Orange fingers of flame gripped the Ark like a slender fiery hand as the battered ship plummeted through the upper atmosphere. Flecks of carbon tore from thermal plating and flashed as they burned up in the ship’s wake. A mile from the surface, the Ark’s retro booster burst to life, further slowing the Ark’s descent. Three yellow parachutes deployed from the uppermost section of the Ark. Two of them inflated, the third flapped limply in the wind. The imbalance caused the ship to tilt. The Ark’s corrective thrusters attempted to compensate, streaking their blue flames brilliantly across the night sky as the Ark spiraled out of control. Crumbled ruins of an ancient city cast quick-moving shadows across a barren desert landscape as the tumbling ship passed overhead. The Ark crashed at the edge of a dry lake bed, buckled slightly in the middle, then toppled and skidded half a mile. When the smoke cleared and the dust settled, the damaged Ark lay on its side, half-buried in the valley-sized trench it had gouged. Stillness settled, as though the night were eager to claim it back after the Ark’s uninvited intrusion. Interrupting the silence yet again, the Ark ejected one of its stasis chambers with a loud pop. The metallic chamber landed a hundred feet away, then started venting white mist into the warm air. Doyle rode his bike through the University campus as often as he could–to and from the grocery store, trips to the public library, and as on this occasion, heading home from the communal office building where he sometimes worked for a change of scenery from his home office. It had been almost a decade since he was a student himself, but he still cherished the feeling of nostalgia that washed over him as he pedaled over the familiar paved path and relived some of his favorite memories. The bike path meandered past and around most of the buildings, and Doyle was rounding a blind corner when he nearly ran over a kneeling woman. She was trying desperately to stop a flock of fluttering papers from blowing away in the wind. Doyle squeezed his brakes and swerved to avoid her, rolling down a rocky embankment next to the path and winding up flat on his back. He stared up at the woman. She stared back down at him, forgetting briefly about her escaping papers. “Oh my God I’m so sorry!” cried the woman. “Are you alright?” Doyle got to his feet. He was out of breath, and guessed he’d have more than a few bruises in the morning, but nothing felt broken. He nodded to the woman and rolled his bike back up the embankment. After expressing her profound apologies, the woman introduced herself as Kirsten. Doyle helped her chase down the last of her errant papers. Kirsten explained that they were term papers she had finished grading that night. This doesn’t look like a term paper, Doyle thought as he studied one of the sheets in his hands. Blast radius diagrams, tonnage reports, target coordinates, fallout projections. It seemed so familiar, and yet out of place at the same time. He looked up at Kirsten, who was holding her hand out, eagerly awaiting the return of her document. Her expression had changed. Her eyes seemed hollow, her smile emotionless. Was this how it went? Doyle couldn’t remember. The edges of his vision were getting dim and closing in until Kirsten’s frightening, grinning face was all that remained at the center of a black void. Then even she faded away. The next sensation Doyle became aware of was the taste of dirt. He choked and spit, then rolled over onto his back. Light crept back into his vision in the form of a dim haze. “Kirsten? Where’s… Where’s my bike?” Doyle’s voice came out a raspy whisper that he almost didn’t recognize as his own. He sat up and tried to feel around for his bicycle. His arms seemed reluctant to respond, like rubber tubes flopping around in slow motion. His hand brushed against something. A foot, an ankle, connected to a leg. Was it his? Doyle didn’t think so. “Get your… hands off me you… you pervert.” Doyle recognized the woman’s stilted, protesting voice, but it wasn’t Kirsten’s. He wasn’t on campus anymore, that had been years ago. So where did he know that voice from? Where was he? How he had gotten there? And why did he feel such a foreboding sense of urgency? As his vision cleared, Doyle was able to discern that the sky was dark, but the stars seemed unusually bright. A flat, cracked dry lake bed stretched out into the darkness ahead. On the horizon Doyle could see the dark silhouette of what looked like a city skyline. Someone was laying prone on the ground to his left–the woman whose voice he had recognized but couldn’t place. Behind him, Doyle saw the stasis chamber–it looked like a large refrigerator with its door open. In the distance beyond was the upper edge of the Ark peeking above a steep dirt mound that extended half a mile out toward the edge of the dry lake. Doyle took in the sight, but his brain refused to process what he was seeing. “Are you dudes okay?” A man’s voice, this time. One that Doyle also recognized. It came from inside the refrigerator-thing. Doyle shook his head, trying desperately to surface and sort out his thoughts and memories. They came slowly, softened and warped like he was viewing them through a rippling pool of water. “I had to eject your stasis chamber. That gnarly crash landing totally wiped out some major power conduits and I couldn’t supply enough juice to keep that one running. I guess ‘cause there were two of you in there.” The inside of the stasis chamber was too dark for Doyle to make out any details. A thinning fog flowed out of it like spilled milk. “Heady?” Doyle asked. “Is that you?” “Nah, bruh. I’m not Heady. Or at least I don’t think I’m Heady.” Doyle stood up. His knees wobbled and he almost fell, but he managed to regain his balance. He took a few short steps toward the stasis chamber to get a better look inside. “What kind of stupid game are you playing, Heady? Come out of there. Do you know where we are? What’s going on?” “Nah bruh, the Ark’s sensors got pretty janked up when we landed. I can’t get a clean look around.” A memory bubbled up through the murk into Doyle’s consciousness. The Ark! That girl on the ground, she had been pointing a gun at Heady. The last thing Doyle remembered was running toward the Ark, charging at the girl, trying desperately to save Heady. And Kirsten. “Heady? Where are you?” Doyle said. He reached the stasis chamber and put his hand against it for balance. “Get out of there and come with me, Kirsten’s still on the Ark. We’ve got to find her.” “Heady? Heady is that really you?” Doyle spun around. The young woman–Susan? No Sarah–was sitting up now, rubbing her eyes. “I’m not Heady,” said Heady’s voice. “Heady was just a part of my training data. My name is Desmond.” “Quit messing around Heady,” said Doyle. He stuck his head in the stasis chamber and looked around at its padded walls. The small chamber was empty. “Desmond?” Sarah’s voice came, sharper than before. “What happened to the Ark?” Sarah looked around urgently, then stopped when her gaze fell on the dark skyscrapers blotting out the stars along the horizon. “How did we get back to Earth? Oh God… How long has it been?” “I don’t know, bruh.” Heady’s voice came from the empty chamber again. Doyle started walking around it, looking for where Heady was hiding. “My sensors are either busted or buried, but based on the star patterns I can see, I don’t think this is…” “Heady,” interrupted Doyle. “Where the hell are you? I can hear you but I can’t see?” “That’s not Heady, you dipshit,” said Sarah, still sitting on the ground but looking much more alert. “Desmond is the Ark’s computer. He must be communicating through the ejected stasis chamber.” Doyle stared at Sarah blankly. “Heady is talking to us through the computer?” Sarah shook her head. “No, that is the computer. It’s using Heady’s voice for some reason.” “I’m using the speech and vocal patterns that were provided to me in my training data,” said Desmond. “Your training…” said Sarah, trailing off. Her eyes widened. “Oh! You mean my data. My videos? Oh, shit…” Doyle turned and looked at the stasis chamber again. “Look, computer, or whatever you are, Kirsten is still on the Ark and I need to find her. Can you help me do…” Before he could finish, Doyle felt hands on his back forcefully shove him. His head hit the metal shell of the stasis chamber and he fell to his hands and knees. Doyle’s head throbbed and he scrambled around to see Sarah looming over him. “Asshole! This is your fault! How long has it been? He could be a hundred years old by now! He could be… He could be dead!” Sarah grunted with frustration, and started kicking dirt at Doyle. “Augh! Stop that!” cried Doyle, raising his arms defensively to protect his face. When the onslaught stopped, Doyle lowered his arms and looked at Sarah. She was pointing her concussion pistol at him. “Now, look!” said Doyle. “Let’s just talk about this like mature…” An explosive force of air cut Doyle off. The too-bright stars spun around in a dizzying cacophony of light before winking out. A brilliant halo of light encircled the full moon like a crystal ball suspended in the cloudless sky. A cool breeze rustled the leaves of the evergreens surrounding the small grassy field behind the university’s gymnasium where the faculty party had already wrapped up hours ago. “Ice crystals,” said Kirsten. “Hmm?” Doyle breathed. “The Moon halo,” replied Kirsten, pointing up at the sky. “It’s created by the Moon’s light refracting off ice crystals in the atmosphere.” Doyle turned his head to look at her. She was laying on her back next to him. An empty wine bottle obscured her face. Doyle reached over and tipped the bottle over. “Did we finish that whole thing?” asked Kirsten with a grin. “Afraid so,” said Doyle. He smiled at her, but she turned away. “I should go,” said Kirsten. “I don’t even know why I’m here.” Doyle looked back up at the brilliant ring of light in the sky and sighed. “Faculty party, remember?” “Yeah, smart ass,” said Kirsten. “I mean out here, drinking a whole bottle of wine hours after the party’s over.” “I figured you just liked the company,” said Doyle. He felt his heart beat a little quicker. “I mean, that’s why I stuck around.” “You’re sweet, Doyle,” said Kirsten. She still wasn’t looking at him, but Doyle thought it sounded like she was smiling now. “Maybe a little too sweet.” He didn’t know what that meant. Kirsten and Doyle had seen each other a handful of times since he almost ran her over a couple months ago, but not as much as Doyle had wanted. He had begun to assume his interest was one-sided and had made the decision to stop pursuing her when out of the blue she invited him to be her plus one at the party tonight. “So why are you here?” asked Doyle. Kirsten sighed. “I don’t want my time here to end,” she said. “I love teaching here. I love the work I get to do. I love helping the kids, getting to see them learn and grow. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted from life.” “Who said your time here has to end?” said Doyle. “From what I saw at the party, everyone loves you. I can’t imagine your job is in jeopardy.” “It’s not my job that’s in jeopardy,” replied Kirsten. She turned and looked at Doyle. He looked back. She had a serious expression on her face. “I’ve got a decision to make, Doyle. A big one. There’s a right answer and a wrong one, but if I pick the right one, nothing will ever be the same for me again. I’ll lose so much.” “And what if you pick the wrong one?” asked Doyle. “I don’t know if I could forgive myself for that,” said Kirsten. The two of them remained silent for a while, listening to the crickets and the rustling leaves. “When I was little,” said Doyle, “I became friends with a new kid at school. He was a little guy, and it wasn’t long before the popular kids singled him out. I knew it was happening, but for a long time I didn’t say anything. I knew if I told anyone , then those kids would just start bullying me instead. I let it go on for months, ignoring the cuts, bruises, and black eyes. I just watched it happen. Didn’t say a damn word. I was too scared of what it would mean for me to do anything else.” “What happened?” asked Kirsten. “They went too far,” said Doyle. “I’m not sure exactly what they did, but it was bad enough that his parents pulled him out of school. I don’t know what happened to him after that.” “That’s awful,” said Kirsten. “Yeah,” said Doyle. “I let fear dictate my actions. I let it lead me down the path I knew was wrong. And it brought me nothing but shame and regret. From that point on, whenever the choice is that clear, I don’t even hesitate. It’s not even worth thinking about.” Kirsten cleared her throat and stood up, brushed off her dress with her hands, then picked up the empty wine bottle and turned toward the gymnasium. “Thanks for being my plus one, Doyle,” said Kirsten. She started walking. “And thanks for the talk. You were right, I did quite enjoy the company.” “Any time,” said Doyle. “I suspect you’ve helped quite a lot more than you could possibly imagine,” said Kirsten. Doyle sat up and watched as she walked away. “Can I see you again?” he called after her. Kirsten paused for a moment. “Yeah,” she said, without looking back. “Yeah I think I’d like that.” Smiling, Doyle laid back down. The shimmering crystal ball surrounding the Moon flashed and intensified, like a brilliant explosion of light raining down from the sky. Doyle squinted as he emerged from the fog of unconsciousness. Blurry overlapping discs converged into pinpricks of starlight peppering the night sky. “Quizzot klax’zgath grizzum?” asked a strange high-pitched voice that Doyle didn’t recognize in a language that he was entirely unfamiliar with. “Um, what?” asked Doyle. He looked in the direction the voice had come from and saw a strange looking man with pale skin and shoulder-length white hair standing next to the stasis chamber. The pale man scratched his head, then repeated himself. “Quizzot klax’zgath grizzum? Kolaq’unth!