Edouard is the CEO of Stellantis Insurance, having spent his career building new ways to solving insurance-related needs globally. He is responsibile for creating insurance solutions to support Stellantis' growth objectives in their automotive business, where insurance can enable or hinder those aspirations. He formerly worked at Volvo and Stellantis' predecessor, PSA. He joins the show as he winds down his time leading Stellantis' efforts in Insurance, and on the back of a major announcement with Bolt on embedding auto insurance in the US market. We met over a year ago when we were part of research Capgemini was doing on the future of Mobility and its impact on insurance as part of their World Insurance Report in 2023, which Lars Boeing joined the show to discuss. I shared my work on the Future of Auto Insurance with Edouard, and was excited to bring him on the show to discuss his take on the question given his rich background in the space and being a key driver in where things are heading. Highlights from the Show Edouard began his insurance career while still in school, doing his master's dissertation on new entrants into insurance That lead to a roll at Volvo Group to setup an insurance business, which then lead to a roll with PSA (now Stellantis) to build their insurance business Why would car companies (OEMs) get into insurance? Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) - if insurance for a given car model is too expensive, people won't buy your car, so OEMs want to work to control insurance cost as part of TCO Diversification of Revenues - important in any business, and if you run it right, there's attractive margin in insurance Opportunity - insurance is a way to demonstrate to consumers that you care, and the perception of most insurers is that they're against you rather than trying to pay your claims, so OEMs are well positioned to be the solution to that issue But can OEMs succeed? They're very well positioned with existing assets – brand name with high loyalty and affinity, logistics and supply chains, key purchasing moments, repair and distribution networks, deep understanding of the physical product being insured, etc. They have the assets and resources, but the remaining challenge is execution There's also a question of whether the OEM has to be the insurer, or simply partner with insurance providers and capacity This depends on risk appetite, which is trickier in insurance since you don't know the cost of product until after it is sold Stellantis has looked at multiple models, from building their own insurer to partnering with insurers to working with platforms like Bolttech in each of their global markets to meet local needs Partnership matters because, even if you have your own insurer, you cannot and do not want to take every risk that comes in Car dealers still need to make the sale, so they need solutions beyond an OEM's insurer to be sure they don't get forced to say "No" to a customer who needs coverage We discussed whether OEM's push into subscription services means insurance mustbe part of the equation, but there are local regulations that need to be navigated that may not allow this, so Stellantis must have options for customers that could include an embedded insurance offering but has to include other paths The technology we have to enable new pathways for OEMs to sell insurance are completely different than ever before It's important for insurers to create far more technical capabilities to partner with OEMs as most insurers currently are not flexible enough for most OEM needs You can get the report at future-of-insurance.com/capgemini2023 Download The Future of Auto Insurance: Connected, Embedded, Subscribed for free today This episode is brought to you by The Future of Auto Insurance: Connected, Embedded, Subscribed, which you can download for free today, thanks to support from Guidewire. This report is part of The Future of Insurance book series, available globally from Amazon in print, Kindle and Audible audiobook. Prior to that, Rob served as President and Chief Executive Officer of EMEA and was the Chief Financial Officer of AIG's global property and casualty business.  Before joining AIG, Rob was a partner at Deloitte & Touche L.L.P. where, for 18 years, he used his public accounting experience to serve global financial institution clients, including MetLife, The Prudential Insurance Company of America, and Merrill Lynch.  Rob is a C.P.A. He earned his M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Rider University in New Jersey and Chairman of the Rider University Board of Trustees. Highlights from the Show Rob started as an accountant, and then moved to AIG He left AIG with a lot of lessons of what to do and what not to do, and used that to start bolttech as a an insurance distribution solution for the industry They work on embedded insurance, but with a broad definition of the term Bolttech runs an insurance exchange, connecting buyers and sellers of protection and insurance, and current have a scaled solution that's doing 25 homeowners quotes a minute, every hour of every day (that's 36,000 per day for just one line of business) Their take on embedded allows for the flexibility to offer choice of carrier and product, but also thinks much more broadly about how insurance can support the transaction around the core product it provides protection around, rather than trying to be the center of the transaction itself bolttech intentionally does not think about insurance as the center of the transaction, which helps them to think about other moments and areas to connect into the needs of the consumer rather than a single buying moment Part of this comes from the understanding insurers don't need to do or solve for everything themselves, and finding ways to solve a customer's needs whether it's with something you built or not is better than trying to force your own solution when it's not fit for purpose Two things have been holding embedded back from living up to the hype yet Before that, bolttech recognizes that they're fast but their partners aren't always as fast, so they need to slow down while helping their partners to speed up so