Send us a Text Message.Welcome to the latest epsode of our pod. On this episode we chat to pone very determined lady.I first met Nic when we were over at the European Multisport Champs in Portugal, she had travelled over with former guest Robert Myler, who suggested Nic should come on and share her story. Nic says " Im a full-time working mum with 2 young children. Sport is my hobby and I love it. I have run from a small age, my first run I remember was a 1.5 mile road race when I was about 12 and then the school cross country races on the sand dunes in Irvine with the wind battering me. That didn't put me off and I did my first half marathon at 17 and the London Marathon at 21. My main achievements to date are completing the triple crown in 2022 – the Highland Fling, West Highland Way ultra and Devil O' the Highlands races, completing Celtman solo extreme triathlon and representing GBR in the European Duathlon Championships. I run because I enjoy it. It's an escape from the real world and I get thinking space. I love the outdoors and this gives me a chance to see some amazing scenery. I always run on holiday (at the request of the family) as I find all the great places we can go adventuring to later. I'm also quite competitive and enjoy the races…the muddier the better! I'm a role model to my children and others showing that us girls / mums can do these things and inspire the next generation. My best and worst run moments: My children being at the end of my ultra races and running with me to cross the finish line, they are my inspiration and love seeing their faces as I near the end. Worst was when I had an undetected stress fracture in my foot which eventually broke, 3 operations over 3 years until it healed and was told at one point I'd never run again. In my spare time I coach, I was a tennis coach for 20 years until injury struck but I have now retrained and qualified as a personal trainer, running and triathlon coach with Glasgow Triathlon Club. I have been leading trail runs for many years."You can follow Nic on Instagram @epicrunningtrails_nicand her website is https://epictrailsrunning.co.ukYou Can Follow us onInstagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteor our YouTube Channel AMP GBWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

We welcome Nic Dawson to the podcast this week, and we cover way more than we had originally planned! From running up and down the sand dunes of Irvine (check em out if you've not heard of them before), to the giddy heights of representing GB at the European Duathlon Championships in Bilbao. We chat with Nic about injuries (multiple) and the recovery journey involved to other sports, distances and disciplines. Inspirational isn't a word close enough to describe how Nic has rediscovered and reinvented herself, in her own words...'Why Not'? Nic also finds time in her busy life to run Epic Trails, based in Milngavie (you just know what happens next right?) From the Fling, to the WHW, to the Devil, oh that's the Triple Crown isn't it! Then throw in the Celtman, swimming wi jellyfish...you starting to get the picture? As you'd expect by now. we spend some time on the topic of scran, what works, what doesn't, this weeks wee food teaser...runny porridge! Never one to stop developing and enhancing her skills, Nic is currently undertaking a qualification be a licenced running coach, so keep an eye out to get involved if you'd like to work with Nic and get an up close insight into some of the dedication, devotion and pursuit of joy that can be derived from fitness and from running. Epic Trails Instagram Profile Epic Trails on Facebook Pre the chat with Nic we chew over a few things including 'supershoes', autumn marathon majors, the Jedburgh 3 Peaks competition, oh...and Race Or Not is back baby! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/youngheartsrunfree/message
I talk to Natalie Hawkrigg about a number of Swim - Run challenges she has completed. Based in the North Lakes, Natalie is the female record holder for the Frog Graham Round, a 40 mile run with four lake swims around the Lake District. She was also the first female to complete the Frog Graham in winter, and went on to do the Welsh Puddle Buckley challenge as well. In May 2023, Natalie became the second ever finisher of The Ring of Stirling, a 35 mile round starting and finishing in Shieldaig, Torridon, which includes 5 swims (one of which is tidal), 10 summits and traverses some remote and beautiful corners of Torridon. The round was conceived by Chris Waters as a tribute to his late friend Chris Stirling who loved the hills of Torridon and has won the Celtman triathlon previously. For her Stirling Round, Natalie had one failed attempt which finished at the frigid waters of Loch Coire Mhic Fhearchair (Beinn Eighe) but then returned the very next weekend to complete her round in 26 hours and 28 minutes. She talks through the process and gives her insights into this fascinating merger of hill running and open water swimming. In the introduction I mention the "It's Up to Us" campaign, a joint venture from Mountaineering Scotland and the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland which launched earlier this year and aims to raise awareness of the need for investment in the repair and maintenance of Scottish upland paths. Go to www.savemountainpaths.scot for more info and to donate. For details of the Ring of Stirling go to: https://ringofstirling.wordpress.com/ And the Frog Graham info is at: https://www.froggrahamround.co.uk/ FrogMan (Full Bob Graham run plus swims): https://thefrogmanround.square.site/ Futher info/ corrections: 1. Lancaster bomber crash on Beinn Eighe 1951 - further info here: https://heavywhalley.wordpress.com/2021/03/13/38412/ (my grandfather John Hinde was not involved in this RAF mountain rescue search, I got the stories muddled) 2. Biodiversity precautions on the Frog Graham Round: In recent years, the threat posed by Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) has increased hugely and sadly, Bassenthwaite and Derwentwater have been compromised for some time, completely upsetting the lakes' delicate ecology and causing significant problems for lake users. Crummock Water has also succumbed and is now infected with NZ pygmyweed. Only Buttermere remains untouched and the park authorities and WCRT are making strenuous efforts to ensure it remains that way. The Frog Graham Round Club is committed to supporting their initiatives. Please read the details on the biosecurity section of the Frog Graham website before attempting the round. https://www.froggrahamround.co.uk/biosecurity 3. Natalie realised she got a fact wrong at the end of the chat: "I said that Chris Waters had not completed the Ring Of Stirling - that is not true. He has completed it in time of 22hrs 42, it was the Puddle Buckley he has not completed - he devised the Puddle and recced it but never did the final version." 4. Finlay says Ring of Steall when he means Ring of Stirling, near the end
After coming up short in a Celtman triathlon, Dubliner Willie Murphy felt he was pretty much done with the sport - but then his name was pulled out of the hat as one of only 260 racers at the 2023 Norseman - the world's most extreme triathlon - and he had to think again. But there was a a problem. Willie had lost all his motivation and hadn't trained in ages, so how on earth could he get from being on his couch to the finish line of the Norseman - a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a marathon that finishes at the top of a mountain - in just eight months? Hear his amazing story on this week's Global Gael.
Myself and Drew thought it would be great idea to recap the vlog, but from a perspective that maybe wasn't captured, the man himself that produced the bloody video.
These are my top 3 lessons from completing The Celtman Extreme Scottish Triathlon.

