On today's show is Missy Raines, one of the great bluegrass bassists out there, not to mention a fabulous singer and songwriter. Bluegrass bass playing is a funny thing - on the surface it seems simple. But there's a whole other level to it, and when you hear someone like Junior Huskey do it, or Mike Bub, or Dennis Crouch, or Missy Raines, they all play at that level. There's a way the really good players place their notes, there's the tone, and it all comes down to the bed that the bass players lay for the other players in the band to live in. And that's the hard part. Once you get a chance to play with someone of that calibre it becomes much clearer what great bassist brings to the table, and Missy is one of the best. She's been releasing albums under her own name since 1998, and her latest recording just came out a couple months ago - it's called “Highlander” and it's a killer record that features her band Allegheny as well as guests like Kathy Mattea, Michael Cleveland, Darol Anger, and Rob Ickes. Missy is from West Virginia, and she was lucky enough to grow up in an area that had a strong bluegrass scene that she got to experience first hand. She's lived in Nashville for a long time now, and is on the road alot these days. She's won multiple IBMA awards for Bass Player of the Year, and has performed with legends like Mac Wiseman, Peter Rowan and Josh Graves. Aside from her accomplishments in the bluegrass world, Missy swerved over into more experimental territory a few years back and had a band going called The New Hip, who made a couple of incredible records well worth checking out as well that feature her songwriting in a less traditional context. But these days she's pretty focussed on traditional bluegrass and has one of the best bands on the scene, so make sure you go see them if they come through your area. Dobro master Rob Ickes joins me on the show this week. Rob was kind enough to drop in to the Henhouse to hang for a while, talk and even play a little bit. Rob is one of those players that is so good on one particular instrument that he's managed to carve out a really impressive career being dedicated to just one thing. And that one thing is the dobro, which is kind of a specific instrument - It's somewhat married to bluegrass music, but a very few players, and that list includes Rob and Jerry Douglas (and maybe one or two others), have managed to bring it to wider audiences through sessions and performances outside of that genre, while maintaining their standing at the highest level within it. Rob grew up in California, but moved to Nashville in the early 90's and really established himself as a pre-eminent player with a long stint in the acclaimed bluegrass band Blue Highway. He left the band in 2015 to focus on his duo with the incredible singer and guitarist Trey Hensley, who was on this show a couple of years ago. Rob's impressive session history includes working with artists like Merle Haggard, Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Charlie Haden, Dolly Parton, Allison Krauss, Little Feat, Patty Loveless and many more. And while the session world keeps calling, Rob has never wanted to solely become a studio player, so he keeps busy on the road as much as he can, and the duo with Trey is incredibly busy now. Their latest release as Rob and Trey is called “Living In A Song”. On top of all that, Rob continues to teach and run his successful “Resosummit” each year here in Nashville. You can get info on all of Rob's activities as well as his tour dates with Trey Hensley over at robickes.com - Enjoy my conversation with Rob Ickes! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Do 1963 roku. Jedno z najsłynniejszych, to “Let the Mermaids Flirt with Me”. A muzyka? Muzykę zaczerpnął John z innej piosenki. To kolejny przebój amerykańskiego folku. „Waiting For The Train” Jimmi Rodgers napisał i nagrał w 1929 roku. W tym samym roku Rodgers wystąpił w filmie wyprodukowanym przez Columbia Pictures, w którym śpiewał „Waiting For The Train”. Był to w zasadzie jeden z pierwszych teledysków muzyki counrty. Wracając do korzeni piosenki, pierwowzorem podobno była londyńska ballada z połowy XIX wieku „Standing For The Platform”. Twierdzą, że Rodgers był zainspirowany amerykańską folkową piosenką z końca XIX wieku „I've been Working on the Railroad”. Podobieństwa faktycznie są, więc może… Sail-Ho Audycja zawiera utwory: “Waiting For A Train” (w tle), wyk. Raul Malo, Pat Flynn, Rob Ickes, Dave Pomeroy, muzyka: Jimmy Rodgers „Parostatek” , wyk. Since their debut, Before the Sun Goes Down, in 2014, Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley have made a name for themselves as some of the hottest country and bluegrass players in the business. As individuals, their credits range from Willie Nelson to Earl Scruggs to Merle