Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Dobro master Rob Ickes joins me on the show this week. Rob was kind enough to drop in to the Henhouse to hang for a while, talk and even play a little bit. Rob is one of those players that is so good on one particular instrument that he's managed to carve out a really impressive career being dedicated to just one thing. And that one thing is the dobro, which is kind of a specific instrument - It's somewhat married to bluegrass music, but a very few players, and that list includes Rob and Jerry Douglas (and maybe one or two others), have managed to bring it to wider audiences through sessions and performances outside of that genre, while maintaining their standing at the highest level within it. Rob grew up in California, but moved to Nashville in the early 90's and really established himself as a pre-eminent player with a long stint in the acclaimed bluegrass band Blue Highway. He left the band in 2015 to focus on his duo with the incredible singer and guitarist Trey Hensley, who was on this show a couple of years ago. Rob's impressive session history includes working with artists like Merle Haggard, Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Charlie Haden, Dolly Parton, Allison Krauss, Little Feat, Patty Loveless and many more. And while the session world keeps calling, Rob has never wanted to solely become a studio player, so he keeps busy on the road as much as he can, and the duo with Trey is incredibly busy now. Their latest release as Rob and Trey is called “Living In A Song”. On top of all that, Rob continues to teach and run his successful “Resosummit” each year here in Nashville. You can get info on all of Rob's activities as well as his tour dates with Trey Hensley over at robickes.com - Enjoy my conversation with Rob Ickes! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Since their debut, Before the Sun Goes Down, in 2014, Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley have made a name for themselves as some of the hottest country and bluegrass players in the business. As individuals, their credits range from Willie Nelson to Earl Scruggs to Merle Haggard—and as a duo, they've toured and recorded with artists including Tommy Emmanuel, Taj Mahal, Jorma Kaukonen & Hot Tuna, Luther Dickinson, and Molly Tuttle. It's likely their forthcoming full-length release, Living in a Song, will only bolster their already impressive reputation.Out on February 10th, Living in a Song is a new collection of two covers and 10 originals that were inspired by Ickes and Hensley's life on the road. They collaborated with long-time producer Brent Maher (Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson) along with some award-winning songwriters to compose a total of 40 songs, which were then trimmed down to the resulting selection. That final cut of material leans into a classic country sound, with some Americana and bluegrass thrown in.Along with the aforementioned credits, Ickes and Hensley have long been established, separately, as formidable musicians. Ickes has been International Bluegrass Music Association Dobro Player of the Year an incredible 15 times, and Hensley made his debut performance at the Grand Ole Opry at just 11 years old. In other words, the two have been around the block, and especially know their way around dobros and flattop acoustics.Earlier this month, PG's John Bohlinger met up with the duo at 3Sirens Studio in Nashville, where they played some mind-blowing music, and gave a rundown of some of their favorite guitars and gear.Brought to you by D'Addario Humidipak.

