Ian K. Smith is the principal of Christ College, Sydney, where he also teaches Greek and New Testament. He has also served in parish ministry and as a missionary in the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. He speaks regularly at churches, conferences, and other venues.Jesus's proclamation about the kingdom of God is concerned with this world. When Jesus claimed “my kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36), he was not referring to the domain over which he rules. Hopefully the kingdom of God makes an impact in this world! The Gospels clearly identify two kingdoms, but the division is not between sacred and secular; the division is between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan (Luke 11:14–22). The ministry of Jesus disarms and defeats the kingdom of this world over which Satan rules. The day will come when heaven will declare that “the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ” (Rev. 11:15).In the meantime, the division is not between a sacred kingdom and a secular kingdom. The effects of sin can be just as sorely felt in the church as in the workplace. Similarly, the effects of the kingdom of God can be lived out on Mondays as well as on Sundays. Jesus is Lord over all. He is committed to his creation. The renewal of the earth means we are committed to the things of the earth.Creation and new creation are the bookends of the Bible. God is concerned for the renewal of this earth. Christian ministry is not just about telling people how to get into heaven when they die, essential though that is. It is also concerned for what happens in this world. Telling people the way of salvation is of foundational importance. Without repentance of sins and submission to the Lordship of Jesus, nothing else makes sense. But that is not the end of the story. If we acknowledge that the Christian's hope is the renewal of all things, it gives meaning to life. Christian communities are commended for the way they bless the places where they live (Phil. 2:15; Col. 4:5–6; 1 Thess. 4:11–12; Tit. 2:9–10). If our lives are transformed by the power of the gospel, our workplaces, families, marriages, friendships, and world will be impacted. God is concerned for this physical world. A good question for every church to ask is, If our church were to close down, would anyone in our neighborhood notice the difference? For more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. Although metabolism is still not fully understood, its implications for how we gain and lose weight and its impact on our overall health have never been more important in our need to prevent and identify causes for various conditions. In fact:-The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciencesc urrently recognizes more than 500 metabolic disorders.-A 2019 seminal study on metabolic health published by researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that only 12 percent (one out of eight) of US adults have optimal metabolic health. But where there's a challenge, there's also tremendous opportunity. In response, a science based "Met Flex" (short for Metabolic flexibility) program from #1 New York Times bestselling author and Harvard alum Dr.Ian Smith is publishing on April 4, 2023 from HarperCollins/Harvest. Dr. Ian says, "After very quickly learning the definition and physiologic underpinning of this term, I thought about those carb statements I'd been hearing for years but never fully understood. Metabolic flexibility addresses the body's ability (or inability) to switch from burning carbs to burning fats and vice versa. I had one of those eureka moments as the last twist of the bulb finally turned on the light in my brain. What all of these people (and I'm sure millions of others) have been feeling and describing is a state of metabolic inflexibility....with this six-week program, you become your own mechanic." Dr. Ian shares how what we have largely believed to be indisputable facts about metabolism have been refuted in the Journal of Science ("Daily Energy Expenditure through the Human Life Course";August 2021). The major findings include that the belief that all of our metabolisms start to slow down at 30 is not true. Rather we have FOUR life stages of metabolism that highlight:-people between ages 20-60 generally have stable metabolisms-there aren't really any differences between men/women when you control for size/muscle.
Although metabolism is still not fully understood, its implications for how we gain and lose weight and its impact on our overall health have never been more important in our need to prevent and identify causes for various conditions. "The little guy in this country doesn't have a shot at success," said Dr. Ian K. Smith. "And if the little guy actually knew he didn't have a shot, there would be a revolution in this country." From secret societies to revolution to race, Karen Hunter covers the gamut with Dr. Ian K. Smith.
This week I’m joined by Dr. Ian K. Smith. Many of us know Dr. Ian from his various appearances on Celebrity Fit Club, The View, as corresponding anchor on NBC news and anchor contributor to HealthWatch. He’s also a New York Times best selling author, having written 16 books with the 17th releasing soon - keep an eye out for Clean and Lean: 30 Days, 30 Foods, A New You!He takes us on a journey of truth and we do a bit of a deep dive into his book, Ancient Nine. It’s the most autobiographical of his books, about a kid from the other side of the tracks who is mysteriously invited to join one of Harvard’s ancient, elite, secret societies where he unknowingly and unwittingly joins the process to try out for membership. This story was a 20 year work in progressTune to hear Dr. Ian drops gem after gem about the importance of hard work, the power of relationships, and living life on full blast.Host: Dr. Seku GathersGuest: Dr. Ian K. SmithResources:Dr. Ian Smith - website@doctoriansmith - Instagram@driansmith - TwitterDr. Ian Smith - FacebookThe Ancient Nine - FacebookThe Ancient Nine - AmazonThe Road to 20 Challenge - FacebookClean & Lean: 30 Days, 30 Foods, a New You! - Amazon (Pre Order)Time Stamps: [3:28] Personal & Professional Truth: Dr. Ian talks about his third year in medical school when he was going through rotations in various disciplines. During a particular rotation, he was called into the office of one of the professors on service - a meeting he thought was going to result in a mentorship or him receiving kudos on his work. Turns out, he was told that he was carrying himself and dressing in a manner that was above his station. This was a tricky moment for Ian. He had been dressing well to present himself in the most professional light. In that moment, he had to figure out what was truly going in with the conversation and how to best handle it (he typically has a very direct approach) without jeopardizing his grade. Ian chose to tread lightly - he thanked the professor for sharing and explained that he dressed that way because he wanted to put his best foot forward. It was then that he realized the truth, he is not someone who can operate well in a hierarchy. That instance taught him, very early on, that being in the hierarchy of medicine, in a traditional sense, wasn’t his path - especially in situations where he’d have to hold his tongue for the sake of being politically correct.[12:19]Hard Work and Motivation: Dr. Ian explains that he’s a very motivated person. He likes to work, likes the feeling of working and likes what it brings him; he feels better when he works for it. I asked him about his Instagram post “I may not be as good as you but I will outwork you,” and he said it’s how he’s won the game. He will work and work, this is something he tries to impart to his followers, particularly those seeking weight loss transformations; you have to work hard for what you want in life. Dr. Ian says putting in that effort and yielding your result tastes so much sweeter and feels so much better.[23:06]Leave Something in the Tank: We talked about his writing process; he says his writing is zone like and he’s constantly in the flow. He offered a key piece of advice: he makes sure that when he’s done writing, he doesn’t stop when he runs out of ideas, he stops where he still has more to tell. This is done so that he has somewhere to pick up the next day. Dr. Ian doesn’t run his tank down to E, he leaves with about a ¼ remaining and that has stopped him from getting writers block, helping him to continue to create. His advice to young writers is to spend time just writing and then go back to make your edits. Trying to do, what his son calls, “surgery” on your writing while in the midst of creating can be challenging to the process.[30:01]Doctors and Artists: Dr. Ian and I share similar passions for art and medicine, this struck me when I read that he calls himself an artist and I asked when he came to that realization. At nine years old he knew he wanted to be a doctor and that he was a very creative person. He knew that his life was going to be involved in story in some form. During his first year in college his aunt, who is an avid reader, told him to pick up The Firm. That book was a game changer for him, the story was so gripping - he knew that he wanted to create story to ignite those same feelings that he had while reading the book.Yes or BSDr. Ian Smith prefers wearing the goatee?Weight loss is primarily psychological? In life shooting your shot is always the right choice? The number one status symbol for men is settling down and starting a family?Dr. Ian K.
