Or is it, as Gene Shalit would say, a big ol' WOOF? We also do a news segment (a rarity on this show) with an equal dose of good and bad entertainment news that includes David Lynch's passing, the cancellation of Frasier, and some promising developments for  Macon Blair's Toxic Avenger reboot. From original posting: "The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" welcome back special guest and "Saturday Night Jive" podcaster George who has devised a special game just for them. He's been eager for weeks to talk about the strange experience that is "The Book of Henry" and has come up with a game to best illustrate the even more strange paths the movie takes. The guys round out the episode with another round of their pun-heavy game So Shalit Be and mourn the loss of Harry Dean Stanton in a typically insufficient way. Available on iTunes Episode 189 includes: -Our long national nightmare is over: J.J. Abrams is returning to direct "Star Wars: Episode 9." -Nate finds Darren Aronfosky's "mother!" to be an interesting allegory, but knows it will be hated. -George cites two 2017 movies that stuck with him, "The Circle" for all the wrong reasons and "Wakefield" for all the right reasons. -This Week's Game I -- And Then...? -George describes sections of the plot of "The Book of Henry" and asks Ben and Nate to predict what will happen next. they are often wrong as this movie reveals itself to be absurdly wrong-headed. -This Week's Game II -- So Shalit Be! -The guys take their turns coming up with Gene Shalit-worthy blurbs for the likes of "Room," "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," "Hackers," and more."

Show SummaryOn today's episode, I'm having a conversation with Frederick Marx, an internationally acclaimed Oscar and Emmy nominated filmmaker with over 40 years in the film industry. We have a conversation about a recent project, a series of five films called Veterans Journey Home, which features the stories of veterans who are working to transition to post-military life and the insights of professionals that support themAbout Today's GuestFrederick Marx is an internationally acclaimed, Oscar and Emmy nominated director/writer with 40 years in the film business. He was named a Chicago Tribune Artist of the Year, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a recipient of a Robert F. Kennedy Special Achievement Award. His film HOOP DREAMS played in hundreds of theatres nationwide after winning the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and was the first documentary ever chosen to close the New York Film Festival. It was on over 100 “Ten Best” lists nationwide and was named Best Film of the Year by critics Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel, Gene Shalit, and Ken Turran and by the Chicago Film Critics Association. Ebert also named it Best Film of the Decade. It is one of the highest grossing non-musical documentaries in United States history. It has won numerous prestigious awards, including an Academy Nomination (Best Editing), Producer's Guild, Editor's Guild (ACE), Peabody Awards, the Prix Italia (Europe's top documentary prize) and The National Society of Film Critics Award. The New York, Boston, LA, and San Francisco Film Critics all chose it as Best Documentary, 1994. Utne Reader named it one of 150 of humanity's “essential works,” and the Library of Congress recently added it to its prestigious National Film Registry, and the International Documentary Association named it “The Best Documentary of All Time.” HOOP DREAMS (1994) is the film that first interested Marx in the welfare of teenage boys. BOYS TO MEN? (2004) distributed by Media Education Foundation takes that as its central theme. RITES OF PASSAGE: MENTORING THE FUTURE is the culmination, offering solutions. In 1993, Marx received an Emmy nomination for HIGHER GOALS (1992) for Best Daytime Children's Special. Producer, Director, and Writer for this national PBS Special, Marx directed Tim Meadows of “Saturday Night Live” fame. Accompanied by a curriculum guide, the program was later distributed for free to over 4,200 inner city schools nationwide. THE UNSPOKEN (1999), Marx's first feature film, features stellar performances from Russian star Sergei Shnirev of the famed Moscow Art Theatre, and Harry Lennix, most known for GET ON THE BUS, BOB ROBERTS, TITUS, ER, and MATRIX. A hobbyist songwriter, in 1991 Marx recorded a number of his songs collectively known as ROLLING STEEL. Two of those 11 songs are used over THE UNSPOKEN tail credits and one is used in BOYS TO MEN?. THE UNSPOKEN and ROLLING STEEL are available through this website. Having worked for a time as an English and creative writing teacher, Marx began his movie career as a film critic, and has worked both as a film distributor and exhibitor. He has also traveled extensively. He's lived in Germany, China, and Hungary. He's traveled repeatedly through Western and Eastern Europe, North Africa and Himalayan India. With a B.A. in Political Science and an MFA in filmmaking, Marx has coupled his formal education with a natural gift for languages, speaking German and some Mandarin-Chinese. His interest in languages and foreign cultures is reflected in PBS' international human rights program OUT OF THE SILENCE (1991), the widely acclaimed personal essay DREAMS FROM CHINA (1989), and Learning Channel's SAVING THE SPHINX (1997). He consulted on Iranian-Kurdish director Bahman Ghobadi's feature