Getting more people on bikes, and building better bike infrastructure to facilitate it, is something of a chicken-and-egg problem. People need to feel safe to get out in the first place; getting municipalities to take the issue seriously often takes a demonstrated need for better infrastructure.PeopleForBikes is doing a lot to advocate for bike riders of all stripes — from casual commuters to dedicated mountain bikers, urban delivery riders to weekend roadies, and everyone in between. So we sat down with their CEO, Jenn Dice, to hear all about what PeopleForBikes does, and why it's important; chat about what you can do to advocate for better bike infrastructure in your community; how the proliferation of eBikes has changed the landscape; and much more.RELATED LINKS:PeopleForBikesBLISTER+ MembershipThis Week's Gear GiveawayTOPICS & TIMES:PeopleForBikes & their mission (1:21)Infrastructure & policy to facilitate bike access (4:04)City Ratings (7:35)The Great Bike Infrastructure Map & community engagement (13:21)E-Bikes and their infrastructure needs (14:45)E-Bike classifications & regulations (17:59)MTBs & trail access (29:57)Managing shared use trails (31:04)The LA Olympics & car-free goals (36:12)Tariffs & the bike industry (41:58)Getting involved with PeopleForBikes (45:21)OUR OTHER PODCASTS:Blister CinematicCRAFTEDGEAR:30Blister PodcastOff The Couch Hosted on Acast. June saw the highest YOY increase in bike shop service/repair dollars since 2020, but that's paired with the lowest number of service orders in eight years. While service departments are bringing in increased revenue, there's a bit of caution mixed in as fewer bikes are likely being worked on. Chart in the email tells a clear story on long term trends. Dealers need to join PeopleForBikes and start getting these monthly market reports.August ecommerce results from WorkstandVery good August for some (+11% compared to -2% in July)Better than July for most (-9% compared to -17% in July)Site traffic up all year, August best at +13%Trend continues - Order volume down and average order upStore pickup May-August 32,000 orders (lot of store traffic)Be sure to email your questions to podcast@workstand.com. In this engaging episode, we dive into various topics from celebrating Pride Month to insights from the NBDA Retailer Summit. The conversation starts with a lively discussion about attending a drag show during Pride Month and the experience of embracing gender expression. The focus then shifts to the NBDA Retailer Summit, highlighting the successful collaboration between suppliers and retailers, with a key emphasis on financial competency and the importance of selling online.NBDA Retailer SummitGreat support from suppliers, almost half of the attendeesRetailers of all sizesLongtime supporters, plenty of fresh facesAbout half of the presentations were from retailersLearning from each otherThemes; understanding finances and selling online (all in D2C business)My presentation on how suppliers think about retailers in the digital spaceStanding room onlyGood questionsA couple of dealers want to sign up based on the informationMay platform resultsOrder volume across the Workstand platform was -14% for the month, the slowest performance of an already soft spring selling season.Online bike sales however drove up average order value, resulting in total platform sales being +2%.Sessions and pageviews continue their strong performance, indicating that consumers are shopping. Our traffic data aligns with Google search volume which has been reliably high this spring and steadily rose during May. A bright spot for the month is the typical retailer having their best month of the year, being only -2% for the month compared to -7% in April. Still lagging behind the top performers. Electric bikes onlineI mentioned online bike sales earlier. It's worth calling attention to electric bikes. Year-over-year online unit sales growth for e-bikes in April/May 2024 is strong at 60% relative to 2023. Electric bike buyers seem to be very comfortable buying their bikes online. We have total industry sales results from PeopleForBikes from Q1. While only about 2% of e-bikes sold by bike shops in Q1 2024 were sold online, the annual growth rate of 45% indicates it is outpacing total IBD electric bike sales - reinforcing that same point about consumers buying these bikes online. Lauren on the NBDA podcastLauren did a great job speaking to why the work of helping bike shops means so much to her and how that informs the work her department does.Be sure to email your questions to podcast@workstand.com. The band is back together! Ryan is back and will join us each month to share key takeaways from current inventory data,  talk about big-picture topics in our industry, and answer your questions.Higher total sales amounts (by the dollar) in 2023 but lower total unit salesThe most recent report from PeopleForBikes provided some summary information about 2023. Last year's market value was nearly $1 billion over pre-pandemic markets. A lot of people rightly point to the dollar growth coming from a higher average selling price, meaning dollar growth is outpacing units. 