Stephen Curry might be considered the greatest shooter in basketball history. But Sabrina Ionescu certainly made him prove it Saturday night as part of NBA All-Star Weekend. The Golden State Warriors guard edged the New York Liberty guard 29-26 in an NBA vs. WNBA 3-point contest -- the first of its kind. Ionescu opened by making seven straight shots before finishing with a total score of 26 -- which happened to tie the highest score by any NBA player in the 3-point contest held earlier Saturday night and won by the Milwaukee Bucks' Damian Lillard. With a 92-page order issued late Friday, Judge Arthur Engoron dealt Donald Trump a legal and financial blow that could permanently damage the business empire that propelled him to the presidency. Beyond the staggering $355 million Trump was ordered to pay -- likely to climb to over $450 million with interest -- Engoron temporarily stripped Trump and his sons of the ability to lead their own businesses or apply for financing. The penalties -- which New York Attorney General Letitia James applauded as effective ways to "ensure this fraud cannot continue" -- leave the Trump Organization in legal, financial and personnel limbo, as the former president embarks on a costly presidential campaign amid his ongoing legal battles. around 4.8 billion, some popular platforms are losing favour. Reports indicate that, on average, users engage with six to seven different platforms each month and spend approximately two hours and 24 minutes per day on them. Though social media apps are integral to the daily lives of millions, their popularity can diminish rapidly. According to a report by TRG Datacentres, a US-based tech firm, Meta's Threads app which gained 100 million users in five days saw an 80 per cent drop in daily active users since its launch in July 2023. According to the report, many social media apps struggled to stay relevant throughout the year prompting the organisation to carry out a survey on popular apps that fell out of favour this year. Today's social media landscape is an increasingly fragmented one, where legacy platforms are faltering, giving way to challengers. Within that landscape, social media advertisers and professionals are tasked with experimenting and potentially building audiences as they go. Enter the fediverse. The fediverse is best described as a group of social media networks that are independent but still able to communicate with one another. Theoretically, brands wouldn't be under the thumb of today's monolithic social media platforms, and could instead have more control over their communities. Back in July, Meta's Threads announced a fediverse integration, potentially bridging the gap between advertisers and the fediverse. While advertisers are still scratching the surface of the next iteration of social media, Martin Pagh Ludvigsen, director of creative technology and AI at Goodby, Silverstein and Partners is ready to pitch the innovation to clients, hopeful for innovation in the space. “I'd love to conduct some experiments in the fediverse with some of the brands that we have in house,” he said. “But in order [for clients] to give us permission to do that, they need to find out what the benefits could be for them.”

For all the attention being paid to X (née Twitter) these days, Ariel Sims is keeping a closer eye on Meta's Threads at the moment. Between the two text-based social platforms, the latter is the one that the svp and head of paid social at Digitas North America said she's spending more time talking with clients about and thinking about. “We're having more conversation around [Threads]. But because my remit is typically in paid [advertising and] there's no paid advertising on Threads, it's more of a POV around what are you seeing, what's the usage looking like, how do we play in that space,” Sims said on the latest Digiday Podcast episode. Threads usage appears to have gone down significantly since its launch in early July. According to Sensor Tower, daily usage was down 82% in less than a month. Nonetheless, Sims sees Threads staying in the conversation for “at least the next six, eight months.” At which time Meta may finally introduce ads on Threads after playing coy on its ad plans with ad buyers so far. “All we know is that it's not this year [when Meta will introduce ads to Threads]. That's the only thing that we've heard,” Sims said.

