Dismantling the Greenwashing in Animal Agriculture": In this insightful segment, Hope Bohanec discusses the pitfalls of greenwashing within the animal agriculture sector. Highlighting the deceptive marketing strategies, she illustrates how labels such as "local" and "organic" are often misconstrued to seem more environmentally friendly than they truly are. Hope emphasizes the significant positive impact of choosing a vegan lifestyle, not just on the individual's carbon footprint but for the greater good of the planet. #Greenwashing #SustainableLiving #VeganImpact

Many folks come to veganism later in life, but there are a select few who start slightly earlier. Kingston Zoom Walters, also known as King Zoom the Vegan Kid, has been vegan since birth. Kingston is an 18-year-old vegan, neurodivergent, feminist social justice activist and environmentalist. His early passion for speaking up against injustices towards animals, humans and the planet evolved into speaking at many events across North America. Kingston joins me to discuss what he's learned as a child activist, self-care for vegan animal activists, and his brand new book.
Originally from Catalonia, but a UK resident, Jordi is a vegan Zoologist specialising in animal behaviour who has been involved in animal protection for many years. In addition, he has worked as an undercover investigator, animal welfare consultant, and animal protection campaigner. Under the pen name J.C. Costa, he published a novel titled “The Demon's Trial”, in which he explores dilemmas animal protectionists face. He has been an ethical vegan since 2001, and in 2020 became well-known for securing the legal protection of ethical vegans in Great Britain from discrimination in a landmark employment tribunal case discussed all over the world. You've probably heard of the Effective Altruism (AE) movement before, and the effort to apply effective altruism to animal advocacy work and reducing suffering of animals. But do you know what it actually is? And is effective altruism all it's really cracked up to be?? I have seen countless debates within the animal advocacy movement about what the "best" type of activism is, with many people pushing everyone to do one single thing. In the last few years things like animal welfare legislation (focused on bigger cages, and "humane slaughter") and reducitarianism have been pushed on the movement by several well-known AE philanthropists and non profits as the end-all-be-all of evidence based "effective activism". But can we even measure the effects of our vegan and animal rights activism in the first place? How do we know what will really end speciesism, save animals, and turn the world vegan in the future? And what role should science and data actually play in social justice movements and especially animal rights work? I discuss all that and more in this episode with Casey Taft who wrote the brilliant book 'Motivational Methods for Vegan Advocacy: A Clinical Psychology Perspective'. Casey Taft is the co-founder and manager of Vegan Publishers and is a Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. He is an internationally recognized researcher in the areas of trauma and the family, winning prestigious awards for his work from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He has published over 100 journal articles, book chapters, and scientific reports, and has consulted with the United Nations on preventing violence and abuse globally. He sees the prevention of violence towards animals as a natural extension of this work.

This episode is brought to you by Vivo Life! Use our code 'chickpeeps10' to get 10% off your order at vivolife.com! For many vegans, animal welfare activism can feel problematic. Why advocate for better farming practices when you'd rather not endorse animal farming at all? Isn't it betraying the animals to be demanding anything less than their total freedom? And can animal welfare organisations really be working towards a vegan world whilst they are working alongside the companies killing animals for profit? This week co-hosts, Tylor and Evy discuss the complicated role of animal welfare in vegan activism and speak to expert animal welfare campaigner and hardcore vegan activist, Sean Gifford, of Compassion in World Farming to gain some valuable insights on how to straddle both the vegan and welfare approach to helping animals. Also on this episode… How a small gesture by a chipmunk inspired Sean's vegan awakening. Sean discusses his multiple arrests for the animal rights cause and why nowadays he tries to avoid brushes with the law. How a vegan deals with having to use welfare language like ‘humane meat'. Why must abolitionists be so rude online?!, Evy asks and Tylor explains. ‘Anyone in the animal protection movement, I think we should all just focus on what we share which is that unyielding belief that animals can feel pain and lead emotional lives from a chick to a pig, to a cow to even fish, the forgotten factory farmed animal.' The most pervasive vegan stereotype is that you cannot build muscle and strength on a vegan diet. That's why vegan bodybuilding activism is our own favorite form of vegan advocacy. It's also why we care so much about helping vegans to build muscle and get into the best shape of their lives. To date, we've helped hundreds of vegan-curious people make the transition to a compassionate fit lifestyle. And we're just getting started! We firmly believe that the more fit vegans there are, the more people that will get interested in veganism. And it all started 3 years ago when I found VeganBodybuilding.com, which is run by a vegan bodybuilder and vegan activist named Robert Cheeke. This site helped me to realize that my bodybuilding aspirations as a vegan were not