This week, Dave Clements joins us to tell us the amazing story of completing both Celtman and the Beyond the Ultimate Namibia 5 day Ultramarathon. Impressive enough, until you discover that Dave's training is disrupted by spending 4 weeks at a time living in a tiny pressurised container under water, while he works as a commercial deep sea diver ! There is no athlete that comes to Norseman without already having a long journey of training and hard work behind them. When the media team sat down with 26-year-old Scottish athlete Eidilh Prise ahead of the 2022 race though, we knew we had found someone special. Instead of following a training plan she goes on ‘adventures'… Instead of a coach driving her, it's her pure love of the mountains that spurs her on. Instead of putting on a steely race face, she draws energy from cheering and laughing along with her supporters. Of course, on race day, we saw just how magical this approach could be – but for now, it was our opportunity to chat how it felt to be a double-record-holder at Celtman – and just how excited she was about facing the mighty mountains here in Norway.

Fergus and Jonny discuss Fergus's experience with the CELTMAN in 2021, and Jonny's in 2016, alongside exploring all the considerations going into 2022's race. This was recorded long before race day, so it's interesting to look back on our predictions now knowing the outcome.Expect to understand the demands of the race, the challenges we have both faced with it, and how we set out to approach 2022 ahead of time!www.omnia-performance.com | @omniaperformanceFergus: @ferguscrawleyJonathan: @jonathanpain

In summer 2021, Christina MacKenzie broke the Women's Record for cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats. She completed the 839 miles in 51 hours, 5 minutes and 27 seconds. In 2022, she claimed a new women's cycling record for Scotland's famous North Coast 500 (NC500.) But Christina hasn't always been an endurance cyclist. She did her first 10km in 2010, which led her into triathlon and Ironman (and Celtman!) and ultra endurance cycling. You'll hear: 07:10 We talk about Christina's LEJOG record breaking attempt - she came past Helen and husband Rich when they were on Day 5 of their LEJOG ride in 2021 and Christina was 35 hours into her 51 hour record breaking ride. 10:55 Christina talks about how she was feeling after 35 hours on the bike 'after 20 hours I wouldn't be able to make my own decisions and that's when the team come in. I was nervous about what my body might do, but I was also excited because I felt really good. 12:40 Where did the idea come from to try to break the LEJOG women's record. " I remember looking at https://www.cyclist.co.uk/news/4934/check-the-strava-file-of-the-new-lands-end-to-john-ogroats-record (Mike Broadwith's strava) and thinking 'that's just crazy.' But after my second 24 hour TT I thought 'what would the next thing be?' It was in my head, but a little vino brought it out of my head and then I said it out loud and then there's no going back." 16:55: The important thing to remember is that I am just a club cyclist and once I thought it might be a possibility, it was about getting a coach and a support team. It's a huge team effort. I used to joke that I have the easy job of pedalling, but there's a huge amount of logistics and cost behind it. Even a few months afterwards, I look at the strava file and I think 'how did I manage that?' 20:10 I think the training I did for it was spot on, including 3 back to back 200 mile days and I was feeling tired, fatigued and grumpy but physically and mentally it got me ready. Sometimes I just wanted to fling my bike in Loch Tay and get the train back. But I figure it's like doing your homework. 22:00 Hand up's, nutrition - i'd get my bottle and it would either be a wrap, a flapjack or a gel. But there were times when I was fuelled by Millionaire's shortbread. It is the best! It would put a smile on my face every time. 25:10 Christina explains how you have to verify the World Record attempt with Guinness. ' We did it in July, but it wasn't until Christmas that it was ratified. They had observers throughout the UK, with a clip board. 28:00 On the lack of sleep 'I got a wee 'toot' from the support van behind me and what that happened I would take a gel or a cold coffee drink. 29:10 The difference in what's going through your mind when you're doing a LEJOG attempt compared to when you're doing an Ironman. I would treat myself and mentally bribing myself to get myself through, like 'get this done and then you can get your nails done.' 31:10 the speed Christina had to maintain 'I had to average 13.9 mph, but the clock doesn't stop. 33:40 How Christina trained for LEJOG. It was really difficult to fit everything in, and I have had to put things on hold to be able to do it. At the peak I was probably doing about 25 hours. It was hard over winter and at times it was so difficult and you question your own sanity and if it's worth it. But when you break the record it is worth did. 37:10 We talk about how to keep vaguely comfortable on a 50 hour +ride. 39:10 How do you go from LEJOG to wanting to have a crack at the North Coast 500? "It was quite logistically difficult." But if you're in a car on a nice day, it's one of the most beautiful places in the world. If you're on a bike, in a headwind, it's the worst place in the world!" "There were a lot of mental battles and I had to tell myself a lot of things. And I knew I couldn't stop because it was a bit horrible and it wasn't nice. I knew I just had to endure the 30 hours...

