Some time ago, we discussed Guido de Bres and the doctrinal statements known as the Three Forms of Unity used by Reformed churches. However, there is another set of documents used by Presbyterian churches everywhere, known as The Westminster Standards, which includes The Confession of Faith and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms. These documents were written in the seventeenth century by a group of English and Scottish pastors who met for ten years during one of the most challenging times in British history. But how could a meeting last ten years? How did these pastors live, and how did their families live without them during a time of war? Join Emma, Trinity, and Sean as they pose these questions and others to Dr. Chad Van Dixhoorn, a leading authority on this subject. Thanks to the generosity of our friends at Reformation Heritage Books, we are excited to offer a bundle of Simonetta Carr's books to two listeners! The winner will be selected just in time for Christmas. What does life insurance really cover besides the obvious? It's much more than just a payout when you die. Brian and Hans break down the three types of "deaths" protected by life insurance—physical, disability, and retirement—and discuss why it's crucial to safeguard your income at all life stages. Investing in yourself, preparing for unexpected disabilities, and fulfilling moral responsibilities through adequate coverage aren't just smart moves—they're essential.  Recognize All Forms of Economic Risk: Life insurance protects against three types of economic "death": physical death, disability death (loss of income due to becoming disabled), and retirement death (loss of income upon retirement). It can protect your income at all stages. Invest in Yourself First: Your ability to earn money is your most valuable asset. Taking care of your health, building your skills, and advancing your career are all ways to make sure you keep that income flowing. Prepare for the Unseen: The likelihood of disability affecting one's ability to earn is higher than premature death. It's important to have an insurance plan that covers all scenarios.   Insurance is More Than Just Money: It's about looking out for your family's future. Whole life insurance ensures your income provides for them regardless of your earning capability while providing a host of living benefits in the meantime. Got Questions? In this episode, we delve into the intricacies of film finance, a critical yet often underappreciated facet of the movie-making process. Our journey begins with "True Hollywood Stories," where we uncover real-life anecdotes that reveal the strategic selection of finance methods, navigate the legal terrain of investor financing, and offer sage advice to independent producers on securing funds. As the reel unwinds, we explore the impact of Securities Law Enforcement on the silver screen's financial scaffolding. Filmmakers must be vigilant of the legalities when courting investments, and our discussion illuminates these crucial considerations. The narrative then transitions to an "Overview of Film Finance," where we dissect the various financing models trending in the industry. Each model carries its own risk-reward profile, and understanding these nuances is key for filmmakers looking to fund their next project."Pre-Offering Considerations" takes center stage as we highlight the preparatory steps essential before any deal is inked. These considerations are not just formalities; they are the bedrock of a sound financial strategy in film production. In "Fitting Investor Financing into a Film Finance Plan," the conversation shifts to the art of aligning investor expectations with the stark financial realities of filmmaking. Striking this balance is both an art and a science, and we provide insights into navigating this complex dance. The spotlight then shines on the role of a Business Plan or Securities Disclosure Document, as discussed in Chapter 6. This document is more than mere paperwork; it's a filmmaker's pitch to potential investors, and we discuss how to craft it compellingly.Documentation is the unsung hero of film finance, and in breaking down the "Three Forms of Documentation for Film Financiers," we reveal the significance of each in the broader context of securing funding."Contingent Promissory Notes as a Film Finance Method" introduces a unique approach to film financing. We examine how these instruments operate and what distinguishes them from traditional funding avenues. The intricacies of the SEC's Regulation D, including Rule 506(b) and Rule 506(c) Exemptions, are decoded to clarify their implications for filmmakers. These regulations can be a labyrinth, but understanding them is crucial for legally securing investment."The Federal Equity Crowdfunding Law" has rewritten the script for film financing, presenting new opportunities for independent filmmakers. We analyze how this law has transformed the landscape and the doors it has opened for creative projects. Finally, we spotlight "Investor Tax Incentives" and their magnetic pull in attracting investment. These incentives are not just perks; they're powerful tools that, when leveraged effectively, can bring a film from storyboard to screen.Join us as we navigate the financial undercurrents of film production, providing filmmakers with the knowledge to turn their cinematic visions into reality.https://www.filmfinanceattorney.comBuy the book