GUELPH POLITICAST #469 – Whatever Happened to "Sunny Ways"? (feat. Mustafa Zuberi)

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2025 41:16

The recent federal election was the formal turning of the page from the premiership of Justin Trudeau to the one led by Mark Carney. For long-time political observers, the difference between the two men in both style and substance is stark, but there's no doubt that the change in leadership in March is at least half the reason the Liberals got a near majority last week. And yet, the question remains: What happened to Trudeau-mania? The date was February 7, 2013. The location was the Brass Taps, the pub on the second floor of the University Centre at the University of Guelph. Packing them in that day was Justin Trudeau, then a candidate for federal Liberal leadership. At this point, the Liberals were in the political wilderness, but there was a new kid on the block who had different ideas. The pundits didn't really take Justin Trudeau seriously, but the young people in the Brass Taps that day did. They really, really did. How did the excitement about Justin Trudeau and his “Sunny Ways” sour so completely that his mere removal from the ballot made the party he revived competitive again? Was it the right-wing smear job? Was it the rise of Trumpism and anti-woke sentiment? Was it the lingering social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic? It could be all three and it could be none of it, but it's one of the great questions of this political era, and this episode of the podcast. To answer it, we're joined by Mustafa Zuberi, who was, for a time, the president of the Young Liberals at the U of G and served as the Liberal candidate for Guelph in the recent provincial election. Zuberi was one of the thousands of young people drawn to politics by Trudeau and his idealism, so he will help us understand how he inspired so many young people, why that youthful energy started to move to the right in recent years, and how Trudeau might have been more of a victim of circumstance than ability. So let's talk about the rise and fall of Justin Trudeau on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can follow Mustafa Zuberi on Instagram. You can check out the coverage from Justin Trudeau's stop at the Brass Taps in 2013 on the original Guelph Politico Blogspot. And obviously, we will be keeping up with the latest developments from the new Canadian Prime Minister every Thursday at 5 pm on Open Sources Guelph on CFRU 93.3 fm or cfru.ca The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we go mega! On this super-sized edition of the show, the last one before Election Day and the episode that opens three days of advanced polling, we will profile the three candidates we haven't covered yet. From the long-time campaigner running for the governing party, to an upstart trying to rebuild a Liberal stronghold, and a new face for a new party! This Thursday, February 20, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Be Coole. You may not know Robert Coole, but he's been doing politics in Guelph for a long-time as a reliable and seasoned campaigner for local Conservatives, but now, he's in the spotlight as the PC Party candidate in this provincial election. Coole will join us to talk about why Guelph needs a voice in the next PC government, and why he's taking the spotlight after years of playing in politics behind the scenes. Mustafa: The Liberal Candidate. There are a lot of young people running for the Ontario Liberals, and Mustafa Zuberi is one of them. Pretty well established in local politics thanks to his years running the Young Liberals at the University of Guelph, Zuberi now aims to be the next MPP from this riding and part of a Bonnie Crombie government. He will tell us why the Liberals are ready to run Ontario again. If the Blue Fits... Just when it looked like there would be no emerging party candidates running in Guelph this election, we get the arrival of Carina Fraser. The author and single mother is running for New Blue, which, as the name implies, is an alternative to the PCs aiming to collect the ones turned off by Doug Ford and not willing to bank on one of the other major parties. Fraser will tells us why you shouldn't sleep on the New Blue. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

The chilling case of Negasi Zuberi has taken the media by storm, spotlighting once again the potential lapses in the justice system and the dark underbelly of domestic control and manipulation. In the latest episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, Tony Brueski and former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer delve into the harrowing details of Zuberi's crimes, his sinister writings, and the blind spots of his close family members.   Zuberi's track record is filled with allegations of sexual crimes, abuse, and manipulation. Coffindaffer expressed her disbelief, "How was he free is the question. Think of all the individuals who recently have had similar experiences, only to find their perpetrators out after a small amount of time." With evident frustration, she pointed out the nationwide failure in the justice system, particularly in light of Zuberi's writings which ominously hinted at his readiness to move on from sexual assault to murder.   