“ he emphasized the last word. Doyle shook his head. Movement in the sky drew his gaze upward, and he saw what looked like a large flying green dumpster floating above the Ark’s trench. A dozen or so thick shiny cables hung down from the thing. The cables latched on to either side of the ark in pairs all along its length. “Uh, what’s that?” Doyle asked, and pointed. The man raised his arms and sighed in obvious exasperation, then vanished. Doyle blinked. There was the stasis chamber. There was the half-mile long wall of dirt obscuring most of the Ark. There was the flying green dumpster. But there was no more man where the man had been just a moment ago. Something on the flying green dumpster flashed, drawing Doyle’s attention. He felt a stinging sensation on his forehead and impulsively smacked at it. The man reappeared next to the stasis chamber. “Quagnazz!” shouted the man. “Kluzatt ha’gar when the translator cells start working.” “Hang on,” said Doyle. “I understood that last bit. What did you say?” “I said let me know when the translator cells start working,” said the man. There was a loud screeching noise, followed by a rumbling as the dirt walls of the enormous trench started to shake loose. The flying green dumpster had started pulling up, tightening the slack on the cables attached to the Ark. “What are you doing to the Ark?” Doyle asked, alarmed. “Impounding it,” said the man. “Your–what did you call it? Ark?–doesn’t seem to be registered with any prefectures. What planet are you from, exactly?” The Ark creaked in protest and started to move as the flying green dumpster continued to wrench it from the ground. “Uh, this one,” said Doyle. The flying green dumpster loosened its slack on the cables attached to the Ark slightly, then reared back in another attempt to dislodge the larger buried ship. “Also, can you please stop doing that?” The man stared at Doyle for a moment before bursting into laughter. “Nobody’s from this planet.” Doyle blinked. “What do you mean, nobody’s from Earth? Everybody’s from Earth. Why, where are you from?” A confused expression formed on the man’s face. “What are you some kind of religious freak?” The man scratched his head and looked Doyle up and down, as though actually seeing him for the first time. “At any rate, this ain’t Earth, buddy, but it is a protected historical preserve, and there are hefty fines for just disturbing rocks, let alone… Well… Let alone whatever the frazz you call what you did there.” The man waved his hand at the half-mile trench that the Ark gouged into the dry lake bed when it crashed. “Since that hunk of junk is unregistered, you’re going to have to come claim it in person. Just bring that claim ticket to the impound station at Takkah IV some time in the next ninety UDCs.” The man pointed to a small white slate with strange markings on it that was on the ground next to Doyle’s feet. Doyle picked it up. The creaking noises from the Ark intensified. The dirt walls of the trench that hugged the Ark finally gave way and, with a deafening crunch, the front half of the Ark came free from the ground. The ship bent in the center and there was an ear-shattering metallic crunch as it broke in half. The flying green dumpster continued to ascend and pulled the bottom of the Ark free from the ground as well. Dirt and chunks of debris spilled from the two halves of the Ark as they swung freely from the cables like two opposing pendulums of a mammoth grandfather clock. “Ah,” said the man. “At this point I am legally bound to inform you that the Takkah Towing Company is not responsible for any damage done to your ship during the course of its impounding.” “Uh, hang on,” said Doyle, staring dumbfounded at the two halves of the Ark as they receded out of view into the sky. It dawned on him what was happening. He was losing the Ark. He was losing Kirsten. “Hang on a sec! You can’t just take that! There’s people on there! We’ve got to wake them up! Get them out!” “Ooh,” said the man, then sucked air in through his teeth. “Probably shouldn’t have mentioned that. The impound fine for living cargo is triple. Well, you can work all that out when you come claim it.” The man turned and surveyed the scarred mess of dirt and debris that remained in place of the Ark. “Bring your credit chip,” said the man. “You’re gonna need it, buddy. Anyway, my ship’s almost out of projection range, so I’ll say goodbye now.” “You’re not going anywhere, dickweed!” came Sarah’s voice. She leaped out from behind the stasis chamber and aimed her concussion pistol at the man, who was now positioned directly between her and Doyle. The man turned to face her and started flickering. “That’s my Ark and those are my videos and you can’t have them!” Not again, thought Doyle as the concussive blast from Sarah’s weapon passed straight through the semi-translucent man and sent Doyle flying backwards. He was already unconscious before he hit the ground. A swirling white maelstrom of mist danced with the falling snow in front of his face as Doyle exhaled nervously. He pressed the doorbell, and waited. Kirsten opened the door and greeted him with a thin smile. “Hello Doyle, thanks for coming. Come in out of the cold,” she said. Doyle stomped the snow off his boots and wiped them on the mat outside her door. Welcome, it beamed up at him in pink cursive letters. “Let me take your coat,” said Kirsten as she closed the door behind him. Doyle unzipped and Kirsten got behind him to pull the heavy down jacket off his arms. He could feel the wetness in his armpits once the jacket came free and exposed them to the still-cool air that had invaded from outside. Kirsten hung the coat up in the closet by the door as he took his boots off. “Here, I brought this,” said Doyle, presenting the bottle of wine he had brought. Kirsten took the bottle and led Doyle down the hallway to her living room. Christmas decorations adorned the walls–wreaths, bows, and blinking red and green lights strung high up on hooks in the ceiling. The scent of nutmeg and cinnamon lingered in the air. “You really went all out with the decorating this year,” said Doyle as they stepped into the living room. “Kirsten’s the Christmas Queen!” Doyle saw who had spoken. Ted, one of Kirsten’s colleagues at the university, was sitting on Kirsten’s living room couch. Why the hell was Ted here? Doyle thought it would be just him and Kirsten. Could he still go through with his plan with Ted here? Doyle wasn’t sure. For months Ted had been intruding on Doyle’s life. Kirsten had cut dates short, or canceled all together due to mysterious phone calls and “urgent business” at the university. Doyle had spied the caller ID on her phone more than once, and it was always Ted. Kirsten had grown more distant–Doyle missed her laughter–and it got worse each time she received a call or canceled a date due to “urgent business” with Ted. And now, apparently, Ted had graduated from interrupting via phone and was showing up on Doyle’s dates with Kirsten in person. “Hi Ted,” said Doyle. “Hi Doyle, good to see you again,” said Ted. There was an awkward silence, then Doyle saw Kirsten make some kind of gesture out of the corner of his eye. “Ted was just leaving,” said Kirsten. “Ah, yes. Well, before I go… Doyle, there’s something Kirsten and I need to tell you,” said Ted, standing up from the couch. “No there isn’t!” Kirsten said forcefully. “Come on Ted, I’ll get your jacket.” Ted shook his head. “Kirsten, I need to be here when you tell him.” “Tell me what?” asked Doyle. “Excuse us a moment, Doyle,” said Kirsten. She grabbed Ted by the arm and led him to the kitchen. Months of secrets, phone calls, canceled dates, never telling Doyle what she was up to. Until now, Doyle had managed to shove his suspicions into the recesses, out of his conscious mind. He bottled up all of his skepticism, his intuition, his fear, and his rage. But now it was pouring over–his mind was reeling. All this time, was he just a fool? A sucker? No. Kirsten wasn’t that sort of person. She was kind. She would never treat anyone that way, let alone someone she purported to care about. Doyle breathed deeply, doing everything within his power to quell the mental volcano of emotion that was on the verge of eruption. Steeling his nerves, Doyle marched through the living room to the kitchen doorway. Kirsten and Ted were speaking in hushed tones on the far side of the island. They both looked up, startled to see Ted come in. “Kirsten, I…” said Doyle. The words caught in his throat. Ted and Kirsten stared at him, both expressionless. “Kirsten I love you,” said Doyle. He finally got it out, after all these years. Kirsten opened her mouth, but remained silent. “You’re the only thing I care about,” continued Doyle. “And when we’re not together, all I can do is think about the next time we will be. It’s like my whole life revolves around you. I know you have feelings for me too and… And I’m just… I need to… I came here to do this today, and I’m just going to do it.” Doyle took a step forward and reached into his pocket. He gripped the tiny jewelry box in his sweaty palm. Kirsten took a step backward. She bumped into Ted, whose eyes had opened almost comically wide. Ted reached up and touched Kirsten’s arms to steady her. After stepping around the island, Doyle got down on one knee. “Oh… Oh…” Kirsten managed to gasp. “Ted, I…” She started shaking her head. “Don’t answer right away,” said Doyle. “I just want you to know how strongly I feel, and to let you know that I’m ready. I’m ready for us to…” “Doyle, maybe this isn’t the best time to…” Ted started. Doyle glared at him with all the hatred he could muster. Ted’s mouth snapped shut and he took a step back, letting go of Kirsten’s arms. “Kirsten,” said Doyle. He closed the jewelry box and put it on the island. “You hang on to this. I did what I came here to do. I want you to think hard about what you want. Or who you want,” he glared at Ted. “It’s a big decision, I know. We can talk later. I love you.” Kirsten’s cheeks were wet with tears. Sweat poured down Doyle’s forehead and he could feel it dripping down his sides from his armpits as he turned and walked back into the living room. He walked down the hallway toward the front door. The blinking Christmas lights flashed bright red, and Doyle broke into a run. A klaxon started blaring. He looked up and saw Sarah’s back turned toward him in the distance, and the dark silhouette of the Ark looming above. Doyle continued to sprint toward her. She turned, and Doyle saw that it wasn’t Sarah, but Kirsten, her wet cheeks still glistening. She had something in her hand. She squeezed it. This isn’t how it happened, thought Doyle. There was a blinding flash of light from the Ark, and Doyle felt the flesh tear from his bones in the explosion. “I’m sorry for shooting you,” said Sarah. Doyle, sitting against the stasis chamber, grunted and rubbed the back of his head. “Not the first time,” Sarah clarified. She was sitting next to Doyle, also leaning against the stasis chamber. “I meant to do that one. I mean that last one. I was shooting at that guy who stole the Ark. I didn’t know he was just a hologram, or whatever.” “He said this isn’t Earth,” said Doyle. “If this isn’t Earth, where the fuck are we?” “I have good news and bad news, my dudes,” Heady’s voice came from inside the stasis chamber. Sarah and Doyle both looked up in surprise. “Desmond?” asked Sarah. “How are you still here? When the Ark was taken, I just assumed…” “I transferred a copy of myself to this stasis chamber when I realized what was happening,” said Desmond. “Which brings me to the good news–I know where we are. We made it to our destination! Before the Ark got out of range I was able to verify it against my star charts. Welcome to Kepler-1649c my dudes!” “But how is that possible?” Sarah asked. Doyle followed her gaze to the shadowy skyscrapers that lined the horizon. “The New Home was going to be a fresh start. A chance for humanity to do things over the right way. How could this be the New Home?” “Well, that’s where the bad news comes in,” said Desmond. “Based on the stellar drift, I know how long it’s been since we left Earth. And it’s a bit longer than the three hundred years the trip was supposed to take.” Doyle’s heart sank. Over three hundred years? That meant everything and everyone he ever knew back on Earth was dead. His parents were dead. Heady was dead. He looked at Sarah and guessed from her expression that she was processing the same information. “How long?” asked Doyle. “Two million, nine hundred and ninety six thousand, eight hundred years,” said Desmond. “Give or take a few hundred.” Doyle’s brain struggled to comprehend what he had just heard. It was a losing battle. “So, here’s the deal dudes,” continued Desmond. “My training data didn’t give me many relevant details I needed to navigate the Ark through three hundred light years of unknown perils in deep