanging.

Kevin Cartwright had a very nontraditional path to becoming a welding instructor. The longtime Detroit-based multi media artist, working under the name Nivek Monet, spent years painting before turning his attention to metal sculpture art. That led him to working in various metal fabrication shops to learn how to weld. Eventually, he became the lead welding instructor at Randolph Career and Technical Center, a Detroit high school focused on teaching skilled trades. In this episode of The Fabricator Podcast, Cartwright joins host Dan Davis and guest host Darla Welton to talk about his journey from artist to welder to teacher, his time working in metal fabrication shops, his artist moniker Nivek Monet, his philosophy when it comes to skilled trades education, his involvement with Skills USA, being featured in a Carhartt commercial, and creating abstract sculptures out of scrap metal. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Monday, May 1  WV kicks off a new tourism initiative designed to bring jobs, jobs and more jobs to the industry--YesWV!...Lost your marbles? You can find them at this Paden City producer. And the WVDNR urges residents to be “bear aware”--help keep black bears out of residential areas, for your safety and theirs…on today's daily304.   #1 – From WV GOVERNOR –  Gov. Jim Justice kicked off a new tourism initiative recently at Nicholas County Career and Technical Center. The event marked the beginning of hospitality and tourism education programs statewide, developed as a part of a new workforce development initiative, Tourism Works. This program was launched by the Department of Tourism earlier this year to prepare for the projected growth of more than 21,000 annual job openings in the state's tourism industry through 2025. Of the projected job openings, 10,000 are expected to be management-level positions with salaries approaching $60,000, according to data from the Higher Education Policy Commission. The education component of this federally funded program focuses on educating the state's next generation in tourism-related fields, preparing for the substantial increase in job openings projected for the industry, and connecting students with viable career opportunities.  Learn more at WVtourism.com/TourismWorks. Read more: https://governor.wv.gov/News/Pages/Gov.-Justice-celebrates-hospitality-and-tourism-education-programs-launching-in-all-55-counties.aspx  #2 – From WV EXPLORER –  Able to produce upwards of one million marbles a day, Marble King Inc. has been a staple of West Virginia industry and manufacturing since it was formed in 1949 and remains the only domestic marble manufacturer in the nation. With 28 full-time employees, it meets the needs of a broad range of client bases—from the toy and game industry to more industrial applications, such as in aerosol cans and air- and water-purification systems. Produced in various sizes, the marbles can also be found in decorative vases, lighting fixtures, and architectural designs and projects across the U.S. The company sources most of its materials from recycled glass, including scrap glass from Milton's Blenko Glass Company and Paden City's Paul Wissmach Glass Company. “The majority of our supplies do come from West Virginia, are sourced here locally; not only are they sourced here, but they're also protecting the environment here, because otherwise this would go into a landfill, and typically glass is 100% recyclable,” President and CEO Beri Fox said. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2023/04/26/marble-king-wv-only-marble-manufacturer-in-us/   #3 – From MY BUCKHANNON –  May and June are peak activity months for black bears and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources reminds residents to remove bear attractants from their yards. To avoid potential conflicts with bears, residents should remove bird feeders, pet food and food scraps from their yards and secure trash and other bear attractants on their property. The same preventative steps should be taken while camping. “Deliberately feeding a black bear is illegal in West Virginia, but unintentionally feeding a bear also causes serious problems for humans, their property and our state animal,” said Colin Carpenter, black bear project leader for the WVDNR. “Once a bear gets used to getting food from humans, they can become a danger and often must be humanely killed.” To learn more about black bears and how to prevent human-bear conflicts, visit bearwise.org. The West Virginia Department of Tourism has teamed up with students at Nicholas County Career and Technical Center to build the super-sized wooden swing sets for visitors to stage their vacation photos. Titled 1863nft, the project consists of 304 individual digital assets representing 50 pieces of original art. The project aims to rally a community of West Virginia & web3 enthusiasts to celebrate the positive virtues of the state through a boutique collection of digital art depicting iconic people, places, and things associated with the Mountain State.  While blockchain technology is still quite new, several of the artists involved with 1863ft have actively worked in the space, including Jamie Lester, creator of Bird Girl NFT.   “I'm always excited about emerging mediums of artistic expression,” said the award-winning Morgantown-based artist. “The opportunity to join a group of fellow West Virginia artists to celebrate all that's great about this state was a no-brainer.”   For more information, visit www.1863nft.com or follow the project on Twitter and Instagram @1863nft. Read more: https://wvbusinesslink.com/2023/04/11/1863nft-leads-the-mountain-state-into-the-web3-revolution/   #3 – From GREEN BANK OBSERVATORY – A site planted with giant radio telescopes listening in on alien conversations (maybe) is an obvious place to do landscape astrophotography, but it's not that easy. The site sits in a “Quiet Zone.” Specifically, it's located in the National Radio Quiet Zone consisting of 13,000 square miles of limited radio and cell signal. This not only limits the use of cell phones and microwave ovens in certain areas near the site but also all electronics, such as cameras. Astrophotography requires a lot of gear, and the camera is pretty high on the list. Photographer Dave Green gave it a shot--literally and figuratively--and came away with some amazing photos. “I do my best to create an image that represents a reality that we just can't see with our eyes. I've always done that with my photography, and the photos of Green Bank were no exception,” Green said. “I didn't realize how important that was until NASA reached out to me. They told me that my photo of Orion over Green Bank was being considered for an APOD (Astronomy Picture of the Day).” View the amazing images on Green Bank Observatory's website.