Zuberi's writings are a chilling testament to his organized mind and his sinister intentions. "The writings are a blueprint for what type of victim to choose, plotting murder, and the importance of not victimizing anyone who would be missed," Coffindaffer noted. Such detailed planning went into creating a makeshift cell right under the nose of his own family. The cell was in his garage, a place seemingly hidden from even those closest to him.   One of the most haunting questions in cases like these is the complicity or knowledge of the family. Did Zuberi's wife know about the cell in their garage? Did she suspect the horrors that were taking place right in their home? Brueski's inquiries led to a series of dead-ends, leaving Coffindaffer to speculate. "We don't have any evidence of her being involved," she remarked. Drawing parallels with other cases, she continued, "It goes unnoticed right underneath their noses. Remember, these crimes are typically about control and dominance. So I believe there's no way his wife knew what he was building or was allowed to ask."   The conversation shifted to the broader implications of control and dominance. "Domestic violence cases evolve," Coffindaffer explained. "It might start out very small, and at the end of the day, you're 100% controlled." In relationships tainted by such control, seemingly odd demands, like being barred from certain areas of the home, might become the disturbing norm. Over time, such demands might escalate, leading to increasingly aggressive and abusive behavior.   The Zuberi case paints a grim picture of the potential failures in the justice system and serves as a harrowing reminder of the insidious nature of domestic control. As investigations continue, one can only hope that justice will be served and that the many victims entangled in Zuberi's web will find some measure of closure.   In the midst of such darkness, podcasts like "Hidden Killers" play an essential role in shedding light on these cases, pushing for systemic change, and ensuring that such horrors are brought to the forefront of public consciousness. The revelations from this case underscore the importance of vigilance, understanding, and action in the face of domestic abuse and manipulation. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a recent episode of the popular podcast "Hidden Killers", host Tony Brueski sat down with forensic psychologist Kate Wallinga to discuss the chilling case of Zuberi. Known for his makeshift cell in his garage where a victim had previously managed to escape, leading to the police's discovery of his hideous secret, Zuberi's criminal tendencies have sent shockwaves throughout the community and country.    Wallinga began the discussion with a comparison to another notorious criminal, David Parker Ray, also known for his sinister captivity of women. Unlike Zuberi's rather simplistic two-point plan, Ray had extensively documented his dark fantasies. Wallinga jestingly remarked, "You're trying to be a killer," highlighting Zuberi's underdeveloped plans, suggesting perhaps an impulse-driven, amateur nature in comparison to Ray.   The narrative shifted as Wallinga shed light on Zuberi's abysmal impulse control, highlighted by an instance where he drove a woman seven hours only to be overwhelmed by his urges, leading to an early assault. Her analysis further revealed the dichotomy between high-functioning individuals in society, ones who lead seemingly normal lives with family and work, and those with notorious reputations. Zuberi's notorious nature was such that many refused to speak about him without the promise of anonymity, signifying the terror he instilled in the hearts of those around him. A particularly poignant moment was Wallinga's call for the public to act on suspicions of such individuals, especially when children are involved, saying, "It's not your job to be sure, it's your job to have an investigator investigate." Zuberi's erratic behavior, paired with the community's knowledge of him being a "loose cannon", underscores the importance of vigilant citizens and a responsive legal system.   Brueski then delved into the challenges of convicting Zuberi for his heinous crimes due to the existing fear factor and the potential lack of solid evidence to keep him incarcerated for a significant time. In an alarming revelation, it emerged that some neighbors, fearing retribution from Zuberi, were already considering moving. This signifies the urgency and seriousness with which his case needs to be handled.   Adding to Zuberi's perplexing personality, the discussion also touched upon his grandiose tendencies. His appearance on the TV show, 'Judge Judy', not as a convict but as a participant, raised eyebrows. "He seems rather grandiose in many ways," observed Wallinga, pointing out his choice to build the cell himself and the pretense of being a police officer to lure his victims. This desire for attention, combined with his criminal behavior, paints a vivid picture of his twisted psyche.   