4% decrease compared to 2022 but a 7% increase over 2019 Electric bikes now make up 20% of total bike sales. What's happening now?Look at more recent data, we're paying careful attention to the December through February data. Important key metrics have turned the corner across the network. Total online sales are up about 11% and site traffic is up about 10%. Most of 2023 was down relative to the prior 12 months but that trajectory is changing. What are the areas of growth in our industry? What's doing well?A lot of the growth we're seeing is coming from bikes - largely electric, 29" mountain, and sport/performance road. Heavy discounts in those categories is achieving the intended result of increasing total dollar sales volume.Interestingly, discounts in sport/performance road are actually driving up the ASP for bikes in the category. But who's doing well? While the largest dealers continue to drive most of our sales volume, in February we saw the first significant uptick for the small and medium sized retailers. Crystal ball time - how is 2024 looking? Can we make any predictions? Sizing up the IBD channel right now suggests that 2024 is going to be a tough year. Google Search Data, ridership data, and the sales of consumables like chains and nutrition indicate that people are interested in and riding bikes. Retailers on the whole are running their businesses pragmatically and relying on just in time ordering to stay flexible. Okay, you've taken us through a number of ups and downs…how can retailers take action to make a positive impact on their sales? My one piece of advice to our customers is to stay very active with your marketing. Be sure to email your questions to podcast@workstand.com. In this conversation, we interview Jacob Roach, the founder of Quiet Cat, about e-bikes and their role in hunting and outdoor activities. We discuss the origins of Quiet Cat and the need for better access in outdoor areas. We also delve into the regulations and classifications of e-bikes, including the different classes and their limitations. Jacob explains the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) and how it can enhance the user experience with e-bikes. We also touch on the efficiency and effectiveness of e-bikes in hunting, the spreading of pressure on public lands, and the importance of responsible usage. In this conversation, Jacob Roach from Quiet Cat discusses the stealth and intrusiveness of e-bikes, the distance and range they can cover, maintenance and cleaning tips, the difference between hub drive and mid drive e-bikes, transporting game with e-bikes, regulations and resources for e-bikes, and why choose Quiet Cat e-bikes. Key takeaways from this episode: E-bikes provide better access to outdoor areas and can be more efficient and effective for hunting and outdoor activities. Regulations and classifications of e-bikes vary, and it's important to understand the different classes and their limitations. The Internet of Things (IoT) allows for communication between users and their e-bikes, providing features like GPS tracking and power management. E-bikes can help distribute pressure on public lands and provide a more equal opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts. Responsible usage and education are key to ensuring the positive impact of e-bikes on the environment and wildlife. E-bikes are less intrusive than walking and can allow hunters to get closer to wildlife without spooking them. The range of an e-bike depends on various factors such as terrain, weight, and battery capacity, but on average, it can cover about 2 miles per battery amp hour. Regular maintenance and cleaning of e-bikes are important to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Hub drive e-bikes are suitable for flat terrain, while mid drive e-bikes provide more torque and are better for mountainous terrain. Quiet Cat offers trailers and racks for transporting game with e-bikes, providing a convenient and efficient solution. PeopleForBikes.org is a reliable resource for e-bike regulations and legislation in different states. Quiet Cat e-bikes are known for their high quality, reliability, and excellent customer service. It'll certainly expand quickly over time but for the many stores with no or a poor POS system, get in touch with us now! Ryan has been out and about talking about our evolution as a company and our new POS features. You can see more of that in the NBDA podcast and the two-part PeopleForBikes, Inside the Outdoors podcast (Part 1 and Part 2) that Ryan was recently a guest on.Upcoming guest remindersAlex Slocum - ever wonder what it takes to build a software application like Workstand? The help center walks through using both automatic discounts and discount codes and both are very useful tools for promotions. Maybe they'll even talk about the time Gwensanity swept the Rio Olympics, or one of the many amazing sprint finishes in tri history (which mostly seem to involve Lionel Sanders these days)   Here's what a lack of sleep does to your cycling performance - and how to improve the quality of yours Improving your sleep could provide the single biggest boost to your cycling performance it's possible to make by legal means. Though it was arguably made famous as a “marginal gain” when Team Sky (now Ineos Grenadiers) started carting their own mattresses with them at the Tour de France, sleep may in fact be a maximal gain – it really is that fundamental in building fitness and maintaining health. So how can you make sure you're getting the optimum dose of the most potent legal performance enhancer known to cycling humanity? Nick Littlehales, a sleep coach who has worked with British Cycling to help elite riders understand what happens when we sleep and why it's specifically important for cyclists. “The simple fact is, we should be allocating over 30 per cent of every 24 hours to a defined recovery process,” says Littlehales. “Everything gets repaired when we sleep, which means consistent sleep deprivation diminishes every pillar of human performance, not only muscular and respiratory recovery.”   