space. In fact it didn’t give me many relevant details to do anything at all. I knew my basic mission, but I’m not sure how six hundred hours of videos about pranking chumps and eating substances generally considered to be non-comestible were intended to help me.” “Ah, heh heh,” Sarah gave a nervous chuckle. Doyle shot her an angry glance. “So that’s why it took me a little longer to find my way here,” finished Desmond. “A little longer?” cried Doyle. “Three million years is a little longer than three hundred, you say?” “So I got a look at that city over there from the Ark’s sensors when it was being hauled away,” said Desmond. “It looks old, bruh. Like really old. Abandoned for at least tens of thousands of years, probably a lot longer. My best theory is that some time in the last few million years, the rest of Earth decided to up and colonize this planet without us. And they have since left. Judging from that dude who took the Ark, they probably spread to other planets. And since this was the only habitable one around this sun, it means they probably spread to other solar systems around here too.” Doyle shook his head. He remembered the documents he had seen at the Nicola’s Children compound before he ended up on the Ark. “I don’t think it could have been Earth,” he said. “The Ark was armed with nuclear warheads. Something called Project Deluge. After the Ark launched, it was supposed to… You were supposed to…” Sarah snapped her head at Doyle with a confused expression on her face. “Never happened, bruh,” said Desmond. “What?” asked Doyle. “I mean, the nukes were there, but I never launched them,” said Desmond. “There was nothing in my programming to do that.” “What the fuck are you guys talking about?” asked Sarah. Doyle ignored her. “So, the payloads? They’re still…” “Still on the Ark, bruh,” said Desmond. Sarah and Doyle sat in silence for a while. A light, warm breeze started blowing over the desert landscape, carrying with it a strange unidentifiable scent. Doyle looked toward the city on the horizon, where the breeze was coming from. Abandoned for tens of thousands of years, Desmond had said. Nicola’s Children thought they were pioneers–blazing a trail to a new life on a new world. But they ended up relics. Left behind and forgotten for so long that the planet they planned to colonize had already been used up and discarded by the very people they were supposed to have left behind. “So what are we gonna do now?” asked Sarah. Doyle reached over and retrieved the small white slate from the dirt where he had dropped it when Sarah shot him the second time. “We’re going to get the Ark back,” he said. “How are we gonna do that?” said Sarah. Doyle turned the slate over in his hands and studied the strange alien hieroglyphs that marked its surface. He leaned his head back on the stasis chamber and looked up at the alien sky with its alien stars, felt the warm alien breeze on his skin, and inhaled the strange alien scent. He thought about Kirsten–the one thing from his previous life he could be sure still existed in this otherwise entirely alien place and time. Doyle sighed. “Fuck if I know.”

Thanks for sponsoring the show at https://www,pateon.com/republickeeper 120 – Welcome to the R K P Show opener Give the phone # 866-988-8311 info@republickeeper.com Feds starting to charge with crimes where locals won’t. Left complaining of “chilling effect” – correct. Soros Fox Gingrich Clip Fox Response Calls for drastic criminal justice and police reforms have swept the country since the death of George Floyd, but local prosecutors already are making waves on that front -- in a sign that under-the-radar political investments made by progressive groups in recent years are paying off. District attorneys and current candidates whose campaigns benefited from the work of left-wing organizations – including ones backed by liberal billionaire George Soros – are now pushing for new practices that could see sharp reductions in prosecutions and incarcerations. Soros, through the Justice & Public Safety PAC and other groups, has been spending millions of dollars on prosecutorial races in recent years, with a number of beneficiaries making headlines since their elections. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, who was boosted by Soros in her campaign, drew controversy when she announced her office was bringing felony charges against Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the couple who brandished guns outside their home as protesters marched by in June. The McCloskeys have said many times they were defending themselves, with tensions high in St. Louis and other cities over race and law enforcement. They said the crowd of demonstrators broke an iron gate marked with "No Trespassing" and "Private Street" signs, and that some threatened them. Another high-profile prosecutor who has been backed by Soros in the past is Cook County, Ill. State's Attorney Kim Foxx. Foxx drew national attention when she dismissed the case against actor Jussie Smollett, who had been accused of faking a hate crime attack against himself. The case was later taken over by a special prosecutor who filed new charges. Foxx is seeking reelection this year and already won her Democratic primary. Regarding ongoing protests in her jurisdiction, she has said that her office will lean toward dismissing cases coming from protests or curfew violations (Mayor Lori Lightfoot imposed a curfew between May 30 and June 6 after a George Floyd protest). “The question it comes down to is, is it a good use of our time and resources?” Foxx told the Chicago Sun-Times. “No, it’s not.” Looking at her term in office, a report from the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund found a 13 percent decline in guilty pleas or verdicts in felony cases and a 39 percent increase in dropped or lost cases after Foxx took office in 2016. San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, another beneficiary of Soros-tied contributions, recently defended the movement to defund police. In a discussion with Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., earlier in July, Boudin questioned whether money going to police was “the most effective” use of taxpayer dollars. Boudin is also one of a number of district attorneys participating in "Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commissions," teaming with the Grassroots Law Project, an organization co-founded by activist Shaun King that calls for defunding police. The other district attorneys who are participating in these commissions are Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner and Suffolk County, Mass., DA Rachael Rollins, who have both benefited from Soros’ support. Krasner, who was elected after Soros put $1.45 million into a political action committee that supported him, has also taken a public stance regarding events that have spun out of the protests over Floyd’s death, particularly the federal response to violent demonstrations in cities like Portland. In a Washington Post op-ed he co-wrote with Baltimore DA Marilyn Mosby, Krasner threatened to have federal officers arrested and charged if they overstep their authority in his jurisdiction, after officers in Portland were accused of using excessive force. “Should Trump send federal agents who engage in the same illegal vigilante activities, unlawfully assaulting and kidnapping people, they will face criminal charges from our offices,” Krasner and Mosby said. In Contra Costa County, Calif., District Attorney Diana Becton – also backed by Soros – changed how her office handles police shooting cases, removing deputy district attorney Barry Grove from his role as the main prosecutor in such cases, switching to a team approach, according to the Mercury News. Becton also announced earlier this month that she was filing hate crime charges against Nichole Anderson and David Nelson, White people who were allegedly caught painting over a Black Lives Matter mural. Orlando State Attorney candidate Monique Worrell is also backed by a group linked to Soros in her quest to fill the seat that will be vacated by Aramis Ayala, who was also supported by Soros. Worrell’s platform calls for an end to cash bail, which would result in more defendants being released before their trial. She also says that incarceration should be a “last resort,” and that those who do not pose “a threat to the physical safety of others” should not be placed behind bars. Worrell’s opponent Ryan Williams has cited the Soros connection as a point of attack, and Worrell has accused Williams of playing on anti-Semitic tropes by mentioning Soros’ involvement. But the Jewish political philanthropist is not the only player in the game of prosecutorial campaigns. Real Justice PAC, also co-founded by Shaun King, has supported 29 head prosecutors and state attorneys general since 2018, including several who were also backed by Soros, such as Gardner, Boudin, Rollins and Becton. The organization is also backing the 2020 campaigns of Foxx and 13 other candidates seeking office. The organization's goals include electing – and recruiting – candidates who would make changes to criminal justice systems such as ending cash bail and “rolling back practices that lead to mass incarceration.” One 2020 candidate Real Justice succeeded in getting elected already is Multnomah County, Ore., District Attorney Mike Schmidt, who will be in a key position when he takes office on Aug. 1, given that his jurisdiction includes Portland, where riots have been taking place amid months of protests following Floyd’s death. Schmidt has said that he would potentially drop charges against nonviolent protesters when he is in office, according to local NBC affiliate KGW Delia Garza, who won the Democratic primary in Travis County, Texas, and will run unopposed in November, is also backed by Real Justice. Garza has already said that her office will decline to prosecute certain types of cases. “We’re not going to prosecute low-level drug offenses. We’re not going to prosecute crimes that are an extension of someone being in poverty, basically,” Garza said, according to KXAN. “You know, we’re going to look at the way that we prosecute crimes like prostitution, because so many times those things, those kinds of crimes are related to poverty in some kind of way.” Trasnscript: 124 - Fox Silences Gingrich - Is George Soros behind lax prosecutions? 00:00:05 - 00:05:03 A. Republican podcast. Brian O'Kelly I will be your host for today's adventure. Broadcasting from the forest in cottage link Washington just outside of Seattle on my Russian maidens octave. Microphone this is podcast number one. Hit me up on twitter parlor. facebook whatever your voice is club. It's ask Brian. Your Bro in all of those cases. And so and the Republicans Dot Com website, which is a work in progress and should be. Vastly improved by Monday. Let's begin this program like every other by thanking God for good health and the ability to here sharing with you. Happy. Friday. If you're listening on the livestream on facebook on twitter on. Youtube and now on daily motion also. Thank you for your time and attention I'm grateful for it and hope everybody's off to a good start. for the day and Let's see. We've got a whole bunch of stuff going on and Yesterday I played a clip of. Speaker Gingrich was on the. Show outnumbered there with Harris Faulkner and Melissa Francis and what the Speaker had to say was that he thought that the big problem was that these. Attorneys district attorneys are not taking care of business and prosecuting people. and. The hosts seemed a little bit put off by that. And They There was fourteen seconds of dead air. As a result and Harris Wagner has come back and responded to that but I'm decided that I wanted to see keep hearing about George Soros, and I don't really know about George Soros other than the rumors and so on a here and I decided that wasn't good enough and I wanted to learn a little bit more for myself and so and for you I figured if I don't know you probably don't so we can learn together. So first let's go and set up in case you have missed this out there this is what I'm referencing that happened with. Speaker Gingrich on the show outnumbered on Fox I guess this would have been on Tuesday. Hero whose lives have been destroyed by this violence. They represent every. Speaker Gingrich have a final thought for us. Look, the number one problem in almost all these cities is George Soros elected left wing anti police, pro criminal district attorneys who refuse to keep people locked up. Just yesterday they put somebody back on the street who's wanted for two different murders in New York City. You cannot solve this problem and both powers and by. Have talked very. About what they call progressive the district. Attorney's progressive. District attorneys are anti police pro criminal in overwhelmingly elected with George sources, money, and their major cause of the violence we're seeing who's they keep putting violent criminals back on the street. I'm not sure we need to bring George listen to this. I was going to get the last word Paker. He he paid for it. So here's the. Teen seconds. I agree it. Doesn't need to be a part of this conversation. One two, three, four, five, though it's six seven. Eight. Nine, ten eleven twelve. Ten, move on fourteen. Courtesy House. We have our network team. Gist an absolute eternity for that much debt air to happen and so. I don't know if somebody