In today's episode I'm speaking with Maria Correa, the VP of Marketing & Editorial at WaterBear, a community platform where entertainment meets impact. You might remember WaterBear from one of the very first episodes of season one with Poppy Mason-Watts – it's an amazing streaming platform with lots of really cool environmental and social documentaries, all accessible for free.Today I wanted to speak with Maria about what I think is an increasingly important topic - imperfect activism. I know lots of you care about the environment and are doing your best to live in an ethical and respectful way. I do too, and yet. I'll be the first to admit that as much as I care about the environment sometimes I do still fly, sometimes I forget my reusable water bottle and need to buy a plastic one, sometimes I buy things from companies that are not very ethical. I don't think that means I don't care. I don't think this should stop me from speaking up about the issues I care about. As the saying goes, we don't need 100 perfect environmentalists, we need millions of people doing it imperfectly. I wanted to record this episode because I feel like a lot of us are feeling that way and I don't think we should let the pressure of being perfect prevent us from standing up for what we believe in. Maria has done a lot of research around this, and the idea of brining together a community of imperfect activists is at the heart of WaterBear. So we spoke about what it means, but also the negative stereotypes that tend to be associated with activism, and the importance of approaching environmental action through the things you love, so that it can bring you joy. Maria also shared her tips on how to handle challenging conversations around these often very emotionally charged topics. I really hope this episode will be helpful!Want to dive deeper?Check out WaterBear — https://www.waterbear.com/This month's Collective Mission: Fashion — https://www.waterbear.com/missions/fashionJoin the community and support the podcast on Patreon (thank you so much

Emma talks about the impact of the wildfires on wildlife, while Robi shares some good news for Chinook salmon. Jocelyn has filmed programming for PBS NATURE, Mongabay, National Geographic, the BBC, Waterbear, ILCP, Health in Harmony, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, Future Alam Borneo and Borneo Futures, among others. She is most at home filming endangered species in some of the world's most remote wilderness locations. Her technical skills in long lens shooting, gimbal work and drone operation to capture unique natural history sequences have led to award-winning conservation films. Jocelyn was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, the eldest of three; she has two brothers. Her father Robert Stokes is in media marketing and her mother Debra a medical assistant and artist. Growing up in the desert, Jocelyn spent her childhood outdoors exploring nature and wildlife. Sam discusses how storytelling builds community and the importance films play in creating a network around a cause, not just educating and informing. Sam also talks about the time sensitivity of gallivanting social impact after a film is watched beyond just an immediate response. Jayda and Sam also talk about how seeing the tangible impact of your actions is crucial to motivating people to get involved, as well as coming up with more interesting and creative call to actions. Sam also talks about finding joy and lightness in activism and not just sacrifice, and how for Sam, building a social component to WaterBear and their campaigns is crucial to achieve this. Sam also shares with Jayda the tough sides of building a company, and the personal impact pushing yourself for something you are so passionate about, can have on your mental health, and the personal changes to lifestyle and self care he's made, which in turn has supported him making WaterBear even more successful. Kaya Herstad-Carney returns to the podcast but this time she's brought her Mary Poppins bag of tricks. Join Alexa and Kaya as they discuss the gadgets and props you can use as a singing teacher, the benefits they have to the student's voice and learning, and how best to utilise them in your singing lessons. KEY TAKEAWAYS Using props in singing training provides a kinesthetic experience, prompting students to consider technique and form habits that feel innate. Physical engagement aids memory recall, reinforcing learning through tactile stimuli. This approach enhances understanding and skill development in vocal performance, it's also more fun. Balls aid singing teaching by enhancing breath control and support through exercises like tossing or squeezing. They engage students physically and mentally, adding a playful distraction that fosters focus and skill development. Straw warm-ups, blowing air through a straw into water or the air, enhance singing by focusing airflow and promoting proper breath support. They gently prepare the voice, reducing strain, improving resonance, and enhancing vocal control for better performance. Ask the singing student how using props like a TheraBand feels: does it improve, worsen, or maintain their vocal control and support? Assessing their experience helps tailor exercises for optimal vocal development. BEST MOMENTS "Because of its expandable nature, I like to use this with singers who feel constriction in the throat” “I love my singing straw” “The important thing is that you know the research and why” EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: kayamusic.com Social Media: Handle: @kayamusic Relevant Links & Mentions: Vocology in Practice: https://www.vocologyinpractice.org/ (Youtube) Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@SingingTeachersTalk Dr Shannon Coates: https://drshannoncoates.com/ (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk: Eps. 155 & 156 - Building Neurodiversity-Inclusive Voice Studios with Dr Shannon Coates (Parts One & Two) Mindy Pack: https://www.mindypack.com/ Dana Lentini: https://www.born2singkids.com/ (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.77 - How to Teach Singing to Children with Dana Lentini Singing and Teaching Singing - A Holistic Approach to Classical Voice by Janice L. Alexa delves into Style Vs Technique with Kaya Herstad-Carney. A Norwegian powerhouse based in the UK since '99, Kaya is a singer, songwriter and vocal coach, blending creativity and technique. Join us to unravel the secrets behind her success in artist development and vocal education. KEY TAKEAWAYS Balance is Key: Effective singing instruction involves finding the delicate equilibrium between style and technique. While technique provides the foundational skills for vocal health and control, encouraging individual style fosters uniqueness and emotional connection in singing. Technique Foundations: Prioritise the establishment of strong vocal fundamentals. Teach proper breathing, vocal exercises, and posture to ensure students have a solid technical base. This enables them to explore various styles with a foundation of control and strength. Expressive Stylistic Elements: Guide students in understanding the stylistic nuances of different genres. Encourage the exploration of varied vocal tones, articulations, and phrasing while ensuring that these stylistic choices are built upon a foundation of solid vocal technique. Adaptability: Emphasise the importance of adapting technique to suit different styles. What works well in classical singing might not translate seamlessly into contemporary or jazz styles. Encourage students to be versatile and open to adjusting their technique based on the demands of the chosen style. Individualised Approach: Recognize and celebrate each student's unique voice and style. Tailor teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and help students discover their own expressive strengths. A personalised approach fosters a positive and supportive environment for growth in both style and technique. BEST MOMENTS ‘Good vocal techniques are the ability to create the notes that you hear in your heart and your head' ‘Style is the artistic lengths of which we deliver the song depending on the genre' ‘Finding a good balance between style and technique is about not compromising either' ‘Technique is second to the emotional release of the style' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: kayamusic.com Social Media: @kayamusic Relevant Links & Mentions: Artists mentioned: Cher; George Ezra; Billie Eilish; Kelly Clarkson; Christina Aguilera; Shakira (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep.142 How to Sing and Teach Gospel with Mark De-Lisser British GQ Magazine interview with George Ezra The work of Ken Bozeman & Ian Howell (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep.143 Navigating the Music Industry with VocalizeU's Big Billy Clark & Elliott O'Connor Waterbear - The College of Music Kerrie Obert (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 59 Top Tongue Tips For Boosting High Frequency Energy with Kerrie Obert BBC Masterclass with Christina Aguilera BAST Book A Call ABOUT THE GUEST Kaya, a versatile artist from Norway, has called the UK home since '99. Claire de Mézerville López welcomes Chief Adam Waterbear DePaul to the Restorative Works! Podcast. Adam speaks with us about the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania's relational culture of communal input, a multidimensional leadership that seeks council from many members, not just a single or small group of leaders. This leadership model platforms various voices that span gender, age, experience, and expertise. Thereby it creates a holistic approach, leading to more inclusive decision-making that better serves the group's needs. He notes the intersections between restorative practices principles and those of the Lenape nation, noting how they overlap in several ways. Adam reminds us that the issues of the past are influencing our present and being informed about the past is crucial to making positive changes in the future. Time, healing, and facing shame are all part of experiencing and building community. Adam is a Chief of the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, where he serves as Tribal Storykeeper and Director of Education. He collaborates with academic institutions on initiatives related to the Lenape people, including land acknowledgements, mascots and representation, programming, and curriculum development. He is a Ph.D. candidate at Temple University and a Scholar-in-Residence at Arcadia University, where he currently teaches classes in Indigenous Studies, World Mythology, and Punk Rock. He co-curates the Lenape Cultural Center in Easton, PA, and the Lenape “Enduring Presence” exhibit, which is now travelling from Haverford College to Arcadia University. Tune in to learn more about the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania and Adam's amazing work with youth leaders and learners.
