Seattle has a rich jazz history -- and you can't talk about it without mentioning legends like Ray Charles and Quincy Jones. Both artists knew each other, as they grew their music chops right here in Seattle. Of course, we can't forget to mention Kenny G. In the 1920s and 1930s jazz clubs were an escape during prohibition, and many of them lasted long after prohibition ended. For almost 45 years, Dimitriou's Jazz Alley has not only been one of the preeminent jazz clubs in Seattle, but also in the country. Whether you're someone who likes to go out to the club or not, you've probably heard of Seattle's Jazz Alley. Tucked away down a literal alley, the all ages jazz club has showcased performances by jazz greats like Tower of Power, and American Blues Musician Taj Mahal, who will be returning for his annual Thanksgiving residency. Soundside host Diana Opong caught up with Ari Dimitriou and his father, John Dimitriou – who is still running the club at 75 years old. They discussed the origins of Jazz Alley and the future of the iconic family business. Plus... while Jazz Alley is undoubtedly the face of the genre in Seattle, it isn't the only establishment looking to keep jazz alive. Seattle has a wealth of new talent – local high schools like Bothell, Garfield, and Roosevelt are regular finalists in national competitions. But the journey from a local school band to a big stage like Jazz Alley is long and difficult. One local organization – the Seattle Jazz Fellowship – is looking to change that. Soundside producer Alec Cowan visited a jam session to hear about the importance of local bandstands for musicians and jazz-enjoyers alike. Guests: John and Ari Dimitriou, who founded and operate Jazz Alley in Seattle. Thomas Marriott, jazz trumpeter and founder of the Seattle Jazz Fellowship, a nonprofit supporting mentorship and playing opportunities for local jazz musicians. Roman Goron, local jazz pianist. The cover story on guitarist Julian Lage in the July issue of DownBeat reminded us of a duo with Julian Lage and saxophonist Ben Roseth playing at Egan's in Ballard in 2008. Jazz musicians are famous for taking unconventional approaches to familiar music and the holiday season is no exception. One of our Northwest favorites is an organ group from British Columbia that's been playing together for more than 15 years. The cartoon cover of their third Christmas CD gives a good impression of the quartet's spirited approach to seasonal music. Also on this week's show are Greta Matassa, Thomas Marriott, Barney McClure and others, including a sampling of the "Jazz Nutcracker" played by the Roosevelt Jazz Band directed by Scott Brown. Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by host Jim Wilke and airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Listeners may also subscribe to the podcast at KNKX, NPR, Apple, or Google.
We feature tracks by Scenes featuring John Stowell, Jihee Heo, Benjamin Boone, Thomas Marriott, Greta Matassa and more!
Jazz from Vancouver BC and Spokane as well as Seattle is on this week’s Jazz Northwest. Vancouver is represented by trumpet player-composer Brad Turner whose quartet is joined by New York-based tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake, who grew up in Vancouver. From Spokane comes The Whitworth Jazz Ensemble directed by Dan Keberle, playing music by the multi-award-winning composer-arranger Maria Schneider. Seattle groups on this week’s show feature Jay Thomas, Thomas Marriott, Kelley Johnson, Bill Anschell and Wayne Horvitz, who is celebrating his 65th birthday this weekend with performances at The Royal Room. Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by host Jim Wilke and airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Listeners may also subscribe to the podcast at KNKX, NPR, Apple , or Google .
The justly celebrated composer and arranger Johnny Mandel died June 29 at the age of 94 in Oaji CA. He received multiple Grammy awards and Oscars for his songs and music for films and was a member of the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. Mandel made one appearance at Centrum's Jazz Port Townsend in 2012, when he was the featured composer-arranger and conducted the Centrum All-Star Big Band in a concert of his music. This brought his career full-circle, he began his career as a big band arranger in the 40s and 50s. In this encore presentation, four of Johnny Mandel's award-winning songs from this concert will be highlighted this week on Jazz Northwest. Included will be "Close Enough for Love," "Emily," "Theme from MASH" and "The Shadow Of Your Smile." Also featured on this week's show is a new release by Vancouver tenor saxophonist Jerry Cook, as well as music by Porlanders Warren Rand and Randy Porter, and selections by Francesco Crosara, Xavier Lecouturier and Thomas Marriott. Jazz Northwest
A memorable evening at the Ballard Jazz Walk in 2009 brought tenor saxophonists Pete Christlieb and Hadley Caliman together again to cap a week that also saw them make their first, and only, album together. The two veteran saxophonists first played together as young men at Marty's in L.A. and there was an obvious mutual admiration society when you saw and heard them together. Another historical note on this week's Jazz Northwest is the great singer Joe Williams performing in a live radio broadcast from The Penthouse in Seattle in 1965. Also on this week's show are singers Nancy King and Johnaye Kendrick plus recent releases from Thomas Marriott and Steve Treseler and more. Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by host Jim Wilke and airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Listeners may also subscribe to the podcast at KNKX, NPR, Apple , or Google .

KNKX and Dimitriou's Jazz Alley are teaming up to present a monthly series featuring top Northwest regional artists on the last Monday of each month. February's event featured the Marc Seales Quintet playing a program of mostly original music by Marc. The concert was recorded for radio, and the first part will air today on Jazz Northwest. Playing for an enthusiastic full house at Jazz Alley, the group includes Marc Seales, piano and keyboards, Jesse Seales, guitar, Thomas Marriott, trumpet, Chuck Deardorf, basses and Moyes Lucas, drums. Pianist and composer Marc Seales has backed many touring artists in addition to fronting his own groups. He has been a highly significant and prominent pianist who first attracted attention as pianist with the late saxophonist Don Lanphere as well as in the Ellington Sacred Music concerts with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra. Today, he is a Professor of Music at The University of Washington and has made several albums that have been very well
