When running our own business, it's hard to see the line between us and the business. I often have to remind myself that my business is not me. Instead, my business is something I birthed. This means that our business might have similarities to us — like our children do — but it is its own entity. And if we don't see it that way, we can miss the messages it might be trying to send us. In today's business pod, we're going to talk about:How you can connect with your business' energy betterThe signs it's trying to send youSome downloads from me about your bizCan't wait for you to listen. “The World Needs Music,” the title track for composer Richard Peshkin's recentlyreleased album, is a fun, beautiful pop song that shares a royal lineage in both itsmusical heritage and message.“It's fairly obvious that the world is in a total state of disunity, chaos and disharmony,”said Richard, “and there's so little that unites people and so much that createsdivisions.”And music, he said, is one of the two things he's seen that unites people. The second issports.“You can go to a football game, and you don't even know the person next to you, nevermet him, but if you root for the same team, by the end of the game you're high-fivingand hugging, and you might have hated the guy under other circumstances.”Then there's music. “When you go to a concert, and you have 40 thousand or 50 thousand people, and some are white and some are brown, some are yellow, some are gay, some are straightand some are everything,” he said, “and they're all there in unity to celebrate the powerand the beauty of music.”And now there's “The World Needs Music”:The world is an angry place to be We've got to sing, not shout We need to figure it outA way to sing away the hurt we feel today Let's put it in a song it's betterThe song, beautifully sung by Kelsey Demsky, who also stars in the video, wasproduced by Mick James, known for his work on Criss Angel's Mindfreak show. Mickwas the producer for the entire album, which features Kelsey as the female vocalist andDan Brenner as the male vocalist.Richard, a retired physician, has been writing songs since he was 10, when hecopyrighted his first song, “Nadine.” He has been composing ever since. In 2019 hewrote the music and lyrics for a musical comedy, Boca Bound,” which was on the ballotfor Grammy nomination. The 10 tracks of “The World Needs Music,” the first recording he has released, haveattracted a wide audience so far. A second album, again featuring Kelsey, Dan andMick, is ready for release around March, and a third is in process. He writes his own music and lyrics.“That's something I pride myself in,” he said. “Some of my musical heroes did, somedidn't, and it's kind of neat to do both, so you don't have to answer to any critics.”Now we come to musical ancestry. His heroes of musical composition include HalDavid, Carole King, Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, the stars of Motown, James Taylor and,the chief idol in his pantheon, Burt Bacharach.“Burt Bacharach has had an enormous effect on me in my life through his music. I'veseen him in concert in various venues throughout my life, and his music has meantmore to me than I could ever put into words. The lyrics written by Hal David, of course, were unbelievable.”Bacharach wrote the music and David the lyrics for 1965's hit “What the World NeedsNow.” Sixty years later, the song still enjoys great popularity. For a couple of decades, itwas an anthem of a movement to unite people in their common humanity.“The World Needs Music” is “kind of an homage to that song but brought up into anothertime period where people can celebrate the unifying value of music.”“We can all sing together and maybe put aside our differences,” he said.He hopes that his song will become an anthem for things that bring people together.“When I wrote it, Mick, my producer-arranger, and I discussed the instrumentation andeverything because we wanted it to sound like something you could sing at a highschool or middle school, a grammar school or college. I could always picture youngchildren singing it together in harmony — there's a lot of harmonies in that song —before they learn how to hate.”The album is a demonstration of what he wants music to do for people.“What I want is for people to do what I do — sing the music, feel better because of themusic, get out of a funk maybe, enhance things. Like, if I'm in love, make me feel lovemore. If you're sad, music can make you happy. If you're happy, music can make youhappier.”He wrote the songs with multiple genres in mind. The second song, coming right after“The World Needs Music,” is “Shut Up,” which almost became the one selected topromote the album. It is a pop version — and a hilarious video — based on a true storyabout a couple's dinner confrontation over cooking.“Right after ‘Shut Up' is a beautiful ballad called ‘I Love You.' I'm constantly aware ofbalancing those things,” he said.Enrich your life by connecting to Richard Peshkin on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.Single, “The World Needs Music,” YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBNOGJInxSYSingle, “The World Needs Music,” Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/track/4fohtm5CmZGYXI2jHRdk1P?si=61dd20d77185484fAmazon Music: https://www.amazon.com/music/player/artists/B0BTKL6L8T/richard-peshkin Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/richard-peshkin/1669340892 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6ckuIpAbleH8DaGCsHzwOfYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RichardPeshkin