they can meet in the middle The first element slowing things is the idea of DIY – I don't need anyone else to be able to build an embedded solution It is possible, but it is slower than if you worked with someone else Second, many players are working on embedded solutions in pockets, which end up being disjointed and subscale rather than what would be possible if we could connect those points together so they can help each other grow When you try to build the entire embedded solution alone, you will move slower and less ideally than if you cooperated and connected to others working on the issue, too You really need to think in the really big picture of everything around the customer rather than any one product, or even just insurance Rob thinks about bolttech as building the rails that enable the trains of products customers need can be delivered, regardless of who builds or sells the products themselves This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance, Volume IV. His engagements at Capgemini Invent include the design of various Future of Claims strategies and roadmaps for P&C personal lines and commercial lines insurers, leading large-scale Transformation programs, the process optimization using process mining, RPA and AI solutions for P&C and Life Insurers in Claims and other areas, design of digital strategies, assessing and maturing DevOps and SAFe organizations, implementing new regulations, the redesign of ways of working and Organizational Change Management for insurers, banks and captive finance firms. Lars holds an MBA from HHL Handelshochschule Leipzig, a Master's degree in Banking from the Frankfurt School of Finance as well as a Master in Economics from University of Goettingen. Highlights from the Show Lars is a Vice President at Capgemini, and was part of the work in their annual World Insurance Report, which focused on the future of mobility insurance in the 2023 edition The question is around what the shifting patterns of mobility mean to insurance, and how insurers can start to take actions today to prepare for a movement from insurance the asset of mobility today, a car, to the experience of mobility tomorrow across different modalities and moments, even if people don't own cars They also look at how we break from the interactive pattern of product development to truly creating coverage that insureds need as their situations evolve Innovation has struggled in the industry often because the people responsible for it are separate from the main business, so they struggle to get new ideas into the core of the business For example, if we look at embedding insurance into mobility, it's looking at mobility itself as a service, and then thinking about how an insurer can be helpful across the experience and not just in offering coverage; are there ways the insurer can help coordinate mobility or provide safety guidance and support throughout a journey across different modalities, etc? The nature of what is being insured is changing, and CG talks about ACES - Autonomous, Connected, Electric and Shared - when they talk about vehicles in the future They see 8x growth for this space, while traditional Auto/Motor insurance will still be there, but will retract The nature of risk is changing, too, where it's not just about Auto Liability, but also software and cyber security risks as cars are connected and software-defined They think carriers should think about 4 things What is the value proposition carriers should think about offering in the future, and is it based on actual customer behavior and not what we say their behavior is? How do we use that value proposition to change our business model? What culture and capabilities do we need to have to support this model? What is the risk management we need around these new products? The report was built with very broad perspectives from across insurance, tech, auto manufacturers and more You can get the report at future-of-insurance.com/capgemini This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance Volume III. Imagine a world where your underwriters can design their own insurance products in front of their eyes. A world where you don't wait months for developers to come back to show you things they have built that end up bearing no relationship to what you asked them to do. In this world if you don't like it you can just dump it and start again. And in this world the idea of legacy technology is meaningless- it simply ceases to exist. Here your only development cost is a monthly subscription. Well, it turns out this world is already here and not many of us know about it. I think you can tell from these words that today's Episode is one that I found incredibly liberating and enlightening to record. I love it when I learn something new, especially when its something I have been hearing other people talk about for a while, but I've been too busy or perhaps too embarrassed or scared to ask them to explain it to me. The world of no-code software is one of those things that I've been hearing about for a few years, but haven't really understood in any detail. So it was brilliant to meet Risto Rossar CEO of Insly, which is a business that has been running a no-code platform for the insurance industry for the best part of a decade. Risto is one of us – he's an insurance guy. His first business was a digital insurance broker he launched around the turn of the millennium. Back then to do this you had to create all the tech yourself because it simply didn't exist. That firm became very successful in the Baltic States and was sold on. But Risto soon realised he was onto something. Scaling brokers globally was hard but scaling software is a lot easier. He decided his next venture would be a tech business that helped to digitise the insurance sector That is how Insly was born. Now it's working with 40 carriers and MGAs and around 4,000 brokers from around the world. Listen on for an inspiring conversation with someone who understands that the only way to unleash real innovation is to liberate insurance folk from the need to learn how to code and allow us to get genuinely creative with insurance for the first time in our history. In