Want to go from full house to living light? Today, we have a case study that will help you get there. Kathi is interviewing author Barb Raveling, who has a history of over-stuffing her closets and hiding things under the bed. The result? Feeling overwhelmed and stressed by clutter. (Can you relate?) She tried to get organized, made piles and sorted donations, and - nothing changed. “What if I need this in the future?” she cried. In the meantime, her present self was distracted by all the stuff. (Perhaps you have felt this way too?) About a year ago, Barb and her husband made a huge change. They started traveling every 13 weeks to live in a new place for work, and all they could bring was what fit in the car. Along the way, Barb discovered the freedom of leaving her things behind, and she wants to share what she has learned with you. Here are Barb's top tips for downsizing and living with less: Bring as little as possible - after a short stay at home Barb packed even less for the next adventure. What you do bring, be sure to keep it neatly contained.  Think carefully before putting things in storage - is it really worth it? Letting go of things means letting go of stress. Would you like to join others on a decluttering journey and move toward more peace in your heart and home? Top 10 Emergency Management Skill Sets You Need to Succeed

EM Weekly's Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 21, 2023 55:08

This week, I will be discussing the skill sets that I believe are necessary to become a next-generation emergency manager. These skills range from being thrifty with money to learning how to map using drones, to effectively communicating with strangers and building lasting relationships. These are the skills that have not only helped me throughout my career but have also proven to be valuable during unexpected situations.Top 10 Emergency Management Skills10: Networking: If you can't make friends, or at least sustain relationships, you're probably not going to succeed in this field.9: Be an entrepreneur - You'll never have enough money to do what you need to do. Be passionate about the work and find ways to make it happen. Adapt, overcome, excel on the cheap.8: Expertise - You can't be bad at this job. There is no "good enough" when it comes to education, training, and experience. Have a broad range of expertise.7: Wellness Minded - Taking care of yourself is the only way you can take care of others. Advocate for time off, 8-hour shifts, stress management, mental health support, exercise, healthy eating, and sleep. Just say no to EOC drugs, caffeine, and nicotine.6: Critical Thinking - Shed your ego and bias. Don't commit to bad strategies and tactics because your ego is too invested. Pause, breathe, and assess the data. Avoid the sunk cost fallacy.5: Data visualization - Communicating complex data simply is an art and a necessarily skill. How you communicate data can make the difference in getting grants, managing incidents, and keeping everyone informed. 4: Get good at Tech - This is a technical job. Don't be a Luddite. Radios are more complicated. Software has more capabilities. Alert and warning systems are complex. GIS, drones, mapping, and cybersecurity are all important.3: Planning - Plan to plan. Plans can help you set goals, navigate the unknown, build foundations, and measure success.2: Be innovative and creative - On and off the job, you'll need to innovate. Disasters don't follow formulas. Taking time to do something creative on your own can help fire up the synapses you'll need in an emergency. Draw, paint, build, read, write, think. If your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. 1: Communication - It's 90% of the job. You need to be able to talk to a lot of people in different settings and through different mediums.Bonus: Be good at a lot of things. Mission creep is part of the job. Until enough help arrives, you may be doing everything. We’re just going to go out and say it…. “2021 Vision People!”With the start of every year, we typically look at New Years Resolutions but in today’s episode, we are sharing with you our top five goals for using Instagram for Business. At the start of 2020, we both set some big gaols and are thrilled with the progress and things we were able to create. We started this podcast and learned so many new things along the way but looking back we are so glad of the things we accomplished and learned. Even through a pandemic we saw many businesses and business owners pivot in 2020 (many of whom are part of our online membership community, The Social Storytellers which we also launched in 2020)!To start off the episode, we are sharing some of the goals we had set before the start of 2020 including using our vision boards, taking risks and recording our first episode (insert our cringing faces here!) Their song, What Happens has a strong, clear message of empowerment about what women are truly capable of achieving. This episode celebrates women’s courage and resolve in overcoming adversity. With the many challenges 2020 has presented I wanted to end this year focusing on how strong women are and just how much women are capable of. I want you to feel strong and empowered to face 2021 with a new resolve to keep striving for things which you want, need, and deserve. In this episode I speak with Daniel and Lauren Goans, a.k.a. the folk duo phenom Lowland Hum, whose music has drawn acclaim from NPR to Billboard to just about every other media outlet. Touring nationally since 2013, Lowland Hum has become known for combining intricate harmonies and arrangements with a deceptively simple sound. And although they call it “quiet music,” they’ve put together a powerful and prolific catalogue of songs that speaks for itself.Like many touring bands, the COVID-19 pandemic upended Lowland Hum’s life as a band on the road for 6+ months each year. In our conversation we talk about how they’ve maintained and even deepened a connection with their fans in the midst of quarantine as well as the ways that they’ve been to replace lost touring revenue while they’re stuck at home. This episode is a must listen for creatives who are looking for ideas and inspiration for maintaining and growing their careers, even as artists face unprecedented challenges.BONUS: Be sure to stick around for the entire episode for a taste of Lowland Hum’s signature sound!Links:Lowland Hum Official WebsiteLowland Hum on PatreonLowland Hum on FacebookLowland Hum on Instagram

