Send us a textKatie and Bridget draw a Mons Pubis on a whiteboard as they re-watch the erotic thriller: Basic Instinct! It's a movie all about how you might think you know who the killer is based on the very first scene of the movie, but actually it might not be that person because there's some other people who could have done it, but then it also might not be them either, all while the original person you thought it was continues to say that they're the killer the entire time but nobody believes them... Look Sharon Stone was the killer alright!! Don't get it twisted! Come along as we meet Nick (aka "Shooter"), a v-neck loving horny cop who's just trying to solve this murder case while also attempting to bone Catherine, the literal murderer even though she never gets convicted for some reason. As Nick becomes more and more of a stalker, people around him begin to die and Catherine becomes more and more cryptic. Kind of like how a killer would act, ya know!? Will the two of them get together and somehow nobody will get stabbed with an ice pick? Are pubes back in style or is that only allowed for 90's Sharon Stone!? Released in 1992, it stars Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone, George Dzundza, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Leilani Sarelle
Edie, get some ice cream! We're celebrating 2009's “Grey Gardens” with that fine HBO polish, impeccable prosthetics, a sweeping score, the wild range of Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore working harder than anyone to bring Little Edie Beale to life in all her glory, misery and resilience. Jeanne Tripplehorn's Jackie O, Malcolm Gets's Gould and Ken Howard's Phelan Beale, to say nothing of those Maysles and that Baldwin, buoy the Beales through a thoroughly quotable, heartbreaking and hilarious rise to cult stardom. Zo goes on an ocean cruise. The voyage turns out to be longer than he expected. In fact, he finds out that he's at a time and place where this particular sea voyage will come to an end sometime in the middle of Neveruary. Being on a permanent tour on the ocean has it's perks, like, being so adjusted to boating life that one never gets sea sick. Then there are the downsides like constantly being harassed by pirates, being cheated by men drifting in the open ocean, horrifying mutated sea monsters, and never seeing the site of dry land again. Zo had heard a lot of strange tales while on this trip such as the story of The Mariner who had gills behind his ears so that he could breath underwater and that he was traveling with a woman and a special child who had a tattoo of where dry land could be found. On the one hand, Zo is tempted to find this Mariner and follow him and his companions to there destination. On the other hand, Zo had heard that this Mariner is being hounded by a group of ornery Smokers. Ain't nobody got time to be dealin' with no Smokers, man! Might as well sit back, relax and enjoy the Waterworld. Merman wants to go with the wind. Merman wants adventure. Merman needs friends? In the future, the world has become, sigh, a water world. Mariner (Kevin Coster) loves yacht rock and boating. When he's not exploring the ocean's depths, he dabbles in herbology. He's just minding his own business when everyone gets into a liquid fuss. Helen's (Jeanne Tripplehorn) daughter has a tattoo map on her back, and it leads to dry land. Land seems cool. Deacon (Dennis Hopper) and his gang-o-dudes (Smokers) want that map because dry land promises have been made. Needless to say, this does not go well for Mariner's rad future boat. RTS explores underwater mysteries and fights off sea monsters. Jeremy, Collin and La-Mar make sure to take down a few hordes of Smokers and enjoy a lime or two. It gets strange on the open ocean. Real strange! Take a ride in an upgradable aircraft and decide if this water adventure is for you. Adieu, summer!

Tune in as friend of the show Guy Bradford returns to his guest chair once again for a review and recap of Very Bad Things, the 1998 black comedy that follows the ludicrous and murderous consequences of a Las Vegas bachelor party gone tragically wrong. The different ways in which this movie's utterly ruthless and cynical sense of humor hits the hosts, trying to determine if this has any queer-coding going on, Urban Dictionary's various definitions of “flyboy,” and the cult leader vibe that Christian Slater exudes here comprise just a few of the topics for this episode. Written and directed by Peter Berg, Very Bad Things stars Jon Favreau, Christian Slater, Leland Orser, Jeremy Piven, Daniel Stern, Cameron Diaz, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tyler Cole Malinger, Joey Zimmerman, Kobe Tai, and Russell B. Mickey Blue Eyes was just the 61st-highest grossing movie of 1999. The only major US release of the weekend of August 20, 1999, Mickey Blue Eyes opened in third place while The Sixth Sense continued to dominate the box office. It would go on to make $54 million on a $75 million budget. Directed by Kids in the Hall alum Kelly Makin and written by Robert Kuhn and Adam Scheinmann, it was ostensibly a romcom vehicle for Hugh Grant and Jeanne Tripplehorn but works better as a romcom between Hugh Grant and James Caan. Critics were iffy, with most still praising Grant for carrying the movie with a pitch-perfect performance playing to all his strengths as both a comic and dramatic actor and acknowledging the fun of the premise as well as the strength of the jokes but faulting it for failing to carry those things through. Many also pointed to the fact that, upon release, Mickey Blue Eyes was already the inferior Hugh Grant movie after Notting Hill, and the inferior mob comedy after Analyze This. Joining John and Jenn to talk about it this week is writer Meghan Leigh Paulk. You can find out more about Meghan on her website.

