What is a Renocation, you might ask? Well, a Renocation is combining a vacation with a renovation, thought we would give a few tips on taking a Renocation. • Wouldn't it be nice to go on vacation and come home to a new Kitchen, Bath or some other home improvement you want? o You're not there during messy, noisy, potentially dangerous demolition. o You skip the chaos of workers going in and out of your house all day, drilling, hammering and creating fumes. o You don't have to deal with the inconvenience of not having a working kitchen, having water shut off periodically or entire rooms not being usable. o Workers can start work earlier and work later in the day, knowing they're not disturbing homeowners. o You avoid the urge to micromanage the project and constantly look over the shoulders of contractors. o Some projects, like a roof replacement, may be so disruptive that it's best to vacate the house anyway. o You come home to a finished project, and get the “Wow!” moment of seeing your renovated home for the first time. o • Reasons why you might not want to take a Renocation. Here are some potential downsides to being away while the work is done: • You'll come home to a mess, especially if there's no project manager supervising on your behalf. Your contractor isn't going to dust, sweep and vacuum for you. • Workers will make themselves at home in the owner's absence. Your bathroom will definitely get used and abused. Leave plenty of toilet paper behind! • You're never really “away” from the job site. While out of town, your phone will ring and ping constantly, with calls and messages concerning the work at your house. • Things can go wrong. Sheetrock went up before a few electrical outlets were in place. They had to add them after the fact and it delayed the completion time. • You might not get what you asked for. That gorgeous sage green paint you picked out for the guest bathroom might be mis-ordered, and you'll come home to chartreuse walls! • Vacations are expensive, and so are renovations. Combining the two may stretch your renovation budget beyond its limits. o • Tips for a Renocation. o Not applicable to all projects, o Good Contractors love when clients go on Renocation! o Find a Good Contractor o Be specific and have a strong plan o Have the ability to be contacted Watch us on YouTube (click here) Subscribe to our free newsletter, https://handymanprosradioshow.com/newsletter-signup/ Join our Facebook group @handyman pros Send us an email, questions@handymanprosradioshow.com.
You've probably heard of the term “lipstick on a pig.” In house-flipping parlance, it means doing basic cosmetic upgrades that camouflage the underlying issues beneath the paint and Sheetrock. California house flippers will have to put their makeup away and bring out the heavy machinery because a new law—Assembly Bill 968 (AB-968), effective July 1—mandates a comprehensive disclosure of repairs and renovations from sellers who flip one-to-four-unit properties within 18 months of buying them. The intent is to protect buyers from undisclosed and unseen property conditions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today we are rewinding and sharing a holiday episode we loved. We interview Jane Isay. She is the author of the book Walking on Eggshells, Navigating the Delicate Relationships between Adult Children and Parents. She is a New Yorker from birth and gets right to the point.Have you had enough togetherness during the holidays? "Shut the door," she says. How about when the kids come home, how to make them happy? "Give them the keys!"And, wait until you hear what she said about her son who was Chief of Staff for Chuck Schumer's first senatorial campaign. And just as a hint - it references Al D'Amato!!!! But there is lots more. Jane's bio is extraordinary. She's been an editor for over forty years. She discovered Mary Pipher's Reviving Ophelia, commissioned Patricia O'Connor's bestselling Woe Is I and Rachel Simmons' s Odd Girl Out, and edited such nonfiction classics as Praying for Sheetrock and Friday Night Lights. Sean 1) Hey fellas. Hope this finds you well. I've come into a work bench that needs some tlc. I'd like to rehab it if I can. It has a solid steel tube base (clearly store bought) with a butcher block style top that is 2'x4'. It's laminated strips of what I believe to be maple. (Sorry; my janka hardness test machine is on the fritz, but I can't dent it with a fingernail). It's got a significant bow from front to back (across the 24” dimension) of at least a 1/4”. Whats the best approach to flatten it? I'd like to save the thickness as it's about 1 1/2”. It doesn't need to be dead flat. It would be a secondary work area (aka a horizontal surface that collects all manners of various and assorted things. ) Thanks for all that you do and keep up the good work! Mark 2) Hey guys. Don't want you run out of questions, so here's another one: When and how often do you sharpen your hand tools? I don't really like sharpening and find myself going through chisels to find a sharp one and using that favorite plane although it's not sharp anymore because I'm telling myself that it's not worth it yet to get those stones wet. What's your balance? Should I just buy new tools when they are not sharp anymore? Just kidding, although I would love to. Jonas Guy 1) Hello gentlemen, love the podcast and I took your last advice to heart and have been staining some of my projects with polyurethane with great results. Thank you for the encouragement. My question today is on handling full 3/4" plywood sheets from the store to the shop. I have not built much carcass based projects as I've been a little too impatient to get everything square then find myself disappointed in the outcome. As I approach 6 decades on earth I find myself slowing down and enjoying the craft a little more leisurely instead of a to do list and punching a task list as complete approach. That being said I have built 2 projects now out of plywood starting with full 4 x 8 sheets and they have been fun challenges but I find myself not planning another project because of the challenges of getting a 4 x 8 sheet of 3/4 ply to my shop. It seems like plywood has gotten 1 pound heavier every year that I have aged. I enjoy solo working in the shop so it's not really easy to get somebody to help me go to the big box store and load a single sheet of plywood. I was wondering what are some of the tricks and tips you guys use for handling big