It's while we sleep that most testosterone and human growth hormone is released, more than in any other phase in each 24-hour cycle. Furthermore, the stress hormone cortisol decreases, cells and muscles are repaired, and our heart and cardiovascular system get the chance to rest. There is a lack of hard evidence around sleep and sports performance, but preliminary studies have suggested that sleep deprivation may also be linked with accelerated muscle atrophy when in a calorie deficit.   “You need to listen to your body,” Littlehales adds. “Cyclists want to be continually pushing their boundaries and sometimes hours of sleep are perceived as a waste of time. But you need a balance, and you need consistent and sustainable levels of recovery.”   What are Continuous Glucose Monitors? Explaining their use, the ban, and Faulkner's DSQ "The fans don't want to see Formula One in bike racing, they want surprises, they want unpredictability," Rogers told Cycling Weekly(opens in new tab). "We feel that putting such powerful information into the hands of younger riders is taking away a skill - deciding when you need to eat and learning about your body [...] It shouldn't be a completely automated process where every decision is being taken by technology."   What's New in the 303: Nationwide E-Bike Tax Credit Bill Returns to Congress Leading bike industry advocate PeopleForBikes is asking supporters of the legislation to sign an online petition.   The Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment Act first arrived in Congress in 2021. Like most bills that come to America's legislative chambers, it never passed into law. But five politicians and bike industry advocates hope that 2023 will be the year Americans get tax credits for buying electric bicycles, according to a statement from industry advocate PeopleForBikes.   For the bill's sponsors, getting more cars off the road is a clear win for reducing reliance on fossil fuels.   “Transitioning to a clean energy economy includes changing the way we get around. That means transit, rail, and electric buses, cars, and bikes. Our bill will make it more affordable for working people to buy an e-bike and help get cars off the road,” said Senator Brian Schatz, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development.   Other bill supporters include Representatives Jimmy Panetta (California), Earl Blumenauer (Oregon), Mike Thompson (California), and Adam Schiff (California).   E-bikes parked for a sharing program An office worker takes an e-bike from the bicycle sharing programs that have become common in many cities; (photo/Shutterstock) Bill: $1,500 Credit for E-Bike Purchase The E-BIKE Act hasn't really changed from its 2021 version, according to PeopleForBikes.   It proposes a refundable 30% tax credit for purchasing an electric bicycle — up to a $1,500 credit for new bicycles that cost less than $8,000. The credit would be allowed once per individual every three years or twice for a joint-return couple buying two electric bicycles.   There's one addition to the 2023 bill, however: income caps. These limits parallel the electric vehicle tax credit caps. That means no tax credit for those with an annual salary of $150,000 for single filers, $225,000 for heads of households, or $300,000 for those filing jointly. The bill also mandates a report from the IRS after two years to understand the distribution of the credit by income tax bracket and adjust for equity in the future, according to PeopleForBikes.   An electric bicycle tax credit was included in the House-approved Build Back Better Act in 2021. But legislators cut the provision when negotiations resulted in a new bill called the Inflation Reduction Act.   “The IRA is the largest climate policy package in American history, but to quickly and effectively take action on reducing emissions, Congress must consider the E-BIKE Act as an essential and complementary policy,” PeopleForBikes wrote.   Community Public Service Announcement Call to all local race directors TriDot's Value - Community Who Cares for Each Other; Be good Citizens TriDot Local Event Ambassadors are offering to be First Race Orientation Guides FROG to anyone self-reporting to be their first triathlon. PeopleForBikes Director of Enterprise Partnerships Ryan Birkicht thrives on messaging. It's fortunate, then, that his day job is to convince more companies to get people riding bikes and leaving the car behind. The message is a great one, as any cyclist can attest. But in today's Climate climate, it's also a vital message to save the future of our society, and our planet. No pressure, right? On this episode of the Slow Guy on the Fast Ride podcast, Birkicht walks us through the process of getting your workplace set up with an incentive program. He also gives us a sense of the benefits, not only for employees who take on the challenge, but also the workplaces that provide it.Ultimately, PeopleForBikes is aiming to create a healthier world with the incentive program. And it's clear there's power in numbers. The program serves the dual function of getting more people on bikes, and with increased numbers comes increased influence. That could help PeopleForBikes advocate for better infrastructure in the United States. To learn more about the PeopleForBikes ride benefit programs specifically, check out enterprise.ridespot.org. (Jan. 4, 2022) /ENDURANCESPORTSWIRE/ – PeopleForBikes, a national bicycling advocacy nonprofit and the U.S. bicycle industry's trade association, will have several staff members participating in panels and presentations at the upcoming CES trade show, taking place Jan. 5-8, 2022 in Winchester, Nevada.   