This week on So, You Like Horror?, I'll dive into the dark, strange, and disturbing world of Netflix's Black Mirror. Rather than breaking down every season, this solo episode looks at some of the stories that best define the series and asks the big question: Is Black Mirror actually horror? From the obsession of “The Entire History of You” and the grief of “Be Right Back” to the public cruelty of “White Bear,” the supernatural horror of “Demon 79,” the celebrity exploitation of “Mazey Day,” and the relentless machine terror of “Metalhead,” I explore how Black Mirror uses science fiction, technology, surveillance, grief, isolation, and human behavior to create some of television's most unsettling stories. I'll also discuss episodes including “Nosedive,” “Shut Up and Dance,” “Playtest,” “Beyond the Sea,” and “Arkangel,” along with honorable mentions like “Common People,” “White Christmas,” and “San Junipero.” We also dig into the bigger themes running through the series: privacy, artificial intelligence, digital consciousness, corporate control, identity, voyeurism, and why technology usually isn't the real monster in Black Mirror. So where does Black Mirror fit between science fiction, thriller, satire, and horror? And what has made the series such a lasting part of modern pop culture? Press play and take a look into the Black Mirror.

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE OF SYLAK
Interview by Angela CroudaceAustralian heavy outfit Arkangel are charging into a bold new chapter with their latest single, Haunting My Dreams, set for release on September 5. The track marks a defining moment for the band, not only in sound but in ambition, and features a powerful collaboration with electro-driven artist Misstiq. For vocalist Jake Harrop, the collaboration was a dream realised. “I'd always wanted to work with Misstiq—her synth work is incredible, and she brought a whole new energy to the track,” he explains. “We already loved the song before she jumped on it, but when she added her vocals and flair, it just took it to another level.”The single was produced by ARIA-nominated songwriter and producer Callan Orr, who Harrop describes as “like a fifth member of the band,” and accompanied by a visually striking music video filmed at Melbourne's historic Old Jail with acclaimed director Colin Jeffs. “If we were ever going to go all out, this was the one to do it for,” Harrop says. “It's our favourite song we've written so far, and we wanted everything around it to match the scale and intensity.”Since forming in late 2022, Arkangel have been quick to make their mark, with their debut EP racking up over 250,000 streams and a relentless schedule of nearly 30 shows across Australia. The band's unique blend of crushing heaviness and atmospheric synths has earned them both a loyal fan base and the respect of peers in the heavy scene.Looking ahead, Arkangel aren't slowing down. With more singles already in the works, including additional collaborations and a return to the studio immediately after this release, the band is focused on pushing boundaries. Fans can also catch Haunting My Dreams live at Ark Fest on November 1, where Arkangel will headline alongside a stacked line up.Tickets are available now via Oztix.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Vi gennemgår afsnittene Arkangel (2017), Be Right Back (2013) og Fifteen Million Merits (2011). Vært: Marcel Mirzaei-Fard, tech-analytiker. This week we swap opinions on and stories of the many, many, many great bands playing FYA in January 2025. The promoters changed the venue since the initial announcement so we didn't really talk about the controversy, but we did express our displeasure with Think I Care not even getting the logo treatment on the flier. We also talk Todd Jones's probable sociopathy and now he might kill us if we go. No he won't. No one listens to this show. This is episode 12 - it's the third week of February 1940 and the Russians have eventually succeeded in punching a hole through the Mannerheim Line. As you heard last episode, the second major offensive began on the 11th February when Russian commander Timoshenko ordered a massive bombardment followed by focused thrusts at Poppius and Million Dollar bunkers. That section of the line was pierced but only after a few more thousand Russians had been listed as casualties. The Russians had also attacked in force near Taipale, charging across open ice in suicidal rushes, marching across Lake Ladoga like it was a parade ground exercise. The fighting here was intense, and on the 14th February, 2 500 Red Army troops died in the space of a few hours trying to overcome the Finnish positions. Soviet aircraft were also bombing this sector daily, at least 100 planes a day flew over strafing and bombing the Finns. In the sector further west near the Muolaa Church, it was carnage. The most exposed Finnish position was alongside this church, on the banks of Lake Kirkkojarvi. There was a large Finnish bunker here, but troops had to crawl out across a wasteland, and across at least one coffin that had been unearthed in the bombardments. The devil is in the details when there's a war. Back in Moscow, Joseph Stalin received the news that Summa had fallen. He'd been misinformed before and didn't believe the report, demanding that eyewitnesses contact him to confirm the sight of the flag of the USSR flying over the Summa pillboxes then phone him. They did and he accepted their word. Things were growing more and more grim for the Finns. They had no more reserves of men, and by now, into the third week of February, 16 year-old boys were being armed along with geriatrics and even convicts were being issued uniforms. Only the less serious criminals, but still, you get the idea. Meanwhile, back in Russia, subterfuge and intelligence were confounding Stalin — which is always the best technique to deal with a maniacal despot. Always paranoid, Stalin had been kept aware of Allied initial plans to seize the Finnish nickel mines at Petsamo in the north, then invade Murmansk — or even more outrageous plan to invade Arkangel. The British had managed to get their hands on a bullet-riddled Finnish code book and had heard that Mannerheim believed his men could hold out until at least May. That piece of unfiltered information was a fillup for the British. Desmond Latham blog