here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/386497002892?chn=ps&_ul=GB&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=386497002892&targetid=885285326120&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9045981&poi=&campaignid=10215174691&mkgroupid=101743826123&rlsatarget=pla-885285326120&abcId=1063846&merchantid=137623468&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2ZyL4sOtgwMVWJNQBh3WbwCNEAQYAyABEgL28fD_BwEContact John for any other information or a discount here: Email: jwc6774@gmail.comAlso, you can check out my documentary The People of Brixton, on Kwelitv here: The People of Brixton Damien Swaby Social Media Links:Instagram:InstagramTwitter:twitterWebsite: http://filmmakingconversations.com/If you enjoy listening to Filmmaking Conversations with Damien Swaby, I would love a coffee. The Belgic Confession (1561) is one of the Three Forms of Unity (including the Heidelberg Catechism and the Canons of Dort) and is the confession of the Reformed churches. It was written by Guy de Bres (1522–67), a minister of the Reformed churches in French-speaking churches in the southern Netherlands. The earliest sources tell us that these articles were originally sermons and the guide for those sermons was probably the French Reformed Confession (1559). The Confession has a strongly pastoral quality and is an excellent devotional guide. The Heidelberg Reformation Association is pleased to present this audio version of the Belgic Confession. It is just over 1 hour in length. It is suitable for helping you and your children to learn the confession or to refresh your memory of the confession. ©Heidelberg Reformation Association. What is the Heidelberg Catechism, and why was it included in The Three Forms of Unity?   How does the Heidelberg Catechism reflect the theological beliefs of the Reformed tradition, particularly with regard to the nature of salvation and the role of faith?   What was the historical context in which the Heidelberg Catechism was written, and how did this context shape its contents?   How does the Heidelberg Catechism differ from other Protestant catechisms, particularly those of the Lutheran tradition, in terms of its theological emphases?   What is the significance of the Heidelberg Catechism for modern Reformed theology, and how does it continue to shape Reformed understanding of salvation and faith?   The Canons of Dort (1619)   What are the Canons of Dort, and why were they included in The Three Forms of Unity? A direct response to the Five Remonstrant Articles of 1610, set forth by the followers of Jacob Arminius. - Conditional election, universal atonement, a modified understanding of depravity, and the resistibility of grace, along with an article that questioned perseverance.   How do the Canons of Dort reflect the theological beliefs of the Reformed tradition, particularly with regard to the doctrine of predestination and the nature of sin and grace? The Canons of Dordt responded by asserting total depravity, unconditional election, particular redemption (“limited atonement”), irresistible grace, and the perseverance of the saints.   “The Canons were thus not intended as anything approaching a comprehensive statement of Christian doctrine.” What was the historical context in which the Canons of Dort were written, and how did this context shape their contents?   How do the Canons of Dort differ from other Protestant confessions, particularly those of the Lutheran tradition, in terms of their theological emphases?   What is the significance of the Canons of Dort for modern Reformed theology, and how do they continue to shape Reformed understanding of predestination and grace? “Anybody who thinks that Protestant confessionalism is a hard, dry creed needs to read the Heidelberg Catechism. Only the willfully stupid or deluded could possibly dismiss such a document.” The Westminster Standards. The Westminster Standards is a collective name for the documents drawn up by the Westminster Assembly (1643–49). These include the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Westminster Shorter Catechism, the Westminster Larger Catechism, the Directory of Public Worship, and the Form of Church Government,[1] and represent the doctrine and church polity of 17th-century English and Scottish Presbyterianism. The Westminster Confession of Faith and Larger and Shorter Catechism have been adopted as doctrinal standards by a number of Reformed and Presbyterian Christian denominations, but not the Church of Scotland nor those derived directly from it. What are the Westminster Standards, and why were they written? The standards indicate that the authors were men of acute pastoral insight.   How do the Westminster Standards reflect the theological beliefs of the Protestant Reformation, particularly those of the Presbyterian tradition? Westminster has a much stricter view of the fourth commandment when compared to the Heidelberg Catechism.   In what ways do the Westminster Standards demonstrate the importance of theological precision and the use of creeds in the modern church?   What is the structure of the Westminster Standards, and how does this structure contribute to their usefulness as a confessional document?   The Westminster Confession of Faith: gard to the doctrine of God and the nature of salvation?   --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/biblebulldog/message