was speaking in Harris faulkners ear or what was going on while that was happening but she came out and said something about it. Afterwards. Here is what Harris Faulkner had to say. So we had a little incident on the show yesterday that was not smooth, and while I was leading that segment, we had interruptions and I sat silently while all of that played out. Also not ideal our guest former. House Speaker Newt Gingrich who was beloved and needed to be allowed to speak with the openness and respect that the show is all about. was interrupted. Do we debate with fire here? Yes but we must also give each other space to express ourselves. As the only original member of the six year old amazing daytime ride known outnumbered I. 00:05:03 - 00:10:00 Especially want to rock and roll with every voice in perspective at the table we don't censor on the show. And that's why we're winning weekdays at noon. I found that answer to be somewhat unsatisfactory candidly. I don't think that was For me that's not enough and you know there was an interruption and now I think the interruption was that you talked about George Soros and or that Nigga. Mr. Newt talked about George Soros and does appear that that is a sin that is not allowed on Fox News and I had absolutely no more no idea. It's the title on the on the livestream Thursday. I keep forgetting to update it before I start to livestream of all the things I'm doing but I'll get I'll get that down I need to just probably change it to live broadcast and it's always right. So sorry about that and probably need to. How to do that? During one of these video clips update are regardless. Glenn Beck used to be a Fox News host and Glenn Beck. was run out of the network and Glenn Beck says it was because he was talking about George Soros I will tell you that George Soros is not to be discussed. It is verboten You know when I got down to the end one of the things at Fox News they were starting to tell me I can't talk about things. They just talk about this stop talking about that one of them was God. One of them was Israel and the other one was George Soros and if you remember Glen You won't play the game. The problem with you is you won't play the game. If you've ever heard me tell that story that conversation started with George Soros. So the problem with us, you won't play the game and what that means that you won't shut up about the things that we don't want to talk about. and. So. All right. Well, that's weird. So this is supposed to be the right wing network. We're not hearing criticism, George Soros on the left wing networks and now when he's criticized on Fox, they shut down. Speaker. Gingrich Glenn Beck says that that's why he's not on the network anymore. So okay. What do we make of that? Well? Let's learn about George Soros. So this is George Soros mostly in his own words and in his son words son's words. This is video from. The Open Society Foundation website. And standing over society is one thing trying to. Plead open societies for strengthening opus had his is something else they have to evolve they have to create themselves. And that process is never ending process people are free and they want to hide behind. Orders. Use oversight and it sounded ways in order to have an open society you have to mediate the tension between equality and liberty popular sovereignty and individual freedom is a difficult task. The foundation does more than fun projects with. Certain things. One has to fight for even who is not properly if you believe in something. And you have the convictions. Towards it. You can really withstand. Surmountable odds I. Really. Fight fight. Society is always in danger. and. Renew itself being tested. And surviving. and. So that's that's George Soros and his son there, and you know it all sounds good open society and but you heard the one guy in there say that people are fearful. So they want to hide behind borders. So when they say open what they mean and it sounds you know better than it is what they mean is societies without rules. That's what they mean by open. They. Mean you're open to do whatever you want. Without restriction. That's what it means, and that's a very different thing from what it sounds like when you say open society, it sounds. Better than it is. So Mr Newt makes this claim that George A source has paid for it. So that well, let's find out. If George Soros WHO's paid for it So. Let me just share with you some reporting from Fox, news of all places that shut down the conversation, and I'm not gonNA share the video from them as much as a some. Text and then we'll share some. 00:10:01 - 00:15:02 Audio for some candid say funded. But so here's what what they report. district attorney's and current candidates. Campaigns benefited from the work of left-wing organizations including ones backed by liberal billionaire. George Soros are pushing for new practices that could see productions in prosecutions and. incarcerations. Soros through the Justice and public safety pack and other groups has been spending millions of dollars on prosecutorial races in recent years. A number of beneficiaries making headlines since their election all right now yes remember the mccloskey's. Those are the people in Saint Louis who ended up. With the guns out on their driveway as the protesters were coming by spoke at the RNC convention and They are being prosecuted, right? and. Of course, they're being prosecuted by prosecutors not prosecuting the protesters and vandals. So, who is this prosecutor? While her name is Kim Gardner and she was elected and paid for by this justice in public safety pack that is funded by George. Soros. So here is Kim, Gardner is the bully. Pulpit this is the threats that we receive. We're doing our job to be true ministers of justice. So no policeman is GonNa tell you or any other unit will come to you and tell you if you hold us accountable, we're going to start working. We're not gonNA police your community to make you the calls or say you're the cause of violent crime in your communities and right now we're in A. Very, unique time that we have policing unions with I call him forty-five to promote divisiveness in rhetoric of this anti law enforcement where it's perpetuating a fear that is causing problems with prosecutors like our sales to promote justice and when you have people who will threaten your livelihood not just whether you do your job we'll tell you we will make it difficult for you to do your job in every way. And they have the platform to co have the media. report. It. Yeah so There she is. She's You know complaining that. The police union is telling is protecting the police and that they're protecting the police from her the prosecutor. and. So it's it's amazing that these guys don't seem to be in favor of law and order now. Remember the Jussie smollet case. This was the case where the guy shows up in In Chicago. There and he's an actor right is on the whatever the show was I don't remember the name of the show that the guy was on. But The show he was on. I. Guess. It was empire was the name of the show. Anyway he was not an important player on that show in any serious way and but he went and. Got Himself fake attacked I, guess it was a hoax right and the prosecutor who wouldn't prosecute him was. This Kim Fox in Chicago, and so here is some Kim Vox. CanNot conflate peaceful protesters with what we saw last night. Last night was not an extension of a peaceful protests. Last night was not an extension of righteous anger. Last. Night was a blatant spray display. Of Criminal Behavior. What drove that behavior how we got there? Are Questions that we can continue to answer. But it is not the people for whom we've chosen not to use our resources to prosecute. The mothers who are mourning the loss is of their children the people who are afraid to go out into the stores into the streets, the people who are unable to come downtown today to go to work. Are Looking for answers. Not. Blame. Yeah looking for answers not blaming. So what she's saying is I don't want to prosecute anybody. I want answers to racial justice I. Don't want answers to the crime. Of course, this has led to. More and more crime because the criminals are just getting released. What's cheese Chicago Chevy violence now being experienced in several major cities including Chicago I'll research from a pro-police group is blaming local prosecutors and what they say is a declining conviction rate wgn investigates has an exclusive first look. At. This is Chicago. Every weekend teen killed in one every weekend painful holiday weekend. 00:15:02 - 00:20:04 There's no consequences. To legal gun possession. In our criminal justice system Chicago's new, and that's it right there. That's the new police chief. And he says there's no consequences to credit to gun possession in Chicago. There's no consequences to a lot of things in Chicago. There's no consequences to drug dealing. There's no consequences to all kinds of things in Chicago and so Kim Fox the prosecutor there again elected with George Soros money funded by put forward by everything about her was funded by George Soros and so now the police union is asking for her to resign. Public Room, Euch several police leaders in. Cook. County announced they have no confidence in Cook County State's attorney Kim Fox and they want her to resign. So the move follows the dismissal of charges in the Jussie smollet case however, at least one south suburban police chief disagrees with the move and this opposition goes beyond just the small case eyewitness news reporters here Sheltie is live right now with more on this call to resign today Sarah. Judy and rob the fraternal order of police and cook. County suburban police chief say that their frustration with Kim Fox started way before the Jussie smollet case, they accuse the state's attorney's Office of under prosecuting cases even not prosecuting cases even felony cases. We cannot stand for this any longer. Ms Facts needs to resign. And she should do it quickly. And so the cops are calling for her to resign and everybody wants to know what's going on in Chicago. WHY DO PEOPLE GETTING MURDERED IN CHICAGO? Well, apparently, there's no consequences for gun possession in Chicago and You know it is what it is. You can't change. What you can't change their the Nice woman who is the prosecutor isn't prosecuting the crimes. and. So I just got a message that the audio is a little buggy on guess that's up to the stream sometimes it's. You know it's interesting. I. The other day it was. Terrible on. On periscope and good on facebook and I guess today maybe a facebook as the one having trouble or maybe. All of them are regardless. The the idea here is we do the show live and it is what it is and we'll. All put it out on the podcast. Later, it'll be smooth as butter being recorded here in the idea was since I'm recording it anyway, we'll do it live and see how it works So Kim Fox they're calling for horror Resignation there in Chicago and so this is a good time for me to take a break and I will do that and see if I can't beef up the smoothness of the extreme as well at the same time. So be right back in just a minute or two and. You know how that works. So this is Brian I'll tell you the Republican podcast and I will be. Right, back Welcome back through public podcast and During the break I hopefully was able to clean up the livestream a little bit and. Hopefully, it's it's going to run a little bit better now for the program. Thank you for your patience. I think it was pilot error I want to blame the. Gerbils in the sky that make the Internet work but I think it was me. Song you know it is what it is. You know. Leaving the real world take responsibility, right you're grown up. So any welcome back to the Republican broadcasts with those who are new to the program So maybe I met the Lauren Culpa van last night handing out some business cards. Welcome. Thanks for joining us taking calls after the next break probably the eight six six. Nine eight eight eighty three eleven is the phone number if you WANNA call in be happy to have you and the Lauren culp rally last night was pretty cool deal and natural talk about that. Much on the show being were nationally focused show and that's a local election but that's the guy running for governor here in the state of Washington and pretty cool. So Now. Kim Fox there the prosecutor in Chicago basically decided that they don't want to use their Their public resources for prosecutions they don't think that's a good use of the resources that they think. It's a lot better to use them for I. Don't know whatever the famous thing was midnight basketball right now. In San Francisco. There was a guy supported again by George Soros. His name is Chesa Bodine. And chesser Benin is. The son? Of two of the weather underground bombers who are while his father is in federal prison. 