This month's podcast will address fatherhood, the longest-running African American holiday, Juneteenth, and Men mental health and sports. Juneteenth commemorates the official freedom of slavery. As for men and mental health, the two topics continue to remain at contrasting odds. Men have been categorized under the counseling-resistant population. The Help Show seeks to assist in bridging the gap associated with the stigma of mental health and connect people to other helpful resources and platforms.   NiEtta will host our podcast to help us understand the significance of fatherhood, masculinity in sports, and the dos and don'ts of managing your emotions. Effects of Social Media on Self-Esteem, Defensiveness

Hello One Life Radio listeners! Dr. Lori Whatley joins us today to talk about the effects of social media on self-esteem. Listen to the podcast for ways to protect your children, and yourself, from the insecurity brought on from too much social media. Learn about social self-harming, vanity validation and why social media is turning people into narcissists. Next, Von Eaglin defines defensiveness, and gives us real examples how it can help and harm our relationships. He says making excuses is the number one way to be defensive. Another way to be defensive is to argue about things you know you are wrong and try and blame the other person. A perfect example is when you say you’re late to a meeting because (insert excuse here). Von tells us we all have defense mechanisms and defensiveness to protect our ego. We need to learn how to self-soothe and learn to listen to criticism without getting too anxious. Listen to the show to learn ways to be less defensive. And, we all need to try and be less defensive online. The effects of social media on self-esteem are real, and we need to be conscious of what we say to ourselves and each other. Thanks to Dr. Whatley and Von for coming on the show today! And, thank you to our sponsors enviromedica, Castor & Pollux, the ISSN, Vegworld Magazine, Paleo Magazine and the Well Being Journal.

Happy Thursday! We have Jared Moffat From The Marijuana Policy Project talking about his organization. Von Eaglin is here to talk about friends in relationships. It has been a long week without live radio, so we are ready to deliver to you! We have a great show for you today, so let's get started? Jared Moffat Jared has been working to change marijuana laws since 2012 when he was an undergraduate at Brown University, helping to organize students to successfully decriminalize marijuana possession in Rhode Island. He joined the Marijuana Policy Project, or MPP, in 2014 as Rhode Island political director, Jared helped build an influential statewide coalition, Regulate Rhode Island, with the goal of legalizing marijuana like alcohol. He played a role in the 2016 Massachusetts legalization campaign as field director, and he was part of teams that successfully passed Michi- gan’s 2018 ballot initiative to legalize marijuana for adults as well as Utah’s 2018 medical marijuana measure. Most recently, Jared played a central role in the successful 2020 ballot initiative campaigns in Montana for adult-use legalization and South Dakota for legalization of both medical and adult-use marijuana. Marijuana Policy Project The mission of The Marijuana Policy Project is simple. MPP’s mission is to change federal law to allow states to determine their own marijuana policies without federal interference, to allow the medical use of cannabis in all 50 states and U.S. territories, and to regulate marijuana like alcohol. The Marijuana Policy Project changes laws and lives for the better. They activate people and mobilize resources to create lasting policy solutions that improve the quality of life for patients and their families, empower individuals with personal choice, combat injustices, and promote equality. Marijuana prohibition has failed in many ways. The goal of marijuana prohibition closely mimics that of when we prohibited alcohol in the early 1920's. Prohibition hasn't made it safer to access marijuana, but rather making it more dangerous for those states that have not legalized it. Fortunately, we are in an era that can study the affects of marijuana, thc, and cbd on the the brain and body. Von Eaglin Von Eaglin is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and works with two group practices in the Dallas area. He is a certified couple relationship trainer and sees a wide range of clients addressing men’s issues, anger management, abuse, and addiction; just to name a few. You can find him at his website or follow him on Instagram @VonTalks. Are Your Friends Helping or Hurting Your Relationship? Boys and Girls, and Men and Women process relationships and deal with friendships differently. Men seem to keep the game going with their other male friends. If one male fights another male, they just keep going and never get to the root of the problem. Females, on the other hand want to talk the problem out if there is one. Female relationships, on average, have a higher intimacy level, than with males. Some people believe that a man and woman can be friends, but sexual attraction is hard to ignore if it is there. Monitor your relationships and friendships closely, and do not be afraid to talk about it with your partner. Thank You! Thank you to Jared Moffat and Von Eaglin. She says that discipline is highly overrated. Beth doesn't think that discipline