Kemi Nekvapil on the true meaning of power and how to live and lead without apology

Inside Influence

When you hear the word ‘power', what first springs to mind? Do you immediately think of its absence, the moments you felt ‘power-less' – or the moments you showed up as the fullest version of yourself? Is ‘power' a word or sensation that feels like it belongs to you? Or is it a word that usually belongs to someone else?My guest today wants to redefine how we think, approach and own the word ‘power' in our lives. Today's Guest Kemi Nekvapil is one of Australia's leading coaches for female executives and entrepreneurs. She describes her life's work as being to ‘empower women to live and lead without apology'. Kemi is a certified facilitator for Brenè Brown's ‘Dare To Lead' program, and also a facilitator for The Hunger Project Australia which works with communities to enable them to realize a future free from hunger and poverty. She is also a highly sought after international speaker and author who has just published her latest book: ‘Power; A woman's guide to living and leading without apology'. The book looks at how to navigate the inevitable challenges we face from a place of unapologetic power – in order to show up at the highest possible level. Instagram: @keminekvapilLinked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kemi-nekvapil-58000027/You'll LearnThe true meaning of the word power, and how it's our definitions of the word – rather than our own innate strength – that keeps us small. What stops us from stepping into our power. Including all the ways we give our power away, in order to feel a sense of safety and belonging. The right questions to ask to reclaim your sense of power. In particular, when faced with people and situations that would usually make us shrink. Why real power is often found in the quiet moments, the small decisions, the micro-choices – rather than the big grand gestures. Finally, how to access your intuition and realize that the greatest power comes from outwardly trusting your inner voice. For me, the word ‘power' has shifted in meaning, particularly over the last few years. Previously it had the energy of pushing. Building, creating, showing up, using your voice – changing what needs to be changed. Forcing where necessary. Yet now, largely thanks to this podcast. That's fundamentally shifted. Now when I think about the word ‘power', when I embody it, when I witness it - the feeling is one of ‘pulling'. Showing up and holding yourself with such clarity, such intention, such gravity. That the right people and situations are quite literally pulled towards you. That to me is real power.References and links mentionedhttps://www.keminekvapil.com/If you liked this episode, you might also enjoyDeb GruenfeldThanks for tuning into this week's episode of the Inside Influence Podcast! Today's question is the holy grail of influence. It's the question that any influencer that wants to make an impact with their words, ideas or mission strives to answer: How do you tell stories that change the way the world works? My guest today has built his career around answering this question - and still sits at the coal face, mining away at the ever-evolving answer.Today's Guest Jeremy Connell Waite is a man of many hats. He's Communications Designer at IBM where he coaches partners and executives to create compelling pitches and keynotes for purpose-driven brands. He also created IBM's Communications Thinking™ framework, now used across the globe to help future business leaders to tell stronger purpose-driven stories, on screen, on stage or in the boardroom.Having been Voted the #1 Most Influential Person on Twitter for #BigData,Top 30 Most Influential Digital Marketer in the world and the 3rd most Influential Social Media Marketer in the UK.In April this year Jeremy also founded the Earthshot Academy - a storytelling platform to help young professionals and business leaders who ‘want to change the world with their words and ideas'. If this wasn't enough, he's also written four books, run his own agency and worked for brands such as Nike, Vodafone and Uber. I first came across Jeremy after a friend recommended I check out his LinkedIn profile, where I was just blown away by the visual story maps he was creating. Literally decoding on one page the key structures, moments and secrets of the greatest storytellers of our time.He calls himself an industrial storyteller – I would say he's a storytelling scientist.LinkedIn : https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremypaulwaite/ You'll LearnThe key emotion you must evoke to get people to consider and take action on your ideas - basically the magic ingredient of influence. What ‘elephants', ‘wild geese' and ‘black swans' have to do with purpose-driven influence and how to use them all within your storytelling. How to tailor your storytelling to make maximum impact – including staying flexible when it comes to ‘what you want to say' vs. ‘what your audience needs to hear'.How much preparation a world changing speech actually takes (HINT: a lot more than you think). What does it take to face your critics?I mean squarely, unflinchingly – with full self-responsibility. However, and this part is all important, still willing to defend yourself when it counts?Responsibility is an interesting word. I always understood it to mean ‘the ability to respond'. Taking full ownership of the fact that, while you may not always be able to control WHAT happens – you are always able to control what you do next.As a place to begin, I think it's a good one. However, what we don't often talk about is moments where – the stakes are sky high, the information is ever changing – and there are only bad options on the table. That, as my next guest would say, is leadership in the hot seat. Now imagine you're new to the reins of one of the world's most respected brands, have woken up to a Global tragedy that implodes a huge proportion of your revenue, an out of control 24 hour news cycle, all eyes on you – and the legacy of the company now rests in your hands.Today's Guest Jeff was the 9th Chairman of GE and served as CEO for 16 years. He has been named one of the “World's Best CEOs” three times by Barron's. During his tenure as CEO, GE was named “America's Most Admired Company” by Fortune magazine and one of “The World's Most Respected Companies” in polls by Barron's and the Financial Times. He has received fifteen honorary degrees and numerous awards for business leadership and chaired the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness under the Obama administration. He is now also the author of ‘HOT SEAT', a memoir on leadership in times of crisis. A book that grabbed my attention with one of it's opening lines… “My legacy as the CEO of GE was at best ‘controversial”.Now, if you take any time to read the press coverage of Jeff's tenure as CEO of GE, having taken over the reins from the legendary Jack Welch in 2001. Along with accolades you might also read words like ‘tumultuous', ‘misguided' or at worst ‘a disaster'.Yet, what you might not read, is that during those 16 years, GE generated more earnings and cash flow than the previous 110 years combined. You'll LearnThe three voices that every leader must master in order to effectively drive change. Why the role of any leader during – and after – a crisis is to learn how to ‘absorb the fear' of their teams. Why it's so much easier to talk about our successes than our failures, especially if there was no great hero's triumph at the end. Hey everyone - the Inside Influence team and I are taking an eight week sabbatical this winter (or summer if you're in the Northern Hemisphere) to generally reset, recalibrate and refill our creative tanks. For many of us, myself included, that means traveling across the world to see family members where it's been far too long between hugs.To keep you fueled while we're gone, we've traveled back through the archives and pulled out four of our favorite Inside Influence episodes of all time. I can also hand on heart say that each of these has, in some way, radically changed how I show up, lead and influence. If you're new to the Inside Influence crew, enjoy the ride. If you're a long-time listener, these are definitely conversations worth listening to twice.Stay safe and we'll see you back with a brand new season in August.Today's Guest In this episode I speak with Nancy Duarte – CEO and founder of Silicon Valley's largest and most successful communications firm, Duarte Inc. Nancy has spent the last 30 years immersed in the world of human storytelling and has been behind the scenes of some of the most compelling speeches – or as she calls them' impassioned pleas' – that we've ever seen. Including Al Gore's ‘An Inconvenient Truth'. She's worked with the thought leaders of global brands like Apple, Cisco, Facebook, GE, Google, HP, TED, Twitter, the World Bank – I'll stop now. She's also a renowned author of ‘Illuminate', ‘Resonate' and ‘Slide:ology'. Her TED talk ‘The Secret Structure of Great Talks' has also been watched over 3 million times. She's been the master of the crazy world of presenting since way before speaking was cool, back in the days of projectors and transparencies, where you had to draw your idea onto a sheet of plastic. You'll LearnThe one pattern all the world's greatest speeches have in commonThe power of using contrast when building frenzy behind your ideaHow to create action on the back of any presentations by ‘illuminating' a new pathWhy we sabotage our own ideas – and how to let the struggle transform usSo, think of this as an absolute masterclass in how to convey an idea in its most potent form. Jeremy Cowart - Getting Past “I Can't” to Change Yourself and the WorldWe all have amazing ideas. Some are hard earned while others just come to us while we are walking down the hall on one unexpected day. But to make those ideas a reality, we need to get past the “I can't moment” that invariably follows. On today's Inside Influence Podcast episode I talk to Jeremy Cowart, celebrity photographer, artist, and entrepreneur, about how fear lies on the other side of great ideas and how he has learned to get past those fears. Jeremy Cowart has been named the “Most Influential Photographer on the Internet” by Huffington Post, Forbes and Yahoo. He has presented at TEDx and the United Nations. His photos have appeared in well-known publications such as Time Magazine, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and Sports Illustrated. He has taken portraits of stars such as Taylor Swift, Sting, Britney Spears, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Heidi Klum, and Gwyneth Paltrow. He is also well-known for his “Purpose Hotel” Kickstarter campaign. The aim of the project is to create a hotel chain where all the goods, services, and decor used generates a financial benefit for the marginalised around the world. A luxury hotel designed to connect people around the world to the stories of others - and enable them to support.Today's Guest Jeremy CowartJeremy grew up in Hendersonville Tennessee. He was a struggling student who seemed to fail at everything from piano to maths. “I can't do it” was his motto. But his supportive parents were insistent that he could do anything: “I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me”.Then he discovered a love of drawing and started to believe in himself. After high school, his parents suggested that he study graphic design. But he did not feel smart enough to use computers. But he tried it and ended up becoming a designer and then a digital photographer right as digital photography was taking off.Fast forward over 20 years, and he is an influential photographer to the stars and renowned social entrepreneur. In addition to his photographic work, he helped start the global movement Help Portrait, founded an online learning platform See University, formed an idea development community called LIMINAL Society, invented a new digital photographic technique called Lightograph, and is founder and CIO of Purpose Hotel. He has also written four books and is a sought after presenter.Website: www.jeremycowart.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/jeremycowartTwitter: www.twitter.com/jeremycowartInstagram: www.instagram.com/jeremycowartLinkedIn:www.linkedin.com/in/jeremycowart“I think a lot of people want to help but a lot of times they just don't know how … but when you can align helping with people's natural passions and interests, magic can happen.” “I have pursued over 75 different ideas and probably more than half of them have been total utter failures, or I have abandoned them altogether.