heavy sheets. I use the foam board insulation as a backer when breaking it down into panels and I use a cheap cordless circular saw with a homemade fence. It's cheap and slow but that part works fine. I have one of the handle things that you hook under the plywood to carry it with a handle but that doesn't make the panel any lighter. I do have a utility trailer so hauling it isn't a problem. Any other other tips, tricks or tools you would recommend for heavy sheet goods? Thanks 2) Hey there, OK so this is a pretty simple question but you did say you need some so… I have a Delta 14” bandsaw, pretty typical and I have had it for about 35 years (holy cow, I just realized how old I am!). Anyway, its pretty basic, and lacks any feature to keep the tires from gumming up as I am cutting. Do you have any advice on devices, brushes etc. that I can add to keep them cleaner as I use the saw? I do connect a shop vac to the dust port, that helps but I still find I have to scrape the wheels. Using you instead of google or Pinterest for this one ;) Huy 1) Hi guys, I recently had a walnut tree taken down, brought the log to a sawyer and they cut into 4/4, 8/4, and 12/4 boards. I cannot air dry the boards on my property so I am planning on drying them in my basement. My basement is dry, and of course little to no air movement. After about a year, I am considering completing the drying process by putting the boards in the attic above my garage. There is Sheetrock under the rafters in the attic, so there will be very little air movement again. Should I be concerned with the heat in the attic adversely impacting the boards when they are not completely dry. I live in CT so the attic can get well over 100 degrees in the summer. Thanks for any word of wisdom you might have, Mike Gitberg 2) Hey guys I've got a door construction question for you. I've been tasked with making an extra large sliding barn door for my house. The door will need to be 8' 10" tall by 48" wide by 1.75" thick. The kicker is my shop is in the basement and I can't fit that large of a piece up the stairs. I have an empty room on the 1st floor that I can assemble and possibly use a vacuum press. My thoughts were to make an outer frame(walnut) with a torsion box interior made from 1/2" ply or possibly 1/4 ply and filling the void with rigid foam. I was going to skin each side with 1/4" MDF and then veneer each side with commercial 3/32 walnut veneer. Some of the issues I think I will run into. This would require a 6'x10' vacuum bag (which I would have to make), I'm not sure if my pump can pull a bag that large down and hold. I have a 3 cfm and according to Joe woodworker a max size for that pump is 4'x9'. After I've pressed the veneer down I have some clean up and and sanding to do, which I'm not fond of doing this on the 1st floor. Also there's finishing which my only option is a hard wax if I finish it inside. Or carry the damn thing outside and spray under a pop up tent. I've been thinking of instead of one large panel making a series of say 3 horizontal panels pressing and finishing them in the shop, sanding and pre-finishing then and then installing them to the frame with some sort of 1/16" shadow line or maybe a brass inlay between each panel. Or do I just scrap the idea and find a garage to assemble, sand and finish in and bring it to the house for install. Granted this garage will not be climate controlled. I'm concerned about weight, I have a 200# max on the door hardware. I'm open to other ideas for assembly. Also I can't spilt the door into two separate ones, the opening will not allow a door to rest on either side of the opening. Thanks in advance for the advice and keep up the great work with the podcast!! Jesse
Sharing Insights Podcast: Exploring Permaculture, Homesteads, & Community in Costa Rica
Hello, and welcome back to the Sharing Insights Podcast. My name is Jason Thomas, and the adventure continues. If you've been following the first year of the podcast, you'll have noticed that I disappeared for a while. The last couple of months of 2021 handed me some massive life changes, and these first few months of 2022 have not only been about getting back on my feet, but have invited me into a co-creative collective that's giving my life here new purpose. The long and short of it is that I just left my farm and home of 12 years. I was pushing to make things happen in a way my land partners just weren't available for, and I wasn't able to go any further without their support. As difficult a decision as it was, I've packed my things and moved on to a more co-creative environment. In the end, I've welcomed the change and have already begun enjoying the fruits of being able to expand my spheres of influence in the region. I'm happy to say, although the podcast might have faded, it hasn't gone out! This episode is all about physical infrastructure. It's an exploration of some of the unique techniques we saw in our first season of interviews. It'll be a shorter episode, given that there's only so much I can tell you in audio format to describe what you'll be much better off watching on our YouTube channel. All the same, I'll go over some highlights to help entice you in that direction. I'll start off with our visit to Brave Earth. In the farm tour that Aly Kahn gave me, we saw an array of different building techniques they've been working with, from cob to bamboo, to earthen floors to copper-edged fibrolite, aircrete domes, faux-palm-thatched rooves, and more. I enjoyed seeing how each iteration of each construction method they've experimented with, grows with successive adaptations. An interesting note is that, while they began with using quite a bit of cob & bamboo combinations in their earlier structures, they've been choosing to use cob less as time's gone on. For those who aren't familiar with the word “cob”, it refers to a construction style that uses a mix of clay and sand, similar to what's used to make adobe bricks. As beautiful as cob is, and as abundantly available the clay is, in most parts of Costa Rica, the reason they've been more selective about their use of it is that they quickly learned how much time and labor cob construction can take, as compared with most other materials choices. One fascinating material that we got to see was aircrete. As described on https://diyaircrete.com: “AirCrete is a lightweight cement-based material that contains stable air cells uniformly distributed throughout the mixture. It