is bad. If you want the chips and queso eat them with friends. But, if you are eating an entire bag of chips by yourself or downing a bottle of wine by yourself, rethink your dopamine release. There's moderation in all things. Have a positive thought with your goals. Also, set reasonable goals by planning a cheat day or considering a day that you may "mess up" your cheat day. Not everything is going to be fun. But, have that subtle mindset shift where you make things fun. Even if something "sucks," find ways in the most buddhist way to makes things fun and find joy. Von's Solutions For Top Holiday Stressors Family issues and family pressures are definitely one of the biggest reasons for holiday stressors. There are a lot of expectations placed on us around the holidays that we fall into the happiness trap. The happiness trap is when we try so hard to be happy, that when we are not ecstatic, we are ultimately disappointed and end up being incredibly sad. Financial stress is another big holiday stressors. Use your creativity! Von says that for his Mother each year, he makes her a custom calendar! How cute and sweet! Children are very susceptible to adult stress. If the child is 5, maybe don't tell them that the bills are piling up. If the child is 14, a conversation about how might things really cost may be a good life lesson. There is a difference in being broke and poor. Broke means you have no money, poor is a state of mind. You always need to be able to differentiate the two to your self and to your children! Trisha Cunningham Trisha Cunningham is President and CEO of the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), a nonprofit focused on eradicating hunger in a diverse 13-county service area. It is estimated that more than 900,000 people in the North Texas area do not know where their next healthy meal is coming from. Cunningham and the NTFB team along with their partner agencies and thousands of volunteers provided access to almost 97 million meals last fiscal year. Prior to North Texas Food Bank, Cunningham was a 30-year global marketing, communications, branding, and public affairs executive at Texas Instruments where she most recently served as Chief Citizenship Officer. Cunningham currently serves as a director for Feeding Texas, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, and the International Women’s Forum (IWF) Dallas Chapter. The Texas National Guard is back at the North Texas Food Bank to provide additional help through December in our production lines and Mobile Pantry distributions. A resurgence in Coronavirus cases is increasing demand even further and according to Feeding Texas, Texas food banks estimate they will need to distribute approximately 80 million pounds of food per month over the next 6 months to keep pace with the demand. Food 4 Kids backpacks will be available to all students at our regular sites and we are removing the enrollment/referral process. Hunger is hidden. Trisha says that The North Texas Food Bank usually served the working poor, like the person who checks you out at the grocery store, or you favorite waiter or waitress. Civility Rules! Being civil in this kind of world is respecting others, being empathetic, being compassionate, and so much more. 10 years ago Shelby started her journey towards turning everyone civil. She started writing exclusively about political civility and went from there. Shelby found that she could not find much political civil common ground, as the government is not designed to allow much civility if people disagree. Bernadette brought up the topic of the past presidential debate, where our country was humiliated. We the people were publicly disrespected by both sides, as no one won the debate that night, but someone lost. Us. An aspect of being civil is trying to understand other people's point of view and experiences. Intelectual humility is when we come to the table saying we have so much self esteem that we can promote a point of view, but we still believe that we could be wrong. We need to find that teeter totter in the middle where we can listen to learn. Things change and go out of style, but being courteous never will. The best way to understand one another is to ask clarifying questions. Humility isn't thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less. Disagreement is how we achieve the goals of issues. Be civil! Be civil! The Truths and Myths About Dysfunctional Relationships Dysfunction in relationships is more negativity than positivity. There is often a lot of high tensions, gaslighting, high ego, and fragility in relationships that are dysfunctional. Bernadette brings up that it is hard to be in a relationship with someone who is a narcissist. Bernadette says that she has never cheated in a relationship but she never will judge someone else. We never know what is going on behind closed doors, so we can not judge. Dysfunctional relationships are often tumultuous with very high highs and very low lows. To find out if your relationship is dysfunctional, be sure to listen to both of Von's segments! Thank You! A big thank you to our guests, Shelby Scarbrough and Von Eaglin! Happy Thursday! It's dysfunctional relationship day here at One Life Radio! Bernadette speculates over 50% of the population struggle with their relationships. Renaldo guesses 98%! We have a great show in store with Denna Babul and Von Eaglin, so let's jump right in! Denna Babul Denna Babul is a relationship expert, author, TV personality and public speaker. She is the Founder of the Fatherless Daughter Movement, and an award-winning author of “The Fatherless Daughter Project: Understanding Our Losses and Reclaiming Our Lives.” In Denna’s latest book “Love Strong: Change Your Narrative, Change Your Life, and Take Your Power Back!” she uses her years of experience as a relationship coach and her personal experience to give people with relationship dilemmas a guide to taking their power back. Through her work, Denna has helped thousands of clients get the love they want. How to Love Someone Dealing with A Mental Health Crisis It is possible to have a relationship with someone dealing with a mental health crisis. 