In cancer, biomarkers are features of the tumor, such as a genetic mutation or the presence of a certain protein. These biomarkers affect how the cancer behaves. Doctors use the results of biomarker testing to make treatment recommendations. Several organizations, including the American Cancer Society and the LUNGevity Foundation, through the No One Missed campaign, are working to pass laws to require insurance coverage for biomarker testing for people with cancer. Joanna Fawzy Doran, CEO of Triage Cancer, discusses some of the issues people face getting biomarker testing covered by insurance and how the new laws are helping. Listen to the episode to hear Joanna talk about: which biomarker tests are less likely to be covered by insurance the insurance plans the laws do and don't apply to the options people have when a health insurance carrier denies coverage for a biomarker test deemed necessary by a doctor

Julie Mason Groob is a cervical and vaginal cancer survivor, living with persistent HPV, a diagnosis that began in 2012 shortly after her 27th birthday. In part 2 of my new series, Breast Cancer 101, Monica Fawzy Bryant, Esq. Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of Triage Cancer and Triage Health discusses the financial perils of a cancer or other life-threatening illness.  Triage Cancer is a national, nonprofit organization that provides free education on the legal and practical issues that may impact individuals diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers, through events, materials, and resources.   Because these all apply to everyone, Triage Health, was established to encourage anybody looking for financial, estate and insurance planning to visit the site for information.   We talked about the parts of a diagnosis that doesn't come up in the doctor's office, employment, insurance coverage and personal finances; all can impact your care.   Just as you are advised to gather all of your medical information about treatment, doctors and hospitals, you should also collect your insurance policies, job leave policies and income sources.  Make sure that your treatment plan is covered by your insurance, look beyond your doctor and hospital, also consider labs, imaging, infusion sites and other providers.  Are they covered?    She discussed job protections, noting many want or need to continue working during treatment.  Disclosing a diagnosis is a personal decision, but there are job protections in the Affordable Care Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act for employees at larger companies or at government jobs.      Ms Bryant also encourages everyone – from age 18 on – to have an estate plan.  It's a fact of life, she notes, we all will eventually pass.  Having a plan for your healthcare decisions and your estate should be a priority for us all.  Triage offers worksheets and forms for all fifty states to help with the process.   While planning ahead for a life-threatening or chronic disease is difficult, she advises us to consider total costs when choosing insurance, instead of choosing only by the monthly cost, look for the lowest yearly cost by adding the monthly premiums and the maximum out-of-pocket cost.  While the ACA is not comprehensive, it does prevent you from being denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions so you can shop around at enrollment time. Triage Cancer's free educational materials can help you navigate legal and practical issues that arise after a cancer diagnosis like health insurance, finances, disability insurance, work and cancer, estate planning, and more.   Services are free to the public and offered in short videos, checklists and webinars.    Learn more at TriageCancer.org and TriageHealth.org