utilizes a stable air cell rather than a traditional aggregate. It is a minimum of 20% (per volume) foam entrained. It's also known as cellular concrete, foam concrete, foam-crete, lightweight concrete, aerated concrete.” Brave Earth had built 5 of these domes by the time of my visit. They connected with an organization called Dome Gaia that came out and organized several workshops. Those who attended the dome-making workshops learned the methods while working with them. Dome Gaia designed their own unique machines for mixing cement with biodegradable soap to create a kind of cement foam. This lightweight solid material has a surprisingly high compression strength. The structures are made in layers. Each layer is wrapped in an industrial-grade felt material, called geotextile, which is dipped in cement and wrapped over each aircrete layer to add tensile strength. This combination of techniques makes the structure nearly indestructible. Once the dome is shaped, a final layer of stucco is applied for aesthetics and water resistance. Aly Kahn recommends that the domes do best when they get a fresh coat of plaster every few years to protect them from leaks. Another building style they're using is an A-frame, which they call the “Jungle Hut”, made primarily out of bamboo, with some choice inclusions of synthetic materials for aesthetics and longevity. The first element of this that I noticed was the roofs. The A-frames, at first glance, look like they're made with palm thatch, which is beautiful but requires a lot of palm leaves to create and can require quite a bit of maintenance. It's generally advised to regularly burn a fire under thatched roofs so that bugs don't live in and eat them. Otherwise, you'll be replacing all that thatch every handful of years. The polycarbonate material looks just like palm leaves; offers the cooling and noise reduction benefits of not using metal, but can last several decades with little to no maintenance! Over the front porch of these A-frame cabins, they used some high-quality translucent polycarbonate roof panels to bring some light to it. The contrast of plastic against the natural look of the bamboo and thatch didn't quite look right, though. To modify it, they used a natural material called caña brava, which can be found abundantly down here. They strung them together into simple panels and placed them beneath the polycarbonate to add an organic feel to it. Very well done! The floors of the A-frames showed another simple innovation that impressed me. They chose to use sheetrock for the flooring, as the structures are all constructed on stilt-built platforms to avoid having to carve up the land, digging flat foundations. Sheetrock floors are relatively inexpensive to install but are usually pretty unattractive. The team at Brave Earth fixed this by cutting the sheetrock into angular pieces that formed a mandala shape, adding some thin pieces of wood where they meet, giving it an elegant and intentional look at a relatively low price. Brave Earth is designing art into its cabin sculptures at every opportunity. When you check out the video tour we did of their place, you'll see how designing irregularity into your structures can be a great way to enhance their beauty. Wait ‘till you see their kitchen! Justin Dolan is another guest who's given a lot of thought, planning, and experimentation to his building approach. St Michael's Permaculture Country Club has an array of different structures built, ranging from a double-decker shipping container home to bamboo framed greenhouses. Shipping containers are a popular upcycled shell of steel that many people are experimenting with to frame their homes. Justin mentioned that, while they do offer some cost savings from buying new steel, many of the containers available are in poor condition and need a lot of improvements to create a suitable end product. He also didn't like the limitations that it places on design. Depending on your needs they still might be a good solution for you, though. While building with steel can inherently leave you with a structure that can get quite hot, Justin has been using plant-based solutions that have proven to be impressively effective. Two of the adaptations he's applied are the use of living rooftops and growing vines along the walls. By covering these structures with soil, grass, flowers, and other lovely plant matter, the temperature in these structures is significantly reduced. He even has greywater from the house piped out to feed the vines that he has growing on the outside of the walls. Building structures partially into a hillside is another way to keep the temperature low. Another cooling feature that Justin's used is the tactic of putting a swimming pool in front of the house! He says that when the wind passes over the pool and toward the house, the water's surface reduces the wind temperature as it approaches and enters the home, cooling it by several degrees. It's also pretty epic to have a swimming pool out the front door, if I may say so. Of course, swimming pools generally need a lot of water. For that reason, Justin has a storage shed next to the house and pool, whose roof he uses to collect water into a large storage tank below the shed. What a great design! Once the tank is full, Justin has enough water to freshen up the pool. Like many of our guests, Justin is a big fan of bamboo, as well. He recommends, to any landowner, to plant several varieties and plant early! Building with bamboo enhances the quality of the environment. It's an ideal tropical building material. He also encourages us to choose insect-resistant woods to reduce the need to treat them. However, he also acknowledges the importance of treating the wood that needs it, to keep from having to replace it sooner than necessary. Nico Botefur and Ed Bernhardt are another couple of guests who use a lot of bamboo in their structures. Nico has a series of old canvas tents that he bought from the Salvation Army and put them over some bamboo frames to make his popular glamping rentals. Nico, for the most part, chooses not to treat his bamboo. He just makes sure that he has plenty of it planted all around. He prefers to build his structures in ways that make it easy for him to change the poles out when they begin to decay or get eaten by beetles. At the end of Ed's farm tour video, he mentioned a design for a solar food dryer made out of bamboo in a gothic-arch style. Well, he's finished it, and