Class is back in session, ladies! Once again, Sarah's sharing study notes from her graduate courses at Concordia University Irvine's Townsend Institute for Counseling and Leadership. In this episode on focus and productivity, drawn largely from Michael Hyatt's Free to Focus: A Total Productivity System to Achieve More by Doing Less, she covers how to: STOP. This is where we Formulate, Evaluate, and Rejuvenate. CUT. This is where we Eliminate, Automate, and Delegate. ACT. This is where we Consolidate, Designate, and Activate. “Putting some of these concepts into action has helped me so much with focusing my work and productivity – and letting go of the ‘hustle-productivity-do-all-the-things-at-once' culture,” says Sarah. “We stress ourselves out about doing 'all the things' and just need a reminder that it's okay to not do 'all the things.' We aren't called to do that. We're called to serve each other in love because we are forgiven children of God, and that in itself gives us a lot of freedom.” Connect with the Lutheran Ladies on social media in The Lutheran Ladies' Lounge Facebook discussion group (facebook.com/groups/LutheranLadiesLounge) and on Instagram @lutheranladieslounge. https://www.youtube.com/live/qPXJGJyg7z8 Have you ever had a moment where you suddenly realized that what truly matters isn't all the hustle, the accomplishments, or even the legacy you're trying so hard to build? That was Josh, standing in his driveway on a vacation in Florida, juggling his entrepreneurial dreams while feeling the weight of parenting. He was caught in that mental struggle we all face—balancing the demands of work and family, trying to get everything done while making sure He's present for the moments that really matter. Then a friend said something that stopped him in my tracks: “You'll never have a six-month-old son again.” Those words hit him hard. It wasn't just a reminder about the fleeting nature of time; it was a call to be present, to focus on what truly matters—his family—a call to be famous at home. Why Emotional Safety is the Key to SuccessAbout Josh StraubEmotional Safety: The Foundation of Lasting RelationshipsBalancing Identity: Who You Are vs. What You DoLiving in Abundance, Not ScarcitySlowing Down to Speed Up: The Importance of Rest and RhythmsHow Emotional Safety Can Transform Your Family and LegacyLearn More with Famous at HomeBook a Strategy Call Why Emotional Safety is the Key to Success In today's fast-paced world, where we're all striving to build financial security, career success, and lasting legacies, it's easy to forget the importance of the relationships that matter most. We often spend so much time focusing on what we can achieve that our families end up getting our leftovers. But what if I told you that the secret to true success—both at home and in business—comes from creating emotional safety in your family? During my conversation with Josh Straub, co-author of Famous at Home, we dove deep into this idea of emotional safety as the foundation for everything else. Whether you're raising kids, building a business, or nurturing a marriage, emotional safety is the core element that allows you and your loved ones to thrive. I'm going to share key takeaways from my conversation with Josh about how you can build emotional safety, cultivate stronger relationships, and ultimately create a lasting legacy—one that goes beyond financial success. About Josh Straub Josh is most renowned for his role as a husband and dad. He is also a recovering human, an ongoing journey that includes therapy, coaching, a tight-knit faith community, and staying fit. Josh is a speaker, author, marriage and leadership coach, and a podcast and TV cohost. He and his wife, Christi, lead Famous at Home, a company equipping leaders and corporations in emotional intelligence and healthy family systems. Josh is also a Fellow of the Townsend Institute for Leadership and Counseling. Josh most enjoys coaching leaders to be famous at home so they can thrive on their stage. He also speaks regularly for Joint Special Operations Command and serves military families across the country. Josh is author/ coauthor of six books including Safe House: How Emotional Safety is the Key to Raising Kids Who Live, Love, and Lead Well. He and his wife, Christi, host the Famous at Home podcast and co-wrote a recent children's book, to help parents foster emotional awareness in kids, called What Am I Feeling? Emotional Safety: The Foundation of Lasting Relationships Josh and his wife Christy started their journey by asking a simple but profound question: What matters most when we look back on our lives? After facing their own challenges early in parenting—including colic, acid reflux, and the stress of family illnesses—they realized that despite all the advice from parenting experts, the one thing that truly mattered was creating emotional safety in the home. Emotional safety isn't just about keeping the peace; it's about making sure that your family feels heard, seen, and loved. It's the hub of the wheel, the center from which everything else—discipline, communication,