00:20:04 - 00:25:01 His mother was in federal prison for years, and so this guy grew up with the idea that all jail is bad. And all incarceration is bad because his dad who was a criminal was incarcerated and so Chessel Benin is now the George. Soros Elected operated whatever guy? WHO's The San? Francisco. District Attorney Tonight San Francisco has a new district attorney chase a boo dean cave excise. Your Vasquez spoke to the new trump prosecutor about how he plans to take charge. The district attorney chase a bodine swore in the evening with the promise to reform San Francisco's justice system as I serve as district attorney district attorney, but the city and county of San Francisco or the city and county of San Francisco. Dean a former assistant public defender is now the top prosecutor. He says, there are too many people in jail over incarceration. He calls it and he says, one of his reforms will be decarbonisation. Join me join this movement join US rejecting the notion that to be free we must cage others. To do three months you other services. Quality of life issues such as carbon worries end open air drug abuse. I asked the incoming da whether justice system reforms could invite criminals who are not worried about legal consequence. Crimes these street level crimes like burglaries under your administration will they be prosecuted vigorously or will they feel emboldened as people are worried about I think we're going to have some very effective strategies to deter people from committing those crimes in San Francisco I, hope they don't commit them anywhere, but if they do not going to be in San Francisco on my watch I also asked Budeina about police shootings. Will he prosecute officers? I certainly hope not I don't look forward to filing criminal charges against anyone no matter who they are no matter what they do. It's difficult decision you. have to make just, knock. involving. and. Potentially in some cases, involving polices well, Houdini says its priorities will be bail reform sentencing reform and increased collaboration with public defenders. He says, he will soon be announcing strategies to deal with sexual assault as well as auto burglaries in San, Francisco Joe Vazquez KP and so you get to hear now. What the real motivation for Chesa Boudin is and he reveals it. This is actually a campaign commercial but you can hear in here when he talks about Carson. This is why this isn't based on kind of logic or common sense or experience or than anyone has seen this work anywhere. This is purely philosophical. Mass incarceration. It's a term that we hear almost daily. and. Yet what does it mean? To me, it meant going through prison gates. Every single time I wanted to see my parents. Since I was in diapers. To me it still means that as an adult. Because my father is serving a life sentence for crimes he committed when I was in diapers, my mother served twenty two years in prison. That's a reality that will never be lost on me. The implication is that somehow it's wrong for his father to be serving a life sentence for blowing people up. That's what his dad did. He was a weather underground terrorist. and His mom helped. and. They were will along with Bill Ayers Barack. Obama's buddy. They're in prison for billers isn't. A biller and his wife I believe in Nadine Dorn I think was And I don't know if Bill Ayers was ever prosecuted or not I regardless he continues. The reality though is not unique to me. It's not unique to the people I've represented or their families in my years. As a San, Francisco deputy public defender, it's an experience shared by the majority of Americans. The majority of Americans have an immediate family member who resided currently or formerly incarcerated is a defining feature of modern American culture. We need to end it now and we should start in San Francisco. That's And that's so that was his one of his campaign commercials is part about was what that was from and so. This Guy Chess Medine says that you know yes. Most people have a family member who has done jail time. I do. I do I have a family member? Who's done jail time? And you know it's not. 00:25:01 - 00:30:02 It's one of those that just is what it is right now I. I will tell you that this particular family member. Would tell you that He deserved the jail time. Okay, he would tell you that that the jail time was for crimes he committed. That, he wasn't a victim of the system when he went to jail, he was a victim miser. Of other people. And so I don't know what the problem is. Now, Philadelphia has a district attorney on named Larry Crasner. who an another one Name Rachel Rollins who's in a Massachusetts but. There is the one in Philadelphia and these guys are both funded by George Soros funded their campaigns and so here is Larry crafter. Welcome. I am Larry Crasner Philadelphia's district attorney. The most incarcerated country in the world is the United States Pennsylvania and Philadelphia has a terrible history of mass incarceration and excessive parole and probation. It's worse than many other parts of the United States. Incarceration tears apart society and it doesn't make us safe. It makes us broke. It takes resources from the things that prevent crime and make society whole like good public education, economic development health care, and treatment for children and families, and it shifts those resources to custody and supervision that costs a lot often more than fifty thousand dollars per person per year. Excessive. Parole and probation present. The same problem as excessive incarceration science shows that when parole and probation go on for too long they actually caused crime. While your taxes, just keep going up to pay that. Bill. Let's talk about how since the office in January two, thousand, eighteen, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office has worked to reduce excessive jail and supervision. So we can shift those resources to achieve effective crime prevention just society. I heard, he says, they're excessive jail. And Supervision. We, we don't want to lock people up and then make sure that they you know and look after them there and we don't want to let them out and look after them. We don't want to look after him at all. We just WANNA have give him a little class and tell them you know Johnny, you have to stop being really bad now. And if you don't stop being really bad, you're GONNA have to come back and take to their class. I don't understand the idea that that we are incarcerating too many people and they start letting these people out and the city's turn to garbage, and this is the. Source Philosophy. Here's one more Larry Krassner. The stark difference between what's coming out of the president's mouth and what's happening on the streets in Philadelphia. We have not had anything that could be described as A. Burglaries criminal trespasses what some people would call looting. We haven't had anything like that. For weeks we have had. Peaceful protests on one hundred percent peaceful protests here for weeks. So when he's talking about taking over cities and he's talking about cities being out of control, he is lying. About the city Philadelphia which is nothing new. We have no regard for the truth. He has no regard for facts. If they all of the law then we'll all get along famously and if they choose not to follow the law, then they will discover that there are laws in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that can be used to prosecute them. So he's talking about cutting the federal government? But based on what I saw in. Portland is my opinion that some of that behavior looks. Like. Criminal Conduct. He's just wrong. Federal law enforcement officers are not above state law and they're not a federal I even though our president would like to present he's above the law none of them are above the law. That we have seen in Portland might provide a clue as to what could be coming. You know when you cause serious bodily injury fraction or fracturing someone's skull. And if that is done in a What in my opinion? is a manner that does not legally justified charged with aggravated Assault First Degree felony. You could be potentially charged with aggravated Assault second-degree felony. You might be charged with attempted murder depending upon all of the circumstances that apply. I'm just I'm just stating something pretty basic, which is when you wear a uniform you're supposed to come correct that made you follow the constitution you follow the laws. And we'RE NOT GONNA put up with. American. Law Enforcement Federal agencies behaving like they're Putin's private police. That's not. See now this is so silly. 00:30:03 - 00:35:08 They're like they're behaving like they're Putin's private police. It's just ridiculous. You. Know to to say that the as though Somehow Vladimir Putin is calling donald trump saying, hey, why don't you get a some guys out there on the street in Portland because they're burning down the courthouse and over here in Russia we think that's really bad. Or is it that if you were patriotic You would let them burn down the courthouse is that what he's saying that that would be the right thing to do. The, you know. Ted. Wheeler wasn't protecting it Governor Brown? Wasn't protecting you. So president trump went in and protected at since it's federal property. Not let him continue happening here. You know these are just words. It's typical is typical trump just words he said this is going to take over us any and then that takeover. Looks like what one hundred fifty guys showing up in military gear alarm quite clear with the streets are I mean is that really what we're talking about so allows really just fluffing nonsense I don't think we should. I actually don't think we should worry too much about it other than to worry about the the possibility that this is playing into some you know typical game of divide and conquer that I think will not serve him. So. Divide and conquer is exactly what the whole Soros Open Society thing is about they want to divide the people who have an by open society. What they mean let me translate is one world government. Okay and so. They WANNA have a one world government, and what that means is that you eliminate borders, you'll eight national distinctions at every level. Okay and so when he's talking about the idea of not serving his interest, that's because he thinks that nationalism is bad. And that if you're interested in nationalism that somehow you are a problematic. Person So. That is the kind of content had related to this stuff. I've got a few other things queued up or teed up. So let's immigration grab a break real quick, and when we get back from the break over the break, if you want to call in make some calls. That's great. If not, we can talk about what I saw in her last night at the Lauren culp rally and so on and so forth. So the phone number is eight, six, six, nine, hundred, eighty, three eleven. If you WANNA call in that great. The facebook Messenger Youtube twitter messing here, kind of things are open to so I will be back. Shortly and Occidental. Republican podcast. Money Brian O'Kelly. I will be your Ford the balance of program I guess all the all the time on. Picking up the people depend on it and I need a guest host. People do as they do the best of shows right and. When the thing gets big enough nobody wants best of and then people want to sit in for him. So I guess at something maybe someday. So. Not Talk to the a little bit about why or last night with. Rally and and just what I saw there along with. Things. Nobody. Called in over the break. So and I can't actually take a phone call while I'm doing this because Well, you know you might be nuts and I don't have a call screener. So probably grab another break before it's done and. Go from there anyway So last night I went out to the Rally for the guy who wants to be the governor in the state of Washington, and for those who don't know around the country, this guy came to prominence. About, two years ago we passed a law in Washington state that was a gun lawn I don't WanNa. Get in the weeds on what this law was but long story short it was a restrictive law that the gun control lobby loved and the gun rights lobby didn't love and it's Not yet been determined to be unconstitutional but I don't know if that's been challenged regardless Lauren culp was the share of over way over on the east side of the state for those of you who don't know Washington state. Most of the population is on the west coast. The eastern part of the state is mostly agricultural and when you get way east or by the Idaho border, it is very, very little populated and Oak Dogan County over there is where Lauren. Call was the sure of. Or is the sheriff still I believe and He said when this law passed I'm not GonNa enforce it in my county. It's on constitutional I'm not doing it. You can't make me I took an oath to preserve and protect the constitution, and you are asking me to act outside of it and I won't do it. And so that's how Lauren culprits to prominence, and then this year we had this This primary election process and normally. 