it is impressive! What's most impressive about it is how simple it was to build, and how hot it gets in there. He's invited me over to create a mini-course to show you how you can make one, too! Subscribe to the YouTube channel to catch the video when it comes out. Ed showed us another exciting innovation in his farm tour video worth mentioning here. He created a biosand filter just outside of his house to filter his drinking water, and it's SO simple! It's made with a 16” concrete culvert (or “canteria” in Costa Rica,) filled with rock dust (polvo piedra) up to about 16” from the top of the cylinder. He has an output tube that comes up only 12” from the top, so the sand remains covered in water at all times. Once a day, he fills the culvert with fresh water from his well, and it filters down through the rock dust and up through the exit tube, leaving it clean and fresh. Ed's neighbor Suzanna Leff also uses bamboo regularly but in very crafty ways, primarily for garden projects. One example is found in her greenhouse, where she hangs lengths of bamboo culms vertically, strung one under the other, with holes cut in the top to make horizontal growing space! Another one of her structures that we see in her farm Tour video, that actually caught me by surprise, was her drying house. I was impressed with how hot and dry it got in there, even during the rainy season. It's built with transparent roof panels but only has screen walls. Even without any humidity control, it seems to be very effective. (A veteran tip I'll slip in here is that Susanna recommends drying your roots with some dirt still on them. She says it helps preserve them for storage). Terry Lillian Newton dropped a clever word of wisdom for anyone who keeps livestock. She warns us not to use cement floors for horses or other hooved animals, as it can damage their feet. (I wish we knew this when we poured a cement floor for our goats, for easy cleaning.) She recommends using a dirt floor covered with wood chips. You can change them out regularly, and even use the enriched wood chips for garden mulch. Our last stop on our Season 1 tour was Lynx Guimond, and boy do I like his style! Lynx has a background in building tree platforms that appear to be minimalistic but are very well made, look fantastic, and are cozy to hang out in. It brings a lot of fun to the environment;, as well as style and function to the project. In the video tour of Sailcargo's homestead, we also got a glimpse of the sizable but simple greenhouse they built with a scrap wood frame, a transparent plastic roof, and shade cloth for walls. That's what I've got for you in this episode. Our next episode will be the completion of this recap series, where we'll explore some insights gathered around cultivating an impactful belief system. I'll also be making a long-awaited announcement regarding the future of the podcast. Be sure to stay tuned. Until then, Keep it sustainable! It's honestly pretty hard to get excited about drywall. Drywall is a subject that's kinda, well…dry. But drywall is a material that goes in just about every space of the house, so we want to be able to make informed decisions about what type of drywall we should request to make our walls last longer and perform better. I won't go into too much boring detail, but I'm hoping to give you enough information so you can have an intelligent conversation with your builder or drywall contractor, so you will know the best types of drywall for different areas of your house. Despite what you might think, all drywall isn't the same. SHOW NOTES AT BYHYU.com

Construction terms: Alicia's favorite – can you explain what these terms mean? What do stringer, riser and tread have in common? Is there a difference between drywall, Sheetrock and green board? Maintenance: Give your refrigerator some love. Along with cleaning the coils (check out this video) there are a few other things to check to keep it running efficiently. Door seal, temperature check for the fridge and freezer and keep it full all help for your unit to be more energy efficient. In today's episode we are joined by fantasy author JW Webb, chatting about his books set in the world of Anzu. Jim grew up close to London but it wasn't until he moved out to Cornwall when his first book came to life. He believes there is a great sense of the Celtic vibe living in that area of the UK. It was during this time he also reached out to an illustrator who, at the time, had worked with J.R.R. Tolkien as an illustrator. Unfortunately, tragedy hit JW's life when his wife passed away. In a wonderful turn of events, he reconnected with someone he had met in his youth while sailing around Australia. That new relationship led him to relocating to the United States in 2012. He is now putting the finishing touches on his 12th book in the ever-growing list of books set in the world of Anzu. Movies/Streaming: Walt is working his way through Futurama and began watching Lower Decks, the animated series set in the Star Trek universe. JW recommended Picard, Ozark, Yellowstone, Longmire, and The Bodyguard. Alan is wrapping up season 4 of The Next Generation and season 4 of Bosch. Alan also highly recommends the Netflix film, Extraction, starring Chris Hemsworth. Reading: Walt is still working his way through, "Praying for Sheetrock," and just finished reading, "Waiting for the Punch." JW just finished reading, "The Real History of the SAS." Alan recommends, "The Making of Tombstone," for anyone who considers themselves a fan of the movie. Listening to/Podcasts: Walt grabs his fresh supply of gummies and has been listening to The Grateful Dead from 1972. He also has a couple podcasts he really recommends; Holy Crap It's Sports with Pete Davis and Comedy, Bang, Bang. JW listens to the podcast Self Publishing 101 along with a lot of Kate Bush and Souxsie and the Banshees. Alan tried out Literally! The Rob Lowe podcast and has enjoyed the guests. He also recommended The Worst of the Best with Ryan Rebalkin, a show that looks at a "great" album or movie or whatever and then the hosts have to decided what is the worst part, moment or song. Alan also loves the podcast 60 Minutes With now rebranded as 60MW. He reminds the audience to watch for the next Soundcheck Metallica show he is going to be on with host Chris Jellyman. Their next episode with focus on the album, "Ride the Lightning." He also gave a shout out to The Real Queens of Queens podcast and The Bad Cop, Bad Cop Show.
