We have long been hearing about various threats to bees and other pollinators, including Colony Collapse Disorder, new pathogens and bee pests, environmental and nutritional stressors, and pesticides such as neonicotinoids. Impacts to Queen Bees and their genetics are also a concern. According to the non-profit organization, HoneyLove, cities are apparently the last refuge for the Honeybee. HoneyLove [http://honeylove.org] is dedicated to urban beekeeping, educational outreach, and advocating for the health and well-being of honey bees. This week, we welcome Ceebs Bailey, HoneyLove's Factotum, and Kristy Pace, their Volunteer Director. We owe a debt to bees as they pollinate 80-90% of the world's flowering plants, including more than 130 types of fruits and vegetables. One out of every three or four bites of food you eat was made possible by bees and the honeybee is responsible for $15 billion in U.S. agricultural crops annually. While some are concerned about the health of bees for economic reasons and threats to food production on this continent, the reality is our fate is directly connected to bees and their giveaway to the ecosystem at large, in vitalizing the growth of trees, flowers, and a host of other plants; they are essential to creating and sustaining biodiversity on the planet. The average human on this continent consumes roughly 1.31 lbs of honey per year which translates to a bee visiting 2+ million flowers and flying 55,000+ miles. May we offer up more love, gratitude and respect to the Honeybee and learn how we can contribute to their continuance. For an extended interview and other benefits, become an EcoJustice Radio patron at https://www.patreon.com/posts/honeylove-with-84482060 HoneyLove.org [http://honeylove.org] is a Los Angeles-based educational non-profit focused on teaching the public about honey bees and aspiring hobbyists about safe and respectful urban beekeeping. Ceebs Bailey is a writer in West L.A. who started out a few years ago with a modest tumbling composter outside the kitchen door and now has raised beds in the front yard, a flock of chickens and six beehives around the city. Kristy Pace has been cultivating community through theatre, artivism, and volunteerism for over 20 years. She is a teacher and environmental activist associated with SoCal 350, Climate Reality San Fernando Valley, and of course, Honey Love. Carry Kim, Co-Host of EcoJustice Radio. Jonathan GoldmanJonathan has been involved in teaching improv classes and workshops in Palm Springs for a number of years. After attending public schools in Brooklyn, NY, Jonathan then trained to be an optometrist in Boston. Upon realizing that there should be more to a career than forever saying, "Which is clearer? One or Two?", he became the first O.D. to get an M.B.A. in Health Administration (from Temple University in Philadelphia). His career took me to Chicago where he taught; and also took Toastmasters classes. In 1983 Jonathan moved to San Francisco and worked for the Department of Public Health for much of the end of our last century. His last two positions were as a Workers Comp Coordinator and a Hospital Trainer. He also presented "Critical Thinking" workshops for various Kaiser Permanente North hospitals' staff and was manager for Project Inform's National HIV/AIDS treatment hotline. Happily discovering the BATS School of Improvisation (then known as Bay Area Theatresports™ in 1998, he soon became the Volunteer Director for their community service program, Laughing Stock, which provides free Improv classes to people living with life-threatening illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Hep C, etc., and their care partners. He continued taking specialty classes, performed occasionally with the Mirth Brokers ensemble under the direction of Gerri Lawlor, and lead Intro to Improv workshops at a variety of HIV/AIDS and men's retreats in northern and southern California and afloat on the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean.Jonathan credits his improv skills for getting him to be a contestant for Wheel of Fortune in 2005. Although landing on a Bankrupt on his first wheel spin and then did the "Ta Dah - Circus Bow" for all of America; he later went on to the Bonus round. According to Slate.Com, he solved one of the 15 toughest WOF puzzles in the past 25 years. Improv also landed him a featured role for the Frameline32 Film Festival trailers as a game show contestant with perpetual wrong answers.Jonathan moved to Palm Springs in February 2014 with his mixed rescue terrier, Roopert, to re-invent himself. Improv has helped keep his spirits youthful (well, that and a good moisturizer) and energized. He performed with Andy Harmon's Acting Improv class at the 2014 Improv/Comedy Festival in Indio. He's always looking forward to making new friends as he offers locals the opportunity to sample the fun and joy that is Improvisational Theater. Improv builds community!Flexible thinking skills gained from Improv: * Increased self-confidence. * Enthused spirit. * Better coping with stressful situations. * Greater freedom of expression. * More spontaneity. * Thinking outside the box. * Creative solutions to challenges. * Letting go of control. * Getting out of your head and into the present. * Improved collaborative efforts = better teamwork. * Making new friends, both real and imaginary. To contact Jonathan or to join in the fun:Web: http://www.theimprovoasis.comPhone: 760-656-8338Photo: Copyright Wilkinson/2022Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

“The good thing about spay/neuter is one cat fixed: thousands saved. So you get one done, you can feel really good that night about what you've done. You don't have to have these big huge numbers to make a difference in your community, in your neighborhood.” This episode is sponsored in part by Humane Network, Doobert, and Maddie's Fund. Linda Chitwood is the volunteer director for the nonprofit charity Homeless Animals Relief Project (“HARP”), located in Senatobia, Mississippi. HARP's mission is to reduce cat suffering and overpopulation by providing free or very low-cost spay/neuter surgery to those with low income or caring for community cats. Since its inception in 1997, HARP has fixed over 20,000 cats. After moving from Memphis to rural Mississippi, Linda encountered a community without any animal welfare programs and she was compelled to take action. In her conversation with Stacy, Linda shares some of her experiences from her 25 years in animal welfare work and in operating a small nonprofit. Linda also discusses the book that she published, $5 For A Cat Head, which provides guidance on how to get started with TNR and what you can do as an individual in the community. This book also provides helpful advice in dealing with community members while trapping in different environments