Haggard—and as a duo, they've toured and recorded with artists including Tommy Emmanuel, Taj Mahal, Jorma Kaukonen & Hot Tuna, Luther Dickinson, and Molly Tuttle. It's likely their forthcoming full-length release, Living in a Song, will only bolster their already impressive reputation.Out on February 10th, Living in a Song is a new collection of two covers and 10 originals that were inspired by Ickes and Hensley's life on the road. They collaborated with long-time producer Brent Maher (Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson) along with some award-winning songwriters to compose a total of 40 songs, which were then trimmed down to the resulting selection. That final cut of material leans into a classic country sound, with some Americana and bluegrass thrown in.Along with the aforementioned credits, Ickes and Hensley have long been established, separately, as formidable musicians. Ickes has been International Bluegrass Music Association Dobro Player of the Year an incredible 15 times, and Hensley made his debut performance at the Grand Ole Opry at just 11 years old. In other words, the two have been around the block, and especially know their way around dobros and flattop acoustics.Earlier this month, PG's John Bohlinger met up with the duo at 3Sirens Studio in Nashville, where they played some mind-blowing music, and gave a rundown of some of their favorite guitars and gear.Brought to you by D'Addario Humidipak.

How do you learn a new song? Where do you begin and how do you set yourself up for success? On this episode, I'll show you how to break any song down into five essential guitar skills. Learning a new song is a daunting process. There are so many elements of a song to consider. From determining the style you need to play to the technical aspects of soloing and improvising. By using this simple framework, you can establish a starting point for learning a song. Rather than focusing on a song note for note, this step-by-step guide gives you a plan. When you focus on these specific categories, the easier learning songs becomes. Instead of being caught of guard by a tricky technique or feeling overwhelmed by the shear amount of music you have to learn and memorize, breaking a song into manageable categories is an easy way to learn it. Dave was elected to a three-year term as President of the Nashville Musicians Association, AFM Local 257 in December 2008. Interview With A Bible Believer: Andy Leftwich Part 1 My sins were forgiven and my soul was saved in 2010 when I made the ever-important decision to trust in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. From that time until now, the Lord has allowed me to meet many incredible people within the Bible-Believing world. Not least of which is Andy Leftwich. He is a child prodigy who went on to play the fiddle professionally from a very young age. Eventually, the Lord began to deal with his heart regarding his faithfulness to the Lord. Andy made some very difficult decisions, decisions meant to please God rather than man. To those of you with great musical talent, I pray this interview will greatly encourage you and help you in your service to Jesus Christ. “Is The Same Old Train… Just A Different Time”. Allí estaba “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” para nuestro disfrute. Bajo el título de "Honky Tonk Angel's Medley" pudimos escuchar “In The Evening When The Sun Goes Down”, “You Nearly Lose Your Mind” y “Blues Stay Away From Me”. ROB ICKES AND TREY HENSLEY are a powerhouse acoustic duo that has electrified the acoustic music scene. Rob is a 15-time IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Dobro Player of the Year and Trey a Tennessee-born guitar prodigy who made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11. White-hot picking and stone country vocals are still the driving force of the duo, but now with added grit and a nod to the rootsier side of Americana. Their new Compass Records album is ‘World Full of Blues’. LARRY CAMPBELL & TERESA WILLIAMS have been called “The First Couple of Americana” (Mojo). Multi-instrumentalist-singer-songwriter Larry Campbell and singer-guitarist Teresa Williams’ acclaimed eponymous 2015 debut, released after seven years of playing in Levon Helm’s band – and frequent guesting with Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Phil Lesh, Little Feat, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassady, brought to the stage the crackling creative energy of a decades-long offstage union. A whirlwind of touring and promo followed, and when the dust cleared, the duo was ready to do it all again on ‘Contraband Love’, their new album on Red House Records and a riskier slice of Americana. WoodSongs Kid: Duncan Stiit is a fifteen-year-old award-winning dobro player from Knoxville, Tennessee.