our discussion we also slay a lot of the myths around other tech buzzwords such as Blockchain and the idea of the moment: Embedded Insurance. Risto is great company and I can highly recommend a listen – you'll learn a huge amount and hopefully end by feeling inspired and invigorated. So of course I'm biased as to whether or not I think Obie is doing something unique and leading the industry. It's not often you get to put your own CEO in the hot seat and push on buttons. Obviously, I've got inside baseball information, but I used that to get Ryan to spill the goods. In this interview, Ryan talks a good deal about what is and what is not embedded insurance, why this is such an important feature for proptech and fintech companies alike, and how Obie is working to bring about a much simpler insurance experience for real estate investors. Hint: simpler for investors means incredibly difficult for the tech company—but with big rewards.More about Obie and RyanObie is the leading insurtech, focused on providing insurance for real estate investors. By focusing on partnerships with proptech and fintech companies, Obie is the first and only company to offer instantly bindable quotes as an embedded insurance experience. He works with leaders, executives, and board members to create and implement new growth strategies based on corporate venturing techniques focused on the Platform economy and Digital Ecosystems to help large enterprises transform the business of today to me the needs of tomorrow. KEY TAKEAWAYS The main problem is that digitization, which is happening across every sector, tends to shrink and contract traditional profit pools because you get new competitors, new entrants, new regulations, and customer expectations. So companies must spend more money to keep up with those emerging expectations. The old models that were absolutely fine in the analog world are coming under increasing pressure. Traditional players are increasingly feeling that pressure and need to do something different. When I was working in telecommunications, I started to think about the why. Why are those digital companies (Google, Facebook) so successful, and what could TelCos learn about them? TelCos have a lot of power in the market but they tend to focus on what they know best – creating the infrastructure – not so good though at creating services or new types of digital business models. In 2005-6 it was clear that the companies that were succeeding most in a digital world were those that were running ‘platform-based' business models, they weren't necessarily creating the end customer products themselves, but they were acting as an intermediary between the customer and the third party that had the solutions. That still is the most powerful business model in the digital world. I wasn't interested in financial services, I hadn't done a lot of work in it until about 3 years ago, but it seemed to me that it's so important for the world, it underpins all our commercial and social activity – we can't operate without financial services – yet there was something fundamentally broken with that industry and the gap between what people need and what they were being given was incredibly wide – there are so many people who are unprotected and have no insurance around the world – it's so important for a small business to get a loan. The type of experience I have with my old bank is lightyears away from the new banks that are popping up now and no one's really making solutions that look after my financial wellness, to help me understand how I need to save, borrow, plan for the future, I'm just left to access a few quite basic solutions from the incumbents. So, I thought, with these huge gaps and numbers of people excluded or badly served by the industry, there's got to be some change needed. Embedded finance cuts across all the different business models and says: why don't we enable other organizations that are much closer to the end-users, that interact with them more frequently than we do? We should do so in order to sell financial services because they have more regular interactions or touch points with the end-users, they're often more trusted in certain contexts too. Why don't we help them not only sell solutions but also embed them – use components that we've got to create new types of experiences that make their propositions more attractive. Digital technology has become much more sophisticated now, all those capabilities (products, data, underwriting capabilities) that were locked away within traditional companies are now able to be modularised and extracted into software technologies developed by tech companies. They are configured in ways that suit the customer better or more conveniently through unique experiences for the end-users.   BEST MOMENTS 'The business model is the most fundamental way that a company creates and delivers value for customers, captures value for itself, and increasingly shares value with others. It's the most fundamental aspect of innovation and most companies find it very difficult to execute on their business model innovation promise because well-crafted business models address so much than what is often delivered right now.' ‘Digital companies have taught us that you do not need to create a platform yourself, you can co-opt developers and third parties to create solutions for your customers, as Apple does with the App Store. In so doing, you drive demand for your core business, in Apple's case their phones.' ‘Over 50% of the big publicly traded financial companies were making zero or negative economic profit. There's something wrong here, the customers aren't getting what they need and the majority of those who are supplying financial products aren't making any profit either. That suggests there is a fundamental business model problem in finance which is so important for everybody to live, work and enjoy the company of others.' ‘99% of a financial institution's resources and money goes on digitizing, making more efficient and optimizing the existing business model. It is necessary but insufficient if that business model is going to deliver profits and economic returns to shareholders.'