This week we got to speak to Mark Brown who is aiming to race the Celtman (and extreme Triathlon with a swim in a frigid loch, a devilishly hilly ride and a run up a mountain (or Ben or whatever they're called!). The reasons behind wanting to do this and how it helps his training and racing mindset. We also touched on technology and some of the new ideas coming out. Do we have to beware of jump in with reckless abandon?!

Triathlon lessons from Ian1. Know your race, get prepared, read race reports, study manual, double-check your equipment 2. Have at least 2 race strategies, when everything goes well one and other, less optimistic 3. Spend time on your own, get comfortable with being uncomfortable
Celtman - Extreme Scottish Triathlon. Extreme, long, crazy, epic. Called as you want, it will still kick your ass. It's been almost two months since I've finished the race and I still don't know what to think. Did I enjoy it? Will I do it again? Why do I like to push my body harder and longer? To help me answers those questions, I am meeting with fellow Celtman competitors. We talk about the race, the commitment, the family, the training and afterlife. As my first guest, Richard, three times Celtman, said, those chats are like my private after Celtman therapy. Yes, there is something in it. So if you are thinking about signing up for the Celtman, or if you are just interested in long endurance racing and it impacts on the human body and mind, you will love those chats!https://strengthfortriathlon.com/

Episode 25 The Circle is Complete. Well its all happened since the last poddy. Cape Wrath Marathon, Etap Loch Ness, Cycle the Straths Sportif and the main event of the evening, the 2019 Celtman. This is what I started the podcast for, which was to catalogue my training and journey getting to it. Only this has taken 2 and a 1/2 years to get here, including a substitute Ironman and a Celtman withdrawal to get there. But get there we did. This one covers the event and the lead to it, including Louise aka Cull coordinator aka Rich Moderator and Sanders the support runners perspective on how it went. Today I have Amanda back on the podcast to talk is through the training and day of Celtman which is more distance than an ironman in cold jellyfish infested waters and running up mountains ! Also a couple of months after that she completed Ironman Wales and got a PB. Amazing dedication, commitment and mental strength from someone who was told she wasn't going to be able to do these things due to injury when she was younger. If you haven't already I would say go back and listen to part 1 first to listen to Amanda's background and road to Ironman

Today I talk to Amanda McCaig who is an Ironman Triathlon finisher! Ironman triathlon is a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and then a full marathon. With me training at the moment to do a half ironman this summer then a full ironman next year I couldn't wait to speak to Amanda. When I originally asked Amanda to do the podcast I wasn't aware of her background or story. I was already inspired by her achievments but when we done the pod and she opened up I was absolutely amazed! An incredible story. Amanda had hip problems when she was younger and got told she wouldn't be able to do any sports never mind an Ironman Triathlon, had to overcome a number of bad injuries and also opens up about an eating disorder she has worked at to overcome. She also isn't stopping at Ironman, Amanda is doing Celtman which she explains on the pod, insane! An epic story and a great conversation. Thanks so much to Amanda for coming on and doing the pod, enjoy folks! Episode 12 - Christmas Kudos. We're both back on it, sort of. Mostly. Starting to get back into the groove as a lassie from the states once said. Few trail runs under our belts and the opportunity to train a bit more. We've had a couple of requests too, nutrition for Triathlons is the first and Celtman training plans is the second. A new bike and plans for Louise is signing up for her first marathon.... So thanks for downloading and please send us your feedback.