Hey, Friendela! We're back with a movie that just had its 25th anniversary and as the title suggests, that movie is Sliding Doors which surprisingly doesn't include that many sliding doors. But we digress. This movie stars Goopy Paltrow as Fern Mayo and Vylette, John Lynch as the hot guy used as a plot device, John Hannah as a charming caricature, and Jeanne Tripplehorn who graciously let Gwen pretend she was the star. Our ongoing series of notable Tom Cruise vehicles from different eras continues, all leading to the release of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I coming this July. The next entry in this series focuses on one of the most successful thrillers of the '90's which is approaching its 30th Anniversary - it also happens to be one Cruise's biggest hits but for some reason, it doesn't receive nearly as much ongoing discussion as several of his other blockbusters like Jerry Maguire, Top Gun, or A Few Good Men. Could it be because it was SUCH a dense movie geared towards grown-ups?Not sure but the pedigree was there - it's an adaptation of the best-selling John Grisham novel of the same name and is directed by the late, great Sydney Pollack (Three Days of the Condor, Tootsie). Cruise stars as Mitch McDeere, a hot young tax attorney just graduating law school who is being courted by big-time law firms from all over the country but chooses one located at a smaller film in Memphis. He moves there with his wife played by Jeanne Tripplehorn and starts to gradually realize that not everything going on at the film might be legit....and trouble ensues. :o The stacked cast includes Gene Hackman, Hal Holbrook, David Straithard, Ed Harris, Wilford Brimley, and Holly Hunter. Apparently NO ONE ever leaves this film alive.....let's find out why. :o See below for links to two different short funny videos examining one of this film's most memorable scenes. :)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UP8lVT7Daghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gchYh2d0q0oHost: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Fans of lewdness and vulgarity: look no further! This edition of Overlapping Dialogue, in continuing our journey through the loud and proud 1990s, spotlights two of the decade's most stylish entries with Hard Boiled and Basic Instinct. But before we dive face-first into the carnage, our Blue Plate Special sampling forces us to confront the passing of iconic (albeit fictional) TV and screen legend Rick Dalton, offer up some brief thoughts on new releases Hypnotic and Peter Pan & Wendy, and analyze from afar a host of headlines emanating from the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. After trashing Jonathan Debt (enemy of the pod) yet again for his latest spewing of excrement, we arrive to our pulpy double feature presentation: listen as we marvel at the gleeful insanity of John Woo's wild Hong Kong actioner and savor the paperback profundity intrinsic to Paul Verhoeven's direction of stars Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. On Bad Movie Night, we look at a film critics or audiences have deemed a "bad movie", but we enjoyed. This month, we're discussing the greatest Valentine's Day date movie ever, Basic Instinct! From leg-crossing, to idiot cops, to aggressive sexual positions, to a battle of the hotness between Catherine Tremell and Beth Garner, to the complete lack of interest the film has in DNA evidence: this is one podcast you do NOT want to miss! A former rock star, Johnny Boz, is brutally killed during sex, and the case is assigned to detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) of the SFPD. During the investigation, Nick meets Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), a crime novelist who was Boz's girlfriend when he died. Catherine proves to be a very clever and manipulative woman, and though Nick is more or less convinced that she murdered Boz, he is unable to find any evidence. Later, when Nilsen, Nick's rival in the police, is killed, Nick suspects of Catherine's involvement in it. He then starts to play a dangerous lust-filled mind game with Catherine to nail her, but as their relationship progresses, the body count rises and contradicting evidences force Nick to start questioning his own suspicions about Catherine's guilt. Writer and performer Alison Tafel (Bojack Horseman) joins to discuss the post-apocalyptic action spectacular WATERWORLD starring Kevin Costner, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Dennis Hopper. Director Kevin Reynolds' environmentalist cautionary tale of a water-submerged planet was the most notoriously troubled production of Hollywood's old school blockbuster era, going wildly over-budget and releasing to middling reviews and an underwhelming box office take in 1995. Time has (somewhat) redeemed the reputation of WATERWORLD, with the contemporary consensus indicating a more favorable view of the film's entertainment value and worldwide box office performance, not to mention the long-running and beloved Universal Studios stunt show it has inspired. Drench yourself in Mama Needs A Movie's discussion of one of cinema history's most ambitious and over-reaching excesses, plus diversions into Ben Affleck, hotel movie watching, early pandemic anxiety, Keanu Reeves, theatre kids, TÁR, steampunk, The Boy Next Door, and much, much more! WATERWORLD is currently available to stream with subscription to STARZ.
