Estaremos a educar as crianças para serem corajosas e assertivas? As respostas são dadas neste episódio que junta a psicoterapeuta Ana Moniz e o comunicador Hugo van der Ding.REFERÊNCIAS E LINKS ÚTEISCarlo Strenger, «O medo da insignificância - Como dar sentido às nossas vidas no Século XXI» (Lua de Papel)Barbara Ehrenreich, «Smile or Die - How Positive Thinking Fooled America and the World» (Granta Books)Brenée Brown, «Daring Greatly - How Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead» (Avery)Susan David, «Emotional Agility: Get Unstuck, Embrace Change, and Thrive in Work and Life» (Penguin Life)David Dias Neto, «Psicoterapia - A Cura pelo Diálogo» (Edições Sílabo)Amy C. «Não há limites!»«É tudo uma questão de força de vontade.»«Pensa positivo e vais atrair coisas positivas.»«Acredita e vais conseguir.»«Não fiques triste, olha que ainda ficas deprimido.»Quantas vezes já ouvimos ou lemos estas frases? Autorize-se a ser menos positivo, a não estar sempre contente e a aceitar que falhou: afinal, isso, sim, é o que pode fazer evoluir.REFERÊNCIAS E LINKS ÚTEISCarlo Strenger, O medo da insignificância - Como dar sentido às nossas vidas no Século XXI (Lua de Papel, 2012)Barbara Ehrenreich, «Smile or Die - How Positive Thinking Fooled America and the World» (Granta Publications, 2021)Brent Brown, «Daring Greatly - How Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead» (Avery, 2015)Susan David, «Emotional Agility» (Avery, 2016)David Dias Neto, A Cura pelo Diálogo (Edições Sílabo, 2022)Amy C. She is a former researcher, physiotherapist and sponsored athlete, who now uses applied neuroscience and psychology to build high-functioning individuals, teams and organisations. The vehicle she uses is mental fitness, where she teaches practical "bite-sized" psychological exercises which help to shift mindsets and behaviours. Bek and Daniel Franco went deep in this conversation and just dived straight into it. They talked about Bek's feeling of not belonging to a community or group and feeling as though she was a fringe dweller. They also talked about the idea of being normal, what is considered normal, and who actually decides what is normal. Bek shares her thoughts on the realism of burnout, the negative mental health effects of working from home, how we can fill up our own cups by designing circuit breakers in our lives and much more about Psychological Fitness.Books  mentioned in this episode:Daring Greatly - How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead - By Brené BrownStolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention - By Johann HariLost Connections - Why You're Depressed and How to Find Hope - By Johann HariAtlas of the Heart - Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience - By Brené BrownA New Earth - Awakening to Your Life's Purpose - By Eckhart TolleThe Power of Now - A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment - By: Eckhart TolleWhere to find  Bek SmithLinkedInhttps://www.smithandwellness.com/Join the conversation on Synergy IQ LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram (@synergyiq) and please support other leaders by liking, subscribing and sharing this podcast. Access SynergyIQ Website to get to know more about us. Say hello to our host Daniel Franco on LinkedIn.

*A culture in which so many people believe they are not enough – not successful enough, thin enough, powerful enough, smart enough, extraordinary enough, or certain enough – is a “culture of scarcity”, Brown writes in Daring Greatly. *Preoccupied by what society perceives to be deficiencies, we find it a challenge to say “I am worthy.” And we find it difficult to take risks, social, emotional, and professional. *Yet accepting our vulnerability and viewing it as a strength – learning to “dare greatly,” or dare anything at all – is the only way we can become what we were meant to be. The Elegant Warrior is the podcast about elegance in all of its many forms. We're talking about our definitions of elegance and how we maintain it during times of trial. Everything is a negotiation. The exercise of give-and-take that you experience daily with yourself and with others can be one of your greatest tools for advocating for yourself. I'm joined today by Mori Taheripour, an expert negotiator and author who teaches Negotiation and Dispute Resolution at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. We discuss the power of negotiations and how they can help you become a better advocate for yourself. From negotiating with yourself when your alarm clock goes off in the morning to giving up your people-pleasing tendencies, join us today as we talk about meaningful ways that you can gain a greater perspective in your life and truly master the power of negotiations in your everyday life.   Today we discuss — Negotiating every day Negotiating simply means working through a problem and coming to a good solution. Negotiations are the problem-solving conversations and decisions we make with ourselves and others every day. When your negotiations lead you to give up on the things that matter most, you will begin to lose credibility with yourself and with others. Negotiations with yourself are just as, if not more, important than the negotiations you make with others. Overcome negative negotiating experiences by giving yourself credit for the times you do get it right. Negotiations don't have to be a complete and total win or loss situation — as long as you receive something that will serve you in the long run, it's a win.   How to give up your people-pleasing tendencies Nobody takes anything away from you, you only give it to them. People pleasers too often risk their own happiness to avoid conflict. No one is going to set your boundaries for you — it's up to you to define your limits. Taking personal responsibility for your behavior allows you to change when needed. Give yourself permission to take care of yourself first.   