There's a not so polite saying about teaching music and music teachers that goes like this: If you can, play. If you can't, teach. That is what jazz legend Ellis Marsalis once said to a Detroit drummer who was considering becoming a music teacher. I'm talking about drummer, educator, producer and band leader Clarence Penn. Fortunately, Clarence did not take it to heart, eventually acquiring a master's in music education from Rutgers University. It was also to the benefit of future musicians who became Clarence's students. In this episode, Clarence Penn and I engage in deep reflection on jazz and jazz music instruction. He started playing music with the drum set influenced by his drummer neighbor Ricky Hudson around eight years old. In 1986, while still in high school, he attended the Interlochen Arts Academy where Clarence focused on classical percussion aiming to be a timpanist, but later eventually committed to jazz in high school after meeting NEA Jazz Master, trumpeter, and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Music Director, Wynton Marsalis. He started studying at the University of Miami in Florida in 1986 but transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University which is when he began working with the great Ellis Marsalis. The conversation navigates his brief stint with trumpet, his preference for jazz over classical due to its broader voice and creativity and reflects on the evolving definition of jazz. The discussion also delves into his teaching philosophy, emphasizing individualized attention, deliberate practice, and the importance of being a well-rounded person. What Ellis Marsalis said about teaching, he later retracted when Clarence told him he was pursuing a master's at Rutgers in music education. He said, according to Clarence, “…that those who can play, teach,” thus giving Clarence his blessing. Clarence Penn also talks about various influences and collaborations, his views on the business of being a musician, and his expressive performance style. He mentions his project with the 2025 Grammy nominated American Patchwork Quartet, its diverse cultural influences, and explains his latest album 'Behind the Voice', which pays homage to drummers who have significantly impacted music. His resume more so lays out his career as a jazz musician than a teacher of percussion instruments, performing with Ellis and Wynton Marsalis, Maria Schneider, Stanley Clark, Betty Carter, Christian Sands, Lakecia Benjamin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Kurt Elling, among many other highly accomplished musicians. He concludes by discussing the importance of teaching as therapy and the rewarding relationships with students. In this episode, we'll listen to three tracks of music, thanks to Origin Records. Two will come from Clarence Penn's latest project, Behind the Voice, released in 2024, more so a R&B/soul sound that has enormously brilliant drumming and keyboards by Clarence. The third track comes from his 2014 recording, Monk: The Lost Files, a highly acclaimed release that revisits some of the most memorable compositions by jazz legend Thelonious Monk. You will hear the first song just prior to the conversation opening. 1. “Send One Your Love” (Steve Wonder)-Behind the Voice-3:15; Clarence Penn-drums, percussion, keyboards, vocoder; Aaron Marcellus-vocals; The second track will play at about 31 minutes into the program. 2. “Hackensack”: Monk: The Lost Files; Chad Lefkowitz-Brown - Saxes; Donald Vega-Piano; Yasushi Nakamura - Acoustic & Electric Bass; Clarence Penn - Drums, producer-arranger. The third song will close the conversation. 3. “You Are” (Clarence Penn, Tyrone Corbett), Behind the Voice -3:52; Clarence Penn—drums, percussion, keyboards, vocoder; Chelsea Jackson-vocals; Yasushi Nakamura-bass Thank you for listening. I know there are many podcasts for you to enjoy so it means a great deal to me that you are spending time with this conversation.
Trumpeter, flugelhorn player, composer, educator, and recording artist Jun Iida (Joon Ee-da) has quickly established himself as a highly sought after musician. A recording and performing artist, Iida has appeared extensively throughout the U.S. at notable jazz clubs, theaters, and festivals with his sextet and as a sideman. This gifted musician born in St Louis of Japanese parents, has lived literally coast-to-coast - from his hometown, to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Seattle, and most recently relocating to New York City. All these moves afforded him the opportunity to experience and internalize the different styles of music from each region, making his approach to composing and arranging appealing and unexpected with his subtle amalgamation of contemporary jazz, blues, pop, hip-hop, soul, and classical music. Jun's debut CD, EVERGREEN, is a showcase for his modern, edgy originals, along with imaginative re-workings of other compositions. In our conversation, we talk with Jun about his life, influences, incredibly diverse background, as well as about the backstory of EVERGREEN, which released January 19, 2024 on Origin Records.

©️ 2022 Origin Records Compositions by Gregg Hill except track 8 composed by Rodney Whitaker Rodney Whitaker - bass Terell Stafford - trumpet & flugelhorn Tim Warfield - tenor & soprano sax Bruce Barth - piano Dana Hall - drums Rockelle Fortin - vocals 1,4,10,11 Recorded on October 29-30, 2021 at Solid Sound Recording Co., Ann Arbor, Michigan #bebop --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message