My guest this month is the phenomenal guitarist, singer and songwriter Trey Hensley. Trey has been burning it up the last few years with dobro maestro Rob Ickes in their aptly-named duo Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley. Hensley grew up in East Tennessee and started singing in a gospel group when he was 6 years old. A few years later, his parents took him to a bluegrass festival where the lineup included back-to-back sets by bluegrass legends Charlie Waller and Jimmy Martin. Hensley decided then and there that he wanted to play guitar. By the time he was 11, he had given the life-changing first performance on the Grand Ole Opry playing guitar with Earl Scruggs and Marty Stuart. Trey had some incredible experiences with Johnny Cash and Tom T Hall making solo records as a youngster, but really came into his own when he teamed up with Ickes and they started making their duo records, which are essentially acoustic, but they veer into electric territory at times too, and I think there’s more electric fun on the horizon with these two. Their last record was nominated for a Grammy, and their brand new album “World Full of Blues” is a killer recording that features guest appearances by Vince Gill and Taj Mahal. But it’s Rob and Trey’s stellar playing that holds it all down, and shows they are one of the most adventurous musical duos out there. They tour constantly, so be sure to go check them out when they come to a venue near you. Trey was kind enough to drop by The Henhouse and hang for a good while to talk about all of his experiences and play some killer guitar for us as well! Enjoy my conversation with Trey Hensley, and don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast, and join us on social media!

Their new Compass Records album is ‘World Full of Blues'. LARRY CAMPBELL & TERESA WILLIAMS have been called “The First Couple of Americana” (Mojo). Multi-instrumentalist-singer-songwriter Larry Campbell and singer-guitarist Teresa Williams' acclaimed eponymous 2015 debut, released after seven years of playing in Levon Helm's band – and frequent guesting with Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Phil Lesh, Little Feat, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassady, brought to the stage the crackling creative energy of a decades-long offstage union. A whirlwind of touring and promo followed, and when the dust cleared, the duo was ready to do it all again on ‘Contraband Love', their new album on Red House Records and a riskier slice of Americana. WoodSongs Kid: Duncan Stiit is a fifteen-year-old award-winning dobro player from Knoxville, Tennessee.

That radio countdown never sounded so sweet. Not since our first night on WSM in October 2009 did the top of the show – with its shot of Rob Ickes dobro and our emcee’s stentorian voice proclaiming us on the air from the Edge of Music City – have so much electricity for me. Yes, I know we send a video feed of MCR out over the internet across much greater distances than the footprint of an FM signal. But in my opinion, radio will always be the most refined and exciting and substantial medium – the one that matches technology and content in the most timeless and spiritual way. I mean, think about it. The voices and instrumental sounds of Nashville’s finest musician and distinguished visiting talent went into microphones on stage, imprinting their nuances and truth onto a current of electricity. That signal went to a mixing board and then over an internet line to a studio in Murfreesboro where it was processed for broadcast and then sent a few more miles to a tower west of Percy Priest Lake where it was sent rippling across the land, reaching all of Middle Tennessee with rich analog fidelity. During the second set, I went out to listen in my car for a bit just to make sure it was real. After a number of months without that official radio home, we were back, and not on just any station, but a new Nashville-centric Americana station programmed by my friends and teammates, now known as WMOT/Roots Radio 89.5. It was a moving thing to hear. Such elaborate hardware deserves top quality software and our guest artists brought it on this night dedicated to previewing the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Festival and celebrating the 1927 Bristol Session, as updated on the double album Orthophonic Joy.