A notable part of the discussion revolved around the distinction between clinical and legal insanity. Wallinga emphasized that while many may deem Zuberi's actions as "insane," it does not necessarily render him "legally insane," a term with a much narrower definition in the court of law.   The gripping conversation on "Hidden Killers" once again highlighted the imperative need for public awareness, the importance of an efficient judicial system, and the understanding of mental health in context. With criminals like Zuberi lurking in the shadows, society must be prepared and proactive in ensuring the safety of all its members. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a recent episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, host Tony Brueski delved deep into the chilling case of Negasi Zuberi with psychotherapist and author, Shavaun Scott. Drawing uncanny parallels with the Netflix series "You", the episode highlighted the disturbing patterns and audaciousness of Zuberi's actions.   The podcast began with the gripping description of a cell that Zuberi built in the basement of his rental home. Scott mentioned that upon discovery, the cell held one captive woman. However, both Brueski and Scott expressed skepticism that this was Zuberi's sole attempt at captivity. "This is clearly a very scary guy," remarked Scott, further noting that even the FBI believes there could be more victims scattered across other states.   This particular case stands out not just because of the cell, but also due to the audacity of Zuberi's actions. The suspect, living with a female partner and children, built a prison in his own home. "It shows a bizarre degree of boldness," Scott commented, suggesting that this could either be Zuberi's first attempt at holding someone captive or there may have been other instances where he held victims briefly before murdering them.   Zuberi's modus operandi was shockingly audacious. Scott described an incident where he drove six hours to Seattle, Washington, and abducted a sex worker. Convincing her that he was an undercover cop, Zuberi cuffed the woman and drove back another six hours to his home in southern Oregon to confine her in the cell. This entire scheme played out while Zuberi had a family living at the residence and neighbors in close vicinity.   Given the brazen nature of the crime and the fact that it took place in the suspect's residence, questions arose regarding the awareness of Zuberi's partner. "Most of the time with serial killers, the partner doesn't know," Scott explained. But, in light of Zuberi bringing victims to the residence – a deviation from typical serial killer patterns – Scott emphasized the importance of questioning the woman Zuberi lived with.   Discussing the mindset of partners who stay despite being aware of their significant other's criminal history, both Brueski and Scott mused about the cycle of abuse and control. "It baffles me all the time," Brueski commented. The conversation turned to the rare instances where partners not only knew but actively participated in the crimes, prompting Scott to speculate about the degree of this woman's knowledge or complicity.   Interestingly, Zuberi's bid for attention extended beyond his criminal exploits. He made an appearance on the television show "Judge Judy", a move that, according to Scott, underscores his grandiosity. "He wanted to be on TV," she stated, pointing out that Zuberi enjoyed manipulating narratives to serve his interests. People familiar with him have labeled him a con artist, with a consistent track record of deceit.   Perhaps even more alarming was Zuberi's proclivity for switching identities across states. While changing identities is not unheard of in the criminal world, Zuberi's approach was unique. He didn't necessarily reinvent himself but constantly shifted his identity as part of a broader manipulation strategy. Scott observed that Zuberi's various identities mainly served to aid his life of crime, allowing him to stay ahead of law enforcement.   The podcast episode served as a haunting reminder of the dangers that lurk in the shadows. With revelations about Zuberi's audacious modus operandi and his brazen acts of crime, listeners were left with chilling insights into the mind of a predator. As the investigation progresses, the world waits to uncover the full extent of Zuberi's heinous deeds. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a recent episode of the popular podcast "Hidden Killers," host Tony Brueski engaged with Clinical and forensic psychologist & licensed private investigator, Joni Johnston, to unpack the harrowing case of Negasi Zuberi. Zuberi, a man now infamous for the cinder block cell discovered in his garage, came under scrutiny after a woman's remarkable escape from the makeshift prison.   Johnston expressed her conviction that the escaped victim was unlikely the first person to have been imprisoned in Zuberi's cell, stating, "I would say the odds are zero." Her firmness rests on several chilling discoveries, including lists that highlighted ensuring victims won't be missed and sketches hinting at an underground captivity room. Johnston emphasized, "I really do think number one, there are going to be multiple victims."   