This was one of my favorite interviews ever. Ann was incredibly fun to hang out with. She was also in my top 5 marketers in my "interview bucket list."During this interview we got personal and talked about how Ann got started in writing, how she connects with her audience and what she does to slow down. I have an emotional connection with Ann's book 'Everybody Writes.' We talked about my mom, her struggle with cancer and how the words of a professor telling her that she couldn't write deeply affected her and they became the deciding factor on her dropping out of college. Ann shares how this professor was dead wrong, and that everyone CAN write and she covered some of the basics that you can work on to become a better writer. On this show we also cover what Ann is most passionate about in marketing, what marketing trends she would kill, what she would do if she had to start over from absolute scratch, and how slowing down and being strategic with your content is going to be key for business success. Jeff outlines that one of the biggest challenges in marketing a tech company is just understanding where you are best able to serve. Targeting and segmentation are crucial in your marketing efforts.“When problem solving for a client, do it with their end in mind instead of your own, If we aren’t a fit, we aren’t saving anybody any time or creating any value, its important to be honest with yourself and say Here’s where we fit and here’s where we don’t”.Be able to say NO to businesses because you may not be their best solution, but when you are, it won’t be overselling yourself and it will be a natural fit. This is a great episode and one of my favorite quotes from it was: “If you promise the world to your customer and don't deliver on it, that’s what they will remember.”

They share their story of how they shifted away from a content management agency into an AMB agency by creating their company ‘Personal ABM’. They share how they moved from “One-To-Many” marketing to a much more personalized form of marketing because while One-To-Many might drive awareness, it’s too impersonal to move hearts and minds.Kristina and Eric both work with supply chain & tech marketers to add a personal account layer that enables them to influence revenue with new business & account expansion.  By shifting profiles, content, and messaging for specific accounts and conversations related to account-specific gaps and impacts, they have helped their clients have reversed “no” positions. They have created a turnaround for accounts like P&G that were provided notice that their commitment with a distributor would most likely end and that the business would most likely go to a national competitor. They have also created $2M sales cycles for a client with accounts that were unresponsive for 5+ years. On this episode, they share personal account-based approaches that help to align sales, marketing, and customer experience teams and drive million-dollar wins for their clients.

Today we share Dennis Schiraldi’s Story. He is the founder of the annual DOYO LIVE marketing event and founder of ‘The Icon’s of Youngstown’ Publication. He shares how he got started in the business, what it takes to be an entrepreneur and how he decided to go all in on himself. Dennis has had a great career in both marketing and sales and we ask him how both have changed over the last decade. He says that one of the biggest changes in sales is the inflation of base salaries for sales teams. Part of the reason for this is sales cycles just take longer now and there is a much larger emphasis on the knowledge sharing & information requirements that a sales person needs to have about their product. We are also seeing a lot of churn in sales teams the expectation for closing sales is now so high (due to inflated salaries) and reaching your targets/quotas is almost unattainable in most companies. His solution: Don’t sell S@&! to people that they don’t need.He advises to never put your need for making a sale above what the customers need are. It’s a losing strategy.Dennis believe’s companies should consider incentivizing by teams, meaning both sales and marketing teams reap reward if goal thresholds are met. He also believes the negative perception of sales people has largely been a self-inflicted wound. Most sales people don’t put the customers needs first, they put their own need of having to make a sale first ahead of the customer. He shares how empathy, relationship-building, patience paired with some hustle and hard-work go a long way in building a successful sales career in 2019.

Be A Connector, Not A Collector

In today’s sales environment, your network is your net worth. If you are simply a collector, ask yourself what the value is in amassing a high volume of “connections” that have no relevance or meaning to your business. Sure, everyone wants to get to that coveted 500+ connections on LinkedIn, and that’s a good goal to have. But the number of connections is secondary to the quality of connections. A smart strategy would be to surround yourself with smart, interesting, influential people. The reason? The more influential people you’re connected with, the higher your social capital skyrockets. Gain likability and trust by figuring out who your customers like and trust already, and connect with them. Go for quality and not quantity. On today's show, Chris will share some proven methods and guidelines for increasing your social net worth.