It wasn't even two weeks into the new year when the Food and Drug Administration made their first FDA approval. In this case, it was a Keytruda regimen for certain patients with gynecologic cancers. We at CURE® spoke with an the primary investigator on the study leading to the approval about what patients need to know about the latest new indication.  Also last week, we highlighted the Lymphedema Treatment Act and spoke to an expert about the new law.  Another story in the regulatory space: the FDA granted a Fast Track designation to speed up the review of a novel drug used to treat patients with relapsed or refractory CLL or SLL.  Finally, research from the American Cancer Society showed that Medicaid expansion states tended to have improved post-surgical outcomes in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.   Keytruda Plus CRT Offers ‘Better Chance of Cure' in Advanced Cervical Cancer The Food and Drug Administration has granted approval for Keytruda (pembrolizumab) in combination with chemoradiotherapy for the treatment of stages 3 to 4A cervical cancer, marking the first approval of an anti-PD-1 therapy with chemotherapy for this patient population and the third FDA approval for treating cervical cancer with Keytruda.  This week, I spoke with Dr. Linda R. Duska, a gynecologic oncologist and principal investigator on the study leading to the approval, who discussed the KEYNOTE-A18 trial, which enrolled 1,060 patients and demonstrated a 30% decrease in progression for those receiving the combination of Keytruda and chemotherapy. The overall survival data is not yet mature, but the treatment showed a 41% reduction in the risk of disease progression or death. While Dr. Duska emphasized that cervical cancer is preventable thanks to a safe and effective vaccine, she said that for patients with the disease, this new regimen is particularly exciting.  January is also Cervical Cancer Awareness month, so definitely stay tuned to curetoday.com for more of our coverage on the disease.  Medicare Must Now Cover Lymphedema Treatment Garments The Lymphedema Treatment Act, signed into federal law on Dec. 23, 2022, is now in effect as of Jan. 1, 2024, allowing Medicare coverage for doctor-prescribed compression supplies for patients experiencing. The bill encompasses standard and custom-fitted gradient compression garments and other approved items prescribed by healthcare professionals to treat lymphedema. Now basically what that means is that patients insured by Medicare Part B can now have their lymphedema garments covered by insurance.  This coverage is expected to ease financial burdens on patients, especially as these garments can be expensive.  I spoke with Joanna Fawzy Doran, CEO of Triage Cancer, who emphasized the importance of patient and provider awareness about coverage rights, appealing denials and navigating the process. Although the law does not mandate private insurers to cover compression sleeves for lymphedema patients, Doran noted that Medicare's coverage sets a precedent for broader access in the future. FDA Grants NX-5948 Fast Track Designation for R/R CLL, SLL The FDA has granted Fast Track designation to NX-5948, a novel drug, for adults with relapsed or refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia or small lymphocytic lymphoma who have previously undergone two lines of therapy, including a BTK inhibitor and a BCL2 inhibitor.  Fast Track designation aims to expedite the development and review of drugs addressing serious conditions with unmet medical needs.  NX-5948 is currently in a Phase 1a/1b clinical trial, with initial findings presented at the 2023 American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual meeting indicating safety, tolerance, and clinical activity. The drug showed no dose-limiting toxicities or treatment-related side effects leading to discontinuation, and the most common side effects were purpura/contusion, nausea, and thrombocytopenia.  Medicaid Expansion May Decrease Early Mortality in Some With NSCLC States with Medicaid expansion tended to have a significant decrease in early, postoperative mortality from non-small cell lung cancer, according to recent research.  The research focused on nearly 15,000 patients undergoing surgery for NSCLC, with 62.1% residing in states supporting Medicaid expansion. The study found notable reductions in 30-day and 90-day postoperative mortality in patients with stages 1, 2, or 3 NSCLC in expansion states. Patients in non-expansion states were found to be younger, non-Hispanic Black, uninsured, and with comorbidities.  The study also evaluated changes in early mortality before and after the Affordable Care Act (ACA) implementation, showing a decrease in the 30-day mortality rate in expansion states from 0.97% to 0.26% after the ACA. Now, advocates, including the American Cancer Society, continue to emphasize the importance of expanding Medicaid eligibility to improve health outcomes.  For more news on cancer updates, research and education, don't forget to subscribe to CURE®'s newsletters here.

Cancer has always seemed like such a scary thing to talk about. As if just consuming content about it would somehow make me more likely to develop it. Now obviously that thought is absurd, but what is WAY crazier is how our lives can be dictated by for profit companies after we do get a cancer diagnosis. My guest today is Monica Bryant. Monica is a lawyer and ex-congress employee who now focuses her time and energy on being a Cancer Rights  Attorney and Co-Founder of the non-profit "Triage Cancer". She's here today to show us just how little the we understand about a system we put our money and trust into. Sorry to the international audience that this is quite United States centered, but I think you'll actually enjoy it more after hearing all the issues you don't have to deal with. I told you it would be a different kind of spooky for Halloween! Let's learn our rights in this almost cartoonish healthcare system! Please take a brief moment to rate the show five stars on iTunes, Spotify, or Audible.  The only way to help this show grow is to get new listeners, so do your part by telling other people that you enjoy the podcast. I'm always looking for new topics, guest ideas, and questions from the audience. To reach out to me email DumbEnoughPodcast@Gmail.Com or send a message on any of the show pages on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or wherever else.  The October rankings are now finalized: 1. United States, with California and Oregon as the top states. 2. Australia, with New South Wales pulling ahead in the last days. 3. The United Kingdom. 4. Canada, with top province Alberta way out in front. 5. Sweden, with Vastra Gotland squeaking out a last minute victory. I'll see you all on Thursday for an episode to get your over that next hurdle in life. You've got this and I'm behind you all the way!

Compile all of the information you need, then act." For instance, do you want to walk into your job right away and tell your boss that you have cancer? Maybe so, and maybe no. Triage Cancer is a non-profit organization that provides education and resources on the entire continuum of survivorship issues for survivors, caregivers, and healthcare providers because cancer touches the entire community.