1 in 5 people have a mental illness! Mental illness looks like many different things. If you are in a relationship with someone struggling with mental illness, you will typically feel it in your gut first. COVID-19 is definitely making dating harder. Denna says to never call a woman crazy! Typically, crazy is just passionate. It is about how to funnel that passion into something healthy. After a relationship, women are typically left looking for themselves because they put so much into someone else. Narcissism is pretty big in our society. When you can't find out who you are, so when you can't find out where you start and end, you experience confusion. Denna says that most people don't know that they are a narcissist or have BPD, so the beginning of the relationship is typically easy. People don't love to go to therapy, because they associate therapy with craziness. When writing "Love Strong," Denna wanted people to look at their past and present. Find a relationship mentor and ask them all your relationship questions! Bernadette asks how you can know when your partner has a mental health issue. Denna says that anxiety, fear, or withdrawing is mild, but once someone has a thought to end their life, you need to step in. Go to Denna's website and take the free quiz about how strong you're loving! He is also a doctoral candidate at the University of North Texas in the Counseling and Higher Education Department. His Ph.D. research focuses on on couple relationships dialogue. You can find him at his website or follow him on Instagram @VonTalks. Healthy vs Unhealthy Attachments In Relationships Therapists from a long time ago hypothesized that attachments in romantic relationships stem from how much attachment you formed as a child. Interesting! Your parents play a major role in how you attach to your partner. If your parents were really responsive to you, you typically will have a secure attachment style. Anxious attachment style is when your parents were typically not consistent with their responsiveness. In an adult relationship, that will manifest in a different way. The biggest type of attachment is avoidance attachments, so the parent was very distant at all times. Avoidance manifests in bad ways when adults enter romantic relationships. Don't fret! There are healthy ways for adults to attach in relationships. Someone who is avoidant will avoid contact and generally avoid letting you get too close to them! People who have avoidant attachment style will act out when they want attention in the relationship. They will typically start fights out of nowhere to get attention.

Happy Thursday! Bernadette is out of breathe right from the start! She is just so excited for todays show! Von Eaglin is on at the half to talk about understanding vs empathy. But first, Zen Honeycutt of Mom's Across America! He is also a doctoral candidate at the University of North Texas in the Counseling and Higher Education Department. His Ph.D. research focuses on on couple relationships dialogue. You can find him at his website or follow him on Instagram @VonTalks. Understanding vs Empathy Empathy is an intellectual test. There are four steps for empathy! Perspective taking is where you take the perspective of another person. Number 2 is staying out of judgement. You have to work towards staying out of judgement to understand the other persons feelings and struggles. 3 and 4 is recognizing emotions in other people, and being about to communicate. You need to try and ask a lot of open ended questions to understand the other person. For Bern, taking an intellectual interest in someone is love. Von says you should, but just because you love somebody doesn't mean you have the capacity to be empathetic towards them. Fun fact, women that complain more earlier in their relationships tend to have longer and better relationships. The more you know! Use "I feel" statements to complain. Avoid criticisms and over-generalizations. Avoid "You always" and "You never" because those are general and broad. Understanding and empathy are not the safe. Understanding shows you cognitively understand what the other person is trying to convey. Empathy takes something more in the listener. Empathy requires feeling for the other person and trying to feel with them, not just feel for them. Zen Honeycutt and Moms Across America Zen Honeycutt is an activist, speaker, author, and the founder and director of Moms Across America, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate and empower mothers and others with actions and solutions to create healthy communities. While heading Moms Across America, Zen initiated the first testing for glyphosate in tap water, breast milk, and urine and spearheaded the non-profit’s successful petition to Costco to remove Roundup from their shelves. She is the author of “UNSTOPPABLE: Transforming Sickness and Struggle into Triumph, Empowerment And A Celebration of Community.” Are Online Remote Classes Harmful For Children? Children are spending 3-5 hours a day on their laptops, even first graders! Children are especially vulnerable from EMFs coming from electronic devices. 