While no murder charges have been linked to Zuberi, the podcast delved into his past, revealing a history of violent and sexually aggressive behaviors. The question that looms large is how the system allowed such a person to roam free, committing heinous acts that escalated in severity.   Discussing Zuberi's psychology, Johnston illuminated a distinctive narcissistic streak in the accused. Zuberi's appearance on a "Judge Judy" episode, his multiple aliases, and even impersonating a police officer hint at an individual who reveled in deceiving and tormenting those around him. As Johnston put it succinctly, he is "somebody who kind of gets delight in doing these devious criminal kind of things."   Tony highlighted a critical concern with wider societal implications: the likelihood of criminals getting out early for supposedly good behavior. With Zuberi's current charges not amounting to a life sentence, potential future victims may feel hesitant to come forward, fearing retaliation upon his release. Johnston hopes, however, that victims would see their testimonies as an opportunity to ensure Zuberi serves a longer sentence and remains behind bars.   The conversation then shifted to the current efforts to ensure justice. The FBI's role in the case was highlighted, with hopes that the Bureau would effectively communicate the importance of other victims stepping forward to aid in making sure Zuberi doesn't get another chance to harm others. The duo rounded off the discussion by applauding the courage of the woman who managed to escape Zuberi's clutches. Her act not only highlighted the horrors Zuberi was capable of but also paved the way to potentially saving countless others from a similar fate. As Johnston remarked, "She has really not only saved herself... but I think that she has saved a lot of people."   In the complex landscape of crime and justice, the Negasi Zuberi case serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers that lurk in the shadows. With platforms like "Hidden Killers" shedding light on such issues, one can only hope for a safer future, buoyed by informed vigilance and relentless pursuit of justice. In a riveting episode of the podcast "Hidden Killers," host Tony Brueski sits down with Robin Dreeke, a retired FBI Special Agent and Chief of the Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, to shed light on a deeply unsettling case. The story unfolds of a man audacious enough to create a makeshift cell in his garage, a setting for heinous crimes. With the dissection of the case, Dreeke helps uncover the intricacies of the offender's psyche, signaling a larger issue at play in society.   Dreeke emphasizes the profound failure of the justice system, noting that the man had been "charged and convicted multiple times of sexual assaults." Such a track record paints a concerning picture about his potential to repeat offenses. As Brueski highlighted, the criminal's method of evasion was frequently moving from one place to another, a common trait of serial rapists. A striking pattern observed is their inability to sustain an income, prompting them to form relationships primarily for financial gain.   The offender's focus on targeting sex workers isn't unique. Dreeke highlights the tragic reality that many sex workers are victims of trafficking, often being groomed and trafficked as teenagers. His statistic is harrowing: "68% of the sex workers that are trafficked have been raped."   While the extent of the damage this particular criminal has inflicted is yet unknown, Dreeke theorizes that there could be "victims in the hundreds." What brought the man's operations to light was the heroics of a single, tenacious victim who managed to escape. Dreeke notes the man's lack of finesse and planning in constructing his cell, suggesting he was "not that bright of a guy," relying heavily on "force, coercion, and fear as a lever of manipulation."   Intriguingly, there's a blatant grandiosity in the man's actions. Brueski points to his appearance on the TV show "Judge Judy," an appearance the man willingly made. Such a public display, according to Dreeke, showcases a "major flaunting of control over others." This behavior, combined with his extreme methods, such as masquerading as an undercover officer, indicates a high degree of manipulation and grandiosity, typical signs of psychopathy.   Dreeke draws a chilling distinction between serial rapists and serial killers. Though serial killers may have fewer victims due to the death toll, serial rapists cast a long shadow of trauma, potentially affecting hundreds. The PTSD and trauma induced by a serial rapist ripple outward, affecting a wider audience.   Despite the gravity of his crimes, this man operated in plain sight in a typical neighborhood. Brueski remarks on the man's numerous violations of Homeowners' Association (HOA) rules, but no one suspects the extent of his operations. This revelation raises alarming questions about community safety and the hidden threats that could be lurking next door.   Dreeke concludes with a note on the offender's age, stating that the late twenties is when "serial killers and rapists really start coming into their own." His early prolific record only foretells the dangers he could have continued to pose. As Dreeke succinctly put it, such individuals are "massive manipulators using fear and shame to keep people from taking action against them."   