Class is back in session, ladies! Once again, Sarah's sharing study notes from her graduate courses at Concordia University Irvine's Townsend Institute for Counseling and Leadership. In this episode on achieving “wildly important goals,” she covers how to: Identify and focus on life goals that are “wildly important” — and worth going after wholeheartedly Act on “lead measures” of progress while tracking that progress through “lag measures” Keep a “compelling scoreboard” to help you visualize and celebrate every small achievement Create a “cadence of accountability” to keep you honest, on pace, and moving forward “If you made ONE change in behavior, habits, schedules, what would it be that changes the course of your life?” Sarah challenges Erin and Sarah in this episode, adding later, “This is supposed to be a winnable game, but also a really high-stakes game.” To dig more deeply into the material covered in this episode, check out The 4 Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey, and Jim Huling. Would you call yourself an emotionally healthy person? Let me make a bold statement, and say: none of us in this world is completely emotionally healthy. But there's a way to provide and receive healing. Tune into my conversation with Brandon Cordon and learn: The most important ingredient to intimacy and cognitive development. How a person becomes an enabler or abuser and why they are attracted to each other. What he teaches codependency is vs what you might have learned it was. The importance of healing instead of only coping. What empathy actually looks like. How healthy attachment is critical to intimacy and self-worth. What self-worth actually is, instead of how we learned to validate ourselves from our family and culture. How culture, family dynamics and epigenetics foster an environment which creates traumas, emotional and personality disorders, and addictions. How Christianity mirrors neuroscience as a means to move from struggle to thriving via the church yet is failing at. Brandon Cordon is a therapist in California with Masters in Counseling from Concordia University Irvine at the Townsend Institute. He holds a bachelors of science in Biblical and theological studies from Mid-Atlantic Christian University and is an educator who provides trainigs for clinicians and leaders of churches. He is passionate about helping people heal their emotional trauma rather than simply manage it. In 2018, our guest Caleigh Weichbrodt was radically saved from a life of addiction and atheism by the Lord in a powerful encounter with Him. Since then, she's seen firsthand how surrendering your life to Christ opens the door for incredible transformation and has been healed from anxiety, depression, addiction, Borderline Personality Disorder, and trauma. Caleigh's mission is to share the same message of grace and hope that saved her – that no one is too far gone or too broken to be restored – and to see lives transformed through the power of personally encountering the Lord. www.gathergrowministries.com Go here for a free guide to unlocking God's unshakable joy from Gather Grow Ministries: https://www.gathergrowministries.com/free-guide-unshakeable-joy Dive deeper into the subject of encounters with the book by your host, Joshua Marcengill. We're back in class, ladies! Once again, Sarah's sharing study notes from her graduate courses at Concordia University Irvine's Townsend Institute for Counseling and Leadership. In this insightful episode, she covers: How great teamwork skills relate to the Body of Christ Pat Lencioni's Working Genius model for productivity How a productivity model applies to everything from marriage, to church council, to homeschool co-ops "I think the most beautiful part about this is how Lencioni frames the [Working Genius] model,” Sarah says. “He specifically talks about the geniuses as the things God has gifted you to do, how He has wired you. I've talked about this before in several places, about recognizing the gifts God has given and not given to us, and using those gifts to the best of our abilities. This fits so beautifully with our description of the Body of Christ, that each of us in individually gifted with ways to serve each other within the unity of the Body. So this assessment gives us insight into how God has wired us so we can lean into the spaces that are our strengths, and uplift others in the spaces that are not our strengths but someone else's strength.” Find the Working Genius podcast, book, assessment, and insights at workinggenius.com. Nancy’s life was like a movie. A bad one. One traumatic moment after another followed by repeated intense drama. Her life looked like it was headed to an apocalyptic crushing conclusion … then an unexpected turnaround when she met Jesus and Ron. What Nancy went through is the foundation of one of our most open, uninhibited conversations about emotional abuse, sexual trauma, healing and freedom. In this Brave Men episode Paul talks in depth with noted therapist Nancy Houston about her life, her observations on trauma and how we can find healing. Nancy is an author, speaker, Executive Leadership Coach, Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Sex Therapist. In the first of an in-depth two-part series we walk into the depths of despair that so many of us have experienced. We talk openly about the most difficult issues that are usually hidden in the desire to look ‘normal.’ What’s hidden stays hurting. Repeated trauma can be healed. Here’s how. Most recently Nancy has developed and leads Next Level Leadership Groups which is a relational approach to leadership. Nancy is a former adjunct at DBU and Concordia University and a fellow at the Townsend Institute at Concordia University. There's no question that your environment impacts your experience. The people you surround yourself with will influence the trajectory of your life. Who are those people in your life? Are they constructive or destructive? Do they push you closer to your goals or pull you further away? Do they motivate you to become your best, or allow you to settle for less? Thankfully, today as we reflect on some of these questions, we will be guided by a renowned business consultant, leadership coach, best-selling author, and psychologist who knows the power of relationships, Dr. John Townsend. In today's conversation we'll be unpacking his newest book, People Fuel, as we learn how we can fill our tanks for life, love, and leadership. In the same way, John identifies the key Relational Nutrients that we need as well. As we experience these critical elements from others, we grow mentally and emotionally more sharp and healthy. And as we give these elements back, others benefit as well. So buckle up and get ready for an incredible