“I was at a restaurant, and I was like, ‘really, the veal chop?' In an instant, the curse broke and I could see for the first time. ‘Oh, wow, I'm eating body parts.' And I turned around and I saw my bag and it was an expensive Fendi bag. And I looked at it and I'm like, ‘this is not leather. This is the skin of an individual. This is a scam.'” – Rebecca Cappelli Rebecca Cappelli is an award-winning filmmaker and an animal rights activist. Her most recent film SLAY, is a hugely powerful documentary that follows Rebecca through seven countries as she uncovers the dark side of the fashion industry. What she finds will leave you thunder-struck. At least, it did me. With her, we learn what the industry is doing to our planet, to its workers and to the animals that are killed for fur, leather and wool. I think that most people have seen or heard stories in the media about the harms that fashion causes to both the planet and the people in the industry, but it's rare to hear about the animals, even though 2.5 billion of them are killed every year for our shoes, bags and clothing. Somehow and not by accident, they've remained invisible. Until now. SLAY will change you, I promise. Please listen, share and go watch SLAY. Welcome to CHANGEMAKERS with Catriona Oliphant, a new podcast series brought to you by CHROMERADIO in collaboration with the MONTHLY BAROMETER. In today's episode, I'm chatting with Poppy Mason-Watts, one of the founding members of WaterBear Network – a streaming platform where you can watch award-winning environmental and social films and documentaries for free. The first time I heard about WaterBear, it was introduced to me as ‘free environmental Netflix' - which I think is pretty cool!Poppy and I spoke about the power of storytelling and how WaterBear are bridging the gap between those important stories and clear actions you can take, such as petitions you can sign or nonprofits you can support. She shared examples of the positive impact she's seen as a result of people watching these films. One of them was when 99% of a group of students said they would be looking to work with leather alternatives after having watched Slay, a documentary about the behind-the-scenes of the fur and leather industries.Want to dive deeper?WaterBear Network - https://join.waterbear.com/Watch Slay - https://www.waterbear.com/watch/feature/62fe1af430a9286bbf6a380dHappiness Spells podcast - https://www.happinessspells.com/Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood - https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/margaret-atwood/oryx-and-crake/9781844080281Little linksWaterBear on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/waterbearnetwork/Why We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it.Thank you for caring and sending you lots of love! Spoilers in this episode! I watched a short documentary on the app Waterbear. It's about the life of pigs in farrowing crates at factory farms. Something animal activists throughout the world have fought hard against, but to little avail. Here are my thoughts. Next episode will be a more in-depth exploration of pigs as well as their connection to humans. My Links Follow me on IG: farm_sanctuary_tales If you want to support my work: Paypal
Today's episode is with Chris Huriwai who is the Co-Producer of MILKED - White Lies in Dairy Land. This is a project close to our heart as we are humbled to announce that Shukul has been featured as one of the health and nutrition experts in the film! The film will launch on a platform called WaterBear on the 18th of March and we are very excited to see it! Where to watch: https://join.waterbear.com/ Learn more about the project: https://milked.film/ MILKED is a topical feature documentary that exposes the whitewash of New Zealand's multi-billion-dollar dairy industry. Young activist Chris Huriwai travels around the country searching for the truth about how this source of national pride has become the nation's biggest threat. It's rapidly gone from a land with no cows to being the biggest exporter of dairy in the world, but the industry seems to be failing in every way possible. Featuring interviews with high-profile contributors such as Dr Jane Goodall, environmentalist and former actress Suzy Amis Cameron, and Cowspiracy co-director, Keegan Kuhn, MILKED reveals the behind-the-scenes reality of the kiwi dairy farming fairy-tale. It uncovers alarming information about the impacts of the industry on the environment and health, leading up to the discovery that we're on the edge of the biggest global disruption of food and agriculture in history. An impactful global story told with a local eye, the film also points to what New Zealand and other countries can do to change their fate.

Guest Jen Miller-Osborn from Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42 joins us to discuss their research into BendyBear. Highly malleable, highly sophisticated and over 10,000 bytes of machine code. The code behavior and features strongly correlate with that of the WaterBear malware family, which has been active since as early as 2009. The malware is associated with the cyber espionage group BlackTech, which many in the broader threat research community have assessed to have ties to the Chinese government, and is believed to be responsible for recent attacks against several East Asian government organizations. Due to the similarities with WaterBear, and the polymorphic nature of the code, Unit 42 named this novel Chinese shellcode “BendyBear.” It stands in a class of its own in terms of being one of the most sophisticated, well-engineered and difficult-to-detect samples of shellcode employed by an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT). The research can be found here: BendyBear: Novel Chinese Shellcode Linked With Cyber Espionage Group BlackTech