and other practical hands-on tips. In this discussion, Linda reminds us all to “never lose sight of the beauty and the wonder and the joy of the animals we're trying to help.” To learn more about HARP, visit their website. Linda's book can be found on BookBabyand the Kindle version can be found on Amazon. All of the proceeds from the sale of the book go to the animals served by HARP and will be used to fund spay/neuter surgeries. Today's show is all about recognizing our Veterans. Little did we know that most of our very own American Soldiers, after risking their lives, some of them, although not all, are coming home homeless, penniless, and worst, they feel forgotten. That is why we have here today, Miss Sandy Mc Nabb Bower (Founder and Volunteer Director of Vets Returning Home) to share how she got to the point of starting this organization that is helping our Veterans start their new life. Sandy will tell us the story of why she chose to start this organization, how and what her purpose is in helping our veterans in need. Our Veterans are asking for help, and they need us. They need you! They are not asking for a lot but, a little help is appreciated Suppose you are the person who has the heart for our veterans in need. Vets Returning Home's contact number is: Vets Returning Home Phone Number: 586-285-5606 You may also reach the founder herself through Phone Number: 586-216-8510 You could also send her an email at sandy@empirepays.com For more info on how you can sign up for their Sponsored Partnership Program, visit them at https://www.vetsreturninghome.org/spp Website: https://www.vetsreturninghome.org/ Topics covered: 1:30 - Introduction to Sandy Bower. Her reason and mission for starting this non-profit organization. 6:18: Let's see for ourselves. If you are in Michigan and would like to drop by and say hello, pay your respect to our heroic heroes. Sandy is inviting you to visit them at 17955 E Eleven Mile Rd, Roseville, MI 48066, United States. (Click the Address Link to load Google Map) 8:37 - How did this non-profit organization start? 13:01 - Amid this COVID crisis, how are they surviving? Sandy shares with us how. 23:27 - Sandy's tips for us, business owners, on how to survive the crisis. "For me, failure was not an option," - she says Key Takeaways "So I created this where if a business makes a commitment to the returning home, like a monthly commitment for because I'm really trying to build that residual, where no matter what happens with fundraising dinners and large gatherings and stuff, we need to survive no matter what. So the different thresholds are like there's a package for $25 a month, $50 a month, or $100 a month. And in exchange, because it's got to be a win-win. So, for the business that participates in our supporting partner program, I bought this plaque. So you get this plaque that says we're a proud supporter of Vets Returning Home with our logo. And then, they get a window cling, the same image, window cling's proud supporter, they get to put our logo on their website, and we put their logo on our website, we come out and do a live stream featuring their business, and encourage the community to help support their business while they're supporting our veterans." "The little train that could that's the biggest secret. The little train that could, and it's funny because when I share that, with so many of these younger ones that I mentor, they're like, Really? That's it?. I am dead serious. If you think you can, you can. If you tell yourself, oh, I don't think I can do that. Well then, guaranteed you will fail." In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Shannon Farrell about how she overcame diseases and how she is now giving back. Shannon shares her health history with us, but it’s more like her unhealthy history. She has too many diseases and too many medications to mention here. She was wheelchair bound and a perfect candidate for disability, but neither of those options were acceptable. Shannon walks us through her thought process and in the most inspiring way sends the message to never settle with life if it is not the way you are willing to accept. Today Shannon is an avid runner and monitors doctors, nurses, athletes and organizes groups so everyone can benefit from a healthy plant-based lifestyle. Shannon Farrell has over 27 years of experience in the medical field, including 18 years as a registered nurse in a multitude of roles. She prides herself on being a multidimensional health care provider to her patients and shares her vast knowledge obtained during her lengthy career. Shannon is currently an RN at the Beaumont Cardiac Rehabilitation centre in Michigan, in a unit that she helped build up from the ground level with a team of incredible coworkers. While working with patients to achieve their own maximal health and wellness, she realized the importance of her own health and the impact to teach others to live successfully with any type of chronic disease. She has lost over 85 pounds and experienced many benefits of following a healthier lifestyle, including an increase in energy level, reduced pain, and fewer disease flare ups. She enjoys all types of sports and loves supporting her own children at their sporting events. Tonight's special guest is Nikki DuBose from Los Angeles, a child abuse survivor who was later abused as a young professional model. Among other things, Nikki advocates on her web site for better regulation of the modeling industry (she tells me about 40% of models have an eating disorder and that there's a lot of sexual abuse/harassment). Nikki also works closely with Matt Sandusky at the "Peaceful Hearts Foundation," where she serves on the Executive Board and is their Volunteer Director. Nikki says, "I wholeheartedly believe that full recovery is possible, but it starts with speaking out and reducing the shame and stigma that is so often attached to mental health issues." In her upcoming memoir, "Washed Away: From Darkness to Light," due out later this year, Nikki details how being sexually abused as a child led to a seventeen-year battle with serious mental health issues such as eating disorders, depression, self-harm, body dysmorphic disorder, substance abuse and sexual addictions. During her career as a professional model, she encountered a great deal of success, yet that prosperity came with a high price - one that often mirrored the sexual abuse from her childhood. Coming to a place of full healing has not been easy for Nikki, but she says, "Being an advocate is what allows me to wake up every day and feel truly alive. All of that pain that I lived with for so many years is now channeled into making a difference in society. Whatever issues you're passionate about, use your voice and the resources you have; love yourself first and from there you can help to change the world."