John Prine utterly transformed the acoustic music community. His wit, spirit, and genius will be missed. So today, we're honoring John Prine by looking at 6 awesome John Prine covers. In addition, you'll get some bonus recommendations! All of these John Prine covers are performed by incredible musicians. Some may not seem like they drew inspiration from John Prine, but they absolutely did...especially after seeing these covers performed. The first John Prine cover is "Paradise" performed by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. This cover is beautiful and sincere. Huge thanks to Roger Waters for sharing this with the world. If you like that song, there are a few other musicians who have covered it. Darell Scott & Tim O'Brien, Dwight Yoakam, and Johnny Cash have all put out covers of "Paradise." Each one of these John Prine covers provides a different take and interpretation of the song, proving how multi-faceted Prine's music was. The second John Prine cover is "Hello in There" performed by Joan Baez. The more I listen to "Hello in There," there more the emotional weight hits me. Specifically, this cover by Joan Baez is so beautiful. In fact, it's one of her most requested songs when she plays concerts! If you like this song and want to see the full range of influence John Prine had, check out the covers by David Allan Coe, 10,000 Maniacs, and Jefferey Foucault. The third John Prine cover is "Sam Stone" performed by John Paul White. While this specific cover I feature in Acoustic Tuesday, I broke my rule of keeping to tribute covers. However, I think this cover just cannot be ignored. John Paul White is an incredible singer who captures the haunting, troubling essence of this incredibly well-told story. For other covers of this tragic John Prine song, check out Swamp Dogg, Bob Gibson, and (again) Johnny Cash. Interestingly enough, Johnny Cash actually had trouble with some of the lyrics in the song, so be sure to watch the video to catch that! The fourth John Prine cover is "Souvenirs" covered by Trey Hensley. I'm always excited when I have the chance to hear Trey Hensley sing. His cover of "Souvenirs" highlights both his excellent voice and John Prine's ability to do some next-level wordsmithing. For other covers of "Souvenirs" be sure to check out The Country Gentlemen's Recording and Steve Goodman's recording on the album Affordable Art. The fifth John Prine cover is "Angel from Montgomery" performed by Simon Flory. Simon is a friend of mine from a while back, and he had a great story tied to this song. What I like about Simon's cover is that it is authentic, raw, and real. Funny enough, Simon was also a featured artist back on Acoustic Tuesday #91. If you like this song, definitely check out the Bonnie Rait cover, as well as John Denver's and Susan Tedeschi's covers. The final John Prine cover I want to feature is "Unwed Fathers" performed by Sarah Jarosz. This specific cover is super awesome because, for starters, I love Sarah's voice. I also dig the octave mandolin. It definitely has a unique tone! You can really here the care and attention she puts into this song, so thanks for sharing it with us Sarah! ROB ICKES AND TREY HENSLEY are a powerhouse acoustic duo that has electrified the acoustic music scene. Rob is a 15-time IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Dobro Player of the Year and Trey a Tennessee-born guitar prodigy who made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11. White-hot picking and stone country vocals are still the driving force of the duo, but now with added grit and a nod to the rootsier side of Americana. Their new Compass Records album is ‘World Full of Blues’. LARRY CAMPBELL & TERESA WILLIAMS have been called “The First Couple of Americana” (Mojo). Multi-instrumentalist-singer-songwriter Larry Campbell and singer-guitarist Teresa Williams’ acclaimed eponymous 2015 debut, released after seven years of playing in Levon Helm’s band – and frequent guesting with Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Phil Lesh, Little Feat, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassady, brought to the stage the crackling creative energy of a decades-long offstage union. A whirlwind of touring and promo followed, and when the dust cleared, the duo was ready to do it all again on ‘Contraband Love’, their new album on Red House Records and a riskier slice of Americana. WoodSongs Kid: Duncan Stiit is a fifteen-year-old award-winning dobro player from Knoxville, Tennessee.

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest this month is the phenomenal guitarist, singer and songwriter Trey Hensley. Trey has been burning it up the last few years with dobro maestro Rob Ickes in their aptly-named duo Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley. Hensley grew up in East Tennessee and started singing in a gospel group when he was 6 years old. A few years later, his parents took him to a bluegrass festival where the lineup included back-to-back sets by bluegrass legends Charlie Waller and Jimmy Martin. Hensley decided then and there that he wanted to play guitar. By the time he was 11, he had given the life-changing first performance on the Grand Ole Opry playing guitar with Earl Scruggs and Marty Stuart. Trey had some incredible experiences with Johnny Cash and Tom T Hall making solo records as a youngster, but really came into his own when he teamed up with Ickes and they started making their duo records, which are essentially acoustic, but they veer into electric territory at times too, and I think there’s more electric fun on the horizon with these two. Their last record was nominated for a Grammy, and their brand new album “World Full of Blues” is a killer recording that features guest appearances by Vince Gill and Taj Mahal. But it’s Rob and Trey’s stellar playing that holds it all down, and shows they are one of the most adventurous musical duos out there. They tour constantly, so be sure to go check them out when they come to a venue near you. Trey was kind enough to drop by The Henhouse and hang for a good while to talk about all of his experiences and play some killer guitar for us as well! Enjoy my conversation with Trey Hensley, and don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast, and join us on social media!

Most guitarists have seen a StringBender installed on a Telecaster at some point. But on an acoustic? That’s a pretty wild concept. On this week’s podcast, we talk to two of the finest flatpicking guitarists around - Trey Hensley & Chris Luquette – about the StringBenders that will soon be installed as an upgrade option on Preston Thompson Guitars. These two Thompson artists talk about the feel of a StringBender-equipped dreadnought, describe how it changes their playing and much more. Midway through the call, we patch in the one-and-only Gene Parsons, the device's storied inventor. He tells us how the StringBender was developed (thanks to Clarence White's inspiration) and even lets us know about a rather historic Martin D-18 that now has a StringBender installed in it.