When best buds Tom and Bedford set off to the quarry to pick up sheetrock for a home renovation project, the last thing they expected to find was a blossoming romance between Lola and the Rock Monster. However, the Rock Monster would soon learn that this budding romance wasn't so pure, as Lola's preconceived notions would soon come back to bite them. Hosted by: Margaret Stretch Guest starring: Amalia Aquino Starring: Rasheed, Steve Hanson, Bela Evans, Jeff Miner
In today's episode, we bring the husband and wife podcast team of Pete and Sandra Marchese to our Listeners Lounge. We learn a little bit more about them before diving into their show, breaking down the film Blade Runner, one minute of the movie at a time. We have a blast learning about how their show evolved and how they let more of their relationship filter into the episodes. We then invited them both to hang out and comment on some strange and funny news stories. We close the episode going though a round-up of what we are watching, reading and listening to. Movies and Streaming: Walt recommends the Netflix documentary, Fear City, diving into the history of organized crime. He finished the not-safe-with-kids Netflix show, The Norseman. He also gave two thumbs up to the final season of Star Trek: Voyager. Sandra finished the series, Motherland. She also enjoyed watching, The Cursed, on Netflix. Pete is in the midst of season two of Star Trek: The Next Generation. For laughs, he goes back and watches all three seasons of, Toast of London. Alan reminded everyone he is also going through TNG and is nearly done with season four. He also heartily recommends the movie, The Foreigner, with Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, currently streaming on Netflix. Alan is also streaming the cop show, Bosch, on Amazon Prime, finishing up season three. Books: Walt just completed, "The Game," by Ken Dryden about sports. He is reading another book that was recommended by a Georgia Supreme Court Justice called, "Praying for Sheetrock." Sandra is always reading three or four books at the same time. She is currently reading, "Tom Boy Land," and, "The Electric Air." Pete is midway through reading the Rutger Hauer biography, "All Those Moments." Podcasts and shout-outs: Walt suggested the show, "SmartLess," with Jason Bateman. Pete is listening to, "The Art of Manliness," and Sandra doesn't really listen to many shows. Alan reminded the audience of his work with the podcast "60 Minutes With" and the Soundcheck Metallica shows he is doing with Chris Jellyman. Alan also encouraged the audience to checkout, "The Blade Runner Minute."

Mendelson has made presentations at the National Automotive Dealers Association Conference, South By Southwest, Social Media Week: Chicago, The Do Lectures in the U.K., R.O.A.D. in Moscow, the Word of Mouth Marketing Association Summit, Social Media Explorer, and various other events to talk about the many myths peddled by social media marketers and what really works online and off. He appeared at the United Nations to debate the ambassador to Pakistan, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, about the effects of social media on society and its involvement in political revolutions. Mendelson has also appeared on MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, Yahoo! News, the CBC, TechCrunch, The Huffington Post, and numerous other national outlets to talk about these myths and who actually benefits from the hype. B.J. is also one-half of the creative team behind, “Vengeance, Nevada” and “A National Story of Minor Significance.” Both comics will soon be available through Amazon’s popular Comixology platform.