CES — the most influential tech event in the world — has been the global stage for innovation for more than 50 years. Owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association, CES is the proving ground for breakthrough technologies and global innovators.   “We could not be more excited and proud to have members of our team speaking at such an important conference,” said Jenn Dice, president and CEO of PeopleForBikes. “We know that technology like electric bicycles have a massive potential to completely revolutionize the way Americans recreate and move about their everyday lives. Having the opportunity to share our work and knowledge with such a large audience will only grow PeopleForBikes' and the bike industry's role as thought leaders in this space.”   PeopleForBikes, Call2Recycle and industry leaders from Alta Cycling Group and Bosch eBike Systems will be sharing the latest information on the industry wide electric bicycle battery recycling program during a panel on Wednesday, Jan. 5 from 1:30 to 1:55 p.m. Anticipating a massive increase in electric bicycle use for both recreation and transportation, more than 40 bike industry leaders from 20 PeopleForBikes member companies worked together to design the nationwide program. It aims to address the environmental concerns with lithium ion battery recycling and ensure batteries at their end of life end up in the proper recycling stream and out of landfills, and represents the first transportation sector united under one battery recycling solution.   PeopleForBikes Director of Federal Affairs Noa Banayan will join Dave Snyder of CalBike for an update on the federal e-bike policies, like the E-BIKE Act and three-class definition. The E-BIKE Act would offer Americans a refundable tax credit of up to $1500 on the purchase of a qualifying new electric bicycle. Banayan will also provide larger updates on the role of e-bikes in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the status of the Build Back Better Act, which proposes nearly $12 billion for bikes, including the e-bike tax credit, a bicycle commuter benefit and climate and equity infrastructure grants.   “In 2021, policymakers at every level of government in the U.S. began to leverage the power of e-bikes to meet larger policy goals on climate change, economic growth, equity and mobility,” said Banayan. “In 2022, PeopleForBikes aims to promote meaningful and wide reaching incentives for e-bikes and bike riding in 2022, including the E-BIKE Act and the Bicycle Commuter Act before Congress.”   Ash Lovell, Ph.D., PeopleForBikes' electric bicycle policy and campaign director, will join a panel on Thursday, Jan. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. on the opportunity electric cargo bikes provide for urban delivery. The panel, which will include speakers from the University of Washington's Urban Freight Lab, Coaster Cycles and BrightDrop, will cover electric cargo bike's role in the future of last-mile delivery and micromobility and what regulatory and legislative considerations need to be accounted for to make their adoption a reality.   What's New in the 303:   El Tour De Tucson Rob Quinn Style_Apacheria Part 3 By Rob Quinn, Dirt Journal   Dateline 1736. Twenty miles south of the Mexican border. Rancher Bernardo de Urrea, a Mexican of Basque heritage knew all too well what a full moon meant. It meant a higher-than-average chance of raiding Apaches who routinely swept through the Rancheros in search of plunder but so far, de Urrera's little slice of paradise had been left alone. Named after a Basque term that roughly translates into sturdy oak, he named his Ranchero Arizona. And the rest as they say is history.   One threat that's accompanying the full moon for me, is the 38th annual El Tour de Tucson 102 mile bike race. I say race because the entire course is closed to traffic and your time is recorded and a winner named. Although it has the laid-back vibe of a Ride-the-Rockies type event, the clock is ticking and you see a higher degree of effort. I've done the event a dozen times starting when we lived in San Diego over 30 years ago. It's a great way to end the season and keep the training up. It's also a fun getaway for my non cyclist (a little Mountain biking) wife who is flying into PHX Sky Harbor airport (always liked that name, reminds me of a Dead or Panic song)  then driving down to Tucson aka “The Old Pueblo” the next day with me.   This is a multi-part series on Rob's journey to the Southwest to ride his mountain bike and road bike, Part one: HERE, Part two HERE   That leaves time for one more ride. I may be stupid but I'm not crazy. If you noticed I never mentioned my road bike in the previous two articles, it's because you'd have to be absolutely bat-shit nuts to ride a road bike in Phoenix. This comes from a guy that rode nearly every day for a decade in Southern California.   