Families have been fleeing to Illinois to protect their transgender and non-binary children from anti-trans laws and enroll them in more inclusive schools. The Supreme Court agreed to review one law this week that restricts gender-affirming care. But many of the laws on the books directly relate to school policy. Across the nation, many educators are fighting back and confronting these school policies. A new book is hoping to give teachers a guide to create more inclusive classrooms – no matter the laws in their state. It's called “The Advocate Educator's Handbook.” To hear more, Reset sat down with the co-authors Rebecca Kling, a nationally known trans advocate based in Chicago, and Vanessa Ford, a former educator and a parent to a trans child. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.
Transgender and non-binary students often do not find inclusive experiences in schools and many teachers do not know where to turn in finding resources and supports. Scott Lee shares a conversation with Vanessa Ford and Rebecca Kling who discuss their book The Advocate Educator's Handbook: Creating Schools Where Transgender and Non-Binary Students Thrive who discuss issues surrounding supporting students who are struggling with gender inclusion.
Vanessa Ford is an extraordinary individual in every possible way. It's as though she's the real life version of Super Sema, the animated superhero she created that is changing the world. Super Sema is the first African animated superhero franchise to inspire the next generation of children to change the world through curiosity, creativity, and STEAM skills. The wildly successful animated series is watched by millions of young black boys and girls around the globe whose parents and grandparents grew up without seeing anyone who looked like them on TV, and certainly not in cartoon superhero form. With the backing of Serena and Venus Williams and Oprah Winfrey, the experience of being a young woman of colour working in the entertainment industry directly for Harvey Weinstein, and a drive to reclaim her power and help everyone else do the same, Vanessa Ford is a remarkable and fascinating leader, changing the world for good. Authors JR and Vanessa Ford read the one book they could find about transgender kids to their child but skipped over the word 'transgender.' When they finally used the word, their child felt empowered by finding the right language to describe themselves. So the Fords set out to help more families with their children's book, Calvin. JR and Vanessa Ford told NPR's Audie Cornish that they are still learning as they go.
It's hard enough to raise a child in this complicated and confusing world but what do you do if your child is struggling with their sexual or gender identity? In this episode we are talking about those kids who are struggling with their gender identity. Not only do you have to help your child navigate a new normal for themselves, you also have to learn a new language. New pronouns like they/them and terms like gender non-conforming, non-binary and/or gender-queer (I've put the definitions below from gladd.org). How do you support and affirm your child? How do you get your head around your child's gender identity if you don't agree or if it goes against your beliefs? There are so many complicated issues that come up and you will need support! Enter my guests, JR and Vanessa Ford who are parents to two kids, one of whom identifies as non-binary. In fact, their child, Ellie, who was born as a boy, was so insistent, persistent, and consistent in telling their parents that they weren't a boy, they had to sit up and pay attention. Vanessa and JR are sharing their journey with Ellie to help educate people on the LGBTQ+ community and also to advocate for more rights for Transgender youth. In this episode, we talk about: What does it mean to be Transgender? How do you know if this is just a phase for your child? Consistent, insistent and persistent... What the journey of a Trans person can be like ...it's an evolution How popular culture is portraying more Transgender people Gender non-conforming A term used to describe some people whose gender expression is different from conventional expectations of masculinity and femininity. Please note that not all gender non-conforming people identify as transgender; nor are all transgender people gender non-conforming. Many people have gender expressions that are not entirely conventional – that fact alone does not make them transgender. Many transgender men and women have gender expressions that are conventionally masculine or feminine. Simply being transgender does not make someone gender non-conforming. The term is not a synonym for transgender or transsexual and should only be used if someone self-identifies as gender non-conforming. Non-binary and/or genderqueer Terms used by some people who experience their gender identity and/or gender expression as falling outside the categories of man and woman. They may define their gender as falling somewhere in between man and woman, or they may define it as wholly different from these terms. The term is not a synonym for transgender or transsexual and should only be used if someone self-identifies as non-binary and/or genderqueer. for a guide of
This week on Under the Radar: It's Transgender Awareness Week, which is a time to reflect on issues facing the trans community, including representation in media. One space that is becoming more inclusive? Children's literature. There is a growing catalog of books that center trans kids as main characters, and more stories that portray a range of experiences. Advocates want more trans authors and characters to be seen and heard. Guests: Kyle Lukoff, Stonewall-winning author of “When Aidan Became a Brother” and 2021 National Book Award finalist for the novel “Too Bright To See.” Vanessa Ford, co-author of "CALVIN," a children's book centered around a transgender boy, inspired in part by Ford's child. Ford is also a nationally known advocate for transgender youth rights. Katy Kania, head of teen services at Robbins Library in Arlington, Massachusetts.

Named a top ten finalist in the Cartier Women's Initiative, Vanessa believes that for-profits can change the world and make a difference in people's lives with the same passion for mission used by nonprofits — and in fact, should do so if they want to be truly successful. She is, herself, successful, on a mission to make life better for others and doing it all with authenticity and flair. Vanessa Ford wants women to feel like themselves again. She talks with Dr. Deb about being the healthiest, best version of yourself through the menopause journey and beyond. She is a co-founder of Menolabs after her own experience with menopause. She believes in providing well-researched tools to manage health while changing the narrative of menopause, allowing every woman to discover her inner goddess!