ActivityPub is back in the news, thanks to Meta's Threads launch and Elon's continued immolation of Twitter — now X. That makes this the perfect time to dig into the Decoder archives to hear what Mastodon CEO Eugen Rochko thinks about the future of social media. Mastodon got a head start as the most well-known of the rising decentralized social networks, but that's changing fast. Bluesky, on a competing protocol, is picking up steam and Threads promises to decentralize in the future, using the same ActivityPub protocol as Mastodon. That's a big deal, with big potential. Verge Editor-at-Large David Pierce has been covering all this very closely. Before we jump into the interview with Rochko, I spoke with David to help update everyone on what ActivityPub even is, and what it could mean for the future of social media. Elon Musk is back in the news again. (Really, does he ever leave the news?) Last week, Musk announced a new artificial intelligence venture called xAI. The timing of the launch is odd considering Musk still runs Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, Boring Company, and Twitter. Twitter in particular is causing him headaches, with both its sagging business and increased competition from rivals like Meta's Threads. All of these developments are happening in the shadow of what feels like a lazy subplot on a bad sitcom—a proposed mixed martial arts cage match between Musk and his rival, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. This week, we talk with WIRED editor at large Steven Levy about the launch of xAI and its stated goal of “understanding the true nature of the universe.” We also discuss the places generative artificial intelligence has yet to venture, and the ways in which xAI could make an impact in the field of deep learning. And of course, we talk about that cage match. Yech. Show Notes: Read Steven's Plaintext newsletter, in which he urges Mark Zuckerberg not to take the bait. Will Knight outlines xAI's biggest challenges. Amanda Hoover writes about Threads' threat to Twitter's domain. Paresh Dave gives an update on AI regulation in Europe and the US. Read all of our generative AI coverage. Recommendations: Steven recommends Oppenheimer. So does Lauren. (We discuss it without spoiling it.) Mike recommends pretzel buns, because it's not summer without them. Steven Levy can be found on Twitter @StevenLevy. Lauren Goode is @LaurenGoode. Michael Calore is @snackfight. Welcome back to the Contractor Growth Network Podcast! In this episode, host Logan Shinholser dives into the latest developments in the marketing world and how they relate to your contracting business. Get ready for an insightful conversation on two main topics: Meta's new app, "Threads," and Google's legal action against fake reviews. First up, Logan unpacks Meta's Threads app, which is making waves as the competitor to Twitter. With Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter causing some turbulence, Meta saw an opportunity to step into the business ring. Threads offers a similar interface to Twitter and has already gained over 100 million users within a week. Logan explains why even though Threads may not be the perfect fit for contractors right now, it's crucial to stay aware of its significance, considering the dominant presence of Meta, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp in the online world. Next, Logan delves into Google's fight against fake reviews. He exposes the shady practice of "rank and rent," where scammers manipulate search rankings by creating fake websites and Google business profiles with phony reviews. Google has recognized this fraudulent behavior and is taking legal action to crack down on those involved. Logan warns contractors to be cautious if approached with rank and rent opportunities, emphasizing the importance of building your brand and SEO organically to align with Google's efforts to maintain a trustworthy online ecosystem. In addition to these intriguing topics, Logan shares valuable insights on effectively communicating your company's vision. Drawing from his recent experience at Contractor Growth Network's end-of-quarter meeting, he highlights the impact of visualizing and sharing the company's direction with the team. Discover how a clear vision can foster team morale, engagement, and a sense of purpose. So, if you're a contractor looking to stay ahead of the game, this episode is a must-listen! Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real THREADS talk! But first, Laura gives a 30 second blitz update about our fucked up student loan situation. Last week, Meta launched its Twitter competitor, Threads, and we were among the early adopters. #influencers We provide a full review of Threads: the good, the bad, the missing features. Will Threads steal our hearts, or can we just not quit Twitter? Personal threads wishlists: following tab (for n00ds), hashtags (for n00ds), and close friends list (for n00ds). With a number of recent and upcoming adaptations of popular toys and brands, we take a trip down memory lane to the 90s and give some recommendations we believe would KILL with millennial audiences. Dark Side of Barney: "I always say I love you, but you never say it back so now I'm on Lexapro." With Furby making a comeback, could we see attempts for a Furby movie? It might sound like a stretch, but don't forget they made an Angry Birds movie. Tfw you realize popular 90s board games could be adapted into horror films. :eyes: We've got a bone to pick with major brands ditching their rewards and birthday perks programs! Don't y'all have enough money? Stop taking my free birthday coffee away! Pam breaks some bad news to Laura about Sephora's birthday gift. :'( Do brands really think eliminating these loyalty perks will save them substantial money? How can they evolve to meet shoppers' preference for online purchasing habits? This week's recommendations are FUN and FUNDAMENTAL: Read about the Biden administrations proposed SAVE income-based repayment plan (Laura), 'Won't You Be My Neighbor?' on Netflix (Pam), and 'The Diplomat' on Netflix (Andrew). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available to Patrons and Apple Podcast subscribers: Every high school as an "incident," and we spill the tea on each of our high schools' most remembered mishaps and events. Pam tells a story with a twist that you WON'T see coming - we're clutching our pearls. "Yeah, totally no problem that the gym coach has a window looking directly in the girls' locker room.