Gaining perspective to master negotiations Ask questions to understand the perspective of other people. An increased perspective allows you to give the gift of empathy. Being a better listener will give you the power to negotiate with more information. ‘I understand' does not have to mean ‘I agree,' but it can offer validation for both sides. Identify your vulnerabilities so that you can strengthen them and improve your negotiations.   Mori's book is Bring Yourself: How to Harness the Power of Connection to Negotiate Fearlessly Mori's book recommendation is Untamed, by Glennon Doyle Mori's song choice is “Just Fine,” by Mary J. First Draft Episode #210: Josh Gondelman Josh Gondelman, comedian, TV writer for shows like Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Desus and Mero, and debut author of memoir Nice Try: Stories of Best Intentions and Mixed Results, talks about coming up in comedy, fumbling his breakout moment with the viral Modern Seinfeld Twitter account, and learning that being a “nice” person isn’t the same as being a good person. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode In addition to Nice Try, you should also check out Josh’s standup specials: Dancing on a Weeknight (2019); Physical Whisper (from 2016); and Everything’s the Best! (2011). Nancy Kerrigan was the subject of one of the most bizarre crimes in all of sports (really worth watching The Price of Gold, an excellent 30 for 30 documentary about the Kerrigan-Harding incident), which was documented in the film I, Tonya, which Josh’s parents did not see out of loyalty to Kerrigan Early on Josh performed in the chorus of The Music Man We decide that literary humor is to comedy as Garrison Keillor is to Chris Rock Josh wrote a spec script for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Josh was contributing to places like McSweeny’s and New York magazine when he first moved to the city Josh co-founded the @SeinfeldToday Twitter account with his friend Jack P. Moore (playwright and sitcom writer for shows like Dear White People), which went viral and got him lots of professional opportunities Josh made an impression on Jim Gaffigan with a joke about the wisdom of the justice system in D2: The Mighty Ducks when he was getting his feet wet as a standup in New York City Josh talks about establishing authority as a standup onstage, which reminded me of Pete Holmes addressing how he looks (more like a youth pastor than a comedian) on his 2013 special, Nice Try, The Devil. You can see a great example of Josh doing something similar in his 2019 sets on Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Late Show with James Cordon. Josh also got advice and encouragement about this from fellow comedian Pete Lee. Josh got a big win when he was able to write for Billy on the Street, featuring Billy Eichner One of the notable segments from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver was an early one about net neutrality, with a bit at the end (which Josh credits to Geoffrey Haggerty, a comedy writer for shows like The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) calling for viewers to write in to the FCC. So many viewers wrote to the FCC that its system crashed, and the government investigated whether the onslaught of feedback was from actual citizens or a coordinated DDoS attack. Tim Carvell, head writer for The Daily Show who left with John Oliver to create Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Josh is now the producer and writer for Desus and Mero on Showtime. Before he wrote for them, he was a fan of Desus and Mero’s podcast, Boedga Boys, and their TV show, Desus & Mero, on VICELAND. Josh does pep talks on Twitter from time to time, and initially was approached to write a book based on that premise. But he resisted that idea because internet darling Jonny Sun (playwright, academic, and author and illustrator of Everyone’s a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too -- listen to Jonny Sun’s episode of First Draft here) had already illustrated the famous Twitter pep talks written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (actor, composer, and playwright of Hamilton and In the Heights) for the book, G’Morning, G’night!: Little Pep Talks For Me & You. I was reading Brené Brown’s Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead, at the same time as Josh’s memoir, which actually was a beneficial co-reading experience (FTR I also recommend Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are on audiobook! It’s read by Lauren Fortgang and she does a great job!) Josh was on a panel with journalist and author Liz Plank--whose most recent book, “For the Love of Men: A New Vision for Mindful Masculinity”, is on sale now!--about shifting concepts of masculinity Nikki Glaser, a comedian and radio host who Josh admires, gave him pivotal advice early in his career I want to hear from you! We've covered a few troubled relationships in the past, but few have been as troubling or downright horrific as the coupling between Thanos and Mistress Death. Covering such an unhealthy alliance presents new challenges for the show, but thankfully we have Brene Brown's "Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead" to wade through the emotional horror. We kick off our April couple with the origin series "Thanos Rising" by Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi. These five issues are a dark True Crime take on the universe's most feared villain and his obsessive courtship with the personification of Death. Taking Action and Setting Big Goals in Running and Life!

