The murder of MacDuff's family. MacDuff persuades Malcolm to return from England with English forces. Lady Macbeth sleepwalks, washing her hands. Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane. Macbeth goes down fighting. Can Macbeth be called heroic, or is he merely a “dead butcher”? We admire ambitious men who trample all obstacles in their path, including other people, don't we? A play for our time.

If you've listened to this podcast before, you probably noticed that I am pretty critical of Donald Trump's foreign policy. While I don't reject everything he does, I have some pretty fundamental issues with how he treats Europe, NATO or America's allies and its international commitments in general. And you also might have noticed that many of my guests are very critical of Donald Trump's foreign policy as well - just in recent months I spoke with John Bolton, Anne Applebaum, Francis Fukuyama all of whom have been even more critical than me. However, I don't want to close myself off in my own bubble, and I think it's good to be open to ideas of people with other views, especially if they argue in good faith and if we agree on some basic values. And that's why I'm speaking with Victor today. He is a pretty staunch Trump supporter but he also has many views that are not typically associated with Trump - he strongly supports NATO, he is a major supporter of Ukraine, he is hawkish on Russia and advocates for the U.S. to arm and he is overall the type that most Donald Trump supporters might call a “neoconservative” with views that Donald Trump himself has frequently criticized. And so we speak about how all those things go together. How does protecting the postwar-liberal order go together with Trump talking about annexing Greenland and Canada, why didn't Trump end the war in 24 hours as he promised or whether he was naive in his plan for how to do that, how can Europe be in an alliance with a U.S. president who doesn't believe in alliances or why he thinks that Trump is the most pro-European U.S. president in history. To clarify, I don't agree with many of the views that Victor has talked about on European or Americans domestic politics but that's not what the podcast is about and I didn't want to focus on. And I'm still not sure whether I agree with anything that he said - but despite that, I think that it's a fascinating conversation that I was really glad to have. And I heard a perspective that might not be the same as mine but that I still found to be really interesting - I hope you'll feel the same way.
The story of Medea has been popular since antiquity and continues to endure today. Not least because big names want what's undoubtedly one of the meatiest female roles in theatre. Meatiest in its most gruesome sense, as Medea is most famous for killing her children in order to get revenge on her faithless husband. Or at least that's the headlines. It is, of course, more complicated (if no less horrifying) than that, so our Mick was delighted that author, broadcaster and classicist Natalie Haynes' latest novel, No Friend to This House, is her take on the Medea story. They talk Medea as witch and midwife, Medea as refugee, the power of love, the dangers of motherhood and why Medea has proven so endlessly fascinating to storytellers and story listeners alike. No Friend to This House is published by Mantle on Thursday 11 September, but available for pre-order now. Goethe does judge Faust morally, but not in the Aristotelian framework of the tragic hero, which is how he'd like to see himself. He is instead an antihero, redeemed, but not by the sacrifice of Christ: instead, perhaps unfortunately, through that of an innocent female figure, saving an unworthy man. The metaphor of the waterfall, the rainbow created by the sun within its spray: spirit immanent in this material world. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michael-dolzani/support
Following on from the last episode on Jordan Peterson's brilliant 2005 essay on "Peacemaking" this time we look at what went wrong and at JBP's arc as that of the classical tragic hero. And having a bit of fun with this we compare him to the villain in one of my favourite fantasy series Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. We look at Aristotle's definition of tragedy, and at mapovers between Peterson and Mistborn's Lord Ruler and also Dune's Paul Atreides. ____________________