The gnostics present a more nuanced perspective on this issue, in that immortality is not guaranteed, but must be earned through precise methods. Trimorphic Protennoia - Three Forms of the First Thought - Nag Hammadi Gnostic Audiobook with Text. The Trimorphic Protennoia is a Sethian Gnostic text from the New Testament apocrypha. The only surviving copy comes from the Nag Hammadi library (Codex XIII). The name of the text means The First Thought which is in Three Forms (or The Three Forms of the First Thought), and appears to have been rewritten at some point to incorporate Sethian beliefs, when originally it was a treatise from another Gnostic sect. Unusually, the text is in the form of an explanation of the nature of cosmology, creation, and a docetic view of Jesus, in the first person. That is, the text is written as if the writer is God, the three-fold first thought. Like most Gnostic writing, the text is extremely mystical, more so for being in the first person. The Christian walk is one that can only be done through obedience by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is not an easy one and to be honest, we fail daily. Part of our failure is due to ignorance. We believe ourselves to be in the right relationship with God due to negligent teaching from the pulpit. The other part is due to our lack of love to the God who first loved us. We may have accumulated knowledge and equate that with loving God. However, knowledge of someone is not the same as love to that person. In fact, our pursuit of knowledge for knowledge's sake can become an idol. We must this day choose whom we will serve; ourselves or God. I want to invite you to join me as we look at scripture and other Christian works to see how we can apply them to our daily lives in devotion to Christ. In this launch episode, you will get to know me, my journey through theology, and how I arrived at the Reformed position. As well as the purpose of this podcast. It is my hope that this podcast will be edifying to you. Recommended books that will be referenced in this podcast: (Your preferred translation). Valley of Vision. Jesus on Divorce – Matthew 5:31-32

The Four Challenges of Matthew 5:31-32Scripture appears to be inconsistentThe meaning of the word used for sexual immorality is unclearOur cultural understanding of love, marriage, and therefore divorce is not the same as the biblical understanding of these concepts. Divorce and remarriage questions are about real people. We are living in an easy divorce culture. Sermon on the Mount Series RemindersThe Sermon on the Mount is not an isolated speech. Rather the sermon is an exemplification or personification of Jesus' life. The whole sermon is Christ describing what life in the kingdom and allegiance to Him looks like.Obedience to the Sermon on the Mount is a practice of imagination. “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' – Matthew 5:311 If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, 2 and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, 3 and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, 4 then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the Lord. Do not bring sin upon the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. – Deuteronomy 24:1-4Firstly, we need to understand this is legislation not a command. Secondly, Moses is actually putting together a set of laws or rules to govern divorce in protection of marginalized women. “But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the grounds of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” – Matthew 5:32Two Schools of Thought: School of Shammai: You can divorce on the basis of moral grounds being violatedSchool of Hillel: You can divorce for any reason at allOptions for 1st divorced woman: Live with a relativeRemarry Prostitution And Jesus firmly sides with the school of Shammai, the side of the weak and marginalized woman in the same spirit as Moses, coming not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. Three Forms of Response: For those of you who have embraced an easy divorce culture, it is time to rethink your view and understanding of marriage and divorce. For those of you in this room who have been divorced and/or remarried, Jesus sides with the marginalized and is also quick to forgive. For those of you who maybe grew up in church, we must rethink or repent for the assumptions, indifference, or harshness we've displayed toward divorced individuals.

It might be exercise, or spending time outside, or laughing. Make these things non-negotiable as part of your day. Need to make room for them? Drop other things, but never the non-negotiable things that bring you joy.[22:54] - The Three Forms of AwarenessAwareness of Self, Awareness of Others, Awareness of SituationIntrinsic motivation doesn't require someone else telling you to work hard— it comes from awareness of self, awareness of others, and awareness of your situation. When you know what you're capable of, what others need from you, and where you stand (and where you need to be), you can accomplish anything.[31:12] - The Power and Limits of PassionHow do you turn passion into playmaking?Jay is passionate about hip hop, but that doesn't mean he could get into a recording booth and drop a Grammy-winning rap album. So how do we know our passions could turn into careers? The simple answer is that we don't. All we can do is choose a path and give it 110% and see where we end up.[35:25] - The Go-To Daily PurposeMake your purpose other peopleWhen you wake up in the morning and for whatever reason you don't feel like you have a strong sense of purpose, what do you do? For Jay, he defaults to helping others. There are always people that need help, and by the end of an act of service you'll almost always have re-centered yourself on what matters most to you.