I had my eye on an open space park called Papago Park close to our place and ASU for some off-road miles. www.tempetourism.com Described as 1,500 acres filled with hiking and biking trails, picnic areas and lagoons. What it does not mention that until recently, it was home to one of the largest homeless camps in the state. That sort of defined the area enough that when we were looking for a place for Paris Hilton (my daughter) and a nice condo in our price range was open, right across from the great trails? We passed. The camp has since been disbanded, but not unlike the desert of Apacheria, that area can be filled with outlaws and boogiemen when the sun sets.   I take off from our condo in full trail kit. 34 pound trail rig, loaded Osprey and a baggie kit. You'd have thought I was dressed like an astronaut by the looks of my neighbors as a I muscled the rig down the recently repainted steps. It's about a 3 mile ride through Tempe and across the Tempe town lake to the park. Riding on the sidewalk with headphones off, all senses needed, I am almost hit three times. The Tempe town lake is interesting. About 20 years ago they dammed the end of the Salt River and the next week that area hosted the annual IRONMAN race. It's the only time you can swim in that lake.   You can SUP, crew, or Kayak but no touchy! Which I find one step down from torture if it's a balmy 115 out and you can't jump in the lake? We all have our definition of hell. No wonder the ASU Mascot is the Sun Devil.   Out of harms way I cruise into the park. It's 12 noon and around 90 degrees. The forecast calls for a 20 degree drop for El Tour. When I enter, I see a picnic table of middle aged males drinking and smoking weed. At the top of the hill, I see a Tempe PD SUV. Just like the Law shadowed the outlaws in the old days, some things never change.   TriDot Preseason Project The Preseason Project is a triathlon research initiative that helps us quantify and enhance the performance gains that TriDot's Optimized Training delivers over training alternatives.   You qualify for the FREE training if you meet the following criteria:   Planning an Olympic, Half, or Full triathlon for 2022 season Train using a device with GPS and/or power Have not used TriDot in the last 6 months Not a professional triathlete Enthusiastic and motivated to get a jump start on your season!   Qualified participants get 2 free months of optimized triathlon training. This week we are talking about planning your 2022 season. How to pick a race?  If you are doing IRONMAN, Challenge or any "big brand" races, you know how fast some of these races sell out.  Local races sell out fast too.  Should you commit early?  Once you've signed up, then what?  When does the training begin?  What kind of training plan is right for you?  All that and more. Bill, I thought I'd tee up this feature discussion by throwing out a few questions for you and I to discuss.  Here they are: What to consider when planning your season? Should you register now or wait? How much should I budget for my race season? When should I start training? How to get started with a training plan? What to consider when planning your season? Rich's thoughts For me I know that I like to avoid cold water, so warmer water is a factor How accessible is the race from a travel perspective?  Is the race serviced by bike transport if travel involved? Does the race venue sound exciting? Bill's thoughts Should you register now or wait? Rich's thoughts: Generally there are a number of arguments for committing early.  Lower race entry fees and greater availability of lodging if traveling. Tier-Based Pricing generally means you save if you register early.  General entries are sold on a tiered pricing model based on slot inventory. Once slot inventory is sold out at each level, the price will go up. Bill's thoughts: How much should I budget for my race season? Rich's thoughts: Before registering for your races, make a list of all the races your are interested in doing. Eliminate with schedule conflicts and then consider the all in costs.  Long distance races tend to require travel and logistics that don't accompany local races. Current United States IRONMAN prices, of which only Ironman Cozumel's website indicates which Tier they are at. Texas Limited St George Qualification/Sold Out Tulsa $774 Des Moines $699 Lake Placid Limited Alaska Sold Out Wisconsin $799 Maryland $799 Increase Sunday Chattanooga $799 California $834 Florida $774 Cozumel Tier 1 - $675.00 Local Races:  Breakaway Athletics sent an email that they will be announcing 2022 registrations soon.  BBSC has 5 tiered price points and we just past tier 1 (their lowest prices) last Sunday November 21st.    Without Limits has also announced their 2022 race schedule. They also have a date-based tiered-pricing.  The Colorado Triathlon: Sprint Triathlon Individual: $90 until 1/1, $95 until 4/1, $100 until 5/29 at midnight Olympic Triathlon Individual: $110 until 1/1, $120 until 4/1, $130 until 5/29 at midnight Bill your thoughts? When should I begin training?  Bill, if you were going to pick a couple of events or races for 2022, what might they be?  What time of year?  When would you start training and why? Rich: My answer depends on the when your earliest and A races are in 2022, what distance you are racing, your realistic goal performance and your current level of training/fitness. As a general rule of thumb, consistency in training produces the best results.  