32. Women, Work & the Pandemic: 5 Years Later, Have We Made Progress? It's been 5 years since the COVID lockdown. Here's how the pandemic reshaped careers, caregiving, and what's next for women in the workplace. In March 2020, the world changed overnight. Many of our kids left for Spring Break, never to return to school in person until the 2021-22 school year. For millions of women, the pandemic wasn't just a global crisis, it was a career crisis. Between job losses, caregiving responsibilities, and impossible choices, many were forced to make life-altering decisions. Why This Episode Matters in 2025We often push through difficult times without fully processing their impact. On this week's Food Farms and Chefs Radio Show, we spoke with Chef Toni Lorraine who owns Dr. Brownies, then Chef Kyle Berman of Co-Op Restaurant & Bar, and the Chef & Owner of Forged Eatery, Chris Amendola. We began our show with Chef Toni Lorraine PhD(c), who owns Dr Brownies. Lorraine transitioned from creating Jamaican cuisine to creating plant-based brownies inspired by her family's needs. The pandemic hit a reset button for her, and she started down her path of creating plant-based desserts, learning how to create crave-worthy treats free of animal products. Her passion extends beyond her decadent desserts; her career spans being a Culinary Instructor, Management positions within the culinary community, and a strong dedication to supporting the community. In particular, she joined The Bowman Foundation for Workplace Equity and Mental Wellness in 2022. We next spoke with Chef Kyle Berman who works at CO-OP Restaurant & Bar located in University City, Philadelphia. This wonderful restaurant brings together the love of fresh, locally-sourced ingredients to feature classic cuisines in a unique way. CO-OP pays homage to the individuals who had settled in the region by creating classic dishes and adding a little twist. Co-Op understands the importance of using hyper-locally-sourced ingredients to enhance the flavors of every meal--and you will taste that difference when you visit Co-Op Restaurant & Bar. Our final guest this week, Chef and Owner Chris Amendola of Foraged, literally stands behind the name of his restaurant. Foraged was conceptualized as a result of Chef Amendola's love of foraging in the forest. Chris began the journey to this concept while wandering in the woods and happening upon edible ingredients. This passion naturally grew like the ingredients he found, and soon he began foraging with a book in-hand, eventually marrying his desire for cooking with his bountiful finds. Now, you can taste the love behind his passion inside Foraged, which offers hyper-locally-sourced, and seasonal ingredients on his menu which changes daily.

Rania Hoteit is a multi-award-winning serial entrepreneur and global impact leader. As Founder and former CEO of ID4A Technologies, Rania built a global company that is committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. ID4A Technologies has been revolutionizing the manufacturing processes while creating significant environmental, economic and social impact. Under Rania's leadership, ID4A was recognized by the White House Office of Science and Technology for “Fostering The Development of Advanced Manufacturing in the US and The World”; ranked on Entrepreneur 360's list of the “Best Entrepreneurial Companies in America”; included in the Inc. 5000 List of “America's Fastest Growing Private Companies”; received the Real Leaders “100 Top Impact Companies” Award; and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's 2021 Citizens Awards for "Best Economic Opportunity and Empowerment Program.” In this episode we discuss: The importance of diversity at the highest level of an organization The missing narrative of the positive impact artificial intelligence can have on employment Why Modern Day Slavery persists in global supply chains The role of dignity and accountability in leadership Key Takeaways: An underlying theme throughout this discussion was the importance of training and upskilling. This means investing in individuals. That individual employee investment is also an investment in the future of your organization. But this investment shouldn't be limited to equipping individuals to take on new roles as technology shifts what skills are required and in demand. It also needs to be extended in ways that will enable your organization to achieve diversity across seniority levels. As the saying goes “a rising tide lifts all ships”, but what history has blatantly taught us is that systemic biases are making it so only some ships rise with the tide. To get a different outcome, a different approach is required. Your values shape