This Podcast Is Episode Number 0090 And It Will Be About Does QuickBooks Frustrate Your Construction Company? Does QuickBooks Frustrate You? If You Answered "Yes" You Are Not Alone! 99.99% of all QuickBooks Issues can be traced back to two root causes: 1. How QuickBooks setup was done originally2. How transactions are put into QuickBooks QuickBooks Makes Construction Accounting Look Simple As Microwaving Popcorn How many advertisements have you seen by Intuit, the maker of QuickBooks that makes it appear like accounting is so simple a five year old can do it. The truth is Intuit is a sales and marketing firm that sells and markets software. And QuickBooks is one of the big winners for them because it has removed a lot of the pain associated with accounting; but it is still accounting and certain principles still apply. For example "Debits" are on the left and when they are not we give them "Credit". When you write a check in QuickBooks you can impact up to 27 different tables and hundreds of reports which means in the end there are thousands of things that can go wrong. Even those of us with a deep background in accounting have known for years there are several things QuickBooks allows users to do which can lead them down harmful paths. One of the worst ideas ever in the history of QuickBooks is putting your bank and credit card account numbers inside QuickBooks. I suspect this was done in response to users asking for it. Don’t assume that QuickBooks will keep an uninformed bookkeeper or user for making mistakes and don't assume it will stop your from doing something that will cause financial harm to your construction company because it WON'T! Understand that QuickBooks is just a tool like a hammer is a tool and hammers do not know which nail to drive into which piece of wood. The problem is that bookkeeper not trained in construction accounting don’t know which nails to drive where inside QuickBooks so they just start “hammering” and causing untold damage. What happens too often is they open the box, load the program, and start using it without help or guidance. This works fine for small phone apps, games and programs, like Publisher because if you make a mistake in Publisher the damage is limited to only one file. You can see and immediately correct your mistake and it doesn't impact your taxes, job costing reports, obtaining a loan, or running your construction company! But if you or your contractors bookkeeper makes mistakes in your QuickBooks for Contractors file it might be months or years before anyone finds it and only then if they know what to look for in the financial and job costing reports to know if they are seriously wrong. Did someone setup QuickBooks by trying to follow the built in in template inside QuickBooks and you figured out you cannot get any of the financial and job costing reports you need to operate and grow your construction company? Proper QuickBooks Setup Is Your Treasure Map The Chart of Accounts Is The Foundation Of Your QuickBooks Setup - And if your QuickBooks setup was done by a QuickBooks Expert in construction accounting and maintained correctly you are riding high and living well! If not, we can fix just about any QuickBooks setup by performing a QuickBooks cleanup and importing all of the transactions into a fresh QuickBooks file that we have customized just for your construction company. We Perform QuickBooks Setup - Since we are QuickBooks experts in construction accounting and we work specifically for contractors on whatever year and version of QuickBooks you own. We have worked with QuickBooks since it first arrived in the early 1990's in DOS. Having used a number of accounting programs over the years we believe when your QuickBooks setup is done correctly is the best, hands down, no contest! For the construction trades the tiny amount of money difference between QuickBooks Pro and QuickBooks Premier Contractor Edition is worth the investment for the additional a Contractor Reports alone. Upgrading every year is a “no brainer” because of all the new features and if a contractor’s construction accounting staff only saves only 10 minutes a day the savings will more than pay for the program.Starting in 1991 we invested ten years to develop several customized QuickBooks setup templates and there have been thousands of improvements since then. We have QuickBooks setup templates for all of Construction Contractors shown below and more... construction company like yours may require more or less than what I am showing here and for some of you this was too much information. Our construction company clients offer a lot of feedback regarding what they would like their QuickBooks contractor to do and we listen to each and every request and look for ways to add those enhancements and more. On average each QuickBooks setup template will have 50 enhancements a year. We test them on our server and when they are proven to work we manually update each and every client that has their QuickBooks contractor file on our server. And then we test each update on every client QuickBooks contractor file to make certain it will work. Most of the time our clients do not even know when a template update happened, they just know it works a little bit better and something that was a problem no longer is a problem. The one BIG PROBLEM we caution you about is be careful when you tell another contractor about all the reports and how Fast And Easy your QuickBooks contractor works because in most cases they will not believe you. It is the difference between QuickBooks setup the easy way and QuickBooks setup the hard way!QuickBooks Setup - By a QuickBooks expert in construction accounting to work specifically for contractors on whatever year and version of QuickBooks you own because we have worked with QuickBooks since it first arrived in the early 1990's in DOS. Which QuickBooks Edition - Is right for you? It depends on your annual sales volume and what QuickBooks Reports you want to have.QuickBooks Pro - Works well for all contractors with less than $250,000 annual volume because yourQuickBooks Reporting needs are not great.QuickBooks Premier Contractor - Is what we recommend for contractors with more than $250,000 annual volume currently or projected in the next 12 months. The difference in cost is very small compared to the potential value. The Most Important - Part of QuickBooks Setup for contractors is having a QuickBooks expert with a deep background in construction accounting who understands what your particular construction company needs. Among other things you need a fast and easy way to monitor