[49:04] - The Big SecretMost people actually want you to succeedPeople who succeed love to talk about the ‘haters' that wanted to see them fail. Can Reformed Women be Ordained Deacons? | Show Notes Are ordained Deaconesses compatible with historic Christian orthodoxy? Complementarians insist not, egalitarians insist, yes! A recently published book, by Medieval Historian and Baptist egalitarian, Beth Allison Barr claims that women were most definitely ordained as deacons and that patriarchalist church leaders today are unjustly barring women from being ordained. Join me, Kerry Baldwin, with Deaconess Melissa DeGroot, as we dare to think about the ordination of Women Deacons. Guest: Melissa DeGroot, Deaconess, LCMS (Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod Melissa DeGroot is a certified and consecrated deaconess in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. She studied Theology at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN. She served at the seminary in recruitment and formation, then later with the Synod as a Writer/Researcher for the LCMS Deaconess Department based out of St. Louis, MO. She has been a contributor to blogs: He Remembers The Barren and The Lutheran Witness. She was a weekly guest on KFUO radio's bible study segment. DeGroot has also written articles pertaining to theology, women's roles and the vocation of Deaconess in The Lutheran Witness, Higher Things Magazine, and For The Life of The World. She has also written and contributed to two books, He Remembers the Barren (both editions) by Katie Schuermann, and Never Forsaken: God's Mercy in the Midst of Miscarriage by Dcs. Kathryn Ziegler. Melissa currently resides in Rio Rancho, New Mexico with her husband, son and dog, and has recently tried her hand at putting up shiplap. While DIY-ing has seemingly taken over her life, she prefers reading, hiking and cooking. And good conversation! There is an argument that says, “A woman can do everything a non-ordained man can do.” The problem with that is that we are Baptists and have no theology of ordination whatsoever. For that reason, we have to understand that the pastoral office and pastoral function are the same thing." - Al Mohler, 10 Points of Complementarianism Three strains of Reformed and Presbyterian Confessions The Dutch Reformed hold the “Three Forms of Unity” (3FU) which encompass the Belgic Confession (1561), The Heidelberg Catechism (1563), and the Canons of Dort (1619). The Swiss Reformed have the Second Helvetic Confession (1566). The Scottish Presbyterians hold to the Westminster Confessions - WCF (1647) and Shorter (1647) and Larger (1648) Catechisms. The Westminster Confession also has a revised American version (1788) which denounced Establishmentarianism (the idea that the church should run the civil government). Later, in 1689, came the London Baptist Confession, which is essentially a Baptist version of the Westminster. NOTE: There is/was a “new” strain of “Reformed” theology that became popular through John Piper, John MacArthur, and others. Piper later dubbed this “New Calvinism.” I and many other Calvinist/Presbyterians reject this “New Calvinism” as not being Reformed. So we distinguish ourselves as "Old School" Presbyterians. Another term that shouldn't be confused with “New Calvinism” is “neocalvinism” which was a historical resurgence of the Dutch Reformed tradition through Abraham Kuyper. John Piper is responsible for both “New Calvinism” (2014) and the Danver's Statement (1987) and the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (1988). His “12 Points of New Calvinism” has “Complementarianism” as a cornerstone tenant, among other tenants I find questionable. Today Danny Hyde takes us to school on the gloriousness that is the Belgic Confession. Listen in as we ask discuss: 1. Can you give us a quick intro on what this thing is and why it should matter to a busy mom in 2021? 2. What groups or denominations use the Belgic Confession? 3. How does one use the Belgic Confession in their daily lives and what would a life marked by its usage look like? 4. How does the Belgic Confession compare with the Westminster Confession, and why didn't the Westminster divines just use the Belgic, and why do North Americans chiefly use the Westminster over the Belgic? 5. Do you have, or have you ever met someone who has, any Belgic Confession tattoos? 6. Weren't their Confessions before the Belgic, if so, what was wrong with those ones? Was author Guido de Bres just reinventing the wheel? 7. What was the desired function of the Belgic Confession: was it apologetic, was it to highlight differences, was it to notate conformity or specific truths? etc. 8. Article 1 says “We all believe with the heart, and confess with the mouth, that there is one only simple and spiritual Being, which we call God; and that he is eternal, incomprehensible, invisible, immutable, infinite, almighty, perfectly wise, just, good, and the overflowing fountain of all good.” When it says “We believe…” Who is Guido de Bres, the author, speaking for when says “we”? Was he sanctioned or commissioned, or did he just rise to the occasion? 9. When did it get officially adopted and sanctioned to be used beyond just the initial purpose? 10. The Belgic is broken into 37 "articles” what's an article? If we were to print this thing out, about how many pages would it be? 11. What is the tone, the heart and vibe of the Belgic Confession? 12. How has the Belgic Confession been used throughout history? How can it best be used now? And are there any versions that you suggest? 