What happens when the Muses of Greek mythology want to have a podcast... but they don't actually want to do the work of making one? They conscript a demigod, of course! In the inaugural episode of Myths and Muses: A Plato Learning Podcast, we start at the very beginning: origin stories and myths of creation! Whether it's stories of how the whole world and all the gods came to be, or stories with a smaller focus, like the creation of a particular flower, origin stories can tell us a lot about a culture. They're also Origin something we humans seem to find endlessly fascinating – at least if all the Batman and Wolverine movies are anything to go by! We'll look at a few examples, then dive into the origins of storytelling itself. This episode's interview features Persephone and her mortal alter-ego, Plato Learning founder Crystal Bobb-Semple! If you'd like to submit a story or artwork to be featured on Myths & Muses, use this form (with a Mortal Guardian's permission!). It's embiggen time as we tackle many volumes of G. Willow Wilson's Ms. Marvel, as well as the entire six episodes of Bisha K. Ali's Disney+ TV series. We're both BIG Kamala Khan fans, so we were psyched to discuss the Brown girl from Jersey City who saves the world.Talking points: why Kamala is such a great character and why Iman Vellani is perfect to play her, the series' focus on her family, Bruno's disability arc in the comics and why we have no patience for those who criticize the Partition storyline.Wanna connect with the show? We're delighted to be tackling a new queer Canadian Indigenous film with Bretten Hannam's Wildhood (2021).Featuring great teen performances and picturesque Nova Scotia landscapes, this road trip movie about a pair of two-spirited Mi'kmaw boys is beautifully shot by cinematographer Guy Godfree (Giant Little Ones). We have some quibbles with the leisurely pacing, the sex scene and the arbitrary use of subtitles, but we're happy to see another side of Atlantic Canadian represented onscreen.Reference: Herb Wyile. It's time for a Brenna pick as we tackle Jandy Nelson's 2010 story of sibling grief, as well as Josephine Decker's 2022 adaptation. This is a Juneteenth special episode. The story, ‘The People Could Fly' is taken from Virginia Hamilton's The People Could Fly: American Black Folktales, an anthology of stories originally told by African slaves and retold by generations of black American storytellers. This story is rooted in one of the ugliest events of human history. I warn you, it's not easy to hear.   It is a fantasy tale that tells of how some enslaved Africans had wings and could fly. In order for them to escape the abuses of slavery, they began to sing magic words and their bodies lift into the sky as they fly away to freedom. It is all about the dream of freedom. For the Africans who were captured into slavery and brought to America, there was little reason for hope, but through folk tales like this one, they were able to at least imagine a day when they could become free.

Virginia Hamilton. Lordy, this woman is a gas to hang out with. With pockets bursting with TV affiliate stations, high profile promo gigs, and a myriad of movie trailers under her belt, Virginia's well on her way to ruling the voiceover genres where mostly men dominate.  Lock the children away for this podcast. We've got some adult themes - addressed in the most childish manner, mind you, but adult nonetheless!  Virginia Hamilton website

“One of the things I’ve always done in my career is I’ve always volunteered for the hardest job.” Long before there was LinkedIn or Monster.com, when computers still filled up whole rooms and only displayed green text on black screens, Virginia Hamilton led a team that created the first statewide job matching system in the United States. She hasn’t stopped since, taking on roles in policy, program design, and even starting and running her own non-profit, all with an eye toward changing large-scale systems in new ways. Today, Virginia works at the US Department of Labor and is a seasoned innovator in government and the workforce development sector. One thing I love is how Virginia didn’t just fall into this role as an innovator. She’s put her hand up over and over again. [...] The US Department of Labor has run [HCD] challenge twice for more than 120+ teams across the nation. The lessons these teams have learned have been fundamentally game-changing – teams are re-energized, new insights about what customers need have emerged, and programs have become more successful in reaching the unemployed. Most importantly, this is 600+ people across the nation that now have a new process that they can use over and over again in their day-to-day work. We’re honored to be a part of the work to help to spread “good process” in service of supporting workforce development across the US, and we’re so glad for individuals like Virginia who are working behind the scenes to improve the lives of millions in the US. Listen to my full interview with Virginia to learn: - More about Virginia’s inspiring career in supporting the un(under)-employed find productive jobs - The three simple lessons she has learned in trying to launch and get buy-in for new initiatives - The importance of what Virginia calls “good process” and why that trumps “best practice” - How human-centered design has had an impact on workforce innovation Our thanks to volunteer sound engineer: Wu Shan See more about Virginia Hamilton, and her work, visit our blog http://plusacumen.org/blog/on-leading-change-three-simple-lessons-on-innovation-from-government You can also hear our previous episode here https://soundcloud.com/onleadingchange/how-are-you-making-your-customers-feel-beautiful Know someone you think we should be interviewing?