Times are always changing, but even in 2023, there is still a stigma around being queer, particularly as a teenager. In this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we had the honor of engaging in a heartfelt conversation with Willow – an inspiring queer teenager who has embarked on a transformative journey of championing the LGBTQ community.Unfortunately, there is a lot of generational hate and fear directed at the LGBTQ community. Willow stands as a beacon of resilience, dedicated to breaking down barriers and fostering an environment where people can really embrace their authentic selves. While it took her until the age of 16 to come out, Willow bravely opened up to her mom who couldn't have been more supportive. Today, she is an 18-year-old, openly gay "coder" who volunteers for Planned Parenthood. She lobbies for human rights, for the LGBTQ community, and for children and teens, who, like her, may feel that they “don't fit in.”  In today's episode, we cover: The evolution of the way we use the word “queer”What it was like for Willow growing up realizing she was not like other girlsThe societal pressures on women to become wives and mothersThe topic of untangling gender and sexualityThe mental health impact of having to deny who you truly are How coming out can change your life and mental health for the betterThe generational hate and fear around the idea of being gayThe importance of being supportive of the gay people in your lifeFinding friends that let you be who you are Willow's advice to anyone who has bullied kids who are different What we all need to understand about sex educationWe hope you enjoyed our conversation with Willow! Alexander Dreymon is the star of a great show on Netflix called “The Last Kingdom.” He plays a Viking, so you're literally not going to find a guy who is more stereotypically masculine. But I've gotten to know Alexander recently and he's also incredibly thoughtful. We cover a lot of ground in this conversation: marriage, parenting, anger therapy, sleep, human connection, meditation, masculinity, and, uh, how to show your body on Netflix without developing body dysmorphia. We also talk a lot about his show, which is awesome, although it is coming to an end — just a few days ago, Netflix posted the series finale, a movie-length episode called “Seven Kings Must Die” that wraps up the whole story. In this episode we talk about:how having male friends makes his romantic relationship even betterThe importance of therapy, of silliness and of kindnessthe importance of exercise in his life and how he tries not to get overly attached to his body looking a certain waya whole discussion between the two of us on the Buddhist idea of non-self what his meditation practice looks like now that he has a toddler around the housewhat it's like to wrap up his show, the Last Kingdom, and what might be nextFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/-alexander-dreymon-585 To join a live coaching session, sign up at tenpercent.com/coaching.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This report details the full findings of the world's largest four-day working week trial to date, comprising 61 companies and around 2,900 workers, that took place in the UK from June to December 2022. The design of the trial involved two months of preparation for participants, with workshops, coaching, mentoring and peer support, drawing on the experience of companies who had already moved to a shorter working week, as well as leading research and consultancy organisations. The report results draw on administrative data from companies, survey data from employees, alongside a range of interviews conducted over the pilot period, providing measurement points at the beginning, middle, and end of the trial. Discussion Points:Background on the five-day workweekWe'll set out to prove or review two central claims:Reduce hours worked, and maintain same productivityReduced hours will provide benefits to the employeesDigging in to the Autonomy organization and the researchers and authorsSays “trial” but it's more like a pilot program61 companies, June to December 2022Issues with methodology - companies will change in 6 months coming out of Covid- a controlled trial would have been betterThe pilot only includes white collar jobs - no physical, operational, high-hazard businessesThe revenue numbersAnalysing the staff numbers- how many filled out the survey? What positions did the respondents hold in the company?Who experienced positive vs. negative changes in individual resultsInterviews from the “shop floor” was actually CEOs and office staffEliminating wasted time from the five-day weekWhat different companies preferred employees to do with their ‘extra time'Assumption 1: there is a business use case benefit- not trueAssumption 2: benefits for staff - mixed resultsTakeaways:Don't use averagesFinding shared goals can be good for everyoneBe aware of burden-shiftingThe answer to our episode's question – It's a promising idea, but results are mixed, and it requires more controlled trial research Quotes:“It's important to note that this is a pre-Covid idea, this isn't a response to Covid.” - Dr. Drew“...there's a reason why we like to do controlled trials. That reason is that things change in any company over six months.” - Drew“ …a lot of the qualitative data sample is very tiny. Only a third of the companies got spoken to, and only one senior representative who was already motivated to participate in the trial, would like to think that anything that their company does is successful.” - David“I'm pretty sure if you picked any company, you're taking into account things like government subsidies for Covid, grants, and things like that. Everyone had very different business in 2021-2022.” - Drew“We're not trying to accelerate the pace of work, we're trying to remove all of the unnecessary work.” - Drew“I think people who plan the battle don't battle the plan. I like collaborative decision-making in general, but I really like it in relation to goal setting and how to achieve those goals.” - David Resources:Link to the Pilot StudyAutonomyThe Harwood Experiment EpisodeThe Safety of Work PodcastThe Safety of Work on LinkedInFeedback@safetyofwork