13. Where is it dated or a product of its time? And what are we to make of the Belgic Confession's usage of a 1 John text that is not in any modern translations (and is probably not part of the autograph). that is, how does one subscribe with issues with the proof texts? 14. Must we memorize the Belgic Confession? Why not Proverbs or the Gospels before? 15. The use of confessions of faith is a common practice among reformed churches. Dutch Reformed Churches use the Three Forms of Unity, Presbyterians have the Westminster Confession of Faith, and Reformed Baptists hold to the 2nd London Confession of Faith of 1677-89 -2LCF-. Typically, the broader evangelical churches have statements of faith but tend to stay away from the doctrinally and practically rich confessions from the seventeenth century. --To learn more, listen to this video and the accompanying blog post on our website, https---www.freegrace.ca-why-does-our-church-use-a-confession-of-faith-

In this peri-Covid-19 world we are experiencing right now, it seems like the world is full of provocateurs provoking the fears, the prejudices, the insecurities and pet peeves of everyone.   It is so easy to fall into the trap of reacting to the machinations of the provocateurs and doing exactly what they want you to do — to react with anger, to react with spite, to react with frustration, to react with meanness, to react with blaming and similar snide attitudes to those we don’t agree with.  Provocateurs know that stirring up trouble is easy and it’s easier if you can tap into the emotional reactionary sides of people based on fear, hate, or prejudice.  This is a time, like no other, when we must shut out the noise of the provocateurs and listen to that small voice of God, the Divine, of Source calling within us and step into fully and joyfully being a vocateur — someone completely living out their vocation and allowing their spark of the Divine to brightly shine as they do so.  Each and everyone of us has a vocation, a calling from God, from source which is our soul's purpose in life. The provocateurs of this age want to dupe us into thinking whatever we do will never make a difference, that we don’t have a purpose.  We know, as light workers and those committed to shining the light of hope, the light of truth, the light of love in the cosmos that fulling living out our vocation is the way our unique spark of the Divine shines from and through us in the world lighting hope, truth, and love in the cosmos. I thought tonight we would imaginally pray with a few verses from the Nag Hammadi text Trimorphic Protennioia or Three Forms of First Thought to help us raise our frequencies to listening to that call from source and shutting out the racket of the provocateurs all around us.

Theology Gals | Episode 4 | What Does it Mean to be Reformed?

Theology Gals

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2017

A common question that's asked in the Theology Gals facebook group is, “What is Reformed?”  When someone asks this question, it is answered with a variety of descriptions. One reason why this happens is that the understanding of what it means has evolved in recent years, and now has a far broader definition than it once did. Historically, the adjective Reformed has had a specific definition. R Scott Clark explains, “I have argued that there is a stable, historic, definition of the adjective: God’s Word as confessed (theology, piety, and practice) by the Reformed churches. As a matter of history, there was no doubt as to what was meant by the qualifier Reformed from the mid-16th century until about the mid-20th century.” I would agree with Dr. Clark that there is a historic definition and I am in agreement with how he has defined it. There have been various confessions since the time of the reformation which have been considered Reformed; today the most commonly used are the Westminster Standards and The Three Forms of Unity. I haven't forgotten about the Reformed Baptists. With some research you'll find that Reformed Baptist is a fairly new label, and it too has evolved in recent years and is now used more broadly. Before Reformed Baptist was used, confessional calvinistic Baptists used to be known as Particular Baptists. Even when the term was initially more widely used, it had a similar definition to Reformed, but specifically referring to those who held to certain Baptist confessions. In recent years, many began to use it as synonymous with calvinistic Baptist, including the non-confessional ones. In this episode of Theology Gals, my co-host Ashley explains that even she wore the label Reformed before she really knew what it meant. Now she holds to the Reformed confessions, but she claimed the label before she really understood what those were. Because it's now so broadly used, it's caused confusion. In this video from Pastor Zach of Westside Reformed Church, he explains the confusion this has caused.  He uses a couple of examples to make the point, for instance, can a person who believes in baptism call himself a Baptist even though he believes in baptizing the babies of believers? Can't one just use Baptist the way they want to use it? I'm sure a Baptist would say, “That's not how it has historically been understood.”  