Fans of our show know that The Wolf and Action Jackson have a special place in their hearts for 80s prog/pop rock band Asia. While we've spoken with keyboardist Geoff Downes (UAWIL 79) and drummer Carl Palmer (UAWIL 80), we never had the opportunity to speak with singer/bassist John Wetton as he passed away before we started our show. However, there have been many celebrations of John's life and works in 2023 and to tell us more about the kind of person John Wetton was, we've enlisted the great Oliver Wakeman to offer some stories about the man himself. Oliver toured with Yes during 2009-2011 and during that time, befriended John Wetton as Asia was touring with Yes. Despite Oliver being a generation younger and the fact that John had worked with his father Rick, John took Oliver under his wing and they formed a bond that had a big impact on Oliver (and John too). Oliver relates some stories of his time with John including watching him play every night, how John checked in on him as he slated to transition out of Yes and one time John joined Oliver and his band to play Heat of the Moment. Oliver will also give us some tidbits about music he's working on, including his plan to play songs he wrote with Yes on From A Page live this spring at Winters End Festival. Oliver is helping to promote the new box set John Wetton: An Extraordinary Life which is out November 24 around the world - an 8 disc set of his solo albums with bonus tracks and discs full of rarities, unreleased gems and live cuts (more information below). We had a great time chatting with Oliver and hope you'll enjoy our conversation about John, Yes, prog music and more! The An Extraordinary Life box set contains 8 newly remastered CDs, featuring the six solo albums Wetton released between 1980 and 2011. Each album now includes special bonus tracks. Additionally, two further discs are included which feature a gold mine of rare, live and unreleased material from the vaults, compiled by John`s archivist, Rick Nelson. Check out trailer for the box set here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EE0HFoq2Ck Housed in a sumptuous 12 by 12 box, this set includes a 64-page book with an introduction by legendary artist, Roger Dean and contains comprehensive sleeve notes by Nick Shilton, author of Wetton's biography, An Extraordinary Life, published earlier this year. The book also features a raft of photographs taken from the Wetton archive and has been designed by John's long-time friend, Michael Inns. This whole project has been lovingly crafted and compiled with the full blessing of John`s son Dylan and his wife Lisa and is endorsed by the Wetton estate. This episode we are joined by Joy Piedmont of multiple other Doctor Who podcasts (such as Reality Bomb and Five Years Rapid) to discuss K9 Episode 8, "Jaws of Orthrus", originally broadcast on 1 March 2010. "Jaws of Orthrus" was written by "Lindsay James" (a pseudonym for writer Keith Shaw) and directed by James Bogle. Listeners can follow the podcast on Twitter at @K9BingeQuake or email feedback and comments to us at k9bingequake@gmail.com. ** Credits: Hosts - Tom Marshall (he/him) & Kevin Burnard (he/him) Guest - Joy Piedmont (she/her) Editing - Kevin Burnard Theme music - Jack Guidera (he/him) Logo/Artwork - Christy Burnard (she/her) Episode recorded 25 February 2023. ** Sources: The Black Mirror episode Arkangel was written by Charlie Brooker and directed by Jodie Foster and released by Netflix on 29 December 2017. Among other sources, and allowing for various spellings, the name 'Orthrus' to refer to a mythological hound comes from the Bibliotheca conventionally but falsely ascribed to Apollodorus of Athens (1st or 2nd century AD, trans. James George Frazer, 1921, Harvard University Press/William Heinemann Ltd), Book 2, Chapter 5. On the target audience for K9 being (supposedly) 11-15 year olds - "K9: Who's a good dog?", Stewart & Wall Entertainment, archived from the original on 12 August 2014. This is contradicted by the claim that the show is aimed at 8-12 year olds in Blum, Jonathan, "K9", Doctor Who Magazine #409 (24 June 2009), p. 8. The IMDb profile for Keith Shaw/"Lindsay James", including more information on Avalanche Sharks, can be found here. The classic series stories written under pseudonyms are The Dominators, The Daemons, Pyramids of Mars, The Brain of Morbius, The Invasion of Time, City of Death and Attack of the Cybermen, as listed by Sullivan, Shannon Patrick, A Brief History of Time (Travel), last updated 13 July 2020, 8 August 2020, 21 December 2020, 27 December 2020, 12 February 2021, 10 May 2021 and 25 June 2021 respectively. The childhood series Joy refers to are Saved by the Bell (1989-93), Batman: The Animated Series (1992-5), Barney & Friends (1992-2010), Animaniacs (1993-8), Zoom (1999-2005), and Hannah Montana (2006-11).