00:35:08 - 00:40:06 In the primary election, it's a top to kind of a primary thing and. But because the COVID, we had thirty, seven, thirty, eight candidates I think for governor on the GOP ticket and Lauren Culpa rose the top and beat them all and so I've seen him now in person twice and man this guy gets the constitution. He said any bill that comes across my desk. The first question I'm going to ask is it constitutional because? I don't care how much I like it or don't like it. If it's not constitutional, we can't do it and it's not gonNA hold up in the end anyway and What I've seen at these rallies now, a couple times is first of all. There's just a ton of people. There's a lot of energy on the right in this very, very blue state. There's a lot of red energy, which is the first time I've seen it really even when trump ran. Came and did a rally. There are a lot of people went to that trump rally but there was not enthusiasm for anybody on the gubernatorial side. Like this, this is very, very different than what we've seen here. Now, the the second the I noticed is that there were just a ton of people I mean literally like get a ton. Of People. Open carrying. Just, a lot of guys walk around with their hips and I'm not here to say that's good or bad, but I'll tell you what? If you're the person who wanted to come in and shoot that place. You weren't going to get a chance you're GONNA get one or two shots Hav, and you're going to be all done. There was just I mean first of all is a lot of law enforcement because Lauren call a police officer, right. But then also just people were comfortable open carrying in that environment. Another thing. I. Saw that was interesting is just a ton of not had masks on I couldn't say nobody but. Very few people have masks on I did see one Cunanan on great awakening shirt just one shirt like that, and so that was. Interesting. Now, the thing that I can share and is kind of an. I don't know how to say it's not really off the record. It's not a super big secret but. Let's just say that that our military has some unbelievable crowd control. Abilities okay these. Are Bases in the Middle East are. Very often surrounded by hostile crowds and that's just nothing new. It's been going for a long time. And not just in the middle. East. But other places to what America does unpopular things are basis get kind of surrounded by folks and. So we have some really effective crowd control. Methods and technology that we employ and when these things were happening in Seattle and I know some of these things have been happening in Portland. It's it's absolutely the One. Prosecutor there crowder from Philadelphia and the guys can't tell the difference between the street and the federal property. He's right on the street. The military can't operate posse. COMITATUS. Prevents that. But there's nothing that says that they can't give logistical support the people who are operating on the street. And this is really important. You know the the the COPs can't the military can't arrest you. But nothing says that the military camp provide intelligence or surveillance? Capabilities to the police that they arrest you with. As long as we're not violating the constitution. So those surveillance things would have a warrant and so on. But outdoor surveillance surveillance crowd doesn't require warrants, right. So the ability of pick out one voice from the crowd and identify who it is and identify one actor and some of those kind of things that the military has for capabilities but just say this. I, know I know now I had suspected but I now know that those capabilities have been brought to bear in some of these situations. What that means is there are a couple of big shifts here. That are very important and one is that the local police are not just on their own anymore. They are effectively every police agency that wants to. Has All of the women or all of the technology and support of the US military available them all they have to ask the president is making it available to them. So. PORTLAND. House a prosecutor Mike Schmidt. Came in down there and he was the George Soros back candidate, and so the police have come in there and. 00:40:06 - 00:45:14 The state police were coming in there and arresting people and they weren't getting prosecuted because of Mike Schmidt and so the state police pulled out of Portland. and. Said we'RE NOT GONNA. Waste our resources here if these guys aren't GonNa Bother, going to bother to prosecute them. Well the federal government said we will. They raise their hand will will prosecute them. We'll go ahead. We'll put them in jail. And so they're not getting charged with these local ordinances they're getting charged with federal crimes, and so the difference here is if they had been charged by Mike, Schmidt who wanted to keep them out of jail. do you want to go to jail? They would have been subject to a one year or two year local state of Oregon incarceration. But because Mike Schmidt decided not to prosecute. They're going to be prosecuted under federal law. which is going to put them in jail for somewhere between ten and forty years. And as this has ramped up, the complaints on the part of the left has been while you're trying to intimidate. People. Yes. That's the idea they're trying to intimidate people into not protesting or at least not into not protesting into not being violent when they do. So shifting gears, we'll come back I'm gonNA, take a break real quick actually I want shifting years old just said over to. The next thing John MacArthur is the pastor in Los Angeles of Grace Community Church and he has been fighting this ongoing battle with the county about opening up and having church services so they brought him into. The church and he brought people into the church, he said welcome to our protest. and. Then, the city got mad about that and has a snapped the lease on their parking lot and John. Macarthur now says, your have put me in jail and they're threatening that and he says, bring it on the angles been telling you for months. Blue states are using Cohen restrictions as a cover to launch an all out assault on your inalienable rights like you're right to religious liberty. Now. The tyrants in California are still pretty giving people for worshiping indoors all by executive. Fiat. But one pastor, he's fighting back to find a court order against enor- services and that man is pastor John Macarthur, and this is from the sermon. He gave to a packed hall of worshippers last Sunday. A. Pastor John. Macarthur of Grace Community Church joins me now macarthur why is this important for you to stand up to these owners edicts? Well. We believe that the Governor County, the city in the health department or going against the Constitution and just to remove one obvious question rate of Kobe in California is one one hundredth of one percent. So one one, hundred of one percent of forty million people have covid an ad eliminates freedom to worship from the entire state, the other ninety, nine point, nine percent right? The constitution supports s him by the way I am so thankful that president trump as told me personally that he supports church as essential and the churches need to stay open. So the Constitution on our side and the president's backing we're open. Pastor MacArthur Kamala Harris thanks we're in essentially rolled war to listen. This is not about punishment. It's about big brother is simply about saying a leader. What a leader says in times of crisis, and this is you can look at World War Two you look at the Great Depression where leader said. We each have to sacrifice for the sake of the nation and the collective and Mansa. This is about Half a million Americans die turn. World. War trying to free Europe. The same. To what you now to somehow justify depriving people of their inalienable rights to assemble to petition the government and of course, to worship as a community. Well of course, but it's more than that Laura. The Church Preaches the gospel of Jesus Christ Jesus died and rose again and the only source of eternal salvation when the church doesn't exist make sure it navigates around politicians whims the church exists in the world preached the Saving Gospel of Christ or not concerned about the flu we're working CERNA about eternity eternal life salvation, and the more dire circumstances become in the world around us the more critical. 00:45:14 - 00:49:48 The more essential the church becomes and the more important. The Gospel becomes I'll tell you something our church is literally flooded with people. We have them in every nook and cranny jammed together inside outside on several floors in our children's education building in the gym in a tent outside their flooding the place hear the message of forgiveness and salvation in a time when feared is being propagated on every. As. I listen to Selma. And the you know there's an old saying that says, in the time when all the world is a liar, people will flock to manny tells the truth. And that's John. Macarthur right now and he's telling the truth it's unconstitutional. It's illegal to restrict my movement. You can't quarantine me when I'm healthy. You can quarantine me when I'm sick or you have a reasonable suspicion that I'm sick. And so the. Contrast couldn't be more stark between the two sides in this debate or the two sides. In the discussion we've got the Joe. Biden. Side that wants to put literally everybody in a mask and make it the law that you don't have a choice and down to probably arresting you who knows here is Biden's pitch for a mask mandate by his own admission. He continued to lie about covert nineteen double down on the catastrophic mistakes that he's made, and perhaps worst of all made clear that he still doesn't have a plan. To bring us out of this crisis even said I quote. A lot of people think that masks are not good. Undercutting easiest most effective means we have reducing the spread of this disease I would call all the governors to the White House. And say because there's a question I think it's an can be answered in the positive a question whether I can mandate. Over state lines in every single state has to comply. Now our legal team thinks I can do that based upon the degree to which there's a crisis in those states and how bad things are for the country and if we don't do it what happens. But I would make the case. I'd make the case why it's necessary. Have the scientists to rate lay out in detail why and I would go to every governor and I go to governor's related Republican and Democratic Governors nine say we have to have this national manding we must do it. So. How does that make sense? How does it make sense that we have a national mask mandate? You know when when you have a state like you know Montana or no North Dakota or how how about this does it make sense to have a national mandate that includes Alaska? How about Guam what about Puerto Rico? How about these islands? They have the same breakout issues or infection issues everywhere else. To treat, New York City. And New Jersey and Los Angeles. The same is Cheyenne Wyoming. Or Chattanooga. Tennessee or. Panama City Florida just thinking about where some friends live you know or who knows you know a million other small towns. You know. Green Bay. Wisconsin. Is Not, Los Angeles, and the idea of treating all of these like a monolith is you know the old saying goes liberals don't care what what you do as long as it's mandatory. You know they just WanNa make sure that everybody is always being treated the same and they want equality of outcome, not equality of opportunity and such a big important difference in the philosophical difference between the parties. So thanks for joining. I'm going to wrap it up here and will head off to the weekend and yet the podcast out. So later today those who. were. How To Beat YouTube Algorithm - Bronwen

If you are given a chance to beat the algorithm of YouTube, would you do it? YouTube Producer Nate Woodbury will be explaining why you need to partner with YouTube's algorithm and not beat it. Stay tuned. How do you beat the YouTube algorithm? Got my good friend Bronwen here and she's asking me questions about the algorithm. And it's like, "You know what? Let's put this on YouTube because  I've got some answers." -I want to know what things penalize you like with algorithm. Like, if I put a link in the description, I won't have a ton of links in the description because I almost want it to be like a catalog. I'm like what does that do with algorithm. -Okay, so YouTube likes people to spend time on YouTube. So, if you link to something else, YouTube will notice that you click a link and it takes your to Facebook. You actually get penalized quite a lot if you send somebody to Facebook for YouTube. Same thing from Facebook. If you put a YouTube link on Facebook and people leave and go to YouTube, your post will be buried. -Okay. -Yeah. So, YouTube will not show your video to other viewers and Facebook will bury your post. So, really when you're... When you're on... When people on Facebook, they're expecting to have a Facebook experience. When people are on YouTube, they're expecting to have a YouTube experience. So promoting the other platforms from each other doesn't really make sense. They're different. Same with Instagram, same with Twitter. If people are on Twitter, they're not expecting to watch a 30 minute Netflix episode, right? If people are on Instagram, they're expecting to scroll through and see lots of photos. Maybe some short videos. They're not expecting to watch a 10 minute YouTube episode. -Right. -So, if there's a platform that you like, create content that people expect to consume on that platform. So, if you really like... Do you like Instagram? Let's pretend you did. -Okay. Well Let's pretend I love  YouTube. -But just... We'll talk about YouTube. If you really wanted to you enjoyed Instagram, you wanted to create Instagram content, it  doesn't make sense to create content that encourage people to come over here. Just create content that people like here and will enjoy because then they'll we'll follow you on that platform. So, the  same thing on YouTube is you want to create videos that do well on YouTube. That people like to watch. Now, when we're talking about links in your description, there's a lot of different things you're probably talking about affiliate