If I started calling myself a Baptist, that would cause confusion. Pastor Zach continues to explain that it would also cause confusion if someone like me, a Presbyterian, started calling myself a Lutheran just because I believe in justification by faith alone. I'm sure my Lutheran brothers would take issue with that, as I don't hold to their confessions and even disagree with them on several points. Some people have argued, “Why can't we just label ourselves Christians? Why do we need all these other labels?” Labels can be helpful. With various theological camps, Reformed distinguishes us from other theological systems. If I move somewhere and am looking for a new church, I'm going to want to attend one with like-minded believers who hold to the same confessions, and the same ecclesiology. I'm going to want to look for a Reformed or Presbyterian Church. And if a church describes itself as Reformed, I will have some expectations of what being a Reformed church means. I've put together several resources to go along with our podcast on what it means to be Reformed. We discuss the historical understanding, but also how it's used more broadly by many today, and why that's happened. R Scott Clark on the Necessity Of An Objective Definition Of Reformed. Here he describes some of the history of the adjective. A Wonderful Illustration Of The Necessity Of An Objective Definition Of Reformed by R Scott Clark In this short video which is part one on a series on the history of the United Reformed Church,

Creeds are usually worded to be easily memorized. The word creed comes from the Latin word credo, meaning, "I believe." The Bible contains a number of creed-like passages. For example, Jews used the Shema, based on Deuteronomy 6:4-9, as a creed. Paul wrote simple creed-like statements in 1 Corinthians 8:6; 12:3 and 15:3-4. 1 Timothy 3:16 also appears as a creed, a concise statement of belief https://www.gci.org/history/creeds “God’s Word as confessed (theology, piety, and practice) by the Reformed churches.” R. Scott Clark Regarding the reformed confessions: “These are the ecclesiastical summaries of the Christian faith in the Reformed tradition. In these documents, the churches expressed their official interpretation of God’s Word on those things they considered most essential. This is how the churches intend for you to learn theology (doctrine), piety (prayer, worship), and practice (the Christian life). Start with the Heidelberg Catechism (1563), the Belgic Confession (1561), and the Canons of Dort (1619). See also the Westminster Confession (1648), the Westminster Shorter Catechism (1648), and the Westminster Larger Catechism (1648).” https://heidelblog.net/2016/11/resources-for-those-discovering-the-reformed-confession/ (This link offers resources on discovering the reformed confessions.) “The Latin slogan sola scriptura means “by Scripture alone,” not “Scripture alone” (solo scriptura)5 For example, both Lutheran and Reformed churches regard the ecumenical creeds, along with their own confessions and catechisms, as authoritative and binding summaries of Scripture, to which they are all subordinate” - Michael Horton, The Christian Faith “As Reformed Christians, we profess to believe that the confessions (for me, the Three Forms of Unity equally with the Westminster Standards) are a faithful summary and interpretation of the main tenets of the Word of God. The confessions are our roadmaps for the sometimes rugged biblical terrain. If so, we should never shelve the confessions as an obstacle to unity or evangelism or whatever we want to do without those pesky old documents getting in our way–all of these things are both ‘doctrinal’ and ‘practical’ issues. “Maybe one good way to avoid noncofessionalism among the contemporary Reformed is to cultivate an appreciation for the theology of the confessions as they relate the historic Reformed understanding of Scripture to what we actually- individually- believe. For one thing, the confessions are consensus documents agreed upon by the Church, yes, but they are my confession of faith, too. They don’t contain everything I believe to be contained in the Christian faith, and of course they’re not perfect (they aren’t Scripture itself), but they hit all of the most important things dead on, and in a powerful and engaging way, and they call upon us to do the same…which is one of their most important functions.Another function, as John Webster suggests above, is that when we personally and as a community affirm the confessions, we testify clearly to the redeeming work in history which God has accomplished in Christ and applies to us by the Holy Spirit. By confessing we claim that this basic biblical content, summarized faithfully but not perfectly by this Spirit-led community on our pilgrim journey, answers the questions, “What must I believe to be saved? What is my proper response to so great a salvation?” It is our communal (covenantal) ‘answering back’ after God calls us to himself in Christ by the same Word that we confess in summary in the confessions. It is also our clear and united testimony before a watching world, and within a Church badly in need of biblical and theolog...

Bureaucracy. What is it? Who is it for? How does it work and what are the limits of it? Join us for this episode as we explore Max Weber's ideal-type bureaucracy and attempt to make sense of its, sometimes peculiar, implications. In order to do so we have read two Chapters from his magnum opus - Economy and Society. Chapter 3 on Three Forms of Legitimate Domination, where he outlines his view on bureaucracy for the first time; and Chapter 11 on Bureaucracy, where he goes into more detail on how bureaucracy ought to work, why it is superior to preceding forms of organization and what are the characteristics of it.
