A middle school student in Collin County has tested positive for measles, health officials confirmed Wednesday, the first reported case in a child in the Dallas-Fort Worth area this year amid an outbreak of cases in Texas. The student attends Willow Springs Middle School in Lucas, part of the Lovejoy Independent School District, according to Collin County Health Care Services. In other news, the North Texas Food Bank announced Wednesday that Annam Manthiram has joined its executive leadership team as its new chief external affairs officer; “softness” in demand from domestic leisure travelers stung Southwest Airlines during the first quarter as the Dallas-based carrier pushed ahead with turnaround plans that include fees for checked bags and premium seating in the coming months. On Wednesday, Southwest Airlines reported a $149 million net loss between January and March on $6.4 billion in revenue; and Dallas' Planning and Development Department will change how it calculates commercial remodeling permit fees after losing $8.6 million because of a staff error. In this heartfelt conversation, Alex Snodgrass, founder of The Defined Dish and bestselling cookbook author, opens up about what success truly means beyond the metrics of social media followers and book sales. From her surprising transition out of real estate to finding her purpose through food blogging, Alex shares how she built a thriving business while staying true to her core values. She candidly discusses the challenges of balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship, the importance of setting boundaries in the digital age, and her decision to step back from lucrative opportunities to preserve authenticity. While the Texas Rangers battle the Arizona Diamondbacks on the field during the World Series, The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) is joining forces with The Tarrant Area Food Bank (TAFB) in a friendly competition with St. Mary's Food Bank in Phoenix to see which metropolitan area can raise more funds to “strikeout hunger” in our communities.  Both metropolitan areas face high rates of food insecurity. The 970,000 people in the DFW area who struggle with food insecurity would fill Globe Life Field more than 24 times, and tragically one-third of that number are children.  Historic inflation rates cause many families to make tough decisions, often choosing between purchasing food and securing other necessities, such as utilities, rent and medications — and food should never have to be a choice. Right now, the NTFB and TAFB are providing access to more meals than at the height of the pandemic.  The DFW community is encouraged to join the North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank to help strikeout hunger in our area. Go to strikeouthungerntx.org to make your gift in honor of the Texas Rangers. If you are an Arizona Diamondback fan you can also donate to St. Mary's at https://www.firstfoodbank.org.  The funds will not only help each city feed its communities but will also give the winning community bragging rights. The CEO(s) of the losing food bank(s) will wear the winning team's jersey for a day.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Fundraising Talent Podcast
What expectations should fundraising have of the board?

The Fundraising Talent Podcast

My conversation today with Gretchen reminded me of some of the observations that I have made concerning boards and fundraising. Throughout my career I have noticed two consistent yet disparate themes that I suspect those with even a brief tenure in fundraising will be familiar with. The first is what we might call “board knows best”: board members whose inclination is to always assume the existence of expertise that the fundraiser doesn't have and therefore they must provide. The second theme, perhaps a defense mechanism in response to the first, is what we might call “blame the board” which is the tendency of nonprofit leaders and their fundraisers to scapegoat the board for all the reasons fundraising isn't working. Neither storyline is particularly helpful, and I am hopeful that our listeners have the benefit of working for organizations that have matured beyond both of them.  Today's deliberation of board dynamics with Gretchen was much enjoyed. Perhaps a bit uncertain of where we were going at first, we arrived at an ideal where the board is advancing rather interfering with our fundraising efforts. We compared notes on where we have seen board members contribute in meaningful ways and where all they can seem to do is get in the way. If your organization is trying to reconcile the expectations you have (and don't have) of board members when it comes to fundraising, don't miss today's conversation on The Fundraising Talent Podcast. As always, we are especially grateful to our friends at CueBack for sponsoring The Fundraising Talent Podcast. And, a special thank you to Erica Yaeger and her team at the North Texas Food Bank for hosting our roadshow earlier this week. Your partnership is very much appreciated.

Legal Grounds | Conversations on Life, Leadership & Law

I've often said on this podcast that some of the truest tests of leadership happen during a crisis. But even if you're someone who thrives in high-stakes situations, there is inevitably what I'll call, “the drop.”  You can only run at full steam for so long … Trust me. So, what would you do if your job was to manage a crisis that was never-ending? That kind of leadership is unique and it's something my guest, Brad Stewart, has in spades. Brad is the Chief Operating Officer of the North Texas Food Bank, which last year alone provided nearly 100 Million meals for people experiencing food insecurity. They have been on the frontline of the hunger crisis for almost 40 years, but even they were surprised by the scale of need we would experience in our communities. And still, they persevered. Brad and I discuss his journey to servant leadership, the lessons to be learned by taking risks, and the resilience that can be built when a team steps up together. Enjoy the show!_______________________________________________________________TO GET YOUR FIRM INVOVED IN PARTNERS4HOPE – CLICK HERE!