your priorities, and your priorities shape your corporate culture. Take a look at your culture. What are the values and priorities that drive it? If you say “diversity and inclusion” is a core part of your organization, but you don't see diversity and inclusion reflected in the culture and across senior leadership, then it's clearly not a value or a priority. If something truly matters to your senior leaders, they'll prioritize it and figure out a way to make it happen. If it's not reflected in the culture, then it's just lip service. Have you heard the saying that you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with? This saying communicates how we absorb the norms of those around us, so we should be intentional about who we choose to spend our time with. The same could be said for organizations. Think about the partners up and down your supply chain. Assume that their norms will rub off on your workforce, because they will. Do these partners meet the standards that you believe in for your company? Are you stronger together, helping each other become more transparent and ethical businesses? Or, are you enabling practices to continue that you don't agree with? Complicity means accountability. Who we choose to partner with is a vote for what we approve of. Each of us is accountable for our choices, so make them wisely. A waymaker is an active leader who opens doors, removes barriers, and ushers people through to greater levels of contribution. In this episode, Brandon Laws sits down with Tara Jaye Frank, author of The Waymakers, to discuss the inspiration behind her new book, a roadmap for fostering workplace equity. Listen in and learn how to recognize and seize opportunities to interrupt systems and processes that hinder equity in the workplace. TAKEAWAYS Inequity is rooted in power dynamics which exist in almost every system in which we work. When we determine who to hire, who to promote, or who to invite into a certain room where information is being disseminated, we are witnessing power dynamics at work. Power is usually concentrated within a select group of people, and whether that power is or is not shared dictates the degree to which other people can succeed. Equitable outcomes are tied to equitable opportunities, and not everyone gets access to those opportunities. If we don't train ourselves to interrupt some of these processes and ask better questions, then they don't ever change. We can take responsibility for our role in facilitating change by asking better questions and pushing back against bias. A QUICK GLIMPSE INTO OUR PODCAST

Workplace Equity is all about making the employees feel empowered and leveling the playing field for every employee. When organizations promote equality in the workplace they benefit from the competitive advantage of employing diverse talent.
It was a circuitous path that took Chris from journalism school to big tech. After struggling to land a journalism job after college, Chris ended up working in digital media where there was little belief in the web as a media property and confusion about the technology and lots of opportunities. There weren't a lot of women in tech then (though not much has changed since then) which meant it was fairly easy to end up working in digital media and break new ground at some of the biggest digital and entertainment properties in the U.S. As the tech got more complex and as the media industry struggled to get ahead of Silicon Valley, Chris moved to e-commerce and payments. Most recently, Chris has held several leadership roles in Product, Business Operations, and Sales at Visa before moving on to Facebook and landing at a Fintech building consumer credit products for consumers and small businesses. Always an activist at heart, Chris is heavily involved in supporting women's issues, voter registration, and equity in the workplace, which makes her one of the Executive Committee members for Workplace Equity and Equality. When she's not volunteering or working, she's hiking with her two golden retrievers, mountain biking and skiing with her husband and adventurous friends, and hopefully when COVID finally subsides, travels again. Using case studies, data, and evocative storytelling, Frank outlines how leaders with power and position can clear the path to workplace equity by: discovering where you are on your equity journey today. embracing the steps required to achieve true equity. understanding what your employees really want from you. developing a lens for the big barriers and intervention opportunities. connecting the dots between meeting talent needs and unlocking company value. recognizing when Waymaking matters most. showing up―every day―as a leader who makes a way.