Kelly is the owner of 48 Fields, a century-old farm estate set in the heart of Virginia wine country. The venue focuses on working with couples who want to give their guests a relaxed but thoughtful countryside wedding experience. Having previously been a wedding photographer for 10 years, Kelly has experienced a lot when it comes to weddings – from the highs of seeing a surprise return of a loved one from deployment to the lows of no-show vendors. She can pin a boutonniere in record time, is a master of logistics, and still tears up every time a bride walks down the aisle. Especially if it's to the classic Canon in D. Played by a string quartet. When she's not hosting weddings at 48 Fields, Kelly can be found visiting Northern Virginia wineries with her husband, Steve, and dog, Piper. You may remember back in Episode 4 a few weeks ago, we chatted with Natalie Seng of Designed Perfectly Events all about how planners see venues and what they look for on behalf of their clients. Today, I am excited to take that idea a little bit further and hear what photographers think about venues! Why does this matter to you? You may hear some ideas of simple things you can do to improve the appearance and presentation of your spaces. Most venue owners love to see images from photographers after the wedding day so that we can showcase all that we have to offer. Wouldn't it be great if those photographers can better use our venues and settings and make us look even more amazing in those photos? Today's guest, Marirosa Anderson from Photography by Marirosa, will share her thoughts on how to provide the best photography experience for the venue, photographer, and of course the couple! BONUS: Be sure to check out this episode's free download below! In this episode, you'll hear about: Meet Marirosa Anderson [3:13] Does where a couple gets married influence wedding photography? [9:29] Is there a favorite type of venue that works best for photography? [10:56] Are site visits really that important to see a new-to-you venue before a wedding day? [12:22] What do you look at venues for that clients might not pay attention to? [13:54] What makes a great photo location? [16:06] What are good and bad things that venues do that affect photography? [26:42] How certain elements of the ceremony determine aisle requirements [29:07] What makes a good getting ready space for brides and grooms? [32:56] Is it better to have multiple spaces or one big space for getting ready? [37:33] What are simple things venues can do to improve the photography experience? [43:04] What can a venue can add to their emergency kit? [44:52] Why does a photographer choose to share (or not share) photos with a venue? How to Shoot a Great Interview

Phil Cooke Podcast

Filming interviews or short videos well is a skill every producer or filmmaker should gain. Phil Cooke offers 10 keys to shooting a good interview which can become a powerful tool to market your ministry or nonprofit organization.   How good are you at interviewing people on camera? No matter how great the camera shot or well-lit your set is, if the interview is not skillfully conducted, your overall video will not be good, and you’ll miss out on gaining an emotional connection with your audience. Here are Phil’s keys on how to shoot a better interview:   Be lean and mean with equipment.Don’t intimidate your subject with an excess of equipment. Learn to shoot with as little equipment as possible so that your subject is comfortable enough to share their story with you.   If possible, do a pre-interview.Make sure the interviewee can express their story well before you shoot the video. Don’t just show up and expect them to be a pro.   Keep the subject occupied or out of the room during set up.Do everything you can to keep them from getting nervous.   Don’t cover the topic before the cameras roll. You don’t want your subject to be talked out before the interview starts. This is particularly important for a dramatic interview.   As the interviewer, sit as close to the camera as you can.Make sure the camera is capturing both of the subject’s eyes instead of just a profile shot.   Set the camera at eye level for the best shot.If it’s set too high, it will diminish the subject; if it’s set too low, it will make it look like they are looking down on the audience. Keep it eye-level for best engagement.   Roll the camera without the interviewee noticing. When the crew is ready, have your camera operator tap you and you can roll discretely before the subject has a chance to get distracted and nervous. Have a system with your team for this; it can lead to a great interview.   If a problem happens, don’t let crew – or just anyone - stop the shoot. No one should stop the interview except you as the producer, director or interviewer. Let the interviewee finish a thought before stopping. If something goes wrong, have someone signal you, so you can allow the subject to finish a thought or a story so you don’t interrupt them abruptly.   If there is a problem, don’t tell the interviewee you need to “redo.”Find another way to recapture what you need by asking additional questions and redirecting the interview.   Shoot in an interesting place.Find a location that is a visual expression of their story. Go to their environment – work, home, a public place – as long as it’s safe and quiet.   Bonus: Be ready for anything.Expect the unexpected. Have a margin for “imperfections” such as noise in the background in a noisy location – if it’s part of the real world that is helping tell the story. Think in terms of making it natural.   The perfect producer is the one who never lets the situation get in the way of telling a great story. Make sure you’re capturing the story at its absolute best with the interviewee sharing from the heart. – Phil Cooke   For more keys on shooting a better interview, visit Phil’s blog at https://www.philcooke.com/10-keys-to-shooting-a-great-video-interview/   Get a free eBook on Creativity!
