On this special bonus episode of Heroes of Noise we're joined by returning guests and friends of the show Ben Rock and Bob DeRosa. Ben and Bob were kind enough to take the time to talk with us about their brand new Audible story "Catchers". We spend time talking about the ins and outs of their recording process, production during Covid, their amazing cast and much more.  We want to thank Ben and Bob for stopping by and wish them success with this captivating story that will have listeners on the edge of their seats. You can purchase and download "Catchers" right now by clicking here. "Catchers": In Buck Lake, Colorado, the resident dog catcher, Collins, is on the verge of retirement. But something strange lurks in the woods, about to ruin his plans.... After 30 years, Collins is ready to be done with small-town animal control. His replacement, Blair, is a Gen Z vet student who hates mansplaining; they don't get along. But on the eve of his retirement, Collins gets a call that changes everything. There's been a report of a vicious wild dog on the loose. Collins and Blair head to a remote family farm to check it out. But instead of finding one wayward mutt, they're attacked by an entire pack of bloodthirsty creatures. Are they animals? Aliens? Or something more sinister? Collins and Blair have never seen eye to eye, but they'll have to learn to work together if they want to survive the night. The future of Buck Lake depends on it. Catchers is a small-town horror tale with all the charm of a classic ‘80s creature-feature, updated for the modern era. Billy Gardell (Bob Hearts Abishola) stars as Collins alongside Herizen Guardiola (American Gods) as Blair. With hair-raising twists and a diverse cast of characters, Catchers has something to send shivers down every horror lover's spine. Settle in for an extra-spooky Halloween episode! We’re joined by Michael Monello, one of the creators of The Blair Witch Project, Co-founder and Creative Director of Campfire Media and co-producer of the Video Palace podcast for Shudder, and Qiana Whitted, a professor English and African American Studies at the University of South Carolina and author of EC Comics: Race, Shock and Social Protest, which won the 2020 Eisner Award for best academic/scholarly work. Together, they discuss horror in film, radio/podcast, comics, novels, television, and every-day life, helping to map the genre for our listeners. They start with reflections on their own early exposure to the genre. Whitted discusses the way EC comics introduced racism as a form of horror across their suspense and shock oriented titles and she situates these stories within the political debates that followed from Frederic Wertham’s attacks on horror and crime comics and the ways these paved the way for the comics code. Monello traces the ways Video Palace took inspiration from radio horror series in the ways it uses sound to draw the listener in with a mixture of fascination and dread. Along the way, they reflect on how horror has been a site for social transgression and artistic experimentation, and consider the ways international horror films can break the formulas and take us out of a familiar space. And they end with speculations about what forms of horror will allow us to rethink our society in the wake of COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter.Full Transcript will be available soon on our website at https://www.howdoyoulikeitsofar.org/episode-74-horror-social-change-and-experimentation-with-michael-monello-and-qiana-whitted/Here’s your horror watch/read/listen list from this episode (you may want to leave the lights on!):Horror in CinemaGremlinsGhouliesNightmare on Elm StreetUniversal MonstersMidsommarThe Blair Witch ProjectMedia HorrorGeorge RomeroCreepshowUPA – “The Tell Tale Heart" (animated)German Expressionism – from Germany to American horror filmCabinet of Doctor CaligariDavid Lynch – Blue VelvetDawn of the Dead (extended Mall Hours version)Tod Browning – FreaksRobin WoodsAudition (Japan)Terrified (Argentina)Carrie (multiple snap endings)John Waters (outsider culture)Jordan Peele – Get Out (alternate ending) ; UsHostProducer Val LewtonA Quiet PlaceDocumentary: Horror Noire: A History of Black HorrorHorror in ComicsEC Comics: Race, Shock and Social ProtestSwamp ThingTales from the CryptEC comics – William Gaines,  Al FeldsteinVault of TerrorHaunt of FearFrederic Wertham and Moral Panic around Horror and Crime ComicsComics Code“The Whipping”EC Comics illustrator Wally WoodBernie Krigstein – “Master Race” ; ImpactEC Shock Suspense Stories – “The Patriot” ; “You, Murderer” (adaptation of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)Horror Fandom60s Monster CultureFamous Monsters of Filmland – Forest J. When director Ángel Manuel Soto received the script for Charm City Kings, he found a connection in the story of disenfranchised youth growing up in a marginalized community like Baltimore- he himself grew up on the streets of Santurce in Puerto Rico. The movie is a coming of age story centered on a young teen named Mouse and his two buddies, who are determined to join the subculture of dirt bike stunt riders. The film, with a story by Barry Jenkins, is based on a documentary called 12 O'Clock Boys. Ángel wanted the film to be authentic to this rider culture. The bikers in the movie were all real and did their own stunts, which look amazing. His biggest inspiration for the film was Baltimore: shooting on location, working with locals as extras, and keeping it authentic. Ángel worked with cinematographer Katelin Arizmendi to create a raw and naturalistic look. He found it a pleasure to be able to work with such talented actors like Teyonah Parris, Will Catlett, and hip hop artist Meek Mill, who were proactive and