Summary: In this episode of Be a Smarter Homeowner, hosts Beth Dodson and John Bodrozic explore how AI technology is transforming the way homeowners prepare for severe weather events. They discuss how HomeZada now uses AI to deliver real-time alerts based on your exact property location — not just your city or zip code — helping you act faster when dangerous weather is on the way. Beth and John walk through how the system pulls data from the National Weather Service, translates it into specific, actionable recommendations, and even helps homeowners proactively assess risks like floods, wildfires, hurricanes, hailstorms, and high winds before disaster strikes. They explain how the AI goes beyond just warnings — offering preparation advice, emergency kit checklists, and even insurance insights tailored to your region. Whether you're new to an area, unfamiliar with local weather patterns, or just busy with everyday life, this episode shows why early preparation is critical — and how smarter tools can help you protect your home, your property, and your family. If you've ever wondered what more you could be doing to be ready for the unexpected, this episode is packed with real solutions. NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) has provided manual translations of weather forecasts and warnings in Spanish for the past 30 years, but now the agency has a new tool to be more accurate, efficient and equitable. Through a series of pilot projects over the past few years, NWS forecasters have been training artificial intelligence (AI) software for weather, water and climate terminology in Spanish and Simplified Chinese, the most common languages in the United States after English. NWS will add Samoan and Vietnamese next, and more languages in the future. Two of the nearly dozen locations where these AI-translated severe weather bulletins are being tested are in the Carolinas. This week, James Brierton talks with Chris Rohrbach, a meteorologist and web developer at the National Weather Service in Columbia, South Carolina, where this artificial intelligence experiment is being tested alongside locations such as Greenville-Spartanburg, SC. You're invited to try out the translated severe weather bulletins at https://weather.gov/translate. NOAA wants your feedback. You can e-mail ws.translate@noaa.gov before September 29, 2024. #northcarolina #southcarolina #weather #ncwx #scwx

By 2060, nearly 1 in 3 Americans will be able to speak Spanish. Previous National Weather Service assessments have linked casualties and fatalities to faulty communication in Spanish. Joseph Trujillo Falcón, a research scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Cooperative Institute with the National Severe Storm Labatory in Norman, Oklahoma, and a meteorologist for MyRadar, comes on the show to talk to the weather team about his goals. Falcón, 25, says that translating weather alerts from English to Spanish is more than putting it through an online translator. Different words mean different things, depending on where in the Spanish-speaking world you are from. Furthermore, the culture of weather forecasting is less prominent than in the United States. He takes us through the issues, and solutions he's working on. Google Maps is to start providing tailored directions depending on what type of vehicle you're driving. A new software update will take into account hybrid and electric vehicles and offer the most efficient path. Users will be asked to give details of their vehicle and the experience will be optimised from then on. On the subject of cars - Amazon Garage is a useful feature if you're using the online shopping giant. If you're browsing for products but aren't sure they'll fit your vehicle you can enter the registration number and it'll only show products which will be suitable. I know that other retailers are doing this on their websites - it isn't just Amazon. The intense heat is going to be the big story through the first half of this week. As well as the website at metoffice.gov.uk the Met Office has an official weather app and you can stay on top of the latest advice and warnings by checking @metoffice on Twitter. Guest: Joseph Trujillo FalcónBilingual communities across the country are at a disadvantage when weather warnings are issued because the current infrastructure does not adequately translate the weather terminology into Spanish. Some progress has been made in recent years, but there is still a long way to go. Our next guest on Weather Geeks, Joseph Trujillo Falcón, is working to bridge the gap between weather warnings and bilingual communities…See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Tornado season is here which has us thinking how people react to bad conditions. Kim Klockow-McClain from the University of Oklahoma studies how people respond to severe weather alerts, and joins us to discuss the risks of over-warning and how social media has impacted the communication of critical weather information. Klockow-McClain is a research scientist and Societal Applications Coordinator with the Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS) at the University of Oklahoma and the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). Her research involves behavioral science focused on weather and climate risk, and specifically explores the effects of risk visualization on judgment, and perceptions of severe weather risk from place-based and cognitive perspectives. Before joining CIMMS/NSSL, Klockow-McClain was a UCAR Postdoctoral Researcher and Policy Advisor at the NOAA OAR Office of Weather and Air Quality. She completed her undergraduate education at Purdue University and graduate education at the University of Oklahoma.
