We've been told to run, bike, and diet our way to lower cholesterol, but what if the real game changer is strength training? In this episode, Amy Hudson and Dr. James Fisher unpack the science behind resistance training and why it might be the best exercise to lower cholesterol. They explore what research actually says about lifting weights, LDL reduction, and long-term heart health — and why it might be time to rethink your approach to fitness. Dr. Fisher defines cholesterol--a waxy, hormone-like substance that your body produces and regulates on its own. While it often gets labeled as “bad,” it plays vital roles in hormone production and cell health. Dr. Fisher highlights that what we call “cholesterol” is actually carried in the blood by lipoproteins. LDL (low-density lipoproteins) can clog arteries, while HDL (high-density lipoproteins) helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream. Amy breaks down how LDL is considered the “bad” cholesterol because it can harden and narrow artery walls. In contrast, HDL acts like a cleanup crew, carrying unused cholesterol back to the liver to be broken down or reused. Dr. Fisher discusses a meta-analysis of 69 studies involving over 2,000 people that showed consistent benefits from strength training. Participants saw reductions in total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides, along with increases in HDL and adiponectin levels. Amy points out that participants who strength trained saw an average drop in total cholesterol of about 8.5 mg/dL. That's a significant improvement — and it didn't require any changes to diet. Dr. Fisher emphasizes that these changes happened independently of calorie restriction or food tracking. Amy and Dr. Fisher explain that the cholesterol-lowering effects of strength training were consistent, whether people trained once, twice, or three times a week. Frequency mattered less than simply doing the work. Dr. Fisher breaks down one individual study in the meta-analysis that used six months of full-body strength training. The results showed reduced fat mass, decreased LDL, and increased HDL — all strong markers of better metabolic health. The cholesterol improvements were not just a side effect of losing weight or fat. The act of strength training alone led to these changes, regardless of body composition. Amy challenges the common belief that cholesterol is only affected by food or medication. The data shows strength training is a powerful, underused tool to shift your numbers naturally. Learn how strength training offers more than just physical benefits — it's also a stress reliever. Pushing through a high-effort workout helps unload mental baggage, too. Amy and Dr. Fisher explore how dietary choices still matter — and discuss how eggs, red meat, and even wine influence cholesterol levels. They encourage variety and moderation over strict elimination. Dr. Fisher advises people to “eat the rainbow,” meaning to include colorful, nutrient-dense foods in your diet. He cautions that many Western diets are too dominated by fried and processed foods — and lack the diversity our bodies need. Amy and Dr. Fisher conclude that combining smart dietary choices with consistent strength training may be one of the most effective ways to lower cholesterol naturally. Saturated fat -- not eggs -- is the key culprit behind high LDL cholesterol, which can lead to cardiovascular disease And in fact, a diet low in saturated fat and high in dietary cholesterol, such as that found in eggs, can lower blood cholesterol levels. This -- according to a new study from researchers at the University of South Australia. But what are we to make of this study, which received funding from an offshoot of the American Egg Board, an organization focused on marketing and promoting eggs? Dr. Neal Barnard joins Chuck Carroll on this episode of The Exam Room to tell us what he makes of these findings, and to answer your questions about saturated fats, dietary cholesterol and eggs. In this episode of The Exam Room, you'll learn: - Whether eggs raise cholesterol for everyone - Whether eggs egg whites and free-range eggs are healthier options - Dr. Barnard's favorite egg substitutes - Whether eggs or meat and dairy have a greater impact on cholesterol - How many eggs are safe to eat per week - How saturated fat influences cholesterol absorption - How quickly eggs can raise cholesterol - Genetic factors that influence cholesterol This episode is sponsored by The Gregory J. A new study has suggested that individuals consuming whole cheese, experienced lower levels of LDL cholesterol compared to individuals who consumed deconstructed cheese which affects the cheese matrix (the network of proteins of fat and minerals made during the cheese manufaturing process) and alters the bioavailability of beneficial fats in the cheese. There may also be a difference between how men and women respond to cheese consumption. This study also challenges the historical view that all saturated fat consumption is harmful. Story at-a-glance Nearly 40 million Americans take statins daily, yet these drugs don't fix the root cause of high cholesterol and often cause serious side effects like muscle pain and insulin resistance Dr. Adriana Quinones-Camacho, a cardiologist at NYU Langone Health, recommends lifestyle changes — like eating clean fats, exercising, and losing weight — as first-line treatments before resorting to risky cholesterol-lowering medications Eliminating processed seed oils and consuming whole-food omega-3s from fatty fish (in optimal amounts) will help improve your lipid profile and support natural cholesterol clearance through liver and cell function Excess weight raises low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels and leads to plaque buildup in arteries; reducing sugar, increasing fiber, and adding daily movement reverses this damage and promotes long-term cardiovascular health Statins are linked to diabetes, cataracts, muscle breakdown, and depleted CoQ10, making lifestyle changes not only safer but also more effective for lasting heart and metabolic health