crazy like everyone else had been telling me.Well, things have come full circle! This past Saturday (4/28/2018), we had the pleasure of attending the 2018 FitExpo in Philadelphia where we met some of our favorite vegan bodybuilding and fitness influencers, including Robert Cheeke! In this podcast episode, we'll discuss our experience at the 2018 Philadelphia FitExpo and the AMAZING ripple effect that vegan bodybuilders have made for the vegan movement.Go Follow Our Amazing Vegan Bodybuilder Friends:Robert Cheeke: Champion vegan bodybuilder and founder of Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness. We visited the headquarters of PETA USA to meet it's founder and tour de force, Ingrid Newkirk. We spoke about euthanasia, Sea World, veganism, the history of PETA and more. Since it was founded, PETA has exposed horrific animal abuse in laboratories, leading to many firsts, including canceled funding, closed facilities, seizure of animals, and charges filed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PETA has also closed the largest horse-killing operation in North America, convinced dozens of major designers and hundreds of companies to stop using fur, ended all car-crash tests on animals, cleaned up wretched animal pounds, helped schools switch to alternatives to dissection, and provided millions of people with information on vegetarianism, companion animal care, and countless other issues. PETA's style of activism is often challenged, but there is no doubt PETA has led the way for real changes in animal rights. As minimalists, we've been cutting down our possessions for the last 10 years. We’ve let go of so many things…. we even sold our wedding rings! Today we discuss the material possessions that we each found more challenging to let go of, and Luca reveals that he was once a hoarder! At 17 years old, James Aspey was diagnosed with leukemia and was given only 6 weeks to live. He beat the cancer, lived a life of hard partying, drugs, and developed an eating disorder. Many years later, his life changed on a cruise ship - of all places! Fast forward to today and James has replaced drugs, cancer, and bulimia with surfing, vegan activism, and meditation. In 2014, James took a 365 day vow of silence to raise awareness for animals… and since breaking that vow on mainstream television, he has not stopped talking and educating people about animal liberation and peace. As an animal rights activist, James has taken part in a multitude of different forms of activism, including giving hundreds of talks around the world, with his most popular speech having 12 million views on social media! It was a pleasure to catch up with and learn from today’s special guest, James Aspey. References * This podcast episode was sponsored by Mes Amies Soaps. We live a fairly transient life and our recent move made us reassess all the stuff we own. Whilst preparing for our move, we were knee-deep in boxes and felt like minimalist failures! What and why are we still holding onto stuff?? To give you a better visual of what we recently traveled with, here’s a picture of all our stuff. In this podcast episode, we forgot to mention the fan box … which we also squeezed a wok into! Oh, and the two big backpacks also contain our towels and bedding. We’re thinking of recording another episode about Minimalism - talking more about what it means to us and some of the more difficult items we’ve let go of over the years. If you’d like to hear those stories and more on this topic, let us know in the comments below these notes. And please leave us any questions you might have too. This week we're talking to Steven Dawson, LCSW, about burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma within vegan activism and veganism in general. We managed to touch on additional related topics, including how to deal with the guilt of feeling like you're not doing enough and how to build a better vegan movement through trauma-informed community building. In our annual collaborative episode with The Bearded Vegans, we discuss vegan activism in a post-Trump era: with all the bullshit going on, is it appropriate to still advocate for animals? We also discuss "identity politics" as something that is being portrayed negatively in the media. Listen HEREThis week I talk about my personal experiences trying to work and earn a living as a vegan in a non-vegan world. I also talk about an interesting reaction I had (the way I reacted not the other people) upon being given my very first opportunity ever to address a group of relative strangers about veganism. I also talk about Colleen Patrick-Goudreau with whom many people are already very familiar. So far I have not done any more than go to the iTunes Store and read a few of the 255 reviews, and listen to a couple of minutes of a show, all of which I just did now actually (although I am now of course a subscriber and will be listening to every single episode!). Even without listening any further and just by reading the reviews I know that this is someone I can learn from. I can't wait to hear all the podcasts. I have put a link in the link section to her podcast Food for Thought:http://www.compassionatecooks.com/podcast.htmand I also recommend going to the iTunes Store and reading some of the reviews. This is further proof of the effectiveness of peaceful vegan activism. I am grateful to those people who informed me about Colleen's podcast, it is very inspiring, re-affirming and empowering to see such effective vegan activism. I haven't had a real chance to listen yet - I am going off of what I have been told, and the incredible comments left by people about the podcast on the iTunes Store. I look forward to learning from and being inspired by such effective vegan activism.