conversation as the person who taught you how to have boundaries now helps you to experience the best from those people you have allowed into your boundaries. Thinking caps on, ladies! Class is in session! Once again, Sarah's sharing study notes from her graduate courses at Concordia University Irvine's Townsend Institute for Counseling and Leadership. In this stimulating episode, she covers: Macro cultures and their effect on organizations and communities The value of articulating personal values, mission, and vision statements A helpful model for engaging in difficult conversations "What happens when we avoid hard conversations?” Sarah asks. “Things fester, grow, become more of a problem, become more stressful, and become harder to manage, right? So if we have the confidence to deal with something at the start, we can manage things in a better, more productive way. ... We want to ultimately build up relationships and become closer to people, and dealing with conflict in a healthy manner can actually do that. Building up a culture of healthy confrontation means people live in truth with each other rather than avoiding the truth.” Resources referenced in this episode include: “Having Difficult but Effective Conversations” by Dr. John Townsend Organizational Culture and Leadership by Edgar H. This week on Real Talk with Rachael I chatted with Nancy Houston. Nancy is an Executive Leadership Coach, a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Sex Therapist, and author of “Love and Sex: A Christian Guide to Healthy Intimacy" and "Then God Made a Woman: Unwrapping Female Sexuality.” Nancy developed and leads Next Level Leadership Groups which is a relational approach to leadership. She is also a former adjunct at DBU and Concordia University and a fellow at the Townsend Institute at Concordia University. Key Points from Our Conversation: If you've experienced sexual trauma, the beginning of healing is understanding that what happened wasn't your fault and you don't need to carry shame. If you've survived a trauma, show yourself some gratitude for enduring something hard. Then address the effects of that trauma. It's hard work, but God is asking you to press in. God designed us to be sexual creatures. We can experience so much freedom if we have the courage to have great conversations around the topic of sex. When speaking to our children about sex, using proper medical terms for genitalia creates a sense of authority on the topic. Women are just as sexual, if not more sexual, than men but the process of arousal is different. Women tend to feel guilty about taking time to get aroused, but receiving pleasure guilt-free is good for you. We have to own our bodies as women, therefore we have to know our own bodies. Take time to explore. God created sex to be both extremely pleasurable and bonding. If you're struggling with shame, stop hating yourself. You are so worth loving. Be kind to yourself. Let's Get Real Practical: Ask God if there is any area of your sexuality that needs to be restored. Failure to say “no” to others can wreak havoc in our lives, so why are we so afraid to say no? Dr. John Townsend joins Les Norman and Jeremy Brownlee to answer this question and discuss setting boundaries for healthy relationships and determining a mature Christian leader. A nationally known leadership consultant, author, and psychologist, Dr. Townsend brings his knowledge of biblical leadership and counseling to teach us how to guard our hearts. He uses John 1:14 to encourage listeners to seek relationships with people full of grace and truth, so they have people to help them prune back the good from the great. Can you believe it's already the last week of May? It's absolutley crazy how fast time is flying this year! That being said, we are in our final episode of our Mental Health Awareness Series here on the podcast, but trust me when I say, I think I saved one of, if not, the most important topics for last. Today we're going to be talking all about BOUNDARIES. Let's be honest, one of the great challenges in life for pretty much everyone is the ability to set and actually implement healthy boundaries and to discern when to say yes and when or even how to say no. Thankfully, Joining us today is a man that is not only a dear friend to all of us here at the American Association of Christian Counselors, but he's also a leading voice on the topic of Boundaries, Dr. John Townsend. Many of you may be familiar with John's work as he and Dr. Henry Cloud had the incredible opportunity of collaborating together to write the New York Times best-selling book titled Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No, to Take Control of your life. But beyond that incredible work, John has written several other best-sellers such as People Fuel, Leading From Your Gut, and the Entitlement Cure. He's a business consultant, leadership coach, and psychologist. He's a man who has over 20 years of experience in meeting and engaging with leaders, organizations, and individuals all around the globe to help offer them life-changing solutions to their problems. He hosts his own online live video call-in program called, Dr. Townsend Live and is the cohost of the exploding nationally-syndicated talk show “NEW LIFE LIVE.” And then in addition to all of those incredible feats and endeavors, John spends a lot of his time developing others through the Townsend Leadership Program and the Townsend Institute for Leadership and Counseling. That being said, in and throughout our conversation today, you'll have the opportunity of gleaning so much from his wealth of knowledge and wisdom and to more fully understand what boundaries are, why it's so difficult to implement them, and healthy ways in which we can begin saying no and setting boundaries through understanding that boundaries are biblical and that they actually help us not only love ourselves but also others more deeply and effectively.