It's best to keep a consistent schedule of training even in the NA off season.  If you are working with a coach already, you are likely in coach-designed off season plan that will bridge you to your formal periodized plan in 2022 (Base, Build, Peak and Taper). If you are not working directly with a coach, you either self-coached or self-coached with a purchased training plan more than likely.  If you are a triathlete for example, it's good to keep a consistent mix of swim, bike, run and strength if you are a triathlete.    Where can I find a training plan: Bill, what was the first race where you followed a training plan?  Was it written by a coach or purchased online? Rich's If you are new to triathlon and don't have a coach, there are a lot of great resources out there.  www.mytimetotri.com - free plans BeginnerTriathlete.com - Triathlon Training for Beginners If you are doing a Sprint or Olympic distance race, As an athlete using TriDot, as a coach, as an ambassador of TriDot, and soon to be a TriDot coach, I highly recommend you try it for 14-day Test Drive.  Start your 14-day Free Trial! When you set up your profile, you'll also pick your "A" and "B" races in the RaceX part of the TriDot app and then TriDot uses your data and AI to design and actively adjust your plan better than a coach can and certainly better than a generic off the shelf plan.  It optimize your training for better results in less time with fewer injuries. https://tridot.com/.  If you decide to continue using it, you can sign up for as little as $9.99/mo, which is cheaper than other training apps without the training plan and cheaper than most plans out there.  If you want more bells and whistles for $29 and $99/mo.  If you feel like you could benefit from active coaching (teaching form and skills, accountability, encouragement, race planning) in addition to a training plan.  You can signup for a coached service with TriDot or please send me an email to Rich@303Colorado.com.  If you do take TriDot for a test drive, there's a question "Did a coach refer you?" Please tell them coach Rich Soares referred you. Here are some of the features I really like about TriDot and why: Detailed daily workouts with training zones that take into account elevation, humidity and temperature - Environment Normalization Performance benchmarking (TriDot scores. For each discipline, a normalized functional threshold power or pace (FTP) on a 1 to 100 scale with 1 being the slowest and 100 being at or near world-record pace.) Drill and exercise videos.  Swim, bike, run and strength workouts have warmups, drills and exercises and there's a video window in the training event to show a 20-30 second video illustrating the drill.  For example, a lot of the run warm up drills have Bobby McGee demonstrating how to do them properly. Device integration (Garmin, Polar, Strava) and smart trainer (Wahoo Kicker) Swim form analysis - combination of diagnostic questions, PhysiFactors (Intensity Duration Frequency Sequence Technique) and a CVT.  Categorizes you as a Tarzan, Overglider, Overkicker, etc and each has a list of characteristics. Swim drill optimization - offers specific drills to address the negative characteristics of your swim form categorization. (Nov. 19, 2021) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – After months of debate and negotiations, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to send the Build Back Better (BBB) Act to the Senate, approving with it billions of dollars in funding for an electric bicycle tax credit, a bike commuter benefit, climate and equity-enhancing infrastructure and more in the $1.75 trillion social spending bill. “The House's latest vote on the Build Back Better (BBB) Act embraces bicycles as part of a climate solution thanks to new financial incentives for bikes and e-bikes and grants for climate and equity focused infrastructure improvements,” said PeopleForBikes President and CEO Jenn Dice. “We urge the Senate to take up the BBB before the end of the year so we can get to work on lowering transportation emissions while keeping all people, no matter how they travel or where they live, moving.” PeopleForBikes applauds the House for advancing wide-reaching policies to curb transportation emissions and enhance mobility. The inclusion of the E-BIKE Act, a tax credit for electric bicycles, could mean money back in the pockets of Americans looking for a green, efficient and healthy transportation option. It will support delivery workers reliant on electric bicycles, parents seeking to leave the car at home for school drop offs and anyone who wants to harness the power of an electric bicycle to meet their daily local transportation needs. PeopleForBikes is especially grateful to House leadership for shepherding the BBB through the legislative process and champions for bikes and e-bikes in Congress, specifically Representatives Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) and Mike Thompson (CA-05) for their sponsorship of the E-BIKE Act. The BBB now heads to the Senate, where a path forward remains unclear. PeopleForBikes, the bicycle industry and our partners will continue to advocate for a spending bill that includes the E-BIKE Act, climate and equity infrastructure grants and more. PeopleForBikes works at the federal, state and local levels to advance the state of bicycle infrastructure, promote incentives for bicycles and expand access to electric bicycles. For questions related to this work, please contact PeopleForBikes Director of Federal Affairs Noa Banayan at noa@peopleforbikes.org. What's New in the 303: Ran into Jennifer Gutierrez swimming at Eastridge Rec Center in Highlands Ranch.  