This discussion uncovers the disturbing psychology of a criminal and underscores the need for vigilance and reformation in the justice system. In a recent podcast episode, "Hidden Killers," hosted by Tony Brueski, a deeply disturbing case was dissected with the insight of former Felony Prosecutor and attorney, Eric Faddis. Their conversation revolved around the chilling case of an alleged kidnapper, Negasi Zuberi, and the subsequent discovery of a cell within his garage from which a woman managed to escape.   At the outset, Brueski posed a crucial question: given the evidence found at the scene, does Zuberi even stand a chance at defending himself in court? The optics of the situation were grim, with a makeshift cell found in the accused's garage. Faddis weighed in, stating, “It seems terribly problematic for Nagai.” While speculation abounds about potential defenses, such as consent or a consensual romantic encounter gone awry, Faddis remained skeptical. He noted, "It's his house. The torture den is in his house. Is it consent? I just don't know at this point."   The discussion inevitably ventured into the territory of prior allegations and charges against Zuberi. The alleged history included a series of restraining orders, accusations of sexual abuse, and even changing aliases while relocating between states. Brueski questioned how an attorney might approach representing a client with such a history. Faddis candidly explained that, in his experience, there are always two sides to a story. “There truly are,” he emphasized, adding, “It doesn't mean that both sides are 100% truthful and accurate and valid, but there's a different perspective.” The role of the attorney, in this case, would be to uncover Zuberi's perspective and see how it aligns with potential defenses or any mitigating factors.   Addressing the potential introduction of Zuberi's past allegations and charges during the trial, Faddis stated, "Especially in the sexual assault context, when you have a modus operandi... the jury oftentimes gets to hear about that thread." If there's a consistent method of operation in his past crimes and the present case, the prosecution is likely to bring it to light.   Interestingly, the conversation took a brief detour into the role of homeowners associations (HOAs). The Prairie Park Commons Homeowners Association, of which Zuberi was a member, had previously flagged him for multiple rule violations, including parking an RV in the driveway and keeping pit bulls without notifying the landlord. While these violations don't have a direct link to the case at hand, they do provide a backdrop to Zuberi's strained relationship with his community. Faddis remained skeptical about whether increased HOA powers could have prevented the alleged crime, emphasizing the magnitude of the allegations against Zuberi: “Sometimes those folks can't be stopped by some neighborhood regulation.”   When asked about any potential precedents in similar cases, Faddis drew a parallel with the R. Kelly cases, where the musician was alleged to have kept people against their will in his home. Some claimed consent, but the defense failed to hold in court. He stated, “In terms of slithering out of this one, charges-wise, I'm just not seeing it.” Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a recent, chilling discovery, Negasi Zuberi, 29, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the harrowing kidnapping of a woman he confined in a makeshift cinder block cell within his Oregon home's garage. This terrifying incident highlights Zuberi's extensive history of alleged violent acts and misdemeanors, spreading across multiple states and affecting countless lives.   Oregon Incident: The Terrifying Escape According to authorities, Zuberi lured the woman into captivity after posing as an undercover police officer in Seattle. He then drove her hundreds of miles away to Klamath Falls, Oregon, where he locked her up in what the FBI's Portland Field Office described as a "makeshift" concrete cell.   In a testament to her willpower and determination to survive, the woman managed to escape, albeit with bloodied hands, after beating down the cell door. Stephanie Shark, the assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Portland field office, stated, "According to the complaint, this woman was kidnapped, chained, sexually assaulted, and locked in a cinderblock cell. Her quick thinking and will to survive may have saved other women from a similar nightmare.”   Zuberi's Alarming Past Delving into Zuberi's past, we uncover a series of alarming incidents that paint a portrait of a man with a penchant for violence and manipulation. In July 2020, Alycia Westfall, Zuberi's wife, detailed in a request for a protective order his alleged violent actions towards her and their two children. Westfall stated, "He screams at the kids and me, threatens me verbally, financially and mentally abusive to all of us.” She also shared that Zuberi took control of her finances, took her phone, and even escalated violence when she attempted to involve the police.   