The beginning of the year is definitely a great time to set aside space for self reflection, both on the year gone by and the year stretching ahead. This can help you stay the course or correct your course. In this episode we want to offer you two simple but powerful tips for making 2019 an epic year. Plus, we are going to be sharing a lot of books with you. So get ready to channel your inner student! Making 2019 an Epic Year The way that you best achieve goals is going to depend on your personality and how you respond to expectations. A couple books that I highly recommend when it comes to setting goals are Better Than Before and The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin. Having an understanding of what makes you tick will enable you to make the most progress in your life.Take Daily Action The fact is that you can set all the goals you want but to actually carry them out you have to take daily action. It’s not enough to dream that a future version of yourself is more disciplined or virtuous. The things you do today are making your future self. So start today with your goals. Maybe this is the year that you’re going to build back your running base, train for your first half marathon, your first marathon, your first ultra, train for a PR, or make changes in your eating. Whatever the goals you have to be very clear about what you want and what it will take to get there. If it’s helpful you can enter these daily action steps on your calendar so you have constant reminders and can get the satisfaction of checking them off. Part of taking action involves getting the support you need. Most people do best when they are surrounded by an encouraging support system. Maybe that means a friend, family member, online group, journaling, or an app. The bottom line is that you don’t have to go it alone. Maybe you’ve been interested in or on the fence about Academy membership. Our goal is to have your back. To be positive, encouraging, and help you make your running goals a reality.Set Bigger Goals If you’ve just started to run the thought of running a marathon is going to seem overwhelming. It can even seem overwhelming even when you’re in the midst of marathon training. But as you take daily action you will grow as a person and will be able to set bigger goals. This will give you an increased sense of confidence which will lead to more growth. Part of the process of setting bigger goals involves not being afraid to fail. Many of us fall into the perfection trap and tend to avoid committing to anything that we’re not sure we can accomplish and avoid things that might make us look foolish. But if you truly have the desire to do something, don’t let the fear of failure hold you back. Former Navy Seal Brad McLeod says this, “Don’t be afraid to fail. Without failure you won’t know your limit. And it is impossible to win every day. You may even feel like you are regressing at times. This is where you have to fight through.” Failure doesn’t have to have such a negative stigma. In fact, if we never failed we’d be completely perfect (and I’ve never met a perfect human). Fear is one of those tricky emotions that needs to be examined before it’s acted upon. Finally, having a growth mindset doesn’t mean that you’re constantly dissatisfied with where you are in life or with what you’ve accomplished. It’s also not helpful to be constantly comparing yourself with other people, which is often what social media draws our attention to. Often we’re comparing our worst with someone else’s best. Sometimes the running world can leave you with the impression that you’re not fast enough, you don’t have enough endurance, you’re not thin enough, or you’re not making progress quickly enough. I’ve thought all those things too. But feeling like you’re not enough doesn’t actually lead you into a positive space for growth. It leaves us stuck and discouraged which saps our energy. As we continue into this year I’d encourage you to do it with the mindset that you are enough. This will lead to more progress as you take action and set bigger goals. Knowing that you are enough will give your efforts a sense of positive energy. My Goals for 2019 To write a daily gratitude list. Increase to 20 minutes of daily meditation. Spend more one on one time with my boys. Run a sub 4 marathon. Run a marathon in 3 new states. Consistently strength train 2-3 times per week. Continue reading good books. And speaking of books . . . Books I Enjoyed Last Year I read a total of 263 books in 2018 (more non-fiction than fiction which was a first for me). Here are my top 7 favorite non-fiction books from last year: Daring Greatly, How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the way we Live, Love, Parent and Lead by Brene Brown (I also highly recommend her books Rising Strong, Daring Greatly, and Dare to Lead). She talks about vulnerability, whole heartedness, shame, and courage. The fear of vulnerability is at the core of many of our difficult emotions. She writes, “When we shut ourselves off from vulnerability, we distance ourselves from the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives.” Her message calls us to dare greatly and strive for whole heartedness in our lives. Get Well Soon, History’s Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them by Jennifer Wright. As a nurse I’m fascinated by the history of diseases, epidemics, and medical practices of the past. This book is a great blend of history, storytelling, some very gruesome practices, and humor. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. This is the autobiographical tale of Bill Bryson who after living in the UK for many years returns to the US and decides to hike the Appalachian Trail with a good friend from the past. He’s an amazing storyteller and dives into the history of the Trail along with his preparation and experiences alongside it. I just recently learned that it was made into a movie that was released in 2015. The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. This book tells the story of the 1936 US men’s Olympic 8 person rowing team. These were just ordinary young men after the Great Depression from poor backgrounds that were transformed into a force to be reckoned with. They went on to defeat the elite Eastern rowing clubs and compete in the 1936 Olympics in front of Adolf Hitler, defeating Germany’s Aryan team. Snoop: What Your Stuff Says About You by Sam Gossling. This is written by a psychologist who studies how people project and protect their inner selves by looking at their belongings. He can predict with uncanny accuracy so many things by looking at people’s stuff. There’s a lot of interesting research, psychology and stories packed into this book. Let Your Mind Run by Deena Kastor. Deena does an amazing job of weaving her personal story of training and growth along with inspiration for the reader. There is so much about mental toughness and mindset that can be gleaned from this book. Endure by Alex Hutchinson. This books explores the variable limits of the human body and mind where it relates to human performance, particularly long distance running.More Books Mentioned in This Episode North: Finding My Way While Running the Appalachian Trail by Scot Jurek Run Strong Stay Hungry: 9 Keys to Staying in the Race by Jonathan Beverly Run for Your Life by Dr. Mark Cucuzzella Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt A History of Canada in Ten Maps: Epic Stories of Charting a Mysterious Land by Adam Shoalts Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike by Charlotte GrayAlso Mentioned in This Episode Generation UCAN, our go-to fueling source for long runs and races. What do you do when marriage isn't forever?  What do you do when staying becomes unsafe?  My friend and guest, "Joan" shares her story about leaving a destructive marriage for her own safety.  She opens up about her experience of God and the body of Christ as she wrestled with how to love God and walk a path she never thought she would be walking.  With vulnerability, compassion, and authenticity, Joan shares her story of a God who revealed Himself to be bigger than the box she thought He fit in.   Due to the sensitivity of this particular story, Joan is not my guest's real name.  She has requested it to be withheld for safety reasons.  Although her real name will not be published, Joan has compassionately made herself available to connect with if you find yourself resonating with aspects of the journey she walked on.  You may contact me at tearsofgold16@gmail.com and I will facilitate a connection as appropriate.   Resources Mentioned: The Emotionally Destructive Marriage: How to Find Your Voice and Reclaim Your Hope by Leslie Vernick Codependents Anonymous group Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead by Brene Brown Online course by Brene Brown (courses are no longer available as of December 2017, but you can explore her website for other content) Codependent No More : How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself by Melody Beattie   Follow Tears of Gold: IG: tearsofgold16 FB: Tears of Gold :: Stories of Hope E: tearsofgold16@gmail.com

Episode Summary:  Valerie is a Certified Professional Coach and Empowerment Mentor, Loving Mom and Wife, and Founder of TheUnlimitedMom.com. Not long ago Valerie was one of the many Moms struggling with feeling overwhelmed, out of balance, and guilty for wanting more. Through making a decision to do something different, the support of her own coach, and learning the skills of coaching and energy leadership, she tapped into her purpose, increased her energy, and is actively creating a life she loves. Valerie is dedicated to helping other Moms achieve the serenity, joy, and fulfillment they seek. She enjoys working with passionate women who are ready to ditch the limits of “this is as good as it gets” and step into creating their own unique, authentic, and amazing Mom-life. Valerie believes you deserve to live a vibrant life and that by doing so, you are setting the foundation for the happy and healthy life that you want for your child. Her mission is to help you do just that.  Guilt is a topic that tends to come up all the time among high-achieving moms and dads, especially these days when work is more demanding than ever and the standards of “good parenting” are as high as they’ve ever been.  I’ve heard so many people say that there’s no way to avoid guilt as a working parent, or even as a parent in general.  I don’t necessarily disagree with that – we all have our moments where we make mistakes or do something that we’re not particularly proud of.  But I think the guilt has gotten out of control, and I hope today’s episode has helped you release at least a little of that unnecessary guilt.  You work hard.  You’re a great parent.  I can guarantee you’re doing the best you can on any given day, so I hope something you hear here today resonates so you can start to treat yourself with a little more kindness.
