Sport and art again in this podcast brought to you by the British Society of Sport History in association with the Institute of Historical Research with Geoff talking to Veronica Smith of the University of York. Geoff talks to Veronica about the stained glass in the beautiful Victoria Baths in Manchester. Those of us of a certain age will remember the baths featuring in the BBC's television show Restoration in the 1990s. Veronica's research looks at the gender and class hierarchies embodied in the glasswork and puts them into the context of wider Edwardian society. There's also time to talk about the hard slog of researching stained glass in pubs and a quick plug for how friendly the BSSH's conference is! Raf also fills us in on the upcoming seminars from the BSSH featuring sport in Ireland with Dr Liam Callaghan and the Cricket World Cup with Allister Webb. Veronica Smith is currently studying for a PhD in History of Art, exploring the pivotal role of stained glass in municipal and domestic architecture of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in British cities. She has previously published work on stained glass firms of the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
In this week's episode, Kayla chops it up with Veronica Smith! Veronica has always leaned into creating things from scratch since she was young. but what made her turn to creating skincare products was seeing that there wasn't anything natural and organic that was affordable. Growing up with extremely sensitive skin, she knew the woes that came with not having a variety to choose from as it seemed like nothing but chemicals were flooding the beauty & skincare aisles. Alchemy Body Shop was birthed from a need for honest & clean products that are affordable + sustainable. We chat about: How & why Veronica started the Alchemy Body Shop The impact that toxic skincare products has on our body The importance of fats as it relates to our skin The truth behind putting coconut oil on your face Why antioxidants are the ultimate protector of your skin What to look for when you’re looking at a product’s label Why you should incorporate acids into your skincare routine The difference between exfoliators The state of the beauty industry as it relates to performative allyship The holistic components to skincare This episode is brought to you by: Wellness Glow Up Media Links mentioned in this episode Love self care?