the financial health of your construction company. QuickBooks Premier Contractors Edition provides a running scorecard of Key Performance Reports and when used with Business Process Management Tools like what 10 minutes of waste costs their company. Five Types Of Construction Firms Need QuickBooks Setup On Premier Contractor Edition:New Construction Speculative - Land developers, home builders and light commercial builders. These are the contractors who build something in hopes a buyer will emerge during or shortly after the building is built and they need QuickBooks setup so that it will:1. Your QuickBooks setup is put together so you can track all your construction and overhead costs and generate Bank Draws and Work-In-Progress (WIP) reports against budgeted estimates to monitor progress.2. Your QuickBooks setup for your Chart of Accounts needs to be focused WIP Assets with a few Cost of Goods Sold Accounts (COGS) to allocate the sale of the building3. Your QuickBooks expert can setup the Five Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to monitor the financial health of the business4. You need between 200 and 6,000 Items setup to track all the costs of the construction process from the ground up through the roof and final cleanup5. This is the most difficult QuickBooks Premier Contractor Edition to setup because there is a mix of Direct, Indirect, WIP and COGS accounts6. The day to day input is also the most difficult and needs to be handled by accounting staff with specialized training in construction accounting7. You will need a simple yet effective way to keep track of retention and your QuickBooks expert in construction accounting can set it up to meet your needs8. Your income can be sporadic and extremely sensitive to the ups and downs of the new construction market which is why you need a strategy with an external focus on the global housing market. 9. In order for your Spec Builder Company to reach its full potential you will need an overall strategy including a Business Plan for Contractors10. We believe a lot of speculative builders go bankrupt because they do not have accurate reports to base decisions on and that is as direct result of trying to save money with Cheap Bookkeeping New Construction Custom - Builders of residential and light commercial buildings have special QuickBooks setup needs:1. You use QuickBooks to track all the costs and generate Complex Payment Applications, Item Estimates vs. Actuals, Job Profitability Summary and Job Profitability Detail Reports to monitor progress2. Your QuickBooks setup for the Chart of Accounts has a lot of Goods Sold Accounts (COGS) to allocate project costs3. Your QuickBooks expert can setup the Five Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to monitor the financial health of the business4. You will have between 500 to 2,500 Items setup to track all the costs of the construction process from the ground up through the roof and final cleanup5. This is the second most difficult QuickBooks setup is Premier Contractor Edition because there is a mix of Direct, Indirect, COGS and only a few WIP accounts6. The day to day accounting and bookkeeping input is the second most difficult and to be done properly requires accounting staff with specialized training in construction accounting7. You will need a simple yet effective way to keep track of retention and your QuickBooks expert in construction accounting can set it up to meet your needs8. Our experience has been your group generates a relatively unstable income and is somewhat sensitive to the ups and downs of the new construction custom built market9. In order for your Custom Home Building Company to reach its full potential you need a Construction Business Strategy including a Business Plan for Contractors10. We believe a lot of custom builders go bankrupt because they do not have accurate reports to base decisions on and that is as direct result of trying to save money with Cheap Bookkeeping Remodel - Residential And Light Commercial Tenant Improvement Contractors QuickBooks Setup:1. You use QuickBooks to track all the costs and generate Complex Payment Applications Item Estimates vs. Actuals, Job Profitability Summary and Job Profitability Detail Reports to monitor progress2. Your Chart of Accounts is focused Goods Sold Accounts (COGS) to allocate project costs3. You need the Five Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to monitor the financial health of the business4. Your QuickBooks setup will need 1,000 to 5,000 Items setup to track all the costs of the construction process from beginning to end in order to get the reports you need5. This is the third most difficult QuickBooks setup in Premier Contractor Edition because there is a mix of Direct, Indirect, COGS and only a few WIP accounts6. The day to day input is also the second most difficult and to be done properly requires accounting staff with specialized training in construction accounting7. You will need a simple yet effective way to keep track of retention and your QuickBooks expert in construction accounting can set it up to meet your needs8. Our experience has been your group generates a stable income and is not as sensitive to the ups and downs of the new construction market9. In order for you to reach their full potential of your business you will need an overall strategy including a Business Plan for Contractors10. And of course Cheap Bookkeeping is the one area where short term savings is overwhelmed by making bad decisions based upon inaccurate QuickBooks reports Trade contractors - QuickBooks Setup For Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC, Flooring, Sheetrock, Painters, Landscapers and others:1. You use QuickBooks to track all the costs and generate Simple Invoices which can then be input into QuickBooks Premier Contractor Edition2. Your QuickBooks setup for the Chart of Accounts is usually focused Goods Sold Accounts (COGS) to allocate project costs3. You will need to pay close attention to the Five Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to monitor the financial health of the business because your sales cycle is so short4. You will need 500 to 2,500 Items in your QuickBooks setup to track all the costs of the construction process from beginning to end5. This is the fourth most difficult QuickBooks setup is the Premier Contractor Edition because there is a mix of Direct, Indirect, COGS accounts6. Our construction company clients offer a lot of feedback regarding what they would like their QuickBooks contractor to do and we listen to each and every request and look for ways