[First Name], This week on the WW Podcast I spoke with Vanessa Ford, cofounder of Menolabs. Vanessa's life mission revolves around menopause! Vanessa discovered menopause for herself at age 44. The word wasn't really in her vocabulary and certainly not on her radar but when she realized that menopause was the source of some challenging changes in body and emotions, she soon discovered that there was very little information available on the subject. She found that shocking! That every woman will experience menopause in their life yet it wasn't something that women talked about nor was it very understood. So, Vanessa turned that into a challenge -- to make menopause a conversation that could be had at the dinner table and all women understand it, or at least can easily find support and help when going through this transition. I don't know about you, but I didn't grow up talking about this kind of thing-- and by that I mean periods, pregnancy, menopause-- let alone perimenopause! Vanessa is the voice we all need in today's world. For starters, I learned that menopause is 12 whole months without a period. The ~average age of menopause is 51. Whereas the ~average age of perimenopause is around 45-46 years old, even as early as 35 years old. Vanessa reminds us: “It's something you need to be aware of in your mid-30s.”
In this episode of Straight Up Wellness, Kate talks with Vanessa Ford about how to be the healthiest, best version of yourself - through all stages of menopause and beyond.

**This episode is brought to you by MuteSix, Repeat, and CarText** “MenoLabs is a company founded to fundamentally change menopause in the United States,” tells Vanessa Ford, Co-Founder of MenoLabs, a brand that provides natural products to relieve menopause symptoms. Vanessa did doctoral research around cognitive studies and learned about human brains along with storytelling. She pivoted into marketing, nonprofits and then started MenoLabs in 2019 to change women's options for treating menopausal symptoms, which includes the not-so-small task of improving the education and research done on this subject and changing how society views menopause. Their consumers validate the brand's existence. Interestingly, MenoLabs has operated mainly as a flat organization where they work collaboratively and bring different expertise areas to solve challenges. They iterate, adapt, fail, learn, fail forward, keep on learning, adapting, and make decisions based on data in front of them. In part 1, Vanessa talks about: * Her gratitude towards her Co-Founder, Danielle Jacobs * Overview of the brand * Why menopause is a Taboo discussion * Effect of menopause from an entrepreneurial standpoint * Why no CEO * Can a collaborative management model work in other areas * Her life before MenoLabs * Danielle Jacobs' background Join Ramon Vela and MenoLabs as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand. **This episode is brought to you by MuteSix, Repeat, and CarText** “It's sad that we don't have support networks in place for women in midlife,” says Vanessa Ford, Co-Founder of MenoLabs. In the second half of this Feature, she talks about the challenges, stressfulness, and frustration they faced while formulating their products as well as operating during Covid. Vanessa also talks about their customers and mission. For instance, Menolabs has a 3% return rate and 97% happy consumers. While these numbers are significant from a business perspective, what drives her and the team is their mission. She gives us a review of two of their prominent probiotic products. She also laments the limited knowledge about menopause that's provided to doctors during medical school. Did you know there is something called "menopause rage" ? Today we have Vanessa Ford back on the show to do the second episode discussing the perimenopausal/menopausal transition. If you missed last week's episode make sure to go back and listen to that first, it's full of amazing information. Today, Vanessa shares with us that the average age of menopause is 51 so if you can have perimenopause for 7-13 years that means you can start having symptoms in your late 30s'. Menopause technically is when you don't have a period for 12 months consecutively, so if you start your period within that timeframe that means you start all over again before you can say you are in menopause. Vanessa who is cofounder of Menolabs, was prompted to action when, at 44 she had a period that lasted 3 weeks! Unsatisfied with the lack of support that women experience during this stage of life, and finding the stereotypes of women in mid-life exasperating and insulting, she created MenoLabs to address what she sees as a glaring need in every woman’s life. If you are curious what products Menolab has to offer check out the link below or in the shownotes and make sure to use my discount code to get 10% off! Vanessa knew she needed to do something about this topic because there is severe lack of research into perimenopause and menopause, despite the fact that it affects all women: • 25 million women in the United States are in the menopause transition right now. • 6,000 women enter this transition in the United States every single day. • Millennials, America’s largest generation, started turning 40 last year, the prime decade for menopause symptoms to begin. • Worldwide, there will be 1 million women in menopause in the next 5 years. So if you are finding yourself not sleeping, losing hair, gaining weight, having acne, dry skin or mood swings you could possibly be experiencing perimenopause symptoms and not even realize it. One topic that really stood out to me is how important it is to make sure your gut microbiome is healthy to help reduce perimenopausal/menopausal sypmtoms ! There is a severe lack of research into perimenopause and menopause. Luckily Vanessa Ford and her business partners Danielle Jacobs and Dr. John Konhilas at Menolabs saw the huge gap and need for us midlife women to get some answers and relief from hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and all the other symptoms we have during this period of our lives. In this episode we openly discuss what it's like to be in perimenopause and menopause and what we can do about it. Show notes: After thinking she had cancer and couldn't get any answers from her friends and family Vanessa Ford realized there is a lack of research into women's symptoms for perimenopause/menopause. Every woman's symptoms are different. Menopause rage is real. You can just be angry for no particular reason. You can logically give excuses away why you are being angry, having hot flashes and irregular periods. Dr. John Kohnhilas has been studying menopause for over 20 years. Scientist are talking about our second brain in our enteric nervous system. They developed three product supplements that will help women with menopause symptoms of hot flashes, mood swings and weight gain. MenoFit, MenoGlow and MenoGuard. What they discovered is that normally as we use estrogen we pass it out of our bodies but if we use the right probiotics, the right bacteria, your gut will send a signal to your brain to recyle your estrogen. It's called deconjugation of estrogen. The products are 100% natural. If diagnosed with or have had treatments with cancer and a doctor says you can't have soy or phytoestrogens you should not take these supplements. You should really discuss with your doctor before you take any supplements. It's extremely important to exercise now to safe off osteoporosis and have good bone health! ** Correction. The products are not completely GMO free.
Vanessa unpacks how stepping out of her comfort zone and overcoming fear has helped showed her how great God is and how amazing his plans are.