El flugelhornista estadounidense Dmitri Matheny nos visita esta semana con su trabajo #12 como líder, Cascadia, una producción 2022 para Origin Records. Easy listening Jazz.
Flugelhornist/ composer/educator, Dmitri Matheny, has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” by the International Review of Music, and “one of the Jazz world's most talented horn players” by the San Francisco Chronicle. With a discography that lists over 120 albums on which he appears as a composer, arranger, producer, annotator or flugelhorn soloist, and 11 critically-acclaimed albums as a leader, Dmitri's new album, CASCADIA - released on Origin Records- shows yet another side, showcasing timeless classics and original jazz from the Pacific Northwest. Dmitri's backstory is woven from the threads that led him from his father's collection of jazz and classical LP records to piano lessons at age 5, the trumpet at 9, then the flugelhorn at 18. It took Dmitri from his birthplace of Nashville to Georgia, Arizona, Interlochen in Michigan, Berklee in Boston, then to New York, to touring worldwide, and on to his current home in Washington state. His experiences have created an expansive tapestry in his music that shine brightly throughout our conversation.
Multi-GRAMMY nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon released her first album in more than a decade on May 11. With its classic standards, jazz-infused re-imaginings of '70s soul hits and original compositions, Time Traveler compiles an intimate expression of love for her late husband, preeminent architect Philip Freelon, who passed away from ALS in 2019, and a universal love letter to all those who've lost someone dear. Freelon believes that music has a time-traveling quality. This allows us to expand on the central theme of our podcast. In our conversation, we also discuss the themes of grief and loss that are at the heart of her new record. "Singing from the heart of grief gave my voice a new shape and allowed a kind of freedom. I found unexpected gifts of hope and joy in the palms of sorrow," says Freelon. Listen to our podcast conversation with Nnenna Freelon via the player below. Praised for the “breathtaking singing quality of his sound” by jazz icon John McNeil and as a “musician of the highest order” by renowned orchestral trumpeter Charles Daval, Ryan Nielsen’s lyricism and versatility are rare. His artistry grows out of a love of groove, spirit, and beautiful melody. He began performing professionally at 17, and has since been a guest artist at concerts and festivals throughout the United States. Nielsen’s debut album, Gift of Breath (a joint project with his mentor, Ra Kalam Bob Moses) was selected by the New York City Jazz Record as a 2017 Recommended New Release. Ra Kalam, whose previous work was selected by the Smithsonian as a landmark in jazz history, called Gift of Breath, “One of the deepest, most soulful and creative recordings I've ever done.” In 2016, Nielsen was named trumpeter in the Kobie Watkins Grouptet. Perhaps best known for his extensive work with jazz legend, Sonny Rollins, Watkins formed his Grouptet from across the country. Their first album, Movement, was released on Origin Records to international critical acclaim. The Chicago Tribune named it one of the ten best albums of 2018, alongside artists like Joe Lovano, Stefon Harris, Don Byron, and Dave Douglas. As a graduate student at Arizona State University, Nielsen studied with David Hickman and Mike Kocour, and received of the Doc Severinsen award for outstanding classical and jazz trumpet. He went on to pursue doctoral studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied with John McNeil, Ra Kalam Bob Moses, and Tom Rolfs. Nielsen loves teaching students of all ages, and has a reputation as a passionate and inspiring teacher. He is currently Associate Professor of Trumpet at Utah Valley University.

VJC Q&T podcast host Russell Schmidt has known pianist/organist/composer Michael Kocour for more than a dozen years. A nationally-renown educator, Mike is the Director of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University. Additionally, he is a recording artist for Origin Records, releasing a solo piano album, East of the Sun, on that label’s OA2 imprint earlier this year. In early summer, Mike sat down with Russ to partake in spirited, engaging discussions on jazz, music education, and the nature of creativity. In this second of two podcasts together, they discussed the sometimes-random nature in discovering one’s passions and influences, the deeper truths revealed on vinyl records, and even the lengthy path to be travelled just to join a school’s “stage band”. VJC Q&T podcast host Russell Schmidt (Director, Valley Jazz Cooperative) has known pianist/organist/composer Michael Kocour for more than a dozen years. A nationally-renown educator, Mike is the Director of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University. Additionally, he is a recording artist for Origin Records, releasing a solo piano album, East of the Sun, on that label’s OA2 imprint earlier this year. In early summer, Mike sat down with Russ to record a Q&T podcast. Their far-ranging discussion was engaging and abundant, so much so that the conversation has been split into two separate podcasts, the second of which will be made available later. But in this, the first of two podcasts together, Mike and Russ addressed the potential dangers a sabbatical can bring, talked about an unlikely mentor for the study of Brazilian music, and even found a point at which Oscar Peterson and Johnny Costa intersect. http://www.behindthenote.com/category/podcast/ If you have ever recorded an album independently or desire to do so then this episode is for you. We talk about the pros and cons of signing with an independent record label. Also, we discuss how to choose the company that is a good match for you. We also talk about if it is a better idea to just do things without a label. Today's guest is Chad McCullough who is a former employee of Origin Records. Chicago-based Trumpeter/composer Chad McCullough… called “a thoughtful improvisor with technique to spare” by Allaboutjazz.com, Chad’s various albums have received wide critical-acclaim. His stable of collaborators is a diverse collection of unique musicians and speaks to the depth of his musical palette. Dan McClenaghan writes, “He is a rare instrumentalist who makes each note sound as if it were imbued with a deeper meaning. Certainly a player with great chops, his approach is one that is measured and deliberate, often introspective, sometimes gorgeously melancholic, and one that employs a continuity of mood and atmosphere that the best recordings have.” As a leader, he has performed with his bands at festivals throughout the globe, including the 2013 Festival of New Trumpet Music (New York), the GG Jazz Festival (Krasnodar, Russia), The Earshot Jazz Festival (Seattle), and The Appeltuin Jazz Festival (Belgium). His albums have been released on Seattle’s Origin Records, and many have peaked in the top 100 for national airplay in the US.

Ray Vega and Thomas Marriott talk about their new CD on Origin Records, East-West Trumpet Summit
The band Diverse consists of students from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. They all study with saxophonist Bobby Watson. They won a contest that included a recording contract with Origin Records, and the result is Diverse (Origin, 2009), a well-crafted selection of original music. In this interview, trumpeter Hermon Mehari talks about how the band got started; why they ended up playing some tunes in the contest that were written the same day as the performance; and what comes next now that they've made a record and opened for Roy Haynes.