33000 to 2.5 million microwaves per square meter. 10-100 is what is safe, for adults! Bernadette warns about microwaves well, and admits that she only uses her microwave as a bread box! The people who make the devices, so the microwaves, phones, etc, only look at certain periods of times for how they affect their users. We have to start mitigating the impact. Parents can take steps to make remote learning safer. You can buy shielded Ethernet cords and adapters for your phone and laptop that can be plugged into your router. Once you find the login information, you can log in to the ethernet safe website and toggle the settings to protect you and your children from dangerous EMF's. Click here to "Get Hard Wired" and find the steps to become safe from EMFs. Have you heard of Wifi on wheels? Wifi on Wheels is a truck that provides poor families with free wifi. Zen warns against these trucks because they could be harming children and their families. Thank You! A big thank you to our guests, Von Eaglin and Zen Honeycutt. Happy Thursday! We are happy it is almost the weekend! Bernadette encourages us all to read our labels! Don't get frosted by pretty packaging! Bernadette got her youngest a PSL this morning and left her wondering how much sugar was in one. There are 50 grams of sugar in a Grande Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks! That's 11.9 teaspoons of sugar! Be ware about how much sugar you're giving your kiddos. Speaking of Kiddos, we have Dr. Lori Whatley with us today, and new dad Von Eaglin on today! Dr. Lori Whatley Dr. Lori Whatley is a clinical psychologist and relational therapist who specializes in the effects of excessive digital device usage. Dr. Whatley has over 25 years of clinical experience and has specialized in digital device usage for the past 10 years. Her latest book "Connected & Engaged: How to Manage Digital Distractions and Reconnect with the World Around You" takes a look at the toll excessive digital device usage has on our lives—and what we can do about it. Do You Push Your Child Academically? This is an important question we need to ask! Bernadette's own daughter shared that students are now more reluctant to help other students with their homework because student rank has become so important in High Schools. Dr. Lori says we can not live that way. Bernadette suggests that parents raise and hold difference values of academics over their children. Dr. Lori thinks that every parent wants their child to be successful, but every parent has a different definition of success. Parents project those different ideas of success onto them. Play is a child's work! Dr. Lori says remember that. Dr. Lori says that our children slip further away from fundamental tools each day. We must send our children out into the world with a full toolbox! Not just a perfect GPA. A perfect GPA can only get you so far. Life skills keep you alive. The word Dr. Whatley urges us to use instead of "push" is "encourage." When we push, we get negative effects. High School is tough, and there are so many stressors! Teenagers don't talk to parents as much as they should, but that doesn't mean that you should push. Let your child talk to you by removing digital devices from the cars. Don't let your teen text all the way home, let them decompress and talk. Listen. There are physiological signs that your child is overwhelmed in school; stomach aches, headaches, etc. Sharing is important. Someone is always listening and looking for a story to relate to. Good news is, colleges are beginning to look at more than just GPA's, but more the whole person. Have open communication between parents. Bridge the gap. The most important takeaway is to listen! Listen to your children! Von Eaglin Von Eaglin is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and works with two group practices in the Dallas area. He is a certified couple relationship trainer and sees a wide range of clients addressing men's issues, anger management, abuse, and addiction; just to name a few. He is also a doctoral candidate at the University of North Texas in the Counseling and Higher Education Department. His Ph.D. research focuses on on couple relationships dialogue. You can find him at his website or follow him on Instagram @VonTalks. The Danger of Denial Denial means someone who is confronted with a personal problem that they are trying to avoid. Really, it's about your ego. When you are in a highly stressful situation, you go into denial to shut it down in your body. Being in denial allows you to put the issue off and not address it. The father of psycho therapy, Sigmund Freud came up with many different definition types of denial. Some people take out their anger on the wrong person, like their partner instead of talking to the person they really have a problem with. Another type of denial is  displacement. Displacement would be the person who would come home and kick the dog instead of addressing their problems. Denial is blocking your feelings to keep your ego in tact.