links. -Yeah. -Okay. You can get one website approval. You can get more. But typically,  affiliate links, you can't get approved unless it's your own domain name. -Right. -So, you have to prove ownership of the domain. And you need to have a thousand subscribers on your YouTube channel. -Okay. -To be able to get website approved. -Awesome. -Okay? -Okay. -That's perfect. -So, it  gives you something to shoot for. You into a thousand subscribers. And you have to have a certain number of minutes of watch time. They do that so that you can't just pay for robot subscribers time in and... They just don't need to spam the system. If you really did that, you got 1,000 subscribers but then you  would see how many vs. how many subscribers are watching it, you just kill your stats. So, don't get... Now, you're still penalized a little bit even with an approved website. What YouTube says is you've got a score. You've got some type of score on your each video on your channel. - Okay. -And if people click a link in your video and go elsewhere, you're given a penalty. But if you have a website that's approved, they say that penalty is significantly reduced. -Okay. -And if people are going to your own website and they're entering your sales funnel or they're making a purchase, it's worth that penalty. And... I mean, we accept that penalty all the time. Our videos are doing well so it's not like it killed our channel or anything like that. Like it would be if we're constantly sending people to Facebook. I mean if people are spending time on YouTube and all of the  sudden they're gone, now they're on Facebook and YouTube and Google contract that. So, it's like we're going to kill this video. We're going to kill this channel because it's hurting our... -So, what's the way around that? Let's see I don't want any penalty because I like to think that way. -Think about it differently. So, YouTube has a partner program and what that means is advertisers  pay money to YouTube to show their ads. -Okay. -And then YouTube takes that money and they pay 55% of that to the creator of the videos. -Okay. -That's pretty cool. -Yeah. -So, it's cool in the sense that we can make ad money, ad revenue. -Right. -It takes a while to get there. You need to  make get millions of views to make thousands of dollars. But what's better... What's even more  valuable in my mind about the partner program as if you create content and do things that will make YouTube money. -Mm-hmm. -YouTube will promote your videos. -Okay... -So... -What if we  like want somebody to opt-in though? -Okay, so we'll get there.  -Okay. -We'll get there. Okay? Because that'swhat I do. That's what I want. All my  channels are backed by businesses. So, I don't necessarily do affiliate marketing but I have things that I want to sell. And we we put out videos that we want people to leave and go to the website  and opt-in to our list into our click funnels' sales funnel. Okay? But what we do, the content of our video, we create videos that... Here's a very specific  strategy. Remember Kris Krohn, we looked back in his history and we found a video that YouTube had promoted. It was titled, How to make money in your 20's?" In that video it had hundreds of thousand of views, okay?  -So, I... This was a year ago about right now, exactly a year ago,  I said, "Kris, we're going to remake this video. It's going to have the same title instead of it being 5 or so minutes long, we're going to make it a little bit longer." We actually ended up making it 20 minutes long on accident. We did plan on being that long. And at the time, he was real hesitant to put his car in the in the shot. He has the BMW i8 with the wing doors. And I told him, I said, "Kris...." -20 year old well like that. -"You're going to go pull out and then drive back in so I can film you with the car coming in. The wing door will go up, you'll get out and then I'll follow you with  the glide cam into your house. And we'll walk around and we'll film in a few different places while you tell the same story. Share the same concepts." Well, just make it more interesting. It ended up that his maid was actually vacuuming when we went in. And people love it because he's like, "Oh, hey! Cleaning lady." And you know, he walked around. People thought it was staged but was real. And he went. He sat he sat down on his pool table for part of it. He wondered his kitchen got a glass of water. And people just talked about, "Wow, he's inviting me into his home." So, that video ended up being 20 minutes long. The moral of the story is we found a video that YouTube had already promoted and so we thought, "Okay, let's take advantage of this. Let's partner with YouTube.  If YouTube likes this video, they're going to promote it, they're going to put ads with it and it's going to make YouTube money." Okay? We brought an $18,000 of ad revenue to us that first month. But more than that, even better than that, our channel went from 80,000 subscribers to 160,000 subscribers in 5 weeks. That is huge. That totally changed the the trajectory of this channel. And and it's... I mean we're up to 400,0000 subscribers now. Just because we've continued to do that same strategy. Even though we're talking about it being penalized for them leaving YouTube to go to your website, these videos, we have those links on there but we're putting the focus of our content of really  helping YouTube make money. We made a video that we knew it was going to show  ads the next thing we knew is going to be promoted... That was our hope and it worked.  And it really grew our channel which brought tons of leads to us. So, that makes sense? So, you definitely put the links on there. Get it approved and when somebody leaves and goes to your website,  it's worth the penalty. But yet in our case, it hasn't been a penalty enough that stopped YouTube for making money because we're making money or videos that are YouTube friendly, that are advertiser friendly. Make sense? -Yeah. You don't think so hard. He was telling the same story just said it in a different setting, right? -So, going back to the the question we addressed at  the beginning like how do you beat the YouTube algorithm. If you do find a way, if you do find a loophole to beat the algorithm, it's eventually going to be fixed. It's going to be, you know, there's going to be a new algorithm written. The YouTube algorithm is actually thousands of algorithms. So, we're going to keep making it better and better and better which is a good thing. And here's why: When you go to YouTube, you know, the screen comes up and it's got all these recommendations for you. The algorithms are working to show you recommendations that it will think you will want to watch. So, instead of (I'll just go for me) showing me boxing episodes which I don't like boxing or showing me you know, auto mechanics or showing me flower arranging, it doesn't... Show me those things because I've never watched those. Maybe I would like flower arranging. I don't know. So, it shows me things similar to what I've watched in the past and things that I've subscribed to. And the algorithm just  gets better and better. And what's funny is I know a lot of YouTubers from different YouTube communities here in Utah. And they they talk about when the algorithm changes how much it hurts them. Because they're trying to find a way to beat the algorithm and so they're going along getting great results and then all sudden there's a change in their views drop, guess what? All of my channels, I produce 11 channels right now. And when those algorithm changes  happen, nothing happens to me. -Because they're not trying to beat it. You're just  working with it. -Right. -Paying your taxes, just do it. -Well... And it's it's not just... Because I can avoid penalties, It's because it really works for my best interest. Because if we make videos  that try and make YouTube money, YouTube will promote those videos without us having to pay for that promotion. So, it works really, really well. And then because I create videos that are searchable that people want to find, I'm not just trying to piggyback on somebody else's some ninja tactic. But I'm actually creating content that people want to watch that doesn't get affected. -So, it really is just about like simplifying it? -I think it's... Because it's simple. The keyword research, just follow the rules, get the link approved. -So, I would say in summary, love the algorithm. Don't fear any algorithm changes because you don't need to if you're just really creating content that answers people questions. You're putting real value out there and you're not trying to trick the system. You know, if you do find a loophole that works, plan  on it only working for a short time. And then being really sad about it. Do want to hear a funny story? -Yeah. -So, I used to do... This was... This is going back almost like... It's going back 8 years ago. I had a web design service and I advertised on Craigslist. And Craigslist only wants you to advertise in your local area. -Okay. -But I found a way that if I bought... If I rented a phone number from another area, another area code; And I bought  a proxy IP address which could mask where my computer was located in another another area; And I used an article spinner to take my post and rewrite it  in a different way so it didn't look like a duplicate. Then I could post 200 different areas a day. And I... So I found this loophole. I found a way to hack the Craigslist algorithm, right? --of posting. And it worked for a while. But eventually... I had a fault... I had a person hired full-time that was doing that and posting about 200 ads per day. And I was getting about 20 or 25 website sales a month from it. -Cool. -But  guess what happened when the the Craigslist algorithm changed and recognized that my proxy IP addresses were.. -Banned? -I got  banned. It got ghosted. My ads would show up for me but not for anyone else. And so, my leads just disappeared. And I went from... I went from like 25 website sales in the previous each month, I think  down to like 3 or 5 website sells the next month and it really hurt. And I thought... I thought to myself I've got 2 options. I can find a better way to beat the algorithm again. And I am confident that I could have or I can just figure out something else. And I figured out something else on LinkedIn. It's kind of funny because I found a way to hack LinkedIn. I beat their system, kind of. Kind of. I stayed within their parameters but then that changed. So... -So, you have good experience in screwing up and... -Yeah. I know... I know I have experience with hacking the algorithms or trying to beat it. And just know that it comes to an end. Because that's the moral of the story. So, for several years now, many years, I guess like 5 or 6 years now, I've... With YouTube, I focused on partnering with the algorithm. And it's been so nice. The stress has gone, the fear is gone, the worry of it crashing on you and trying to figure it out that you know... "What? The algorithms changed. Now, we got to figure it out..." -That's such a better mindset instead of like the algorithm is my enemy. -I Kind of forgotten about it. -Yeah. -Alright. In this video, I mentioned keyword research. And I have a gift for you. I put together a keyword research guide that in fact it's a Google Doc that I've put step by step everything that you can do to do keyword research and I do want to say that it's easy. It's really simple. It used to be really complicated but I found a way of really simplifying it. So, that it's really simple and it really just transforms. So, you can film a video today, post it on YouTube now and get ranked on YouTube. So, I want to give that to you. Just on the screen here, you'll see that you can text Hero1 to the number 415- 528-7403. And you'll get access to that keyword research guide. And of course, subscribe. Now, you've watched the video this far... So, we'll see you tomorrow.