Feeding more San Antonians each week than the capacity of the Alamodome and AT&T Center combined, there's no shortage of work for the San Antonio Food Bank. That's why CEO Eric Cooper is actively speaking to Congress and Governor Greg Abbott, hoping to improve and retain programs that serve more than 120,000 people per week. Cooper is this week's guest on the ‘San Antonio's Voice' podcast, talking with Randy Beamer about his increased lobbying on behalf of San Antonio during the pandemic. They also talk about the new faces receiving food and why some unemployed families still can't get fed. The reason may surprise you. Also in the podcast, Cooper blames low paying jobs and racism for San Antonio's hunger problem, adding that it's wrong the Food Bank serves as a safety net caused by them. Plus, the former missionary and Boy Scout reveals his personal experience with homelessness and how it helped change his life. Cooper joined the San Antonio Food Bank in 2001 as the youngest executive director in the history of the organization. The Food Bank helps provide food to Texans in a 16-county service area and employs 250 people. Cooper serves on a variety of committees focused on food and nutrition. Before arriving in San Antonio, Cooper was a product donations manager at the North Texas Food Bank. Eric Cooper moved to San Antonio in 2001 to take over the San Antonio Food Bank and get it on the right path. In his time at the SA Food Bank, the non-profit has raise a lot of money, added many programs, and has made it their mission to provide food for today, food for tomorrow and food for a lifetime. Eric Cooper is heartwarming, loving, and genuinely cares about his mission and the San Antonio Food Bank's success. Transcript: [music] Justin Hill: Hello and Bienvenido, San Antonio. Welcome to The Alamo Hour, discussing the people, places, and passion that make our city. My name is Justin Hill, a local attorney, a proud San Antonian, and keeper of chickens and bees. On The Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique and the best-kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. All right. Welcome to The Alamo Hour. Today's guest is Eric Cooper. Eric is the executive director of the San Antonio Food Bank and currently serving in somewhat of a role as a little bit of a national spokesperson for food and security as a result of the crisis and as a result of some press that San Antonio got. He joined the San Antonio Food Bank in 2001 and has since taken it from really being on somewhat of a tenuous footing to really a robust, important, and surprisingly, oddly, well-funded nonprofit in the city. I was doing some research on you. Before this crisis, 58,000 people a week got help. 77 million meals a year, to me, kind of a nerd about things. 2% overhead for y'alls budget. That's something that unless people really pay attention, you don't realize how important that is and how really a compliment to your management skills. Thank you for being here. I want to get into some of these things, but thank you for being here. I can't imagine your time commitment, so I'm glad we got a little bit of it. Eric Cooper: Hey, super excited to be on the show. It's a great city and we're just so privileged to be a part of it. Justin: I think that's a great city. That's why I started this whole thing. You and I were sort of joking how you got these San Antonio stories. I moved here and I've met a weird, fascinating array of characters and I was hoping to share that through this show. We haven't met before, but you're in such a big spotlight right now. I knew about the San Antonio Food Bank. I've learned so much more about it, so I want to talk to you about it. First, I'm going to put you through sort of our top 10 list we go through to get some color commentary on who you are as a person. I've read a bunch of your interviews before you got here today. I want to-- Eric: Sorry about that. [chuckles] Justin: Well, a lot of it, I don't want to retrace steps. Some of it, I want to get some new information. When and why did you move to San Antonio? Eric: Well, I've been in food banking for about eight years. I actually got my start in Salt Lake City at the Utah Food Bank and then made my way back home to North Texas. I grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. There was an opportunity to serve with the North Texas Food Bank which, at that time, they had their facility in South Oak Cliff. I was there a couple of years and had watched as the San Antonio Food Bank somewhat struggled. We went through about four CEOs in a two-year period. Two of them had gotten fired and the other two had quit. The board was struggling. The food bank was struggling. I figured I couldn't screw it up any worse and they offered me the job at that point. I became their youngest executive director. I love an opportunity and I just saw such an opportunity to serve people in need. I knew I was going to dedicate my life towards putting food on the table for families. As I had traveled South Texas and seeing some of our border communities, it's some of the most extreme poverty in the United States. I knew I wanted to serve an area that had that need. When the opportunity arose, the board...

Amy Walton is from Texas, where she spent 15 years managing nonprofits like the North Texas Food Bank and the Jewish Family Service. Last year, she launched modTEXAS, an initiative to draw attention to Texas modernism and celebrate the people and institutions working to preserve it. Building a coalition of over a dozen nonprofits using social media, modTEXANS have shared thousands of images of midcentury design and architecture that can literally be mapped across the state. When you think of Albuquerque, New Mexico, you might think of southwest adobe design, or maybe that TV show In Plain Sight which filmed there for five years, but you’re certainly not thinking of Modernist architecture – yet. Thea Haver is hoping to change that as co-founder and director of Modern Albuquerque. Co-host Paige Wagoner Claassen is an architectural historian with the popular Instagram feed Claasshaus, seeking out meaning, beauty, and significance in buildings and history in objects. Co-host Wayne Pond's melodious voice hosted an interview show called Soundings based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina from 1980 to 1997, interviewing journalists, poets, novelists, documentary film makers, musicians, governors, members of Congress, and tech leaders about their work in the arts, education, ethics, literature, religion, politics, music, philosophy, and even architecture. The shows live on at at the National Humanities Center iTunes site.

I wanted to lift up the community with [these skills that I had been so fortunate to get]. If you look at all the global work that we did, the one unifying factor was hunger.”  LINKS:   Trisha Cunningham https://www.linkedin.com/in/trishacunningham/   North Texas Food Bank https://ntfb.org/   Fairview, Texas http://fairviewtexasedc.com/home.aspx   Lovejoy Independent School District https://www.lovejoyisd.net/