The brilliant and hilarious Janet Varney returns to discuss a pick from her teenage years, The Night We Never Met (1993). Both agree there is much to enjoy with the movie's genuinely flawed characters and tougher moments. Bonus talk about how some of these fashions are alive and well today. Keep up with all of Janet's projects, especially The JV Club, Braving the Elements, and Truth & Justice with Bob Ruff. Frustrated with his inconsiderate roommates, Sam (Matthew Broderick) takes turns occupying an apartment with Brian (Kevin Anderson), a sloppy husband-to-be, and Ellen (Annabella Sciorra), an aspiring painter. Although Sam and Ellen never meet in person, they fall for each other through romantic gestures left during their individual days in the apartment. Also stars Jeanne Tripplehorn, Justine Bateman, Christine Baranski, Doris Roberts, Greg Germann, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Billy Campbell, Michelle Hurst, and early career Lewis Black, Naomi Campbell, Brooke Smith, Bitty Schram, Michael Imperioli, Paul Guilfoyle, and Garry Shandling. Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of the most notorious cinema bombs of all time. On this week's episode, the gang discusses one of the most infamous big budget films of all time - Waterworld, AKA Kevin's Gate, AKA Fishtar. Waterworld was the most expensive movie ever made, at the time, and was plagued by bad press, difficult production, and clashes between the main star and director. Not A Bomb could not tackle such a film on their own, so they called friend of the show - Josh from The VHS Files podcast to assist in the discussion. Was Waterworld the disaster the press made it out to be? Was this a case of critics reviewing the budget rather than the film? Or is this really a simple and fun Mad Max ripoff with some spectacular action sequences? Listen and find out! Grunge up your unwashed hair and please put out that endless chain of cigarettes as we succumb to the 90s slacker vortex that is Reality Bites. Do Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke's characters actually deserve each other because they both suck so much? And should we feel bad for Ben Stiller or relieved that he totally dodged a bullet there? Could we just watch Steve Zahn be adorable and Janeane Garofalo in her perfect vintage outfits instead? And can we directly blame all the shitty behavior and toxic relationships during our 20s on this movie? Jeanne Tripplehorn (The Terminal List) joins Andy Richter to talk about getting her start on the radio, crying through Juilliard, rejecting classic acting techniques, and more.
Fresh out of Juilliard, Jeanne Tripplehorn's first screen role was “Basic Instinct.” That started a 30+ year run of films like “The Firm,” “Waterworld,” “Sliding Doors,” and series such as “Criminal Minds,” “Big Love,” and her latest, “The Terminal List” for Amazon. In this episode, she talks about her love for extensive research, the most important tools for an actor—confidence, relaxation, and focus; how the happenings off-screen affect what's on the screen; and why, at this point in her career, she just wants to play. Plus we get the scoop on her preternatural ability to sing classic rock songs in the voice of Julie Andrews. Follow Back To One on Instagram

Plot: -I would marry 1998 Cameron Diaz-Christian Slater is always slimy.-The old troupe of the woman planning everything, being stressed, getting on him about wedding stuff, and then breaking a few days before the wedding, she doesn't like some of his friends. Awesome. Then making him profess his love.-How 90's to record them waving goodbye.-Pretty formulaic, wedding, bachelor party antics... drinking, smoking, not sure about the drugs though.-That stripper is pretty hot... But I don't get Kyle saying "I can't do this"... Its not implied that he would fuck the stripper, just get a dance. Nothing wrong with that.-That's a way to kill someone-I don't like it when Christian Slater makes a good point about concealing an accidental murder.-That security guy could've made it so much easier on himself... Poor guy. Why would you stab him with a cork screw?-The movie is billed a black comedy, but it's not funny. The situation is mildy humorous, but its mostly just dark.-Can you imagine drinking that much, doing that many drugs, then having to just stop and start cleaning everything up? (Triple Lindy)-The burial and body re-arrangement was... Interesting. I'd like to think we'd be more functional than those guys.-That whole overreaction at the gas station about Whizzers and his paranoia is weird.-Who would break like Adam did at the rehearsal dinner?-Wow... Michael killing Adam.-How many troop rallying speeches does Boyd have in him? This one he has to accentuate with a kiss, though. I think I would punch someone-Michael mounting Adams wife at the funeral is a weird tonal shift, and the whole overreaction during the funeral. It hard waffles from SUPER dark "comedy" to this almost slapstick, over the top, trying to be funny.-Blaming Adam for sleeping with a prostitute is interesting... Could work.-Boyd attacking Lois is unwarranted, but I love her self defense and biting his dick.-Boyd then killing Michael, framing him for Lois' murder is DARK.-Laura being morally superior to Kyle, calling his friends 'jackasses' and only caring about the wedding is just so disconnected. She doesn't care anyone was killed, just that her wedding will happen? Strange. We are jackasses messing around, none of us are murderers...