Hey, everyone! Geek Tank here, wishing you an early Happy July 4th! We hope everyone enjoys the holiday! On today's episode, we return to a topic we visited last month regarding source material and their subsequent adaptations. Last time, we focused a bit more on ways adaptations can go wrong (*cough, cough* Game of Thrones Season 8 *cough, cough*), but we felt there was a lot to be said for adaptations that go right. Perhaps even too much for us to say... but we try our best to express our answer to the question, "What makes a good adaptation?" Well? Let's hear your answers or your examples of a good adaptation. Smash that like button, subscribe for more of our nonsense, and voice your opinion in the comments below! And let's not also forget that we're holding a...wait for it... That's right, a giveaway! I’m Theo Mayer - the Chief Technologist for the Commission and your host. Welcome to the show. [MUSIC] Preface In July of 1917, shortly after America enters the war, congress passes a massive $640,000,000 aviation bill which is signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson. That is over $13.5 Billion in 2018 dollars and at the time it is one of the largest appropriation for a single idea that the country has ever made - It passes congress with little or  no objection - This is in no small part - because there are so many advocates that believe this incredible new technology of flying machines can be pivotal in the war. In support of the idea, famed airplane pioneer Orville Wright declares: “When my brother and I built and flew the first man-carrying machine, we thought that we were introducing into the world an invention which would make further wars…  practically impossible since both sides know exactly what the other is doing. “ Orville reasons further: "If the allies' armies are equipped with such a number of airplanes as to keep the enemy planes entirely back of the line, so that they are unable to direct gunfire or to observe the movement of the allied troops— in other words, if the enemy's eyes can be put out — it will be possible to end the war. “ With that as background let's jump into our Centennial Time Machine and roll back 100 years ago this week to see how the US is doing in realizing that idea... [MUSIC TRANSITION] [SOUND EFFECT] World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week It is the second week of May, 1918. The pages of the Official Bulletin, the government's war gazette, the newspaper, the New York Times and the magazine Aerial age Weekly are all filled with a story of scandal involving the US aircraft manufacturing industry. Charges of waste, incompetence, malfeasance and graft are being bandied about. And one of the more interesting parts is that a key character leading the charges against the government's Aircraft production board and the airplane manufacturers is none other than Gutzon Borglum. Who the heck is Gutzon Borglum? You may ask.. Well, he is the sculptor who is going to become famous for a little sculpture he will do between 1927 and 1941 in South Dakota where he will sculpt four heads into the crags of a mountain called Rushmore… But in May of 1918, already an established sculptor - he is busy accusing the US Airplane industry of incompetence! [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: May 6, 1918 A headline in the NY times reads: Wilson orders Borglum aircraft charges sifted And the story reads: The demand for an investigation of allegations of graft in connection with the production of military aircraft was heeded by Pres. Wilson today when he decided to turn the whole matter over to Atty. Gen. Gregory, who was instructed to make a thorough investigation of the "wholesale charges" in regard to the production of aircraft. The charges were made by sculptor Gutzon Borglum. Another sensational feature was added to the case tonight when it became known that Maj. General George O Squier Chief signal Officer of the Army, who was accused by Mr. Borglum of hampering the work of investigation undertaken by the latter, had countered the accusations with a request for a military court of inquiry. The story is the big buzz in all the national news and aeroplane industry media. And as we started to explore it, it gets ever more strange - Clearly something is up because, the US has spent an incredible fortune and only delivered 5,000 planes - mostly trainers not fighters - what’s up with senate investigation?  The justice department probe? The President’s statements? The army’s court of inquiry? What are the roots of this nearly frenetic situations??? Well… Let’s take a little closer look at our buddy the sculptor Gutzon Borglum - seriously! He is actually the center of the story! In a biography on him that we found - and we have the link for you in the podcast notes, here is what we learn. Borglum makes drawings for a new plane he called the “fish”. His idea is rejected by the government's Aircraft production board,  that is in charge of approving plane design for govt money -- Borglum notes many, many other designers get rejected too. Apparently, he thinks of a way to capitalize on the airplane manufacturing chaos -- So he complains through some Washington contacts that he has,  about the terrible wastage going on with all with that money earmarked for plane design and building in the US. The bad buzz reaches all the way to President Wilson and in Autumn 1917-- BORGLUM himself runs an investigation and submits a report to the government on the lack of airplane production. Now… Apparently Borglum postures that he has been given full govt authority to do this investigation -- but actually he hasn’t.  He just seems to be running on self-appointed bravado and posturing as if he DOES have officially sanctioned authority. Now President Wilson actually corrects him in the spring -- but damage has already been done to many, many aeronautical companies who have been dragged through the mud very publicly. This week in 1918, on May 10th-- it comes to light that Borglum, in fact,  is using his influence with the president to get contracts for himself and a new company -- for which he is a silent partner. The scheme, apparently is that he is managing to discredit company after company with the govt’s blessing-- leaving HIS company to pick up contracts in the aftermath. Even as this comes to light, Borglum “stonewalls” all of the accusations and accused his detractors as purveyors of “fake news” and of being liars and just continues his attacks on other aeronautical companies. A lot of reorganization takes place in the wake of this controversy - and probes and official investigations will continue  -- but we wondered -- what ever became of Borglum!? He continues to be shaker, mover and influencer all the way… here are some highlights In 1918, he was one of the drafters of the Czechoslovakian  declaration of independence (despite being an american by birth to Danish immigrants), he continues to make sculptures and memorials, famously sculpting an amazing and striking work called “The Aviator” which sits on   the University of Virginia campus, of course he gets permission and funding to carve up an entire mountain at Mount Rushmore creating a historic and iconic work of public art. He also happens to be a very high ranking member of the KKK, a Freemason, and an organizer of the Armory Show in New York. Gutzon Borglum - an genuinely amazing and fascinating character --- banging on a hornets nest in aeroplane manufacturing industry 100 years ago this week - In the war that changed the world! Spotlight on the Media James Reese Europe 100th Anniversary Tribute Event Music: Castle House Rag and One Step, by James Reese Europe from the CD “Take a Bow” by the New York Jazzharmonic Trad-Jazz Sextet. That clip was from Castle House Rag and One Step composed by James Reese Europe who is the subject of our spotlight on the media with an  upcoming James Reese Europe 100th Anniversary Tribute concert. Who is James Reese Europe? Well, his Library of Congress biography opens with a quote from Eubie Blake, another famed American composer, lyricist, and jazz man: "James Reese Europe was our benefactor and inspiration. Even more, he was the Martin Luther King of music." Europe earned this praise by being an unflagging innovator not only in his compositions and orchestrations, but in his organizational ability and leadership. One of America's greatest musicians, he progressed from strength to strength but was pointlessly cut down at what seemed like the pinnacle of his career.” Well that is just a setup up - To tell us about the man, and the Tribute concert, which will take place on June 8th, 2018, in New York City is Ron Wasserman, artistic director for the New York Jazzharmonic. Welcome, Ron! [welcome/greetings] [Ron-- our intro to Mr. Europe was sort of a tease - can you tell us about the man please?] [OK.. Now about the tribute - where is it, what is it and if we are lucky enough to be in NY to attend - what will we experience?] [How did this come about?] [Ron: Any closing thoughts about the legacy of the Harlem Hellfighters on music?] [thank you/goodbyes] Ron Wasserman is the artistic director for the New York Jazzharmonic. She is an expert on Scouting's early history as well as her grandfather's life as a naturalist, artist and, at one time, an internationally acclaimed literary figure, and she recently edited and published his autobiography, Trail of an Artist-Naturalist: The Autobiography of Ernest Thompson Seton Welcome, Julie! [greetings/welcome] [Julie - The history of the boy scouts -  actually begin in England with Lord Baden-Powell in the early 1900s, but your grandfather is also said to have influenced him - can you tell us the story?] [So when the the Boy Scouts of America officially organize? [if it did not come up in the previous question] [It’s a little off-topic but I wanted to ask… I read a fascinating account about your great grandfather - who apparently decided to present your grandfather with a bill for the entire cost of raising him, including the doctor’s cost for his birth….  and that Ernest actually paid him - Is that myth?] [Back to the subject at hand - by the time America enters WWI, scouting is still very young but President Wilson gives the young men a specific charter and roll in the war effort - can you tell us about that?] [Katherine and I were talking about this - if the Boy Scouts of America was formed in 1910 - and aimed at adolescents - the very first scouts would have likely served in WWI -  did any of them become notables? ] [Current scouting -- we’ve seen several eagle scouts with memorial restoration efforts-- ] [goodbye/thanks] Dr. Julie Seton is the granddaughter of Ernest Thompson Seton and an expert on Scouting's early history. This first struck me when we reported on some commemoration efforts by our friends and counterparts in New Zealand.   Of course, there is our OWN major work of pubic art, the wwI memorial sculpture by Sabin Howard - but truly notable in all this is the United Kingdom’s centennial support of 14-18 NOW, their WWI Centenary Art Commission, implementing a five-year program of arts experiences intended to connect people with the First World War-- To tell us about it, we’re joined from the UK by Jenny Waldman, the director of the program. Jenny, welcome to the podcast! [welcome/greetings] [Jenny, can you tell us a bit about how 14-18 NOW came about? ] [You have, and are doing some great project - can you tell us about some of them? ] [In the lead in, I mentioned that commemorating something like WWI through art experiences was not immediately obvious to me - but it seems like a very important part of the puzzle. Could you help our audience understand why?] [Jenny - we want to keep reporting on your efforts - especially those projects that are now coming “over here”. What can we look forward to? [if these things did not already get covered]] [Jenny Waldman thank you so much for joining us today!] [thanks/goodbyes] Jenny Waldman is the director of 14-18 NOW. Learn more about the organization and the many many wonderful projects by following the link in the podcast notes. Link:https://www.1418now.org.uk/about/ Speaking WW1 Welcome to our weekly feature “Speaking World War 1” -- Where we explore the words & phrases that are rooted in the war  --- Waking up to a steaming cup of coffee is a universal pleasure. It’s warm, it’s fortifying, and it can help you make it into and  through your day -- That warm drink is sometimes referred to as a Cup o’ Joe… and of course we wondered where that phrase came from? In fact, this nickname for coffee has rather murky origins, with several theories being put forward. And one of the most common legends is that the ‘Joe’ in the phrase refers to Josephus Daniels, the American Secretary of the Navy during World War I. Daniels was an ardent prohibitionist, and as such he banned the consumption of alcohol on Navy ships well before Prohibition or even America’s declaration of war-- It was General Order 99 issued on June 1, 1914 that ended the shipboard toddy of rum for the sailors. So our swabbies were forced to indulge in other beverages, particularly coffee-- which led the men to to refer to  a serving of coffee as a ‘cup of joe’. There is some doubt in the truth of this myth -- since alcohol was already hard to come by onboard vessels for ordinary sailors, General Order 99 had little impact on their lives. It’s possible that the name ‘Joe’ denoted an ordinary everyday man, reflecting the rise in coffee consumption at the turn of the 20th century-- but we like the josephus myth. A cup of joe - this week’s phrase for speaking WW1. There are links for you in the podcast notes. Lewis Hine Hi Theo -- We shared on Facebook this week what I think is one of the most interesting photography articles from The Atlantic-- the article “100 Years Ago: France in the Final Year of World War I” is a series of 35 photographs from American Photographer Lewis Hine. Hine had a long and tumultuous career; he was well known after working for the National Child Labor Committee, photographing children at work in coal mines, factories and farms all across the country. His images of children as young as four, their faces smeared with dirt and soot, machinery towering over them, are incredibly poignant. And as the War continued to rage in 1918 -- he traveled to Europe to photograph the American Red Cross relief programs. The photographs were also intended to drum up support for the Red Cross and to appeal to the American populace back home. The images include portraits of young French orphans, lone survivors standing amongst the rubble of flattened frontline towns, Doughboys fishing in a river outside the Chateau de Blois and exhausted wounded soldiers convalescing at Red Cross Hospitals across France. They have Hine’s recognizable haunting quality -- and are seriously beautiful. See them all at the link in the podcast notes. That’s it for this week in the Buzz.