Happy Thursday! Happy Thursday from everyone here at One Life Radio! It's psychology day! We sure are ready for the weekend! Bernadette talks about her crazy dog-filled house and the importance of having strong muscles while having so many animals. You never know when you need to be nimble, so here's the reminder you need to work out and keep yourself strong! Robin Perry Braun Robin talks about her new book, "Thrive." Robin wrote new new book after years in a marriage with sex addiction while she struggled with eating disorders. "Thrive" is a personal journey of finding answers for herself turned into a book to help everyone. Bernadette asks if sex additions are harder to overcome than other addictions like alcohol. Food and Sex addictions are different than alcohol and drug addictions. Food and Sex addictions are more complex because they are not black and white and not simply a substance. Bernadette says that alcohol seems the hardest addiction to overcome because it is everywhere. Robin believes in quantum energy, so energy comes from everything. Robin says that using this, she can be with her thoughts all day and work on herself. Bernadette asks if you have to be Christian to benefit from her book and learn from The Law Of Attraction. Robin urges non-Christians to open their minds and that there are benefits for gnostic and agnostic people alike. Collective consciousness is about getting a large enough number of people to focus on one thing, we can manifest our wants. Without getting into the sciences behind it, Robin explains quantum physics. Von Eaglin and Cheating Von Eaglin is here and is doing great as a new dad! Bernadette asks the penultimate question, why do people cheat? Cheating is a violation of trust. Cheating is sexual or emotional intimacy outside of the relationship with two partners. There is some subjectivity to this, but Von draws the line in the dirt saying that cheating is violating trust. Women are actually cheating more than men nowadays. With social media more accessible, this is one of the driving factors in that violation of trust. Our identity is challenged when people cheat. When people get betrayed, PTSD is even a possibility. There are a few kinds of cheating. Opportunistic cheating means cheating because the opportunity presents itself. The obligatory cheater tries to refuse the sexual advances from someone, but will sometimes go ahead and cheat because they feel an expectation.  Romantic cheating is when someone cheats because they feel swept up in romantic antics and actions. There is a difference between just a cheater, and a compulsive cheater. Gaslighting makes you question your own reality. Click here to read more about gaslighting and when to point it out. Bernadette asks if sex addiction and cheating are related. Is sex addiction an excuse for cheating? Von Eaglin says NO! Sex addiction is like every other addiction, and like drug and alcohol dependencies, we can relapse. Thank You! A big thank you to our guests, Robin Perry Braun and Von Eaglin. Terrific Tuesday! Happy Tuesday everyone! We have a great show in store for you all. CEO of Enviromedica, Jared Ramirez is here to discuss soil based probiotics. Longtime friend of the show Von Eaglin is here to talk about raising children successfully. Jared Ramirez Jared Ramirez breaks down the types of probiotics. Spore-based were introduced about twenty years ago. The probiotic industry has been dogmatic over the past two decades. Ramirez says that the kind of probiotics found in yogurts and other food products are very sensitive and die off easily. If you order through Amazon, their warehouses can get up to over 100 degrees, which will kill off many types of bacteria. Spore-based probiotics can stand heat and other elements. You can send spore-based probiotics into space and they’ll come back the same. You can bake with them by putting them in your bread. But, all probiotics have a purpose. Fermented foods are good for you, but the bacteria is sensitive so you have to be careful how it’s prepared. If you ferment your own food, you can have trillions of bacteria versus billions in most store bought probiotic foods. Try fermenting some of your favorites like sauerkraut, kimchi, and kombucha! Check out some of our favorite recipes here. Von Eaglin  Von Eaglin joins us to talk about his new addition to the family and parenting in general. He says the male needs to be attentive throughout the pregnancy, birth and afterwards. There are many parenting behaviors to avoid. He says a child’s emotional regulation is key. Parents can do a lot to help kids become emotionally intelligent. If a child can’t manage their emotions, they can’t make healthy decisions. The language parents use should never be judgmental. The child can also read your face. Even at a young age, parents need to interact with their child. Emotion dismissive parents expect their children to change their emotions quickly. They want cheerful children, and have a hard time labeling emotions. You should never punish your child for having emotions. Validate their feelings instead. Emotion coaching parents understand emotion and use that as an opportunity to connect with their child. They will help their children articulate their feelings. Let your child feel emotions. It will make them smarter! Thank You! A big thank you to our guests, Jared Ramirez and Von Eaglin.