A cardiologist reveals how to lower cholesterol naturally. Dr. Steve Lome joins Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast. Key points discussed include: Prevalence of high cholesterol: Dr. Lome emphasizes that high cholesterol is a significant issue, often unnoticed by those affected. He notes that while genetics can play a role, lifestyle choices are the primary contributors to high cholesterol levels. Dietary impact: The discussion highlights the importance of a whole food, plant-based, low-fat diet in managing cholesterol levels. Dr. Lome shares anecdotes of patients who have dramatically lowered their LDL cholesterol through dietary changes, often within a month. Genetic component: Dr. Lome addresses the misconception that high cholesterol is purely genetic, stating that only a small percentage of the population (0.2%) has a genetic condition that prevents them from lowering cholesterol through diet. Saturated and trans fats: The conversation covers the impact of saturated and trans fats on cholesterol levels, with a particular focus on dairy products as a major source of saturated fat in the American diet. Statins: Dr. Lome discusses the limitations of statins in treating high cholesterol, arguing that dietary changes are more effective in addressing the root causes of heart disease, which include inflammation and arterial damage. Dr. David Jockers explores a study where consuming 12 Oreo cookies daily for 16 days lowered LDL cholesterol by 72%, more than any statin drug has shown. This challenges the belief that high LDL cholesterol is the main risk factor for heart disease. Dr. Jockers discusses lean mass hyper responders—individuals with high LDL levels on a low-carb diet who maintain excellent metabolic health markers like low triglycerides and high HDL cholesterol. The episode highlights the need to look beyond LDL cholesterol to assess heart health, focusing on markers like fasting insulin levels, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Many patients with hypothyroidism struggle with high cholesterol due to how thyroid hormone regulates cholesterol metabolism. When thyroid hormone is low, cholesterol levels will increase. For this reason, many thyroid patients are placed on a statin to combat this high cholesterol. But is this necessary? Maybe in some situations, but definitely not all. Before you take a statin or another cholesterol-lowering medication, try these natural treatments first: 1. T3 containing thyroid medication like liothyronine or Cytomel. T3 is far more potent than levothyroxine at lowering cholesterol and can be considered if you are taking thyroid medication but still not seeing your numbers go down. 2. Eat to improve your thyroid. Instead of eating to lower cholesterol, eat to improve your thyroid. By boosting your thyroid with food you will get benefits on both your weight and cholesterol at the same time. 3. Glucomannan. Glucomannan is a soluble dietary fiber that may help lower cholesterol by up to 10%. 4. Berberine. Berberine is a plant alkaloid that can lower cholesterol by around 15-20% and can be used in conjunction with other cholesterol-lowering supplements and medications. 5. Black seed oil. Black seed oil is another botanical with modest cholesterol-lowering effects but also happens to help reduce thyroid antibodies and boost thyroid function. This is a great option if you have Hashimoto's. Interesting in losing weight? So go ahead, be an omnivore, vegan, pescatarian, or whatever works for you, as long as you're including the advice from today's episode. This week Danielle addresses the following questions surrounding nutrition and lipids: What is dietary cholesterol and how does it impact lipids? How can you lower LDL cholesterol without raising triglycerides and reduce APOE? Which interventions lower cardiovascular risk the most? Which foods are high in saturated fats and what dietary recommendations lower the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and LDL cholesterol? Why does polyunsaturated fat lower LDL cholesterol? Which oils are better for your lipid levels? What is fiber, why is it important in your diet, and how does it lower cholesterol? Which foods are packed with viscous fiber, and how much per day should you consume? What is a portfolio diet and what kind of impact does it have on LDL cholesterol? Find all the papers and research studies discussed this week on Instagram @wellnessfvfjournalclub. Thank you so much for taking the time to contribute to a generation that values fact over fiction!