However, the protective order was temporarily granted, requiring Zuberi to maintain a 100-yard distance from Westfall and their children. Despite the evidence, the order was mysteriously dismissed in September 2020, with no recorded reasoning.   Moreover, before his Oregon arrest, Zuberi's reputation was far from clean. He's been associated with previous assault accusations, eviction proceedings, and has lived in numerous states since 2016, making his track record complex and concerning. Court records have uncovered multiple complaints against him, hinting at a pattern of abusive behavior.   In California, Zuberi, who went under multiple aliases including Justin Kouassi, Justin Joshua Hyche, and Sakima Zuberi, faced a restraining order filed by a woman accusing him of domestic violence. As reported by NBC News, the woman claimed he had threatened and physically abused her and her children.   Records from Colorado paint a similar picture. Under the name Justin Kouassi, he was reportedly accused of physical assault, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant.   Abishek Kandar, a previous landlord from Vancouver, Washington, described his problematic tenancy. Zuberi had allegedly defaulted on rent for half a year, engaged in illegal subletting, and had even purportedly threatened neighbors. Reflecting on his experiences with Zuberi, Kandar didn't mince his words: “He is a horrible person. He deserves to be in jail.”   The Web of Deception Zuberi's intricate web of deception extends further than his aliases. Investigators suspect that he utilized various tactics to control his victims, including pretending to be a law enforcement officer, drugging their drinks, or seeking out sex workers only to assault them. Disturbingly, some assaults might have been filmed under the guise of consensual activities.   Evidence gathered from Zuberi's Klamath Falls residence indicated meticulous planning on his part. A note titled "Operation Take Over" included instructions such as "Leave phone at home" and guidelines for selecting potential victims. Moreover, sketches of what seemed to be an underground structure with details like "foam insulation" and "waterproof concrete" further hinted at his sinister intentions.   Given the breadth of his alleged offenses, authorities are urging any potential victims across the states he has resided – which include California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Alabama, and Nevada – to step forward. Zuberi's case underscores the importance of vigilance, both in personal safety and in ensuring that justice is relentlessly pursued. The brave woman who managed to escape his grasp not only saved herself but potentially prevented future atrocities. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Each of us are on our own unique life journey and for some of us we have yet to find the one to start a family with, so what do we do when  society is constantly reminding  us of our ticking biological clock and how do we approach the conversation of having kids when we are truly ready? For the past year, I have been a bit anxious when I think about my future and having children of my own inshallah. This anxiety stemmed from realizing that marriage may not be written for me at this very moment and my age is definitely not waiting on me to find the one. Like most, this is a very intimate conversation that I have been having within my circle of close girlfriends. Unfortunately, for some of us, we didn't learn much about fertility in our early 20s and fast forward to today, we are in our 30s and unsure of what next steps to take when it comes to the topic of having kids and what options we have in preserving our fertility. We are all asking ourselves the question: should I be worried about my biological clock?Thankfully, there have been notable technological advances when it comes to reproductive health care but what does that mean for us?In today's episode, I sit down with Koko Zuberi, she holds an impressive background in working with UN Women in the Partnerships and Outreach sector and someone who is graciously choosing to share her own personal experience with the egg freezing process. In this conversation, we share our thoughts on the pressures women face to start a family, how we truly feel being in our 30s and being unmarried, and what motivated Koko to make the decision of freezing her eggs?We stress the importance of paying our doctors a visit to get checked, regardless if we are ready to have kids or not and how does one have this super serious conversation with our potential partners - especially when they may be oblivious to our biological clock. And of course we can't forget our parents and what this means for them as well.Having conversations like this is vital, while some of us may have a strong support group, there are many others out there who may not have someone to turn to when discussing topics such as fertility - and so I hope this discussion sheds light on this, quote on quote, taboo topic.I also want to stress the fact that Koko and I are not medical professionals, nor are we scholars. Please consult with your trusted doctors and Islamic advisors if you are seriously thinking about egg freezing. Enjoy and follow the pod on Instagram:@unsweetenedandunfilteredFollow Koko Zuberi on Instagram:@heyitsmekoko