Gutierrez competed at the first Olympic triathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics and she was the first American to qualify as a triathlete for the 2000 Olympics. She took thirteenth place with a total time of 2:03:38.48. Upcoming Guests Marianne Martin (born November 1, 1957 in Fenton, Michigan) is an American road racing cyclist. She won the first Tour de France for women in 1984. The year she won the Tour de France Martin suffered from anemia earlier in that year and had been riding poorly. At the race Martin took the lead after stage 14 where the race encountered the mountains. Martin was a good climber and never gave up the lead after that into Paris. The streets were said to contain more two million spectators watching the race. Martin was inducted into the 2012 Boulder (Colorado) Sports Hall of Fame.  She's a talented professional photographer and her work can be seen on Real Life Portraits.  She is going to help us understand women's racing, pay disparity and what it would take to close the pay gap.  Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week.  Please be sure to follow us @303endurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment.  We'd really appreciate it! Notably, second-place finisher Reudi Wild, also broke the previous Ironman world's best time with a 7:36:35 and the women's winner, Sara Svensk, set an Ironman-brand world's best time of 8:22:41. About PeopleForBikes PeopleForBikes is making biking better for everyone by uniting millions of Americans, thousands of businesses and hundreds of communities to make every bike ride safer, more accessible and more fun. Electric bikes shorten commutes, flatten hills and make cycling accessible to anyone who might need a boost. They're also great tools for replacing car trips and fighting climate change. Unfortunately, they're still a little pricey for some people. That could change thanks to a new bill in Congress: the Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment Act. Co-sponsored by Congressman Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, the E-BIKE Act would offer a tax credit of 30% of the price of an electric bicycle, something that could bring the joys of e-bike ownership within  reach of more Americans. Congressman Blumenauer joins The War on Cars to discuss the bill, why commuter benefits ought to apply to bicycle sharing systems, and the economic, environmental and social benefits of bike commuting in general. (Spoiler alert: cyclists typically don't murder each other over parking.) Plus, he offers his thoughts on Democratic control of the House and Senate and the recent appointment of U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.  ***This episode was sponsored in part by our friends at Cleverhood. Interview Introduction: Matt Bach began his endurance journey starting with doing his first triathlon with his wife in 2010 starting a 5 year journey to qualify for Kona in 2015. In that five years, he learned a ton of lesson about nutrition and how to fuel for an iron-distance effort.   Shout Out to UCAN: I'd like to throw out a complimentary plug for Generation UCAN. As I mentioned with Matt, I discovered UCAN in the preparation for my last Ironman. I'm using UCAN now and really loving it. I mix a bottle of UCAN the night before my morning workouts and then drink the bottle on the way to the pool or when warming up on the trainer. After that, I have the hydration formula for the remainder of the workout that has no fuel but has sodium. Both products taste great and I'm really like the blender bottle. Let’s make cycling safer for everyone!! From   Endurance News: Nick Butter 30, has become the first person to complete a marathon in all 196 countries recognized by the United Nations, finishing his challenge in Greece on Sunday. Butter has so far raised over £65,000 ($83,000) for charity Prostate Cancer UK as a result of his record-breaking odyssey, which began on January 6, 2018. Butter, a former banker who hails from Dorset in the south of England, ran his first marathon at the age of 11. Later, he competed at a high level while keeping up an office job, but eventually decided to become a full-time runner. The idea for his 196-country challenge came when Butter met a man at a race in the Sahara desert who had been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. Kevin Webber imparted a powerful message that inspired Butter to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK and, when he realized that nobody had ever run a marathon in every country in the world, he set off to become the first person to do so. "You've got to value your time, you cannot just assume that you're going to get to retirement and live this life, you've got to go and do what you want now," Butter told CNN. “WIth an electric bike, it reduces the barriers of distance, of speed..electric bikes just give you a little boost and make the bike a more viable solution.” - Jenn Dice Bikes can be a great solution to your common car commuting woes. Whether it’s a traditional bike, or the up and coming e-bike, they certainly clean up the commute for many of us out there. Did you