Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is a trio of cozy mysteries by Claudia Gray, all starring Jane Austen characters: The Murder of Mr. Wickham (2022), The Late Mrs. Willoughby (2023), and The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bough (2024). These are an absolutely delightful (and non-stressful) way to revisit these characters, and there's even a little helping of romance. General Tilney vs. Sir Walter Elliot: Who Will Wear This Year's Crown of the Ultimate Jane Austen Villain? In this episode, we dive into the complex characters of General Tilney from Northanger Abbey and Sir Walter Elliot from Persuasion. General Tilney, with his cold obsession with wealth and status, manipulates those around him, as seen in his harsh treatment of Catherine Morland when he discovers she's not as wealthy as he thought. Sir Walter, on the other hand, is consumed by vanity and social rank, caring more about appearances than his daughters' well-being. Both men are driven by their selfish desires and social ambitions. As we wrap up, we bring these two characters head-to-head, comparing their motivations and actions. General Tilney ruthlessly controls others, while Sir Walter is driven by his obsession with status and appearance. But which one is the ultimate Austen villain? Join us as we dissect their villainous traits, and with your votes, we'll decide who deserves the crown! Where can you find Ellis? Instagram: @historian_ellis Where can you find Caily? This week, Elle and Catrina read two Northanger Abbey adaptations. While each book is part of a collection of adaptations that we have read before. One is Northanger Abbey through the eyes of Henry Tilney. The other is a modern take - do modern, Catherine might be a Twilight girl. Elle reviews Henry Tilney's Diary by Amanda Grange. This is the third book by Amanda Grange Elle has read for the podcast and, like the others, it doesn't disappoint.  If you love Henry Tilney, then this book will have you falling in love even more. What's more, we finally get to see the end of the book play out in real-time.Catrina got to re-read the modern adaptation called Northanger Abbey by Val McDermid. This modern adaptation is part of the Jane Austen project that brought us Eligible and Emma. What makes this modern adaptation unique is that this version of Catherine is very relatable to anyone who was into supernatural books in the early 20-teens. How did this film compare to the book? What was changed? What stayed true to the story? How did this adaptation compare to other films? With a few deviations from the book, this adaptation actually improves upon the original story. Catherine indulges in a few book fantasies. Isabella feels the repercussions of her actions. Will this ruin her chances at a happily ever after with our hero? No, actually, he found it kinda cute. Just further proof that Tilney really is the best Austen hero. While there might not be a scandal between Catherine and Henry, there is certainly trouble afoot. Authors on the Air host Pam Stack is proud to welcome new writer Alexander Tilney to the studio. Alexander Tilney is a graduate of the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers and has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony. His writing has appeared in The Southwest Review, The Journal of the Office for Creative Research, and Gelf Magazine. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, theater artist Sarah Hughes.  St. James is an exclusive New England boarding school known for grooming generations of leaders. Ben Weeks is a true insider -- his ancestors helped found St. James, his older brother taught him all the slang, and he's just won a national championship in squash. But after fourteen long years of waiting, Ben arrives at school only to find that the reality of St. James doesn't quite match up with his imaginings. At the same time, his new roommate, Ahmed Al-Khaled, the son of a fabulously wealthy Emirati sheik, can't navigate the unspoken rules of New England blue bloods. Even as Ben and Ahmed struggle to prove themselves in the place they have revered for so long, each of them must face losing it forever. The Expectations is at once a finely drawn portrait of American privilege and a subtle exploration of class, race, and tradition. Above all, it is a tender, sharp, and evocative debut about the pain and treachery of adolescence, and the difficulty -- wherever one finds oneself -- of truly belonging. @Copyrighted by the Authors on the Air Global Radio Network LLC.  Listen to the podcast at www.soundcloud.com/authorsontheair or your favorite podcast app.