A Black mirror brit antológia-sorozat. A csatornán sokat foglalkozok társadalmi kérdésekkel. On this episode we're jumping into the fourth season of that techno-dystopia series, Black Mirror. and it's episodes; 'USS Callister', 'ArkAngel', 'Crocodile', 'Hang the DJ', 'Metalhead', and the mind-bending finale, 'Black Museum'... We're gonna review each ep, while comparing their oh-so clever tech to the stuff that's been creeping into our lives lately. You may think we're far off from turning parents into obsessive surveillance maniacs, or people's memories becoming as accessible as old photo albums, but i'd say we're already half-way there with some of this upcoming tech. if you'd like to support or follow this podcast please check out the links at https://linktr.ee/anticontent

In this episode we're talking about the new book, Theology and Black Mirror (published by Lexington and Fortress Academic—imprints of Rowman & Littlefield), that was edited by team members from The Two Cities podcast, Dr. Amber Bowen and Dr. John Anthony Dunne. Joining us for this conversation on our favorite technological dystopian show on Netflix are four contributors to the volume, who each tell us what they love about Black Mirror and what they wrote about for our volume. Our guests are Dr. Megan Fritts, who is assistant professor of philosophy at the College of St. Scholastica (Duluth, Minnesota), Dr. Rebekah Lamb, who is lecturer in theology and the arts at the Institute of Theology, Imagination, and the Arts at St Mary's College at the University of St Andrews (Scotland), Dr. Joanna Leidenhag, who is lecturer in theology and liberal arts at the University of Leeds (England), and Dr. King-Ho Leung, who is senior research fellow at St Mary's College at the University of St Andrews (Scotland). Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. Amber Bowen and Dr. John Anthony Dunne. The essays from Theology and Black Mirror that were discussed in this episode include the following: Chapter 2, “Barbarism, Boredom, and the Question Concerning: Pornography in Fifteen Million Merits” (by Amber Bowen) Chapter 6, “Arkangel and the Death of God: A Nietzschean Critique of Technology's Soteriological Scheme” (by Amber Bowen and Megan Fritts) Chapter 7, “Seeing and Being Seen in a Black Mirror, Dimly: Phenomenology and the Dim View of White Christmas” (by King-Ho Leung and Patrick McGlinchey) Chapter 14, “Be Right Back and the Ethics of Mourning: (In)Authenticity and Resurrection in the Digital Age” (by Rebekah Lamb and Joanna Leidenhag) The book is presently available for purchase in hardcopy and as an e-book, wherever you get your books (with plans to make a paperback at some point). For those interested in purchasing the book, there is a discount code to use on the publisher's website (rowman.com) for 30% off (use code LXFANDF30 at checkout). Otherwise, you can also request that your local library or institutional library purchase a copy (whether physical or electronic).

Yes. Parents have the right to supervise their children. As the owners of electronic devices, parents also have the right to install or remove software and establish rules for the use of the device. Does it work? Sonia Livingstone, a professor in the department of media and communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science, believes there is in fact “zero evidence that any of these apps keep children safer”. "I've never seen any and I look at all the evidence,” she says. Are both parents in agreement? When does parental supervision cross over into invasive surveillance? Are one or both parents becoming digital voyeurs? Are parents unknowingly sharing information with third parties? Could this intensely personal information be hacked? Is it a breach of familial trust? Very hard to justify hidden monitoring of child Parents should not try to get into a contest with children re technology use Open conversation is critical Challenges in dual-custody situations. Does it stunt the development of child independence and the ability to pay attention to their surroundings? A loving mother, World War I nurse and devoted wife, Saint Alexandra the Passion Bearer probably would have been a lot better off in life if she'd stayed a Princess of a minor German Duchy. She however fell in love with a young man named Nicholas and became the Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. One of the most infamous female rulers in modern history, Alexandra has become known as a tragic and selfish figure who contributed to the downfall of the 300-year-old Romanov dynasty due to the influence of the manipulative mad monk, Rasputin. Eventually she and her family would meet their death at the hands of Red Army soldiers. Why was Alexandra such a problematic figure in the eyes of so many Russians? Yes, it's because she was German. But there's far more to it than that. Women of War is recorded on Wurundjeri land. We pay our respects to their elders past and present. Sovereignty was never ceded. This episode contains references to rape, sexual threats towards children and sexual assault, haemophilia, the murder of children, war crimes, interference with and the defilement of corpses, miscarriage, birth trauma, infertility, civilian deaths, starvation, fire, child death, pedophilia and bleeding. It also contains some naughty language. All efforts have been made to ensure the accuracy of the information presented in this podcast however with the nature of historical research, there may be mistakes or inconsistencies. Opinions presented about Orlando Figes are in jest and do not represent the speaker's actual views. For more information on the Russian Revolution, check out Orlando Figes' A People's Tragedy or, for a less backbreaking tome, Revolutionary Russia, 1891-1991. For more information on the Romanov dynasty, see The Romanovs: 1613-1918 by Simon Sebag Montefiore. Or just go to your local library, there'll be something.