(ie Diet Culture)What has helped Ella heal and thrive in life.Talking about our struggles. It takes away the power that the struggle has over us.  There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Acknowledge the thoughts that are keeping you stuck. When you feel gross/fat etc “I don't love how I am feeling right now-I wonder what is happening outside of my life that might factor in to why I am feeling this way?” DO NOT IGNORE THE THOUGHTS .The food isn't actually the problem-it's the thoughts about food.Practice BODY NEUTRALITY. Practice food neutrality.  Instead of food is good or bad.Body & food neutrality is NOT glorifying obesity Don't assume that thin people are happy “thin-ness does not = happiness”What we REALLY want is to feel pretty, to be seen, to being valued AND YOU CAN FEEL THOSE THINGS IN EVERY BODY TYPE.Be ok with leaning into discomfort, so you do not miss out on life experiences. Life is so much easier when you free up all the brain space and the energy you used to worry about all those things. It is HARD TO BELIEVE IT IS TRUE…give yourself grace as you practice. “I don't like how my stomach looks and I am still funny, loving, Ella.” My body is the least interesting thing about me.We don't need to bond over hating ourselves comments Set boundaries in your life so you don't surround yourself with triggering circumstances and peopleDon't wait “till things get bad” to get help. Recovery – a return to a normal state of health, mind, or strengthWhen it comes to sleep, most guys know they don't get enough. They go to bed too late, wake up too early and spend too much time sitting in a cubicle at work. They're always tired and unable to perform at their best. What these men may not recognize is the direct impact rest and recovery have on their overall well-being.Being able to adequately rest will allow you to recover sufficiently, which will help you be able to perform at your peak. If you are not well rested, the effects can be substantial, both mentally and physically. There is a lot more that goes into rest and recovery than simply getting a good night's rest. What you do throughout the day, your diet, your work routine, how you train, and your nighttime routine are a few crucial things that play a significant role in your ability to rest and recover. With the many factors out there, it can seem a little daunting when it comes down to knowing where to begin. In this episode of Untaming Masculinity, Dan and Brad sit down with Scott Shortmeyer, the host of The Rest and Recovery Podcast. In this wide-ranging discussion, Scott discusses what led him down the path of optimizing recovery and the many lessons he's learned along the way. He provides some guidance to men who want to start to understand how to more fully optimize their recovery, through tactical tips and strategies. Some of the many topics discussed include:The importance of not always going all out on days where you just don't have it, and why that is so critical in your ability to recover adequatelyThe role late-night snacking plays in impacting recoveryWhy you always find yourself getting up in the middle of the nightHow eliminating light in your bedroom can help you sleep betterThe importance of a nighttime routineHow you can leverage technology to help support recoveryThis episode is a great introduction to a fascinating topic and was one of our favorite conversations yet. We've all got parts of our personality or our past that we're ashamed of. We might refer to these parts of ourselves as our demons, our baggage, or our secrets; no one is immune. So, how do you want to deal with this situation? Stay coiled in shame and denial? That only makes the demons stronger. An alternative, per my guest Koshin Paley Ellison, is to approach your stuff with “healthy embarrassment.” That allows you to work more skillfully with your baggage so that it doesn't own you. And once you're cooler with yourself, that can improve your relationships with other people, which is probably the most important variable for your happiness. And healthy embarrassment is just one of many extremely useful things we are going to talk about today.Koshin Paley Ellison is an author, Zen teacher, Jungian psychotherapist, and Certified Chaplaincy Educator. He is the co-founder of the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care, an amazing place which, among other things, trains people to be volunteers in hospice centers. Koshin is the author of a new book called Untangled: Walking the Eightfold Path to Clarity, Courage, and Compassion, which centers on a classic Buddhist list called The Eightfold Path, the Buddha's recipe for enlightenment or, as Koshin puts it, “the most awesome combo platter.”In this episode we talk about:What is The Eightfold Path and how it fits into another Buddhist list, The Four Noble TruthsHow to use the list to do life betterThe danger of perfectionism in putting the list to use in your lifeHow to bridge the gap between what we say we care about and what we're actually doing with our livesHow sitting with your pain can lead to freedomThe utility and pitfalls of gossipHow we can look at the idea of “killing” in many different ways, including how one can “kill a moment” or “the energy in a room”How the concept of “right effort” can help us find the balance between not doing enough and overworking ourselvesHow being uncomfortable is a sign of real engagement with our practiceAnd Koshin's addition of the concept of “mystery” as another aspect of the eightfold pathFull Shownotes: www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/koshin-paley-ellison-528See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Edwards worked his way through school eventually achieving a BA in Business and MBA in Healthcare Administration. He served mostly individuals of lower income on 3 continents over the last 35 years and is familiar with