The two discuss how Wesley navigated his life and career with a late diagnosis of ADHD and dyslexia, and how he became a passionate advocate for neurodiverse populations in the work environment. His THAT conference keynote, ‘Be like me… different' was a great starting point to discuss how ‘community shapes us', in which Wesley offers his perspective on the evolution of the role of social media manager, what to consider to create a community and his vision for the metaverse. Finally, Wesley offers his thoughts on how organisations can work towards being more inclusive for neurodivergent team members, including by measuring effort, not just success, and encouraging experimentation. A very passionate, in-depth and honest conversation. When you understand the kind of life you want to live, it makes sense to help your team do the same. This week equity strategist Tara Jaye Frank joins me to discuss why CEOs are so passionate about bringing inclusivity and equity into the workplace and the common challenges that keep them from experiencing real change. Listen in as Tara and I discuss having a bias for action, the importance of assessing before creating a plan, how scarity impacts honest conversation, and how to frame conversations with your team in “four dimensions” to carry greater results. “The first step about way making is really having a heart to be part of the solution and then learning what it takes to actually get there.” – Tara Jaye Frank Tara Jaye Frank is an expert, thought leader and pioneer in the D,E&I space. Her book, The Waymakers: Clearing the Path to Workplace Equity with Competence and Confidence, is coming out in May 3. Tara has recently been cited in articles covering topics including President Biden’s announcement to appoint the first Black SCOTUS in Business Insider, her LinkedIn post on the Brian Flores issues which got a lot of comments and traction, 10 black female entrepreneurs on how we can all be more inclusive on HerMoney and what corporate America should do now in Forbes, to name a few. About the Waymakers: Beyond strategies and systems, what really drives workplace equity and inclusion? The truth is that all historically excluded professionals who have broken through to greater levels of belonging and achievement have succeeded not by systems change alone, but because influential leaders chose to remove barriers, open doors, and guide them toward their goals. The bottom line? Someone made a way for them. Using case studies, data, and evocative storytelling, Frank outlines how leaders with power and position can clear the path to workplace equity by: discovering where you are on your equity journey today.• embracing the steps required to achieve true equity.• understanding what your employees really want from you.• developing a lens for the big barriers and intervention opportunities.• connecting the dots between meeting talent needs and unlocking company value.• recognizing when Waymaking matters most.• showing up―every day―as a leader who makes a way. Tara Jaye Frank discusses how anyone not in the learning loop (women, black or brown people) need someone to make a way for them to enter top management. An executive for many years herself, she says many upper managers want to do the right thing, but they don't know what that is and fear making a mistake. Her new book, out in May, The Waymakers, show them how, and Tara's consulting business walks them through the process, bridging where they are to where they want to be.

Tuesday on Political Rewind: It has been more than a year since many Americans were shaken into action by the police shootings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks and other Black Americans. In response, millions took to the streets to demand an end to systemic racism, police brutality and injustice in American society. Meanwhile, corporations, universities and other institutions began evaluating internal practices that perpetuate discrimination against people of color in hiring and promotion. But as the summer of 2021 begins, it is time to ask whether there has been real progress in achieving the promises made by big businesses and other institutions. Subha Barry, CEO of Seramount, joined us to discuss her organization's recent report tracking employee perception and corporate action on social justice issues. She said a new generation of white-collar workers are looking for a reflection of their values in their workplace. "Young people are doing something that the generation before them did not do, and they are voting with their feet," Barry said. "They walk out of companies and they go seek other organizations whose values are aligned with theirs." Kyle Stapleton is a co-founder and board member of The A Pledge, a commitment by Atlanta marketing and advertising agencies to match the makeup of their teams to the diversity of Atlanta by 2030. He said the leaders of corporate America, in Atlanta and elsewhere, have an obligation to address workplace inequity. "Frankly, any good leader worth their stripes should see a moment, meet the moment and and do the right thing to be a leader in the moment," Stapleton said. How has the country progressed in the search for equality and justice in the workplace? What role does moral leadership play in creating a more just society? Panelists: Subha Barry — CEO, Seramount Dr. Robert Franklin — Professor of Social Ethics, Candler School of Theology, Emory University and Former President, Interdenominational Theological Center Kyle Stapleton — Co-Founder of The A Pledge and Senior Manager of Culture & Experience, WarnerMedia Studios Matt Kempner — Senior Reporter, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