TURTLES CAN FLY (2004) and was a teacher of renowned Thai feature filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Three of Marx's films premiered at the New York Film Festival. His films are distributed throughout the web, on Amazon, and elsewhere. Having dedicated his life to the making and promotion of independent films, Marx, a true maverick in the increasingly commercialized world of “independent cinema,” continues to provide a voice of artistic and social integrity. He repeatedly returns to work with disadvantaged and misunderstood communities: people of color, abused children, the working poor, welfare recipients, prisoners, the elderly, and “at risk” youth. He brings a passion for appreciating multiculturalism and an urgent empathy for the sufferings of the disadvantaged to every subject he tackles. As his mission statement indicates (“Bearing witness, creating change”), his is a voice strong and clear, and profoundly human. Links Mentioned In This EpisodeVeterans Journey Home WebsiteWarrior Films Resources PagePsychArmor Resource of the WeekThis week's PsychArmor resource of the week is the PsychArmor course Seeking Support. Transitioning from military service can evoke strong emotions. Erik speaks with Academy Award Nominee, film editor, producer, director, and writer, Frederick Marx about his focus on providing a voice for disadvantaged and misunderstood communities, through his production company Warrior Films, which highlights unique stories of greatness! IT'S YOUR WONDERFUL LIFE! Two-minute project teaser: https://warriorfilms.org/its-your-wonderful-life/ More about Frederick: Frederick Marx has lived his life mission as a socially dedicated film artist for 45 years. He is an internationally acclaimed, Oscar and Emmy nominated producer/director. Prestigious awards include: Academy Nomination (Best Editing), Producer's Guild, Editor's Guild (ACE), Peabody Awards, the Prix Italia (Europe's top documentary prize) and The National Society of Film Critics Award. Utne Reader named it one of 150 of humanity's “essential works,” the Library of Congress recently added it to its prestigious National Film Registry, and the International Documentary Association named it the Best Documentary Ever. HOOP DREAMS ignited Marx's lifelong passion for the well-being of youth. That led to BOYS TO MEN? (2002) – a snapshot of the dire state of teen boys in the U.S. today. BOYS TO MEN? chronicles one year in the lives of three fifteen year old boys as they struggle to define themselves meaningfully as men. Soon Marx will make his final film on youth – RITES OF PASSAGE: MENTORING THE FUTURE. This documentary is about solutions. It will demonstrate why it's necessary to initiate and mentor all the world's youth. It will show audiences how it can be done, provide them with the tools to do it, and inspire them to take up the challenge. VETERANS JOURNEY HOME, a five part series of films, tells the story of the 2.7 million returning US veterans and what it takes for them to successfully transition back into civilian life. Whether officially diagnosed with PTSD or not, most vets carry the psychic scars of “moral injury” and will carry the battle within long after the bullets stop flying. Marx's films show them healing and transforming. His most recent film JOURNEY FROM ZANSKAR (2010) - featuring the Dalai Lama, with narration by Richard Gere - is now in worldwide release. THE UNSPOKEN (1999), Marx's first feature film, features stellar performances from star Sergei Shnirev of the famed Moscow Art Theatre (Russian voice of Disney's ALADDIN), and Harry J. Lennix, most known for MATRIX, Spike Lee's GET ON THE BUS, Tim Robbins' BOB ROBERTS, and Julie Taymor's TITUS. A hobbyist songwriter, Marx recorded a number of his songs collectively known as ROLLING STEEL (1991). Marx's vision for cross-cultural understanding is reflected in PBS' international human rights program OUT OF THE SILENCE (1991), the widely acclaimed personal essay DREAMS FROM CHINA (1989), and Learning Channel's SAVING THE SPHINX (1997). He consulted on Iranian-Kurdish director Bahman Ghobadi's feature TURTLES CAN FLY (2004) and was a teacher of renowned Thai feature filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

For Evan Valenti, working at Steven Valenti's Menswear was at first a way to earn some extra money while following his dream of being a radio broadcaster. But, it wasn't long until he discovered he had a great knack and, ultimately, a love for the all things menswear. However, this isn't simply a case of following in his Father's footsteps. Instead, Evan has brought a new angle to this legendary downtown business taking calculated risks on new trends, adapting to an ever-changing marketplace, and getting through to the other side of the monumental challenges presented by the pandemic. We cover a lot of ground quickly in this episode, including Evan's decision to choose menswear as a career, his working relationship with his father Steven and a mutual respect that strengthens the business, surviving the pandemic restrictions and making it through to the other side, dress pants that feel like comfy sweatpants (I can vouch for how amazing they are), how the Amazonification of the world has actually strengthened Valenti's niche in the marketplace, bike lanes, Evan's work in radio, his brother Michael J. Valenti's work with Sherman Baldwin on a remarkable time in Berkshire County radio, a great