“We started to feel like there was something bigger here, that this could be transformational,” says Jason Radisson, co-founder and CEO of Sh1ft, which brings push button technology to blue collar and middle class work, and is transforming HR in the B2B spaces by implementing gig economy-style automation and efficiency. Sh1ft promises to eliminate 80 to 90 percent of a traditional HR employee's role by resolving issues such as schedule inefficiencies and time fraud. Sh1ft is currently making great strides in the professions of engineering, construction, and nursing.  Born to a young, single mother, Jason learned early on from the people around him both the value of hard work and the value of education to upskill and land better jobs. He and Brendan discuss good and bad reasons for attending school and in what instances attending top schools, like his alma mater Harvard, is a worthwhile pursuit. He explains how certain companies become like mafias and why that's a good thing.  Later, he explains why the white collar job sector will be saturated in the future, the transformation of local markets into national ones, and what's in store for blockchain and crypto. Brendan describes the two classes of skills which will guarantee success in the modern economy. In this week's Five Good Questions, we're interviewing Tim Koller about the 7th edition of Valuation. Tim Koller is a core leader of the Corporate Finance Practice at McKinsey. During his more than 28 years of consulting, Tim has served clients globally on value creation, corporate strategy, capital-markets issues, and M&A transactions. Tim is the lead author of Valuation: Measuring and Managing the Value of Companies. This book—now in its seventh edition—has sold more than 800,000 copies. Before joining McKinsey, Tim was a vice president at Stern Stewart & Company, a leading value-based management-advisory firm, where he helped develop key financial-analytical tools and software. He has also lectured at business schools, such as the University of Chicago, Northwestern, Tuck, Yale, and INSEAD. Five Good Questions: 1. Do the growth rates and ROICs of today’s market favorites that are implied by their prices seem justified to produce an attractive future TSR? 2. Will profit margins and returns on capital mean revert after a prolonged period above their historical norms? Are the higher P/Es of today justified? 3. When forecasting the impacts of digitization, how do we factor in competition and pricing with respect to cash flows? (What are the odds of “Winner Take All” vs. “Red Queen Effect” where most of the value flows through to consumer surplus?) 4. What’s the most pervasive and pernicious myth in finance that just won’t die? 5. What’s the most likely mistake a business analyst will make over the next decade?

How is a company’s true value measured?  And why is there such a discrepancy in corporate valuations between Wall Street, Main Street, employees and investors? In this informative discussion, Tim Koller, Partner and Core Leader of the Corporate Finance Practice at McKinsey & Company and co-author of the book, Valuation, helps us solve these apparent contradictions with our Marketing Institute Leader, JP Kuehlwein – and also offers his own expert guidance on how to properly assess a corporation’s value.

Conversation with Tim Koller, a core leader of McKinsey & Company’s Corporate Finance Practice. “WHAT is the most influential contemporary book about the world economy? An obvious choice is Capital in the Twenty First Century, a 696 page analysis of inequality by Thomas Piketty, a French economist. There is another candidate: Valuation, an 825page manual on corporate finance and shareholder value. Some 700,000 copies of it encumber the bookshelves of MBA students, investors and chief executives around the globe…The sixth edition of Valuation, published last year, a quarter of a century after the first, is a reminder of why shareholder value is still the most powerful idea in business and why many criticisms thrown at it are unfair.” – The Economist “A 'how-to' guide for corporate executives who want to get at the unrealized shareholder values trapped in public companies.” ―New York Times “The book's clarity and comprehensive coverage make it one of the best practitioners' guides to valuation.” ―Financial Times

How do you value something? It seems simple enough. Since the beginning of commerce thousands of years ago, people have been asserting the value of enterprises. Yet, the math and specific logic of that exercise is only about a century old. For thirty of those years, Tim Koller and his colleagues at McKinsey, the consultancy, have been in the forefront of how to think about value and how to measure it. The first edition of Valuation: Measuring and Managing the Value of Companies (Wiley) came out in 1990; this is the seventh iteration, so Koller has been through numerous ups and downs. His calm and cool reasoning should be required reading for all business managers and investors.  Daniel Peris is Senior Vice President at Federated Investors in Pittsburgh. Rob Sharps, head of investments at T. Rowe Price, says investors need to focus on balance sheets, fundamentals and 'the ability of businesses to make it to the other side [of the pandemic] with their businesses intact,' and warns that we're well past the point where investors can buy stocks broadly and expect to benefit from a recovery. 'Aggregate market valuations,' he says, 'have never been more meaningless,' making the case for tactical decision-making and solid stock-picking. Earlier on the show, Fritz Folts, chief investment strategist at 3EDGE Asset Management, said that the US market is significantly overvalued, which has him looking at global assets -- especially in emerging markets -- and trimming his domestic holdings sharply. Rounding out the discussions -- and bringing additional focus to valuations -- Tim Koller, co-author of 'Valuation,' a business standard now out in its seventh edition, talks about how the pandemic has impacted the valuation of public and private companies.