prepared with what they wanted to bring to the characters. Ángel had to work within the limited hours for the young cast, but Jahi Di'Allo Winston as Mouse was very natural and intuitive, and all three child actors had chemistry from day one, which is hard to find. Phedon Papamichael's latest project is The Trial of the Chicago 7, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. The bulk of the story centers on the 1969 trial of seven men accused of inciting a riot in the park outside of the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In Phedon's view, a film is actually made three times: it's conceived in the writing process, developed during principal photography, then reinvented and finalized in the editing process. When working with a director and writer like Aaron Sorkin, the way the film is scripted is exactly what he wants to see on the screen. The person speaking must be on camera, and specific shots are needed to sync with the rhythm of his words, like a poem. Sorkin is not a technical filmmaker, and after their initial meeting, Phedon knew Sorkin would rely heavily on him for creating the visuals. Since the majority of the action takes place in the courtroom, Phedon had to generate visual interest, making sure they had the right lenses and angles to enhance the drama, and to get good reaction shots of the jury and spectators. He used the lighting within the courtroom to enhance the moods and tension, and adjusted the light coming through the windows to reflect the changing seasons. When shooting the protests in the park and the violent clashes with the police, the camera crew went hand-held documentary style. Some of the footage from the protests was actually intercut with real footage taken from a film called Medium Cool, a combination documentary/fiction film by famed cinematographer Haskell Wexler, who shot actual footage of the riots in the park from the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Cinematographer Eric Branco discovered early on that he enjoyed translating people's stories into visuals. Eric started out as an actor in high school, but quickly realized no one had any interest in holding the camera except himself. While in film school, he developed an eye and shot several student projects, then found work on film sets in New York as a grip and gaffer while shooting short films on the side. Eric's latest film, The 40-Year-Old Version was shot almost entirely on black and white film stock. Director Radha Blank was very firm that the movie be black and white- in fact, when Eric received the script, it read “A New York tale in black and white.” So Eric came with a suitcase full of black and white photo books of New York when he and Radha met, which helped them arrive at The 40-Year-Old Version's look: a matte texture with a prominent grain. Eric ran several tests to find the perfect film stock for the movie, and shot it handheld with vintage lenses. The movie is a funny, semi-autobiographical story starring Blank as a struggling, almost-40 playwright who is determined not to sell out or compromise her artistic principles and reinvigorates her creativity by becoming a hip-hop artist. The 40-Year-Old Version won the U.S Dramatic Competition Directing Award for Blank at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020. For Eric, it was the third film he'd shot to go to Sundance in as many years. He felt honored to be the cinematographer of Clemency, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2019. Written and directed by Chinonye Chukwu, Clemency took a long time to get off the ground before Alfre Woodard was cast in the lead role. You can watch The 40-Year-Old Version streaming on Netflix. Sound Designer Jeremy J. LeeThis week's call is with Jeremy J. Lee, a sound designer. He's worked in theater productions and we talk about his adventures in podcasting. He's really proud of the sound design work he did for a podcast called Video Palace that was written and produced by the folks behind Blair Witch Project. Like that movie, Video Palace uses the concept of "found footage," media materials that seem like they were discovered out in the world, but were actually created in a studio.  Jeremy did the sound mix and additional sound design for an animated short called Z- Rider which will be out soon.  I worked with him on my podcast Privacy Pod. While I recorded all the actors in a studio, Jeremy created the audio world, making studio recordings of actors sound like they delivered their lines in a parking structure, layering in subtle touches like the squeak of a chair against the floor or the clatter of an audio cassette box. Things that never happened in the studio are part of your listening experience now, thanks to sound design. In the call, Jeremy and I talk about how he creates worlds in audio. There's a lot of sort of back of the brain thought that happens with these projects. You read the script and you take your notes and while you're sleeping the back of your brain is thinking about stuff. - Jeremy J. LeeJeremy talks about how daydreaming is a huge part of designing something, the results of his hearing test with an audiologist, and how audio helps us experience the emotion in a scene. If you’re curious what Foley is in a movie, we go there too. If after listening you want to keep digging into audio, Jeremy recommends a podcast called Twenty Thousand Hertz. It’s all about recording sound. Since this is a show about audio I should mention one more thing: When you listen you’ll notice that it sounds like either I have a cold or I was phoning in the interview from a Jules Verne submersible cruising twenty-thousand leagues under the sea. It's only a cold.  But it does sound like I am in a submersible. Thanks for listening,LeePS.
