"Alice" is a sitcom that aired on CBS from 1976-1985. The show is based on the 1974 Martin Scorsese film, "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore". The story follows Alice Hyatt, a widow who moves from New Jersey to Phoenix, Arizona, with her son, Tommy. She then takes a job at a roadside eatery named Mel's Diner. One of the show's catchphrases, "Kiss my grits!" remains a part of the cultural lexicon. The show was a ratings success, especially during its early seasons. Alice's nine season run made it one of the longer-running sitcoms of the '70s and '80s. Despite having such a long run the show didn't recieve much syndication and is rarely seen modern day. Will this show hold up with the S1E1 boys nearly 50 years since the show premiered? Listen as they deep dive the show's pilot episode. Starring: Linda Lavin, Vic Tayback, Beth Howland, Polly Holliday, Dennis Dugan, Arthur Space, & Alfred Lutter III www.S1E1POD.com Instagram & X (Twitter): @S1E1POD

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review, where this week we're dusting off the golf clubs and heading to the green for one of Adam Sandler's most beloved and chaotic comedies: Happy Gilmore. Directed by Dennis Dugan and released in 1996, this sports-comedy cult classic swings hard with juvenile gags, unexpected heart, and more fistfights than you'd ever expect in a golf movie.Happy Gilmore (Sandler) is a failed hockey player with a temper problem and a surprisingly powerful slapshot. After discovering that his unique (and deeply unorthodox) swing can drive a golf ball the length of a football field, he stumbles into the PGA tour—not out of love for the sport, but to raise money to save his beloved grandmother's house from foreclosure. But golf, as it turns out, is full of smug pros, snooty country clubs, and unspoken rules. Happy's arrival—complete with loud trousers, foul language, and literal wrestling moves—ruffles feathers, especially with tour golden boy Shooter McGavin (a scene-stealing Christopher McDonald), who quickly becomes Happy's nemesis. With the help of former pro Chubbs Peterson (Carl Weathers, complete with a wooden hand) and love interest/publicist Virginia Venit (Julie Bowen), Happy sets out to conquer golf in his own anarchic way. There's also an unforgettable appearance from Bob Barker—yes, that Bob Barker—in one of the most unexpected and hilarious cameos in movie history.Happy Gilmore is probably best suited to older kids and teens thanks to the language and violence (including a man being hit by a Volkswagen and another being mauled by an alligator). But for grown-up kids of the '90s, it's a nostalgic gem that still delivers laughs—often in spite of itself. It's not highbrow, it's not subtle, and it's certainly not refined, but it knows exactly what it is: a hilarious, scrappy underdog sports comedy with a foul mouth and a huge heart.Happy Gilmore is loud, juvenile, and a little bit stupid—and that's exactly why it works. It's a goofy celebration of doing things your own way, sticking it to pompous gatekeepers, and punching your way to success… even on the golf course. Fore! ⛳️

Is The Howling the best werewolf movie ever made? That's the big question on this week's Born to Watch, where the team dives deep into this 1981 horror classic. In The Howling (1981) Movie Review, Whitey and Damo take a nostalgic trip back to one of the most iconic (and unsettling) werewolf films of all time. The crew kicks things off by reminiscing about their first encounters with The Howling. For Damo, it was a forbidden treat at the movie theater as a kid, lured in by schoolyard hype over one particular scene. Whitey recalls the unforgettable VHS cover—the infamous clawed-through poster that haunted every video rental store. But does this film still hold up more than 40 years later? The discussion quickly turns to the werewolf genre as a whole. Why are werewolf movies so rare? What makes The Howling stand out from other lycanthropic horror films like An American Werewolf in London or Dog Soldiers? The gang breaks down the film's eerie atmosphere, its chilling transformation sequences, and the stunning practical effects that made Rob Bottin (the man behind The Thing) a legend in Hollywood.Of course, it wouldn't be Born to Watch without some hilarious tangents. The guys analyze everything from the film's oddball characters (like the ultra-horny werewolf Marsha) to its bizarre plot twists, including one of the worst sting operations in movie history. And let's not forget the infamous werewolf sex scene—equal parts steamy and unsettling. Was it necessary? Was it too much? Or was it just the kind of batshit-crazy moment that makes ‘80s horror so much fun?Speaking of fun, The Howling is filled with hidden gems and cool trivia, including surprise cameos from legendary director Roger Corman and future Adam Sandler film director Dennis Dugan. The team also unpacks the film's lasting legacy, from its disastrous sequels (Howling VI: The Freaks, anyone?) to its influence on modern werewolf flicks. And in true Born to Watch fashion, there's plenty of debate:

THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta The Howling 1981 In a red light district, newswoman Karen White is bugged by the police, investigating serial killer Eddie Quist, who has been molesting her through phone calls. After police officers find them in a peep-show cabin and shoot Eddie, Karen becomes emotionally disturbed and loses her memory. Hoping to conquer her inner demons, she heads for the Colony, a secluded retreat where the creepy residents are rather too eager to make her feel at home. There also seems to be a bizarre connection between Eddie Quist and this supposedly safe haven. And when, after nights of being tormented by unearthly cries, Karen ventures into the forest and makes a terrifying discovery The Howling is a 1981 American horror film directed by Joe Dante. It is based on the novel of the same name by Gary Brandner. The film stars Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan, and Robert Picardo. The Howling was released in the United States on March 13, 1981, and became a moderate success, grossing $17.9 million at the box office. It received generally positive reviews, with praise for the makeup special effects by Rob Bottin. The film won the 1980 Saturn Award for Best Horror Film while still in development, and was one of the three high-profile werewolf-themed horror films released in 1981, alongside An American Werewolf in London and Wolfen. Its financial success aided Dante's career, and prompted Warner Bros. to hire Dante (as director) and Michael Finnell (as producer) for Gremlins. A series consisting of seven sequels arose from the film's success. A remake is in development, with Andy Muschietti set to direct. Karen White is a Los Angeles television news anchor who is being stalked by serial killer Eddie Quist. In cooperation with the police, she takes part in a scheme to capture Eddie by agreeing to meet him in a sleazy porn theater. Eddie forces Karen to watch a video of a young woman being bound and raped, and when Karen turns around to see Eddie, she screams. The police enter and shoot Eddie, and although Karen is safe, she suffers amnesia. Her therapist, Dr. George Waggner, decides to send her and her husband, Bill Neill, to the "Colony", a secluded resort in the countryside where he sends patients for treatment. The Colony is filled with strange characters, and one, a sultry nymphomaniac named Marsha, tries to seduce Bill. When he resists her unsubtle sexual overtures, he is attacked and scratched on the arm by a werewolf while returning to his cabin. After Bill's attack, Karen summons her friend, Terri Fisher, to the Colony, and Terri connects the resort to Eddie through a sketch he left behind, having previously discovered that Eddie's body disappeared from the morgue. Karen begins to suspect that Bill is hiding a secret far more threatening than marital infidelity. Later that night, Bill meets Marsha at a campfire in the woods. While having sex in the moonlight, they undergo a frightening transformation into werewolves. While investigating the next morning, Terri is attacked by a werewolf in a cabin, though she escapes after cutting the monster's hand off with an ax. She runs to Wagner's office and places a phone call to her boyfriend Chris Halloran, who has been alerted about the Colony's true nature.

This week on Saturday Night Jive we're talking about the 1992 comedy Brain Donors.  There are no SNL alum in this film but it was directed by Dennis Dugan who after watching Problem Child, Beverly Hills Ninja, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, You Don't Mess With The Zohan, Grown Ups, Jack And Jill, and Grown Ups 2 feels like an honorary member of our family.  This is a "remake" of The Marx Brothers film A Night At The Opera (with a little bit of A Day At The Races thrown in) starring John Turturro, the guy who ran the torture machine in The Princess Bride, and some other dude as analogs for Groucho, Chico and Harpo.  It's an odd movie with a few decent gags but you're ultimately left with the feeling of "why didn't I just watch a Marx Brothers movie?".  If we didn't have enough to talk about with this oddity we also discuss Damien Chazelle's Babylon featuring SNL alum Chloe Fineman in a small role.  It's one of our favorite films of 2022 that has an ending that left us both stumped.  Enjoy!Full archive of all podcast episodes available at saturdaynightjive.blogspot.comEmail us anything at saturdaynightjivepodcast@gmail.comDownload Here

'Twas then that I wished that I was dead and Columbo could go to sea no more."Last Salute to the Commodore" was the sixth episode of Columbo's fifth season, which aired on May 2, 1976. Starring Peter Falk, Columbo is a crime drama series that follows the adventures of the ostensibly-bumbling, quietly-cunning Lieutenant Columbo. The formula is simple: The audience gets to see a too-clever-by-half killer attempt to get away with a crime, and then watch Columbo toy with — and ultimately bust — the murderer. It's great fun."Last Salute to the Commodore" was at one time conceived as a send-off to the series. Directed by Danger Man and The Prisoner star Patrick McGoohan, it's attracted a reputation as a baffling mess that somewhat randomly breaks the mold set by the series. It's all about In addition to Falk, it also stars The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'s Robert Vaughn, Wilfrid Hyde-White, John Dehner, Dennis Dugan, Diane Baker, Bruce Kirby, Joshua Brant, Susan Foster, Fred Draper, Rod McCary, and John Finnegan.Listen to Áine and Kevin meander around the mizzenmast with topics like pacing, Patrick McGoohan's career, and behind-the-scenes Mystery to Me drama.Follow us on the usual social media suspects:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd send your stenciled messages to mysterytomepodcast@gmail.com.Mystery to Me is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We continue season four, our season for the fans, with an examination of a film that neither of your co-curators had ever seen that is constantly brought to our attention as a film that must  be addressed in our efforts to chart a shared cinematic universe of the films of Adam Sandler: 2008's “You Don't Mess with the Zohan”Will this combination of the comedic sensibilities of Sandler, Smigel, and Apatow directed by Dennis Dugan prove too satirical to hold a place in the universe as we have cultivated it so far? The only way to answer that question is to settle in and listen as Devon and Sejohn willfully ignore the advice of the title and mess with the Zohan. Comments can be directed to AdamSandlerCinematicUniverse@gmail.com and don't forget to follow us on Twitter @TheASCU