In this fascinating Business Leader Insight interview, we were joined by Ellen Windemuth, founder of the WaterBear Network; the first interactive streaming platform dedicated to the future of our planet.Ellen's passion for nature and conservation led to the creation of the WaterBear Network. This unique, free streaming service provides access to award-winning and inspirational content that empowers members to dive deeper, learn more and take action. Her experience in factual entertainment programming is extensive in both production and distribution.HERE'S A BREAKDOWN OF WHAT WE DISCUSSED IN THE INTERVIEW:Before we talk about Waterbear and your current focus, I wanted to start talking about the early days of your production company Off the Fence. What led you to make the decision to start your own business? (0:50)You described yourself as “unemployable” was that also because you had strong views on how a business should be and that kind of thing? (1:31)Could you tell us about Off the Fence as far as growth and reach is concerned? (2:19)As a business grows, an entrepreneur has to give up some of their control, in important decision making for example. How did you find this in your company, and would you have any tips for viewers going through this? (3:42)Off the Fence was acquired after 25 years, and of course, you're still a part of the business today but what led you to take that decision? (5:19)Could you tell us about Waterbear and the vision for the company? (7:22)You've described yourself in the past as someone who doesn't like taking risks. This often flies in the face of the stereotypical entrepreneur. What clicked for you to decide that you wanted to launch Waterbear? (9:51)Where do you see Waterbear in 10 years' time? (11:01)How have you found the last few months and how has the pandemic affected your business? (12:43)What drives you on and gets you up in the morning? In his role as president of the NGO, African Parks, Prince Harry was interviewed by the CEO and by the Head of Strategy for the newly launched environmental streaming network WaterBear. Prince Harry has been president of African Parks since 2017. Ellen Windemuth is the founder of well known film and documentary production, co-production and distribution company, called Off the Fence. It produces nonfiction films in the science, history, adventure, human stories, and the natural history genres. Ellen always knew what she wanted out of her career, and she went for it. Like any path in life, it's never straightforward. We have to overcome obstacles, leave our current jobs, and a boardroom of wide eyed, short sighted men. As such, Ellen left the ties of employment, and founded her own success. Firstly she knew she wanted to produce documentaries in the Animal and Human stories genre. Secondly Ellen appreciated and understood the power and impact a bigger team can have on a project. With this in her mind she jumped into the unknown and she started her own production company. Today, her creative team have been recognised by more than 80 awards. Ellen and her team are about to launch WaterBear Network, a lifelong dream of Ellen's. WaterBear is a breakthrough in Documentary film production and viewing - "a global digital free access network, for people who care about our future on this planet." Every story has a message to the ear of the listener. I believe that one of Ellen's biggest messages, is for people to step into the unknown, and go for it. This is exactly what Ellen did. She pressed the curious button, and went for it. Allow Ellen's life story to mirror your own, and learn how you can overcome obstacles. A successful woman, who teaches from doing, and not just saying. Please enjoy! Our guests: Tamara Tunie, former co-star of Law & Order Special Victims Unit (now in its record-tying 20th season on NBC), and star of the recent BET original movie Her Only Choice Iwhich replays tonight); and Ellen Windemuth, founder/owner of WaterBear Network, putting together an environment-centric programming service set to launch in the U.S. during 2020.
This week on The Music Scout podcast we talk to WaterBear college founder and director Bruce Dickinson about how his new education system will benefit the students and how there needs to be a change in how kids are being taught in schools too. As well as that we talk about how to get the best out of students and their career paths and how much lecturers/tutors can influence them and their lives. It's been really intriguing to hear what WaterBear is doing right now for the music education system and as education and improving peoples careers and lives is a real passion of mine, it was a privilege to have Bruce on to chat about education and progression. This week the boys are joined by super talented Sam Bell to discuss his life as a session guitarist, solo artist, educator and work in the tech metal band Mask of Judas. They wade deeper into the imposter syndrome from last week and Sam talks about some of the issues around his musical identity. Things then circle back to guitar in higher education and the start of an intriguing new commercial music institution called WaterBear. This all pales in comparison however to the mid-episode discovery that Dan was in a myspace era technical punk band! [Episode 33] Would you have needed to worry about a T-Rex in the Garden of Eden? What did God have his creatures eat before Adam's sin messed things up? We explore this and then hear a delightful report on a super (tiny) creature, the Waterbear aka Tardigrade!
Extremophiles are the toughest organisms on the planet, able to thrive in extremes of hot, cold, acid, alkaline, pressure and even deep underground inside rocks. The champion is the deceptively cute tardigrade or waterbear, which can even survive the vacuum of space (if you missed it, go listen to Mal Webb's Waterbear song).Possibly even more extreme are supermassive black holes, which are expected to distort space itself when they meet in colliding galaxies. Except that a recent experiment to detect the gravitational waves given off by these binary pairs failed to find any—astrophysicist Ryan Shannon tells us what that means for our understanding of the universe. And Brant Gibson from the Centre for Nanoscale Biophotonics explains what those words mean and how they'll help shape the future of personalised medicine. He'll also be talking about this research in Melbourne Knowledge Week on 20 October 2015, at a breakfast event called Up Close and Revealed: Life at the Nanoscale.