Gene Shalit anecdote when he appeared on the show, techniques of interviewing guests, what Star Wars trilogy to introduce first to kids, the entrepreneurial spirit of the Valenti family, including his mother Carolyn, and more. All that plus songs tailor-made for Chino of the Deftones, Gene Shalit lateral segues... and is the "King of the Horseflies" actually Trent Reznor? Stories We Tell (2012) is difficult to sum up. In 2007, director Sarah Polley discovered that her father was not her biological father. Ostensibly, this documentary is about that revelation and Polley’s desire to tell the story her own way. However, as the movie progresses, it becomes a poetic and surprising mediation on the fuzziness of memory, the perception of truth, and ultimately life itself. It’s more meta than your average meta documentary and well worth the watch. Along the way the guys discuss not going full-Shalit, what it takes to get a "mulligan" from the religious right, the influx of the F-word on cable TV, the question of why the female nipple is much more offensive than male nipples, whether "Black Panther" is more or less feminist than "Wonder Woman," the fallacy of the supposed Marvel villain problem, Wakanda not getting off easy for ignoring the slavery of its neighbors, and the blaxploitation possibilities of a were-spider-cop. Available on iTunes. Episode 204 includes: -Want to hear about the dumbest controversy possibly ever thanks to irate parents and the movie "Peter Rabbit"? -Gropers of the week: Shaun White and Scott Baio, which raises the question of whether Scott Baio is still even worthy of press coverage. -The new Aardman "Early Man" is an unexpected sports film with cavemen. -"Black Panther" is an enjoyable super hero movie unafraid of its blackness. -This Week's Pitch -- Black Super Heroes! -Ben pitches an alien species that seeded the planet in their black image, an inner city girl who is the goddess of bullets, and an X-Men-style story about slaves who develop mutant powers and revolt. -This Week's Game -- So Shalit Be! -The guys randomly draw movie titles and try and deliver blurbs in the vein of famed movie critic and pun-lover Gene Shalit.

After several months, Ty returns to discuss Gene Shalit, old high school yearbooks and other nonsense.  Heavy is off trying to find a good crappie spot, so Ty and Gustav have to record without him.   Being men of a certain age, they discuss hair cuts, rogue hairs and eyebrow trimming before they retell the story of Heavy at the family night and his campaign to be the mayor of the 903 area code. Ty recently got four copies of his mom's high school yearbooks so they talk about Father Monteblanc who is featured prominently and how different the high school kids of early seventies and late sixties looked compared to subsequent generations. Speaking of high school, Gustav retells the story of his poor French teacher and how after almost 30 years, she is still haunted by the memories of teaching Gustav to ecoute et repute. They discuss the decline of family reunions and how Megan's family reunion t-shirt caused awkwardness.  Then Ty relates how Megan's dad is pissed at him for an ice cream recommendation. Speaking of Megan's Movie Podcast the boys turn to film and film critics.  Gustav talks about Bobby Wygant and Siskel and Ebert, and then they wonder if Gene Shalit is Alive and Well.   On air fact checking confirms he is, at least at the time of the recording. They then discuss Peter Bogdonovich, Ben Johnson and the Last Picture Show as well as Russ Meyer movies, Mexican Charlton Heston in Touch of Evil, Marilyn Chambers as the Ivory Snow girl and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.   It's a fast paced stream of conscience episode so buckle up.   Let us know which Russ Meyer film is the best, who your favorite film critic was, or what movies you would like Megan to review bye sending five dollars and a self addressed stamp to canyouhearmepod@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter @canyouhearmepod @realgustav @tywebb3000 @longmireheavy Find us on Tumblr and Instagram @canyouhearmepod The post Gene Shalit is Alive and Well appeared first on Can You Hear Me?.

Then they discuss the wildly popular S-Town podcast and how close to home it feels to the 903 area code, where the guys were born and raised.  They also discuss some of the problems that they identified with the podcast. Somehow they get onto mustache talk, partly brought on by a recent spell of Gene Shalit jokes.  Gene was the mustachioed film critic for NBC's Today show for years and not0rious for bad pun s and sometimes questionable reviews. Long time listener Fake Bailey Jay has a couple of emails chastising Gustav for possible inaccuracies and omissions. Touching back on the previous misogynistic discussion about female singers of the seventies and eighties, Gustav brings up one the sisters from Heart and Ty ties it all back to the mountain climber game on the Price is Right.   Gustav has an interesting report on a recent upsurge in foreign listeners of Can You Hear Me.  The new hotbeds for Can You Hear Me downloads outside the U.S. are Japan and Germany.  Heavy has a theory why but Gus just wants to know who these people are and why they listen to the ramblings of educated hillbillies. They also have a new female listener who sends in a t-shirt idea and is currently trying to make her way through the entire back catalog of episodes.
