This week our hosts are discussing Chelsea's second favorite fantasy topic: Pirates. While Chelsea's love for dragons will never be topped, her love for pirates will fuel her sass for years to come. Tricia Levenseller delivers another masterpiece with Daughter of the Pirate King, the first book in the Daughter of the Pirate King duology. This story follows Alosa, the daughter of the pirate king (surprise!), as she purposely gets captured in order to locate a magic map that will guide her to the secret island of the sirens. This book is full of amazing banter, swordfights, and magic. You won't want to miss it! Today my friend Sarah and I are chatting about Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller. This was the first book by Tricia Levenseller that I've read, and I loved it so much that now she is an automatic buy for me. Both Sarah and I devoured this book and its sequel. If you like pirates, this book is for you. It's like Pirates of the Caribbean but with a female lead. There's treasure hunting, greedy pirates, trickery, Siren's, a pirate romance, and more! You won't want to miss this fantastic story!First 15 minutes are spoiler FREE!A little about Daughter of the Pirate King: Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map―the key to a legendary treasure trove―seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship. More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.Check out Sarah's InstagramHave a question about Daughter of the Pirate King? Alessandra is determined to get what she rightfully deserves. She has been in her sister's shadow long enough, and now it's her time to shine. All she has to do is make the Shadow King fall in love with her, marry him, and then kill him to take over the kingdom. What seems to be an easy feat is more of a challenge. There's a law that prevents anyone from touching the king, and the penalty is death. Alessandra will have to win his affection without touching him for her plan to work. On top of that there is a murderer loose in the castle who strives to take over the kingdom as well. Will Alessandra accomplish her goal before the murderer takes everything away from her? Will she make the king fall in love with her without developing her own feelings? Join the Rosé Girls as we discuss The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller. Blade of Secrets By Tricia Levenseller Website: https://gobookmart.com "Blade of Secrets was an addictive page-turner. Loaded with action, betrayal, slow-burn romance―honestly, that is the best first kiss scene ever―I couldn't put it down. I fell in love with Ziva, her sister, and their very “interesting” companions. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and gasp." ― Mary E. Pearson, the New York Times-bestselling author of The Remnant Chronicles "Exciting, romantic, and filled with magic, BLADE OF SECRETS is a fast-paced journey through a fractured kingdom. Ziva is an amazing main character, with a gentle heart and a fierce need to do what's right, even in the face of incredible odds. This is a book you'll want to read right away―and then reach for that sequel." ―Jodi Meadows, New York Times-bestselling author of My Lady Jane and the Fallen Isles trilogy "Blade of Secrets is an impactful, eye-opening journey of social anxiety that is flawlessly blended with Levenseller's signature flair for adventure and romance. It's the best kind of story, inciting understanding and compassion while allowing the reader to escape reality." ―Bookstagram sensation Bridget Howard, @darkfaerietales_ "This fast-paced novel caters to popular romance and fantasy tropes while still feeling fresh, but it really shines in its portrayal of Ziva, who has an anxiety disorder... Readers will be craving not just the sequel but also more fantasy fiction that handle disabilities with this level of care." ― The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books (BCCB) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

Join the Ladies of Nerdtown in discussing their review of Daugther of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller.
Tricia Levenseller is the author of THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US (available now from Feiwel & Friends). It’s a young adult fantasy novel that’s been quite accurately described as a “Slytherin romance”. It follows the charming and cunning Alessandra, the second daughter of mid-level nobility, for years left to pursue her own lusts and liaisons while her favored older sister awaited a suitor. Now of age and availability to be brought to society, Alessandra has her sights set on a singular target — the elusive and mysterious Shadow King, a young ruler wrapped in living darkness. But Alessandra doesn’t just seek courtship — she desires nothing less than the throne and total control. She intends to steal the heart of the king — and then kill him — so she’ll have that throne all to herself. Because she isn’t just a confident and conniving would-be queen, she’s a murderer who killed her first love when he scorned her. But she’s not the only person at court who wants to assassinate the Shadow King, and winning his true affections is an entirely complicated matter on its own.

Tricia Levenseller is the author of the Daughter of the Pirate King duology and standalone Warrior of the Wild. She likes to describe her books as young adult alternate–world historical fantasies with heavy romantic subplots. One thing that a lot of new writers struggle with is writing a good fight scene that moves quickly and makes sense. In this episode, Tricia Levenseller breaks things down to give us ideas on what to pay attention to and how to make our fight scenes have an extra dash of awesome. Some things we mention on the podcast: Star Wars (movie series) The Winner's Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo Zombies Run (Mobile App) Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson The Swan Princess (Movie) The Harry Potter Series If you want to read the text of this week's submission, check out our website at https://litservicepodcast.wixsite.com/litnation/

Caitlin, Kristen, Cameron, Dan, and Tricia discuss how to make characters sympathetic (and why that's a thing you want to have happen), then critique a submission about a girl who isn't too fussed about super villians destroying her city.
We kick things off with Tricia Levenseller's elevator pitch for Daughter of the Pirate King. Tricia shares where she got the idea for Daughter of the Pirate King and what a typical day in the life of Tricia looks like. We find out what kind of writer Tricia is and what the (longgg) publishing process was like for her. Tricia lets us know about some of her research for the series, including a very interesting Pirate story! And she gives us plenty of deets about her research trip to the bahamas: We dish swoony AF Riden, the other characters, and the awesome banter in Daughter of the Pirate King. Tricia shares her favorite scene from the book. Spoiler: It's one of our favorites, too! We find out which character Tricia would love to introduce Alosa to, and we beg her to write fanfiction for this pairing! We play Two Truths and a Lie with Tricia. Which makes us love her even more. We find out what Tricia would include in a letter to her 17 year-old-self. Tricia talks about some of her favorite characters from other people's books, some of her most-loved underappreciated books, and gives us a glimpse into her TBR. Things take a crazy turn, and we start contemplating being #teamjames. Or nah. Tricia also really tortures Meg with the number of times she slips the "W" word into this episode. We wrap things up with a fun word association game.