to add those enhancements and more. On average the QuickBooks setup template will have 50 enhancements a year. It is the difference between QuickBooks setup the easy way andQuickBooks setup the hard way! QuickBooks Setup - By a QuickBooks expert in construction accounting to work specifically for contractors on whatever year and version of QuickBooks you own because we have worked with QuickBooks since it first arrived in the early 1990's in DOS. Which QuickBooks Edition - Is right for you? It depends on your annual sales volume and what QuickBooks Reports you want to have. QuickBooks Pro - Works well for all contractors with less than $250,000 annual volume because your QuickBooks Reporting needs are not great. QuickBooks Premier Contractor - Is what we recommend for contractors with more than $250,000 annual volume currently or projected in the next 12 months. QuickBooks Premier Contractors Edition - Provides a running scorecard of Key Performance Reports and when used with Business Process Management Tools like what 10 minutes of waste costs their company. Five Types Of Construction Firms Need QuickBooks Setup On Premier Contractor Edition: New Construction Speculative - Land developers, home builders and light commercial builders. These are the contractors who build something in hopes a buyer will emerge during or shortly after the building is built and they need QuickBooks setup so that it will: 1. Your QuickBooks setup is put together so you can track all your construction and overhead costs and generate Bank Draws and Work-In-Progress (WIP) reports against budgeted estimates to monitor progress. 2. Your QuickBooks setup for your Chart of Accounts needs to be focused WIP Assets with a few Cost of Goods Sold Accounts (COGS) to allocate the sale of the building 3. Your QuickBooks expert can setup the Five Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to monitor the financial health of the business 4. You need between 200 and 6,000 Items setup to track all the costs of the construction process from the ground up through the roof and final cleanup 5. This is the most difficult QuickBooks Premier Contractor Edition to setup because there is a mix of Direct, Indirect, WIP and COGS accounts 6. The day to day input is also the most difficult and needs to be handled by accounting staff with specialized training in construction accounting 7. Your income can be sporadic and extremely sensitive to the ups and downs of the new construction market which is why you need a strategy with an external focus on the global housing market. 9. In order for your Spec Builder Company to reach its full potential you will need an overall strategy including a Business Plan for Contractors 10. We believe a lot of speculative builders go bankrupt because they do not have accurate reports to base decisions on and that is as direct result of trying to save money with Cheap Bookkeeping New Construction Custom - Builders of residential and light commercial buildings have special QuickBooks setup needs: 1. You use QuickBooks to track all the costs and generate Complex Payment Applications, Item Estimates vs. Actuals, Job Profitability Summary and Job Profitability Detail Reports to monitor progress 2. Having Used - A number of accounting programs over the years we believe when your QuickBooks setup is done correctly is the best, hands down, no contest! for the construction trades the tiny amount of money difference between QuickBooks Pro and QuickBooks Premier Contractor Edition is worth the investment for the additional a Contractor Reports alone. Upgrading every year is a “no brainer” because of all the new features and if a contractor’s construction accounting staff only saves only 10 minutes a day the savings will more than pay for the program. Our mission is to “Help Contractors Achieve Their Definition Of Success”. Which means we work with them and support them no matter what version of QuickBooks they use. We have observed contractors who use QuickBooks Premier Contractor Edition simply make more money. We Contract - With An Intuit Authorized Commercial Host company that allows us to access QuickBooks Desktop Version Online. The good news is they are great at providing 24/7 access to client QuickBooks files and nightly backup. The other news is that we need staff that is skilled in construction bookkeeping and accounting and other staff that is very experienced with Microsoft Windows Explorer File Structure because we have to upload, setup, monitor and maintain the QuickBooks data, paperless documents and internal file folders for each client. The great news is that from our client’s point of view everything just works fast and easy so they love it! It Is Like - Having a red carpet lease for your car. The manufacturer (Intuit) makes and sells the product and the contractor buys it (QuickBooks) parks it in our garage (Hosting Service) where our mechanics keep it tuned up and running smoothly (Microsoft Windows Explorer Specialists) and the chauffeurs (construction bookkeepers and accountants) drive the transactions and paperwork into it so the contractor can enjoy the ride (passenger) and generate useful KPI Reports anytime day or night and we help them understand and use the KPI Reports That is all I have for now and if you have listened this far please do me the honor of commenting and rating podcast www.FastEasyAccounting.com/podcast Tell me what you liked, did not like, tell it as you see it because your feedback is crucial and I thank you in advance. This week's episode of How Was Your Week digs deep, hits rock, then gets out the Sheetrock drill! First, FRANK CONNIFF is here to talk about Turner Classic Movies, Mystery Science Theater 3000, the title of that new movie where Helen Hunt plays a sexual surrogate, and the scariest part of The Wizard of Oz. Then, one of Julie's biggest crushes of all time, ANDREW McCARTHY joins her to discuss his new book, The Longest Way Home: One Man's Quest for The Courage To Settle Down. Enjoy this chat about the Amazon and its elixirs, the curse of being known as a Brat Packer no matter what you accomplish, how to be alone when you're away, and what one does when traveling when one is not a food person. Plus: an overheard remark from a subway putz in regards to what a book is NOT about, how Queen Latifah ruined everything, Tweeting Purina, and what the guy who plays FDR in Annie: The Musical is in store for. Plus: Mannequin fur coat feelings, what a campaign platform in 1964 might include, and having no idea what the hell Homeland is about. A show awash in nostalgia and amorous thrills!