the challenges and unfairness of life. In 2018 while working with doctors, dentists, counselors, and community health workers he had an epiphany. The core challenge most people have is to generate the personal drive to direct their own life, enduring principles to guide, and the most current science-based tools to assist them through a bumpy and messy life. Depression and suicide rates among veterans are high, and not enough veterans get the support they need to heal from their experiences and trauma. In this episode of From Survivor To Thriver, we sat down with Sgt Q to talk about his journey through his own mental health struggles as a veteran and how he used his experiences and faith to help other people struggling by shifting from reactive to proactive responses when in mental health crises. He is a firm believer in healing through service and has created an app that is changing the game for mental health emergencies.Aaron Quinonez (Sgt Q) endured a rough upbringing before becoming a proud Marine right out of high school. He was trained to fight the enemy and was prepared for war. When he volunteered for a combat tour in Iraq, little did he know his real battle would be fought in his mind. After eight years of military service, Sgt Q suffered from depression, anger, and panic attacks and was diagnosed with PTSD. He nearly ended his own life in the parking lot of a church, where later he was redeemed by Jesus Christ, who gave him a new life. Sgt Q traded the battlefield for the mission field and found healing and purpose through building homes and churches, feeding children, and supplying precious hope to struggling communities worldwide. God then called him to form QMissions, a pathway for veterans—Sgt Q's fellow warfighters—to replace the battle scars of their minds with the joy of serving. Now, Sgt Q is the award-winning author of Healing Thru Service originally aimed at struggling veterans, which also offers help for anyone in crisis and may be one's ticket to a more fulfilled life. He went from being homeless and on the brink of suicide to starting the multi-million dollar company with over 100 employees, Reliable Commercial Cleaning, founding the veteran non-profit, Q Missions, and the health-tech startup, Q Actual 2.0. In today's episode we cover: Sgt Q's experience in the militaryThe definition of service The app Sgt Q built to prevent suicide The toll war took on his mental healthWhy helping other people makes you feel betterThe different camps of people struggling with their mental healthThe importance of sharing our experiencesBecoming proactive to mental health crises instead of reactiveBuilding mental resilienceWe hope you enjoyed this episode. One of the main recommendations in conventional medicine aside from the Pill for PCOS is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and manage your caloric intake.I can hear you all laughing already because we all do this! Improving our lifestyle is one of those things we can work on ourselves to improve our symptoms. But because our symptoms can get so bad, we put SO many changes on our plates and can quite often fall into overdoing it. I can confidently say that about 99% of the people that I work with struggle with this.I think a lot of this comes down to the type of personality we have, we are just “go getter” women. We want to do everything. But when it comes to our health, that's not always the best way. This is something that I really had to work on myself — because I thought that if something wasn't working, I needed to do more of it to make it work. For example, when I was training a huge amount and running wasn't helping to control my weight, I thought I had to do more of it to lose weight (hint: that didn't help either). But when the symptoms you're getting don't make sense for the lifestyle that you are leading, that's a red flag for me to go "hold on, there's something here that the body is telling us, that it's not working optimally." If we can actually work out what that is, then we can also improve the other symptoms that you might be struggling with — like hangry attacks, severe sugar cravings, missing/irregular periods, hirsutism, acne, hair growth, hair loss and other symptoms as well.So I really want you to understand that if what you are doing now is not working, then doing more of that or doing it more like 100% is certainly going to work either. One of my patients who I met in the PCOS Protocol, Natalie, is absolutely one of these people. Not only does she have PCOS, but she also has endometriosis, which about 10% of people with PCOS also have. Because of this, she felt like there was so much that she had to do to try to get on top of her symptoms for both. But like I said, more isn't always better. So hearing it from someone else — what they're doing to try and address both PCOS and endo — can be really helpful. In this episode we talk all about how she got her periods back by addressing her root cause, working to start not overdoing it and other little parts of the health puzzle that she hadn't identified previously. This episode is for you if:You have endometriosis or think you might have endometriosisIrregular periods are one of your main symptomsYou're a Type A kind of person with a tendency to go ‘all or nothing'Trying to conceive is on your radar or you're already trying Some things we cover in this episode:Doing more isn't always betterThe connection between endometriosis and PCOSStruggling with a perfectionist mindsetHow to find balance and practical tips for an 80/20 approach to your lifestyleResources and References:10: Part 1: Why period pain is not a symptom of PCOS and all things Endometriosis with Dr. Lara Briden11: Part 2: PCOS and Endometriosis with Dr Lara Briden107: How to manage PCOS, autoimmune conditions and changing habits successfullyMy Book: Getting Pregnant with PCOSLinks to our programs:The PCOS Protocol