know about the PeopleForBikes community, who actually look out for your biking rights, and ensure you get to keep the rights that make it so fun? For us outdoor enthusiasts, we may not realize all the work that goes into getting our amazing gear. Jenn Dice joins us to discuss PeopleForBikes, a community of bikers housing over 1.3 million members. Jenn is the VP of PeopleForBikes, a company that unites millions of individuals and hundreds of communities making it easier to ride! Prior to that, she worked at the International Mountain Biking Association for 10 years doing government affairs. She’s been helping the outdoor industry for many many years, even being inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame as of September 2014! Bulletpoints PeopleForBikes works to make every bike ride better by getting more people riding, more often! Jenn started at PeopleForBikes four years ago! PeopleForBikes has around 1.3 million members at the moment. P4B is for everybody, enabling all types of riders, providing more access. Everyone is welcome. The biggest area P4B has been active in, in the state and local arena, is electric bikes. There are 770,000 jobs in the biking industry alone. An electric bike is just like a regular bike, with a boost. There are three different classes for the electric bikes. E-bikes appeal to an older crowd as well, who may have issues riding regular bikes. E-bikes are a great solution to commuting. There were plenty bad bike bills in the year 2016, including one that proposed a required license and registration! 99 times out of 100 PeopleForBikes kill bad bike bills. PeopleForBikes coalition has a “dues paying” team of around $200,000. Get involved in advocacy! What can you do locally for cycling? There’s a lot of overlap between tech and bikes. The Intrepid Entrepreneur
How to Win at Retail Today with Colorado Retail Icon, Ken Gart

The Intrepid Entrepreneur

Being a passion driven entrepreneur is one thing, but incorporating that passion into everything that you do is another, even more challenging endeavor. My guest this week is not only a highly successful Colorado entrepreneur, but he is also giving back to the state by investing energy in what he loves: outdoor sports. Ken Gart has run and started several successful sporting goods companies and other ventures, but most importantly he is currently the Bike Czar of Colorado. Ken and I are talking about the current state of the outdoor sports markets. There are a lot of shake-ups underway, but don't worry – it's not all bad! We're getting into what sets small business apart and how these differences can lead to success in ways that big companies can't match. We're also getting into the Colorado bike initiative, what's making Ken so motivated to throw his time and energy into this big project, and how he's trying to get others to emotionally buy in. Ken is so passionate about the field he's working in, and he's managed to turn all of this excitement into success, several times over. He's an inspiration for all of us passion driven entrepreneurs, whatever field it's in. Bravery in Business Quote “I think there's still opportunities in the retail world, but the applecart has been upset, and it ain't going to be fixed.” - Ken Gart (click to tweet) Cliff Notes: Ken Gart, is an entrepreneur. His investments range from specialty retailing to real estate development to large sporting goods companies. He is currently the Bike Czar of Colorado, as titled by the Governor. The outdoor sporting goods industry is going through a time of change. The major retailers are still big players, but they're not as flexible as smaller companies. Innovators can respond to the market faster and more efficiently than big business. Right now, big companies stuck with an old business model are the most vulnerable. The smaller companies can create more loyalty and find new opportunities in specialty communities. Smaller companies should focus on becoming the hub for the people they serve, online or in a physical community. Let your skills from other ventures and experiences help with your current work. Ken brought his business skills and ski rental experience to the table when he started helping with the bike sharing initiative in Denver. Let people know when you're really committed to a project. If you want people to go all in, make sure they know you are 100% committed to it also. When Ken saw that the governor was really committed to building bike infrastructure in Colorado, he was much more willing to put in more of his time and money to help out. Show people the value of your products, don't just tell them. In working on the bike infrastructure initiative, Ken has been doing bike trails with the governor and gotten some state officials out with them to ride. Get partners and clients to emotionally buy in. Get advice from someone in your field. Ken found a national company doing the same non-profit work that he is starting in Colorado, promoting bikes and biking infrastructure, and got them to give him advice and guidance.   “Everybody can bike. I think it's such a great way of sharing the outdoors and sharing the lifestyle and the health and wellness initiative through sport” - Ken Gart (click to tweet) Resources: GartCompanies.com https://goo.gl/4FsSn2 : State of Colorado's announcement to invest $100 million in bicycle infrastructure link: PeopleForBikes.org Show notes at: IntrepidEntrepreneur.net/ken-gart