One of the most famous personalities from the late-Spring and Autumn period, Wu Zixu was someone I grew up learning about as a commendable character. But, upon revisiting his story, I find him closer to being the hero of a Greek tragedy than a role model. Here we tell the first half of his story and how his life intersected with other major figures like King Helü of Wu and Sunzi, the author of "The Art of War."Support the show
Selfish ambition can be disguised as spiritual ability, though sinful people are used to accomplish God's sovereign purposes. Dr. James S. Robbins, IWP Dean of Academics, gave a lecture on "The Myths and Realities of the 1968 Tet Offensive" at IWP's campus in Reston, VA on April 13, 2023. This lecture is part of the Asia Initiative Lecture Series, organized by IWP's China/Asia Program. About the Lecture: Most of what Americans have heard about the Tet Offensive is wrong. That the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces were handily defeated was considered immaterial by the press; that it could mount attacks at all was deemed a military triumph for the Communists. This persistent view of Tet is a defeatist storyline that continues to inspire America's foreign enemies and its domestic critics of the use of force abroad. James S. Robbins provides an antidote to the flawed Tet mythology still shaping the perceptions of American military conflicts against unconventional enemies and haunting our troops in combat. In his re-examination of the Tet Offensive, Robbins analyzes the Tet battles and their impact through the themes of terrorism, war crimes, intelligence failure, troop surges, leadership breakdown, and media bias. The result is an explosion of the conventional wisdom about this infamous incident, one that offers real lessons for today's unconventional wars. Without a clear understanding of these lessons, we will find ourselves refighting the Tet Offensive again and again. About the Speaker: Dr. James S. Robbins is a national security columnist for USA Today and Senior Fellow in National Security Affairs at the American Foreign Policy Council. Dr. Robbins is a former special assistant in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and in 2007 was awarded the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joint Meritorious Civilian Service Award. Wally Bressler hit rock bottom and ended up in federal prison. He was honest enough to own up to the pain and lack of self-acceptance that got him there, and this was ultimately his path to freedom and happiness. In this episode, Wally teaches how to eliminate the victim mentality, which he describes as the root of our suffering. Stick around as Wally shares an exercise to help you pull up the roots of any unhappiness – with just a single note card. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: What is radical acceptance? The importance of being transparent with yourself The four quadrants of the Johari window Isolation versus common humanity How to get feedback from others Finding gratitude in recovery The power of unconditional love [03:27] What is Radical Acceptance? You may have made a lot of decisions you're not proud of, and as you go through those moments where you're experiencing pain, at some point, you'll have to accept it and take responsibility for it. You have to be willing enough to be transparent with yourself and other people. You've got to be willing enough to be transparent with yourself, and as you accept your feelings, and they become apparent, you can then start working on them. [21:28] The Power of Self-Compassion Self-compassion means giving yourself the same compassion you would offer to somebody else. In Kristin Neff's book, Self-Compassion, she cites the three elements of self-compassion, one of them is common humanity. The reason we isolate ourselves is because of shame. But once you learn to engage in common humanity and you start talking to people who have gone through what you've gone through, with similar emotions of shame and guilt, that can be so freeing. Then you realize you're not the only one going through that. [29:44] The Power of Unconditional Love The reason that unconditional love is the highest form of happiness and peace is that it's rooted in acceptance. Unconditional love means you accept somebody exactly as they are where they're staying with nothing to change. If you don't accept somebody for who they are, then there's no reason to keep them in your life. But if you're going to have a happy, peaceful, loving relationship with yourself and somebody else, and you want to get unconditional love, that means you accept all their goodness and faults. Notable quotes: [03:39] Where a lot of that pain comes from... is not accepting it and not owning it. [03:45] [21:28] Self-compassion is basically you giving yourself the same compassion you would offer to somebody else. [21:33] [29:44] The reason that unconditional love is the highest form of happiness and peace is… it's rooted in acceptance. Dear Family and Friends,This Sunday, we will conclude our series on the book of Judges by taking a closer look at the life of Samson. By many accounts, he is the worst of all the judges. His life is full of deception and scandal, and his moral failures are too many to count.A man chosen by God to deliver the Israelites from the Philistines… but yet he made a series of foolish choices with real life consequences. Four times across three chapters we are told that the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon Samson. But yet, he forgot where his true strength came from. It's tempting to read the story of Samson and think, what an idiot! But if we're honest, there are several elements to his life and story that can become all too familiar if we really pay attention to what is happening behind the scenes. Together, we will wrestle with several questions based on lessons from the life of Samson. Come and learn more about how the life of a Tragic Hero relates to our story in 2023.

Welcome to Star Wars English Class! This week, Julia and Fern introduce themselves, discuss the Star Wars English Class curriculum, and tackle a question that's been on their minds: is Anakin Skywalker a tragic hero? In this lesson, you will learn about the history of the tragic hero as Fern and Julia trace its roots from Greek and Renaissance tragedy to contemporary fiction. How do we define tragic heroism? To what extent does a tragic hero have agency over his fate? And how does Anakin Skywalker fit into this literary tradition? On the Syllabus:Sophocles, Oedipus Rex (c. 429 BCE) William Shakespeare, Hamlet (1600)Thomas Kyd, The Spanish Tragedy (1587)Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)“Antigone, Sophocles.” Youtube, uploaded by The Center for Hellenic Studies, 5 August2020, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSnfzgN7QfA&list=PLq5ea-jR9u2ojLpe4x3suBCx1eGuXwnL2&index=21Aristotle. “Poetics.” The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism: Second Edition, edited by Vincent B.
